Objective: Various diseases are caused by different pathogenic microorganisms. Antibiotics are being used for treatment of these infectious diseases, yet unpredictable utilization of it leads towards antibacterial resistance. It is required to discover better approaches to battle against antibacterial resistance. Therefore, the study aimed to detect antibacterial sensitivity of ethanol extracts of Curcuma longa (turmeric), Cinnamomumzeylanicum (clove) and Syzygiumaromaticum (cinnamon) against Syaphylococcus aureus and E coli. Methods: Prior to sensitivity testing, ethanol oils were extracted by an electric blender and each of the bacteria strains were cultured onto blood agar plate. Antibacterial activity was tested by agar well diffusion method where three different concentrations (50 μl, 75 μl and 100 μl) of selected plants extract were used so far as to measure the inhibition zone. Inhibition zone of the ethanol extract of these plants were calculated where three were found to be sensitive against Syaphylococcus aureus and E coli. Results: Greater inhibition zone 14.5 mm, 18.25 mm, 21.5 mm at100 μl against Syaphylococcus aureus in case of cinnamon whereas the least inhibition zone was showed by turmeric and it was 9.00 mm, 11.00 mm, and 12.75 mm at 100 μl extract against E. coli. Conclusion: Overall, all the ethanol extracts were found to effective against these two bacteria but cinnamon can be used as more effective antibacterial agent in both human and veterinary field after the toxicological test.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli accounts for 70%–95% of urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTI is a serious health problem with respect to antibiotic resistance and biofilms formation being the prime cause for the antibiotic resistance. Biofilm can restrict the diffusion of substances and binding of antimicrobials. In this context, the present study is aimed to perform in vitro detection of biofilm formation among E. coli strains isolated from urine and to correlate their susceptibility pattern with biofilm formation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 E. coli strains isolated from patients suffering from UTI were included in the study. The identification of E. coli was performed by colony morphology, Gram staining, and standard biochemical tests. The detection of biofilm was carried out by Congo Red Agar (CRA) method, tube method (TM), and tissue culture plate (TCP) method. Antimicrobial sensitivity testing was performed by Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method on Muller–Hinton agar plate. RESULTS: Of the 100 E. coli strains, 49 (49%) and 51 (51%) were from catheterized and noncatheterized patients, respectively. Biofilm production was positive by CRA, TM, and TCP method were 49 (49%), 55 (55%), and 69 (69%), respectively. Biofilm producers showed maximum resistance to co-trimoxazole (73.9%), gentamicin (94.2%), and imipenem (11.6%) when compared to nonbiofilm producers. Significant association was seen between resistance to antibiotic and biofilm formation with a P = 0.01 (<0.05). CONCLUSION: A greater understanding of biofilm detection in E. coli will help in the development of newer and more effective treatment. The detection of biofilm formation and antibiotic susceptibility pattern helps in choosing the correct antibiotic therapy.

ABSTRAK Kunyit (Curcuma longa L.) merupakan salah satu jenis tanaman obat yang termasuk dalam keluarga Zingiberaceae. Senyawa aktif yang terkandung dalam rimpang kunyit (Curcuma longa L.) mampu bekerja sebagai antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri dari ekstrak etanol rimpang kunyit (Curcuma longa L.) terhadap Staphylococcus aureus dan Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Ekstraksi dilakukan dengan cara refluks menggunakan pelarut etanol 96%. Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan menggunakan metode difusi paper disk dengan masing-masing konsentrasi ekstrak 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% b/v. Kontrol positif yang digunakan adalah Ciprofloxacin sedangkan kontrol negatif yang digunakan adalah DMSO. Hasil skrining fitokimia ekstrak etanol rimpang kunyit mengandung alkaloid, flavonoid, fenol, tanin dan terpenoid. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ekstrak etanol rimpang kunyit dapat menghambat bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dan Pseudomonas aeruginosa pada konsentrasi 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% dan konsentrasi 40% merupakan konsentrasi yang memberikan diameter zona hambat terbesar terhadap kedua bakteri uji yaitu 8,63 mm dan 7,8 mm. Kata Kunci : aktivitas antibakteri, Curcuma longa L., Staphylococcus aureus,    ABSTRACT Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is one type of medicinal plant that belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. The active compounds contained in the Curcuma longa L. rhizome can work as antibacterial. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of Curcuma longa L. Antibacterial activity testing was carried out using the paper disk diffusion method with each extract concentration of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%. The positive control used was Ciprofloxacin while the negative control used was DMSO. The results of phytochemical screening of the ethanol extract of Curcuma longa L. rhizome contain alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins and terpenoids. Based on the results of the study, the ethanol extract of turmeric rhizome can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria at concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 40% concentrations which give the largest inhibition zone diameter of the two test bacteria which is 8.63 mm and 7.8 mm. The emergence of resistant bacteria strain has become a global health concern. It encourages the exploration of potential antibacterial agents, particularly from natural sources. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of root, stems, leaves, and flowers of Polygonum pulchrum Blume against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, through disc diffusion method using cup-plate method. Inhibition zone against S. aureus from roots, stems, leaves, and flowers ethanol extract were 3.5 mm, 2.5 mm, 2.25 mm, and 2.62 mm, respectively, while the inhibition zone against E. coli were 2.25 mm, 2.12 mm, 1.62 mm, and 1.75 mm, respectively. In conclusion, ethanol extract of root, stem, leaves, and flower of P. pulchrum Bl possessed weak antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli.Keywords: P. pulchrum Bl, antibacterial, E. coli, S. aureus, cup-plate technique

Racun ayam is one of the plants which has several activities in its fruits, one of which is an antibacterial. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of racun ayam leaves. The extraction was done by maceration method using ethanol as a solvent. Antibacterial activity assay was carried out on S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa bacteria by disk diffusion method at the concentrations of 80, 100, and 120 ppm. The results showed that the ethanol extract of B. javanica leaves had the greatest inhibition zone on E. coli with inhibition zone diameter values ​​at 80, 100, and 120 ppm were 11.7 mm, 14.5 mm and 19.67 mm respectively. Inhibition zones in S. aureus could only be seen at 100 and 120 ppm which had inhibition zone diameters at 1.17 mm and 2.17 mm respectively, whereas in P. aeruginosa they did not have any inhibitory zone values. The results of statistical analysis showed a significance of the inhibition zone diameter values ​​of E. coli bacteria starting at 80 ppm with a sig value of 0.034. Due to a sig value was <0.05, it was categorized as significantly different from the negative control. The bacteria of S. aureus which had ​​<0.05 for sig values only found on 100 ppm and 120 ppm. Bacteria P. aeruginosa which had sig value >0.05 was not significantly different at all concentrations

Abstract: The making of perfume from the combination Magnolia  alba (M. alba) flower oil, Cananga odorata (C. odorata) and Mimusops elengi L (M. elengi) fixed with Pogostemon cablin oil (P. cablin) have been done. Essential oil of M. alba and C. odorata was distilled by water distillation and extraction essential oil of M. elengi flower using n-hexane evaporated solvent method. Composition perfume through organoleptic test obtained with a ratio of 4% v/v, 4% v/v, and 2% v/v for each essential oil M. alba, C. odorata and M. elengi. Antibacterial activity of the perfume and each of the volatile oil was performed by the disc diffusion method. Antibacterial activity test showed that perfumes were able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria, but less active. Antibacterial activity of the perfume was more active against E. coli with an inhibitory zone of 8.3 mm and 39.81% inhibitory power  than S. aureus bacterial 7.3 mm inhibition zone with 37.55% inhibitory power. Perfumes after storage for  one, and two months had better antibacterial activity than before storage with an average inhibitory zone of 11-15 mm and inhibitory power of 50- 68,18%.   Keywords: Antibacterial, E. ABSTRACTDayak onions (Eleutherine americana Merr) has been used as a traditional plant which has  benefits  for  many  diseases,  one  of  them  is  antibacterial. This study aims to determine the growth inhibition of ethanol extract of Dayak onions leaves on the bacterium S. aureus, E. coli and  S. typhi using three concentrations of 20%, 40% and 60%. Extraction was done by maceration method using ethanol 96%. Antibacterial activity test was performing using the paper disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer diffusion). The results showed that ethanol extract of bawang dayak has the potential as an antibacterial and has antibacterial strength against S. aureus, E. coli and S. typhi. At concentrations of 20%, 40% and 60% forming inhibition zone diameters (16.23 mm, 19.18 mm, 21.25 mm) S. aureus, (10.7 mm, 13.98 mm, 15.87 mm) E. coli, and  (14.43 mm, 14.6 mm, 17.2 mm) S. typhi. At concentration of 20%, 40% and 60% included strong groups to inhibit E. coli and  S. typhi, while at concentration of 60%, it is included in a very strong group to inhibit the S. aureus bacteria. Keywords: Antibacterial activity, Bawang Dayak , Kirby-Bauer diffusion method   ABSTRAK Bawang Dayak (Eleutherine americana Merr) telah digunakan sebagai tanaman tradisional yang bermanfaat bagi banyak penyakit salah satunya sebagai antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ekstrak etanol bawang dayak terhadap bakteri S. aureus, E.coli dan S. typhi menggunakan tiga kosentrasi yaitu 20%, 40% dan 60%. Ekstraksi dilakukan dengan metode maserasi menggunakan etanol 96%. Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan dengan  menggunkan metode difusi dengan cakram kertas (difusi Kirby-Bauer). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol bawang dayak berpotensi sebagai antibakteri dan memiliki kekuatan antibakteri terhadap S. aureus, E. coli dan S. typhi. Pada konsentrasi 20%, 40% dan 60% membentuk diameter zona hambat (16.23 mm, 19.18 mm, 21.25 mm) pada S. aureus, (10.7 mm, 13.98 mm, 15,87 mm) pada E. coli, (14.43 mm, 14.6 mm, 17.2 mm) pada S. typhi. Pada konsentrasi 20%, 40% dan 60% termasuk golongan kuat untuk menghambat bakteri E. coli dan S. typhi, sedangkan pada konsentrasi 60% termasuk dalam golongan sangat kuat untuk menghambat bakteri S. aureus. Kata kunci: Aktivitas antibakteri, Bawang Dayak, metode difusi Kirby-Bauer

Streptococcus mutans is a microorganism that important in dental caries. Herbs are known to have antibacterial activity against oral bacteria. The rhizomes of Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria are two of the eight species of genus Curcuma that are most widely used as traditional herbal medicine in Indonesia. Both rhizomes have antibacterial activity against oral bacteria at a concentration of 12.5%. This study aimed to examine the inhibitory of Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes extracts against the growth of Streptococcus mutants. The study was in vitro study. Both rhizomes got from the Experimental Garden of Balittro Manoko Lembang, West Java, Indonesia. The maceration was employed to obtain the extracts with the final extracts of both rhizomes at a concentration of 12.5%. Antibacterial activity test was carried out by using the agar well diffusion method. The positive control group was 0.2% Chlorhexidine and distilled water as a negative control group. The data obtained were then analyzed using the One Way ANOVA Test and Post Hoc Test. Results showed that chlorhexidine 0.2% had the largest mean diameter of the inhibition zone. Curcuma longa rhizome extract had a larger mean diameter of inhibition zone compared to Curcuma zedoaria rhizome extract. However, the difference in the mean values of the two rhizomes extracts was not statistically significant. Distilled water didn't have antibacterial activity. It can be concluded that both Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes extracts at a concentration of 12.5% have antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans.

Medicinal plants offer a major and accessible source of health care to people living in developing countries. Increasing drug resistant microbial infections intensified the search for new, safer, and more efficacious agents against microbial infections. Acanthus sennii is one of the medicinal plants used traditionally for the treatment of different infectious diseases in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate antibacterial activity of A. sennii against pathogenic bacteria. Plant materials were extracted by maceration technique with chloroform, ethanol and water solvents. The antibacterial activities of the crude extracts of the plant were carried out by the agar well diffusion method. Broth dilution method was used to determine minimum inhibitory and streak plate bactericidal concentration of extracts. The results revealed that ethanol extracts of leaves revealed high antibacterial activity against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus with inhibition zone of 14±0.6 mm at 25 mg/ml and 17±0.7 mm at 50 mg/ml. Ethanol extracts of buds showed high antibacterial activity against standard strains of S. aureus with inhibition zone of 25.7±0.7 mm at 100 mg/ml, also against standard strains of E. coli with inhibition zone of 16 mm at 50 mg/ml and 23.7 mm at 100 mg/ml. The mean minimum inhibitory concentration of 5.2±1.8 and 2.6±0.5 mg/ml was recorded for ethanol extract of leaves against standard strains of E. coli and clinical isolates of S. aureus; the mean minimum bactericidal concentration of 4.2±1.0 mg/ml with ethanol extract of leaves against standard strains of S. aureus; and the mean minimum bactericidal concentration of 12.5 mg/ml against standard strains and clinical isolates of E. coli. The result showed that A. sennii could be a candidate in the search for new antibacterial agents against these bacteria and its use in ethnomedicinal treatment of infectious diseases used by local communities may be validated. Isolating bio-active components and determining toxicity are future agenda. Peacock flower (Caesalpinia pulcherrima L.) leaves contain essential oils which can be used as an ingredient in cosmetics, perfume, aromatherapy, medicine, and supplements. The study was conducted to obtain essential oils from peacock flower leaves and determine the antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Antibacterial activity test was carried out by the agar diffusion method, using paper discs. Measurements were made for the inhibition zone diameter (IZD) that appeared, while the essential oil component was analyzed using GC-MS. The results showed that the peacock flower leaves (C. pulcherrima) had a moderate to strong antibacterial effect at a concentration of 7.5%-20% against gram-positive bacteria (B. subtilis and S. aureus) and gram-negative bacteria (E. coli and P. aeruginosa). Gram-negative E. coli bacteria are relatively more sensitive to peacock flower leaf essential oil compared to other test bacteria. Peacock flower (C. pulcherrima) leaf essential oil is composed of 7 main components namely β-Cubebene 33.87%; Caryophyllene 23.00%; γ-Elemene 13.18%; α-Pinene 10.96%; Cadina-1(10),4-diene 10.20%; Copaene; 7.09%; β-Pinene 1.70%.

Aims: This study aims to investigate antioxidant and antibacterial activities of borage (seeds and leaves) extracts, and to prepare different topical microemulsion formulations using borage oil. Study Design: Borage seeds and leaves were collected from Hebron -Palestine, then the borage leaves and seeds were prepared for extraction and then extracted with Soxhlet using ethanol. The antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the extracts were studied, and then Ternary Phase Diagram was constructed using the borage extracts (from seeds and leaves). Methodology: The seeds were cultivated upon their ripening season in April of 2016 from the Halhul mountains in Hebron/Palestine. Soxhlet method was used to extract borage seeds and leaves oil by using ethanol 95%. A ternary phase diagram was constructed by determining appropriate nonionic surfactant to assess the ability for microemulsion formulation and durability of each system. Tween 80 was found to be more suitable to solubilize each of borage seeds and leaves extracts compared with Tween 20 due to its prominent hydrophobic properties. The antibacterial activity was evaluated for both borage seeds and leaves extracts using a well diffusion method against Staphyloococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, &Candida albicans. Results: Results showed that the seeds extract has inhibition zone (12 mm) against S. aureus (gram positive bacteria) higher than inhibition zone that leaves extracts exhibited (7.5mm), but no significant effects observed for both extracts against E. coli and C. albicans. In addition, antibacterial activity for microemulsions formulation was measured against S. aureus, E. coli, and C. albicans. Results showed that there is minor activity against S. aureus when compared to PenicillinG and the pure seed oil or leaves extract. In contrast no activity was reported against E. coli and C. albicans. The antioxidant activity was further indicated by the quiet good ability to reduce the FRAP reagent for both extracts with the indication of higher seeds extract activity. This variation is explained by the higher seeds extract content of polyphenol, tocopherol and vitamin C than leaves extract. Conclusion: Borage seeds and leaves were extracted, and the extracts were showed antimicrobial and antioxidant activity and showed that they can be used in microemulsion using ternary phase diagram.
