Objective: Pharmacognostical study along with the development of a quantitative HPTLC method for Crinum latifolium and evaluation of its traditional claims.Methods: Quantification of three marker compounds oleanolic acid, linoleic acid, and lupeol was done through HPTLC. In vitro antioxidant activity was determined by six different models, namely total phenolic and total flavonoid content, DPPH radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing power, antioxidant capacity and hydroxyl radical scavenging assay. In vitro antidiabetic activity was evaluated by α-amylase inhibition assay based on starch iodine and DNS method.Results: The content of oleanolic acid, linoleic acid, and lupeol were found to be higher in aerial parts like 0.015%, 0.048%, and 0.028% respectively, while in root extract 0.006%, 0.027% and 0.025% respectively on a dry weight basis. Free radical scavenging activity was done by DPPH assay, showing the IC50 value of 410±1.105 µg/ml in roots and 441.95±1.788 in aerial parts. In vitro antidiabetic potential of both the parts were assessed by starch iodine color assay and DNS method of alpha-amylase inhibition model. In 3,5 DNS assay, IC50 of extract from aerial parts was 282.21±2.151µg/ml whereas in root extract it was 193.33±2.45µg/ml. Iodine-starch assay of C. latifolium (aerial part) shown the IC50 value of 340.81±0.49 µg/ml and C. latifolium (root) of 74.64±1.28 µg/ml.Conclusion: The results indicate that the aerial parts of the plant possess more antidiabetic potential in comparison to the root. Thus, the aerial part can be used to get better results as a drug and roots can be used as an alternative.

Euphorbia hirtais a well-known ethnomedicinal plant with diverse biological activities. The aim of the present study is to investigate the antiradical activities of various solvent extracts of the aerial part ofE. hirtaas well as to determine the possible cytotoxicity of these extracts. The aerial part ofE. hirtawas extracted with different solvent systems in order to increase polarity. The solvents used were hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EA), ethanol (EtOH), and methanol (MeOH). The contents of total phenols and total flavonoids were analyzed by UV spectrophotometry, whereas the potential free radical-scavenging activities of the extracts were evaluated using the stable free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), theβ-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching system, and reducing power. The EtOH extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content (237.9±2.26 mg GAE/g), and DCM extract scored the highest total flavonoid content (121±0.15 mg CE/g). The MeOH extract showed a potent free radical-scavenging activity as evidenced by low EC50at 42.81 µg/mL. Interestingly, the EtOH extract demonstrated the highest reducing power activity with EC50value of 6.18 µg/mL. Inβ-carotene-linoleic acid assay, oxidation of linoleic acid was effectively inhibited by DCM extract with96.15±0.78%. All the extracts showed no cytotoxic activity against Vero cells.

Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb (AL) has received considerable attention as a herbal medicine for its applications in ethnopharmacology with heath benefits. This study aimed to investigate antioxidant activities and A549 growth inhibitory capacity from its root extract (RE) and aerial parts extract (AE). The 50% ethanol extracts were used for the tests. The total polyphenol content and the antioxidant effects comprising ABTS+ and DPPH free radical scavenging activities were evaluated. Phenolic compounds in the extracts were isolated using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Lactate dehydrogenase released in medium was also evaluated. Total phenolic and flavonoid content, and in vitro antioxidant potential of the RE were higher (p<0.01) than that of the AE. Two individual phenolic compounds consisting of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-coumaric acid were firstly identified in both by HPLC. The RE exhibited higher A549 inhibitory capacity compared to the AE and activated the apoptotic proteins of bcl-2, bax, bad, caspase-3 and caspase-9 in A549. In conclusion, the AL extracts were more effective in antioxidant and A549 cells inhibitory capacity.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant, antidiarrheal and analgesic activities of Vachellia farnesiana (L.) Wight & Arn. The methanol extract of V. farnesiana and its different fractionates were subjected to in-vitro assay for the determination of total phenolic content and antioxidative potential. The ethyl acetate soluble fraction (EASF) exhibited the highest free radical scavenging capacity (IC50 value of 21.49 ± 1.04 μg/ml) as compared to that exhibited by the standard butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) (IC50 value of 20.41 ± 0.05 μg/ml). Such prominent antioxidative potential was further reinforced by a phenolic content of 39.26 ± 0.85 mg of gallic acid equivalent per gram of extract. The plant extract, at the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight, reduced castor oil-induced diarrhea in mice model by a statistically significant (p < 0.05) margin of 47.62%, while the standard loperamide produced 66.67% reduction of diarrheal feces. The central and peripheral analgesic activities of the crude methanol extract of V. farnesiana (MEVF) was determined by tail flick- and acetic acidinduced writhing methods, respectively, in Swiss albino mice. In the tail flick method, oral administration of MEVF at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight exhibited 221.09 and 237.09% elongation of pain response time, respectively, after 90 minutes of administration whereas the standard morphine effectuated 518.34% elongation within the same time. Furthermore, the same doses of the extract illustrated 63.27 and 69.39% reductions, respectively, in the acetic acid-induced abdominal constrictions in mice. Compared to the standard acetylsalicylic acid with 75.51% inhibition, statistically significant (p < 0.05) peripheral analgesic activity was established. The results of the present investigations suggest that methanol extract of V. farnesiana possesses antioxidant, antidiarrheal and analgesic activities which eventually indicates the presence of biologically important phytoconstituents within the plant that needs further exploration. Aim. The present study aimed to isolate flavonoid fraction from the aerial parts ofCissus quadrangularisand to evaluate its antioxidant and anticancer potential usingin vitroassay system.Methods. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were calculated for the drug. Flavonoid fraction was isolated using column chromatography and analysed using HPLC.In vitro, antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract and isolated flavonoid fraction was investigated by nitric oxide, DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays. Breast cancer (MCF 7) cell line was used as thein vitrocancer model for MTT assay.Result. The amount of total phenolic content and total flavonoid content in the ethanol extract showed 28.6 mg/g dry weight expressed as gallic acid equivalents, and 15.8 mg/g was expressed as quercetin equivalents, respectively. The tested extract showed good dose-dependent free radical scavenging property in all the models with the IC50values of 98 μg/mL, 125 μg/mL, and 96 μg/mL for ethanol extract and 10 μg/mL, 12 μg/mL, and 10 μg/mL for flavonoid fraction, respectively. The flavonoid fraction possess potent anticancer property against breast cancer cells (MCF7) with IC50value of 40 μg/mL.Conclusions. It can be concluded that the aerial part ofCissus quadrangularishas potential antioxidant and anticancer activities.

Olax scandens Roxb. (family Olacaceae) available in throughout tropical India. The current study, aerial parts of different concentrates of Olax scandens was evaluated for its in-vitro antioxidant potential by FRAP assay taking ascorbic acid as the standard and estimation of total phenolic content and flavonoids content. The IC50 value was originated that methanolic concentrates of Olax scandens are more efficient in antioxidant activity by FRAP methods compared EA & PE concentrates. The methanolic concentrates of Olax scandens & ascorbate exhibited antioxidant potential possessing IC50 207µg/ml & 50µg/ml by Ferric reducing ability Power assay. The methanolic and EA concentrates of Olax scandens showed the total phenolic content (14.426 ± 0.032, 4.128 ± 0.025) respectively, and ৒lavonoids content (11.526 ± 0.054, 3.682 ± 0.042) respectively. Invitro antioxidant studies show methanolic concentrates of Olax scandens have better antioxidant activity as well as a higher content of total phenolic and flavonoids content. These results indicate that aerial parts of methanolic concentrates Olax scandens could serve as a natural antioxidant, which may be useful in preventing free radical-induced diseases.

Background: The Algerian medicinal plant Thymus pallidus Coss. is traditionally known to be used as an anti-infective, expectorant, healer of wounds and against inflammatory and gastrointestinal diseases. Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the antioxidants and the antibacterial activities of the aerial part extracts of this plant. Methods: Polyphenols extraction was performed with methanol 85%, followed by preliminary fractionation based on the polarity of the solvent. The extraction and fractionation process gave the crude extract (CrE), chloroform extract (ChE), ethyl acetate extract (EtAE) and aqueous extract (AqE). The antioxidant activity of extracts was evaluated using in vitro assays. While the antimicrobial activity was determined using disk diffusion method. Results: Quantitative analysis of polyphenol and flavonoids showed that EtAE includes the highest amount (P≤0.001) with 495.12±1.91 μg GAE/mg of extract and 97.25±2.84 μg QE/mg of extract, for both polyphenols and flavonoids respectively. The results of the antioxidant activity of extracts showed that the EtAE exhibited the highest inhibition activity on XO (IC50 =51.6±0.2 μg/ml) compared to other extracts (P≤0.001). Moreover, the EtAE was the most effective fraction in free radical scavenging assay against ABTS radical and hydrogen peroxide (EC50= 3.21±0.03 μg/ml and EC50 =12.12±0.05 μg/ml, respectively) compared to other extracts (P≤0.01). Using β-carotene/ linoleic acid bleaching assay, the AqE and ChE recorded a considerable inhibition effect on linoleic acid oxidation with a ratio of 81.81% and 80.86%, respectively. In the antimicrobial activity evaluation, the extracts exhibited moderate antibacterial activity against bacterial strain, with inhibition zone ranging from 07 to 14 mm. In addition, the EtAE showed a good action spectrum against six bacterial strains. In conclusion, the EtAE of Thymus pallidus showed good antioxidant activity and antibacterial effect. Conclusion: The obtained results revealed the presence of a strong correlation between the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the extract and its total phenolic content. Furthermore, they reported that the EtAE has a considerable antioxidant capacity. This can be considered as an alternative natural source of antioxidants used generally as additives in food and pharmaceutical preparation.

Ethanolic extract of the root of Typha angustata was evaluated for antioxidant, analgesic and cytotoxic activities. T. angustata extract exhibited DPPH free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 124.96 ± 0.93 ?g/ml. The total phenolic and tannin content were found to be 596.73 ± 1 mg GAE/100 g and 319.68 ± 64 mg GAE/100 g of dried plant material, respectively. Analgesic activity was determined using acetic acid induced writhing inhibition in mice model. The root extract, at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight, showed inhibition of writhing reflex by 33.55% (p < 0.01) and 56.78% (p<0.001), respectively. Cytotoxicity of the extract was measured by brine shrimp lethality bioassay where the LC50 against brine shrimp nauplii was found to be 41.54?g/ml.Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. The chemical composition of the essential oils, antioxidant activity (DPPH and β-carotene/linoleic acid assays) and total phenolic content (Foline-Ciocalteu) of the flowers and leaves of Salvia reuterana were determined. Essential oils extracted from the flowers and leaves by hydrodistillation were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Forty-four constituents, representing 99.7-99.9% of the oils, were identified. The major components were germacrene D, benzoic acid hexyl ester, bicyclogermacrene, β-gurjunene and ishwarene, constituting 33.7-31.9% of the oils. The highest radical-scavenging activity (DPPH test) was shown by the methanol extract of the flowers (IC50=77.6 μg/mL). In the β-carotene/linoleic acid assay, the methanol extract of the leaves showed the highest inhibition (40.3%) which was only slightly lower than that shown by BHT (82.9%). The total phenolic contents of the methanol extracts of the flowers and leaves as gallic acid equivalents were 81.4 and 88.3 μg/mg, respectively. The plant also showed good antimicrobial activity against three strains of tested microorganisms.

Abstract. Dhakal L, Aryal B, Joshi GP, Pant DR. 2020. Nutritional potential of selected species of Arisaema Mart. from Nepal. Biodiversitas 21: 5703-5709. Species of Arisaema Mart. are believed to be poisonous, but few species are used as food in different communities. Therefore, an assessment of nutritional properties of six selected taxa of Arisaema including three edible taxa was made in order to find out their nutritional potential. Methanolic or aqueous extracts of samples (rhizomes and aerial parts) were analyzed for various nutritional and anti-nutritional parameters. On nutritional basis, the total starch content and total reducing sugar were found highest (25.71±0.04mg/g powder) and (46.73±0.06 mg/g extract), respectively in aerial parts of A. echinatum. Total protein and phosphorus content was highest in rhizome of A. tortuosum var. curvatum. Similarly, extracts of aerial parts of A. tortuosum var. curvatum also possessed highest amount of total phenolic content (52.67±0.24mg GAE/g), total flavonoid content (14.13 ± 0.03 mg QE/g), and also demonstrated best antioxidant activity (IC50, 108.59±0.54 µg/mL) in terms of DPPH radical scavenging activity among the selected taxa. Inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase in vitro was found to be highest (78.82 %) in rhizome extracts of A. echinatum and extracts of aerial parts of A. concinnum (34.82 %), respectively.

In the present research work, in vitro, the antioxidant activity of methanolic extracts of bark of Prunus cornuta and root of Rumex obtusifolius, respectively, was assessed by DPPH free radical scavenging method. Total phenolic content (TPC) of methanolic extracts was also determined by spectrophotometric method using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and calculated in ?g/mL gallic acid equivalent (GAE). DPPH scavenging activity results show that the root extract of Rumex obtusifolius (IC50 = 17.15) and bark extract of Prunus cornuta (IC50 = 27.32) shows good antioxidant potential. TPC of root extract was found to be 178.56 ?g/g GAE, and bark extract was 137.23 ?g/g GAE. Antioxidant effect (%) determined by using phosphomolybdate assay and superoxide anion radical scavenging percentage further supports the potential antioxidant activity.
