This is a descriptive qualitative study which aims at studying the use of the word sudah in the spoken use of Bahasa Indonesia in Sumba. According to Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, sudah is an adverb used mostly to inform that something has already happened or that something has already been done. The position of sudah in phrases or sentences precedes the verb or adjective that it modifies. However, there is a different use of sudah in Sumba, and probably in mostly eastern islands in Indonesia, where this adverb is placed after the verb. The purpose of this research is to study the meaning brought by this new arrangement of sudah. The data was spoken use of Bahasa Indonesia collected through note-taking at campus, houses, and public places (market and stores). The data collected was then analyzed using agih method or meaning-analysis method. There were also 2 informants asked to get information on the function of the new arrangement. The analysis showed that the adverb sudah underwent the semantic or meaning broadening in its use. This study revealed there were 3 new meanings as the result of broadening process, (1) to give order or to ask other people to do something, (2) to invite other people to do something, and (3) to inform that something is about to happen or to be done soon. With these new meanings, the adverb sudah can also function as an adverb to show that something has not happened yet or something has not been done yet, the contrast of what is suggested in the dictionary.

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh penelitian mengenai penggunaan jargon dalam komunitas sepeda. Tujuannya adalah mendeskripsikan penggunaan jargon dalam hal bentuk, makna, dan fungsi yang digunakan oleh komunitas Sepeda Solo Raya. Penelitian ini berjenis deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data berupa percakapan dalam grup Facebook dan WhatsApp komunitas Sepeda Solo Raya. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dengan teknik dokumentasi dan teknik catat. Penganalisisan data menggunakan metode padan dan agih. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah ditemukan bentuk penggunaan jargon yang didasarkan pada proses pembentukan istilah beserta asal istilahnya, yakni bentuk tunggal, afiksasi, reduplikasi, pemajemukan, abreviasi, dan frasa, yang berasal dari bahasa Indonesia, bahasa Inggris, dan bahasa Jawa. Makna jargon dapat dikategorikan menjadi tiga jenis, yakni makna denotatif, konotatif, dan istilah. Berdasarkan fungsinya, jargon memiliki 13 fungsi, yakni memberikan perintah, menyampaikan imbauan, memberikan perhatian atau menyanjung, menyampaikan permintaan, memberikan persetujuan, menyampaikan penolakan, menyampaikan larangan, memberikan informasi, menyampaikan fakta, membuat pernyataan, menyampaikan pemberitahuan, menyingkap perasaan, dan memberikan pertanyaan. This research is motivated by research on the use of jargon in the bicycle community. The aim is to describe the use of jargon in terms of form, meaning, and function used by the Solo Raya bicycle community. This article was a descriptive qualitative study. The data sources are conversations in the Facebook and WhatsApp groups of the Solo Raya Bike community. The data in this study were obtained by documentation and note-taking techniques. Analysis of the data using the matching and agih method. The results of this study are found forms of jargon usage based on the process of forming the term and the origin of the term, namely singular form, affixation, reduplication, compounding, abbreviation, and phrases, which come from Indonesian, English, and Javanese. The meaning of jargon can be categorized into three types, namely denotative, connotative, and term meanings. Based on its function, jargon has 13 functions, namely giving orders, conveying appeals, paying attention/flattering, asking for requests, giving approval, conveying rejections, conveying prohibitions, providing information, conveying facts, making statements, conveying notifications, expressing feelings, and asking questions.

Personal deixis of Indonesian language especially in Ambonese dialect are widely use in everyday conversation. This study aimed to describe the forms of personal deixes in Indonesian Leanguage with Ambon Dialect. The research was conducted as a descriptive qualitative study. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study of objective language phenomena. The data research were oral data obtained from communicative interaction in the Ambon society in the city and its surroundings. The data were collected from people of various ages who used Indonesian language with Ambon dialect. The data were collected using the method of observation with recording and note-taking techniques. The classified data were analysed using the descriptive qualitative method. The results show that the deixes in Indonesian leanguage with Ambon dialect consist of the first singular and plural personal pronoun, second singular and plural pronoun, third singular and plural personal pronoun, and personal pronouns of kinsip lexeme. Deiksis persona bahasa Indonesia dialek ambon banyak digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan bentuk-bentuk deiksis persona bahasa Indonesia dialek Ambon. Jenis penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif yang mengkaji fenomena kebahasaan yang secara objektif. Data dalam penelitian berupa data lisan yang bersumber dari tindak komunikasi masyarakat kota Ambon dan sekitarnya yang terdiri atas semua rentan usia, yang menggunakan bahasa Indonesia dialek Ambon. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan metode observasi melalui teknik rekam dan catat. Data yang telah diklasifikasi dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa deiksis bahasa Indonesia dialek ambon terdiri atas pronomina persona pertama tunggal dan jamak, pronomina persona kedua tunggal dan jamak, pronomina persona ketiga tunggal dan jamak, dan pronomina persona leksem kekerabatan.

This study aims to describe symbolic form of sign used to describe the emotions of Pasutri Gaje comic characters. Theoretically, this study discusses tropes symbols as additional elements whose existence has a major influence on conveying the emotions of the characters to the readers. This is a descriptive qualitative study. Apply the theory of semiotics proposed by Ferdinand de Saussure about dichotomy signifie dan significant and Pierce about triadic feature of sign.  Datas sourced from picture of online comic Pasutri Gaje season 1 until episode 13 season 3. Datas is collected by observing method with recording and note-taking technique. Data were analysed by extralingual equivalent methods and comparative relational techniques. Data presented used formal and informal method.             There seven kind of emotions symbol called tropes symbol used in comic. There were cross popin for angry sign, sweat drops to clumsy sign, drool to show feeling tempted, chibi to show childish side, dog ear/tail to express innocence in expecting something, blush to express feeling embarrassed, and shadow over face to show extreme anger. Tropes symbols fulfills the element of signification in accordance with the concept proposed by Pierce hence it can convey the emotional situation of character to the readers.

This research is purposed to determine the pattern of phoneme which changed in Indonesian loanwords which derived from Japanese. This research based on descriptive qualitative analysis method. The data source of this research is article from Kompas news online website which uploaded from January until October 2020. There are 67 data which classified to the pattern of phoneme that changed based on theory of vowels and consonant from Marsono and for Japanese vowels and consonant using theory from Sudjianto and Dahidi. There are 3 patterns of phoneme that changed in Indonesian loanwords which derived from Japanese found from this research: the pattern from one vowel change, the pattern from one vowel and one consonant change, and the pattern from one consonant change. The further research through big data such as corpus based research might be needed to find another variations of this pattern.

This study aims to analyze the images found in the novel Maleficent by Elizabeth Rudnick in 2014. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The method of data collection is by observation (reading) and note taking (underlining). The result of the analysis is to find out the nine archetypal images. The images are water (river), sun, colors (red, green, blue, black, white), serpent, number (three), good mothers, wise old man, garden, and tree. The images are able to enlighten the fantasy moment created by the writer and bring the readers’ experiences to the literary work of fantacy.   Keywords: Archetypal Image, Maleficent, Novel

The title of this study is “Types and Meanings of Compound Words Found in Medical Textbook Entitled Gray’s Basic Anatomy”. This study aims to identify the types and analyze the meanings of compound words found in a medical textbook entitled “Gray’s Basic Anatomy”. The data of this study were collected by using documentation method with note taking technique. This descriptive qualitative study used two theories to analyze the data. The types of compound words were identified by using the theory of compounding proposed by Plag (2003). Meanwhile, the types of meaning of the compound words were analyzed based on the theory of meaning proposed by Ulmmann (1972). After analyzing the data, three types of compound words were found in the medical textbook entitled “Gray’s Basic Anatomy”, they are nominal, adjectival, and neoclassical compounds. Nominal compounds found totaled 37 while adjectival compounds found totaled 42 and neoclassical compound found totaled 135 out of 214. However, verbal compounds were not found in this medical textbook. Based on the analysis of meaning, two types of meaning were found in this medical textbook, they are transparent and opaque meaning. The compounds which have transparent meaning totaled 197 while the compounds which have opaque meaning only totaled 17.

The purpose of this research to describe the types of ilocutionary act that the Indonesian language teacher use in giving fable story lesson towards students class VII SMP Negeri 11 Kota Jambi Academic Year 2017/2018. This research is descriptive qualitative. The technique of collecting data is observation, recording, and note-taking. The data then is analyzed by using pragmatic analysis. Based on the result of the analysis, it can be found that there 4 types of ilocutionary act that is used by the Indonesian language teacher, they are (1) directive, (2) declarative, (3) insertive, (4) expressive. The functions of teacher’s ilocutionary act is really important to the students in learning process. In addition, it is recommended to the teacher to improve their expressive utterance in order to increase studeents willinngness in learning and to reduce the use of directive utterance so that the students will not bored in studying the lesson.Key Word: ilocutionary, pragmatic

Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s play that used unique and dramatic choice of words in its adjective and noun. Grammatical transformation of adjectival adjunct in noun phrase in the translation text of drama Macbeth has caused the shift of phrase’s meaning. This study aims to identify the grammatical shift by using X-Bar theory. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The data are collected by using documentation and note taking technique. There are 35 noun phrases collected. The results show that there are 3 types of shift of adjectival adjunct. First, the adjunct is omitted. Second, the adjunct shifts into complementizer phrase. Third, the adjunct shifts into prepositional phrase.

This study is a descriptive qualitative study which concern with literary translation in a short story. It aimed at identifying figures of speech and also describing the strategies applied in translating figure of speech. The data was collected by library research method and note taking technique. The finding showed that the figure of speech found were mostly simile and one hyperbole. The strategies applied were retention of the similar vehicle, and retention of the same vehicle plus explication of similarity feature (s).

  Abstract This study is aimed at mapping the meaning of action verb provide and its translation in Indonesian lexicons. The data sources of this study are two Colours Magazines of Garuda Indonesia, May 2017 and March 2018 editions. In colleting the data, this study applied the observation method and note taking technique. Those data were analyzed using Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach proposed by Anna Wierzbicka (1996). Furthermore, the method of analyzing data was descriptive qualitative method. First, each of the data was analyzed to find its meaning configuration. Then, it was followed by the paraphrasing using semantic primitives to show the explication of each lexicon and be able to compare them. The results of this study shows that the action verb provide is translated into five different Indonesian lexicons in the Colours Magazine. The verb and its translations have slight differences shown by the meaning configurations as well as explications. However, they could properly deliver the intended meaning for the Indonesian target readers regarding the sentences they are in.
