The disengagement theory of adaptation in the aging process developed by Cumming and Henry (1961) is challenged. It is suggested that the withdrawal phenomenon exhibited by the elderly simply reflects reduced environmental opportunities for social interaction. Despite a reduced social sphere and the prevailing negative attitudes of old age, the vast majority of the elderly make a satisfactory adjustment to their later years and are happy. Interpersonal intimacy is viewed as the key to satisfactory adjustment. A longitudinal developmental approach to the development of intimacy in the elderly is presented.

In the population of Poland, as well as in other European countries, an aging process is taking place. It is expected that in Poland in 2050, up to 35% of the population may be seniors. With increasing age, there are numerous changes in the body that necessitate the modification of the current diet. Incorrect diet is a risk factor for many old age diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, stroke, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. The aim of this study is to review the nutrition recommendations in selected diseases of the elderly. The diet of seniors should provide the right amount of nutrients and be adapted to existing diseases. A proper diet can reduce the risk of complications from senile diseases.

Terceira Idade. ABSTRACT The present study aims to analyze the Brazilian public  policies made for the elderly citizen population and to examine their resonance in the production of senses and images on the process of aging. For this, we draw cartographies that could find producing figures of sense about the aging, passing through some politics formulated for to this age group, since the decade of 1920 until the creation of the “Estatuto do Idoso”,  in 2003. We checked that the appearance of public policies for the old age happened as an answer to the challenge of managing and controlling the aging process courses  in front of the increase of the elderly citizen population. The “Estatuto do Idoso”  is an important landmark of the management advance of the State upon the oldness and of the substitution of an philanthropic-assistance model for a preventive model which is based on the promotion of a healthy and productive longevity. With that, next to the figure of the sick and inactive elderly , it begins to appear figurations of a healthy and powerful aging, crossed by images of vitality and rejuvenation. KEYWORDS: Old age. The aim of the study was to understand how residents of a condominium Aging realize the quality and conditions of life in this new housing modality. This is an exploratory qualitative study of 20 elderly residents of the condominium Maringá . Data were collected in February 2012 in the household were semistructured and subjected to content analysis interviews. The results indicate the factors valued by the elderly in their perception of quality of life such as independence, autonomy, having an occupation, developing leisure and acceptance of the aging process activities. Also valued the structure and characteristics of this housing method due to the possibility of social interaction. We conclude that the identification of these aspects allows the planning of strategies for integrated care for the elderly and it is suggested that nurses recognize and value the aspects highlighted in the planning of care with elderly people in general.

Agism was the term chosen by Butler to name the process of discrimination based on chronological age, which usually results in an image of the elderly as unproductive, sick, depressed and with cognitive impairment. This form of bias, like others that devaluate and stereotype groups of people, has a marked effect on social interaction, influencing social attitudes and perceptions in a covert manner. The use of negative images relating to old age and the aging process promotes negative attitudes relating to elderly people, affects the way they live and the way people of other ages prepare to face their old age.

In the light of contemporary socio-demographic changes and humanistic ide-as, the issues of aging and old age gain noteworthy signifi cance. Everyone, especially the elderly, should be treated subjectively due to the consequences of the aging process. Taking into account the sense of quality of life of an el-derly person becomes a priority task and challenge for social environments in which the senior lives. This problem seems to be interesting, especially from the pedagogical point of view in the context of improvement, development, self-creation and accomplishment. Research on the quality of life of seniors is widely popular among Polish and foreign authors. It results from the thor-oughly represented science by researchers and their cognitive interests. The results od those studies should be updated and disseminated to increase the meaning and quality of human life. The article is a review of selected pedagog-ical concepts regarding the sense of quality of life among elderly people and conducted research on the topic.

The main aim of this study is to consider and present pedagogy students’ attitudes towards the elderly. The results presented herein were collected in a pilot project. The survey was conducted among 66 pedagogy students; a questionnaire and the semantic differential method were used as the research tools. The results revealed positive attitudes among the students towards the elderly. However, a conclusion was drawn that pedagogy students should be allowed to take part in activities involving the elderly. Students’s awareness of their own attitudes might allow them to understand elderly people’s behavior. A proper understanding of the aging process and old age can create a chance for better communication and inter-generational cooperation. It is also an inspiration for understanding their own aging process.

After reaching old age, the elderly most often withdraw from social life. This is a serious problem because by isolating themselves from society they become less active. This has an impact on the emergence of many diseases related to both old age and the impact of physical inactivity on the body. The aim of the study was to present the consequences of the aging process in various aspects of the body’s functioning and the role of physical activity in eliminating these consequences. Unfortunately, there are still too few activities focused on physical activity for people over 65. This should change, because physical activity has a very positive effect on the human body and its well-being. Additionally, it can be observed that the earlier physical activity is started, the less changes in the body associated with the progressive aging process will occur. Such a person will be more agile and will not have major problems in dealing with overcoming the difficulties of everyday life.

Abstract Objective: the present study aimed to identify patterns of social participation in old age and the theories used to explain them. Method: A systematic review was performed using the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE / PUBMED), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Web of Science (ISI Web of Knowledge) databases. The keywords used were: social participation, social engagement, social involvement and social activities; combined with seniors, the elderly, older adults, older people and aging. Research was performed between January and February. Results: thirty-one longitudinal studies on social participation among old and healthy middle-aged adults were included for analysis. In three studies social engagement levels increased, especially at the beginning of old age (up to 75 years). Twenty-one studies presented results that described the reduction of social engagement levels in old age, and five studies found that there was no change in levels of social involvement. The most used theories were: the activity theory, the social disengagement theory, the continuity theory and the theory of socioemotional selectivity. Conclusion: the results point to the need for reflection on what is envisioned and what is practiced in terms of policies and practices aimed at achieving successful aging. Future attempts should include not only incentives to remain active, but a description of factors that influence the social disengagement associated with poor adaptation in old age.

Both psychotherapists and their clients have mental representations of old age and the aging process. In this conceptual review, we draw on available research from gerontology, social and developmental psychology, and communication science to consider how these “images of aging” may affect the psychotherapeutic process with older clients. On the basis of selected empirical findings we hypothesize that such images may affect the pathways to psychotherapy in later life, therapist-client communication, client performance on diagnostic tests as well as how therapists select and apply a therapeutic method. We posit that interventions to help both older clients and therapists to reflect on their own images of aging may increase the likelihood of successful treatment. We conclude by making suggestions for future research.

Attending to the hoped-for connection between young and older generations, this essay revisits Wordsworth's poetic fascination with the elderly and the question of what, if any, consolation for emotional and physical loss could be attained for growing old. Wordsworth's imaginative impulse is to idealise the elderly into transcendent figures, which offers the compensation of a harmonious vision to the younger generation for the losses of old age that, in all likelihood, they will themselves experience. The affirmation of such a unified and compensatory vision is dependent upon the reciprocity of sympathy that Wordsworth's poetry both sets into circulation and calls into question. Readings of ‘Simon Lee’, ‘I know an aged Man constrained to dwell’, and ‘The Old Cumberland Beggar’ point up the limitations of sympathy and vision (physical and poetic) avowed in these poems as symptomatic of Wordsworth's misgivings about the debilitating effects of growing old and old age. Finally, Wordsworth's unfolding tragedy of ‘Michael’ is interpreted as reinforcing a frequent pattern, observed elsewhere in his poetry, whereby idealised figures of old men transform into disturbingly spectral second selves of their younger counterparts or narrators. These troubling transformations reveal that at the heart of Wordsworth's poetic vision of old age as a harmonious, interconnected, and consoling state, there are disquieting fears of disunity, disconnection, disconsolation, and, lastly, death.
