To control the quality of a product to meet standards, a reliable measurable technique is needed with the company's business strategy. This research raises case studies identifying quality problems and effective ways of improvement of O Ring products using DMAIC (Define-Measures-Analyse-Improve-Control) quality control methods. Company X found the problem in the form of an average O Ring product defect ratio reaching 1.50% (the company's target is 1.30%). DMAIC is a systematic methodology that focuses on the key factors that control the performance of a process, set it at the best level and keep it at that level. Statistical tools combined with quality principles are applied to each of the DMAIC phases. In the define phase, flowcharts, critical to quality trees, and voice of customer lists are used which produce five types of defects in curing process. In the measure phase, the sigma value combined with pareto diagram are used and shows that the current sigma value is 4,178 with the biggest defect is flow-mark for the O Ring type ZZ00000123. In phase analysis, the root causes of the problem are searched using the why-why analysis and cause-effect diagrams and finds out that the causes are un-sticky rubber tip and unstandardized rubber cutting length. In the improve phase, DOE-based experiments are conducted to get the ideal rubber tip and cutting length conditions. Finally, the work standard is revised in the control phase and monitored by check sheets and control charts. The result of this DMAIC implementation was the O Ring products defect dropped to 0.83% and the sigma value rose to 4,363.Keywords: quality, DMAIC, O Ring, defect, sigma, standard

STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL (SPC) APPLIED IN THE MECHANIZED HARVEST OF SORGHUM  ABSTRACT - Harvesting is one of the main steps in the production process and it is necessary to keep the losses under control in order to reach the maximum level of quality and productivity. The present study aimed to evaluate the quantitative losses during the mechanized harvesting of forage sorghum using the statistical process control (SPC). The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (DIC), and analysis of variance was performed to verify the significant effect of declivity and operational velocity on losses, and the significant was submitted to the Tukey test at 5% significance. Sequential charts and control charts for individual and mobile amplitude values, composed of upper and lower control and average limits, were used as statistical process control tools to verify the effect of operational speed on losses. Based on the results obtained it is possible to indicate that the operational velocity range from 4 to 5 km h-1 presented the lowest variation of data, presenting no point outside of the control limit, being the ideal range for harvest. The statistical analysis showed higher losses in transportation as the slope of the terrain increased. Keywords: Mechanized harvesting, forage farming, control charts, operational speeds.

The morphometry and quality of seedlings of tree species is of fundamental importance to achieve success in reforestation or commercial exploitation project. Due to the lack of information about the ideal substrate for the production of craibeira seedlings and taking into account the diversification of the use of Tabebuia aurea production of native seedlings for the recovery of degraded areas, this work was conducted with the objective of evaluating the development of seedlings of this species produced with bovine manure and coconut fiber. The present work was carried out at the plant ecophysiology laboratory at the Agrarian Engineering and Sciences Campus (CECA), in Rio Largo, north-region of the state of Alagoas. Four treatments were used, which consisted of a mixture of soil + organic material, in the proportion 3:1. The materials used were tanned bovine manure (ESCB), coconut fiber (CFS) and control (soil). Whose proportions of the treatments were: T1: soil + 0% coconut fiber; T2: soil + 11% coconut fiber; T3: soil + 22% coconut fiber; T4: soil + 33% coconut fiber and T5: soil + 33% cattle manure. Macro and micronutrient analyses of the substrates used were performed. To meet the work objective, the following parameters were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and leaf dry matter, stem and root and chlorophyll content index. It can be concluded that the substrates chosen for evaluation showed few significant differences in relation to seedling development; the mixture of treatment 2 (soil+coconut fiber 11%) provided a higher percentage of survival and the quality of seedlings were higher; The substrate treatment 4 (soil+coconut fiber 33%) showed much lower results in all evaluated results. However, statistically there were no significant differences in relation to the other treatments and the presence of bovine manure (soil+bovine manure 33%) results in benefits such as greater nutrient supply and possible reduction of seedling costs.

Abstract An analytical method for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides in mussels, fish liver, bird liver, and seal blubber is described. Different calibration functions were tested to establish the optimal fit to the nonlinear response of all included compounds. Detection limits and within-batch variations were determined from standard deviations of duplicate analyses of real samples. Within-batch, between-batch, and total relative standard deviations were calculated from regular use of control material. Percentage recovery was estimated by spiking samples with 3 selected PCB congeners and by spiking selected samples with all compounds included in the procedure. Quality assurance is described, covering analysis of about 450 samples divided into 38 batches. Because between-batch variation was twice the within-batch variation, the use of in-house control material and control charts is considered to be mandatory for this type of analyses. Use of certified reference material and regular participation in intercomparison exercises have demonstrated the high quality of the method and the adequacy of the quality assurance applied.

We have designed and built an electronic device which compares the resistance of a defined area of vacuum evaporated material with a variable resistor. When the two resistances are matched, the device automatically disconnects the primary side of the substrate transformer and stops further evaporation. This approach to controlled evaporation in conjunction with the modified guns and evaporation source permits reliably reproducible multiple Pt shadow films from a single Pt wrapped carbon point source. The reproducibility from consecutive C point sources is also reliable. Furthermore, the device we have developed permits us to select a predetermined resistance so that low contrast high-resolution shadows, heavy high contrast shadows, or any grade in between can be selected at will. The reproducibility and quality of results are demonstrated in Figures 1-4 which represent evaporations at various settings of the variable resistor.

Boilerplate—the fine-print terms and conditions that we become subject to when we click “I agree” online, rent an apartment, or enter an employment contract, for example—pervades all aspects of our modern lives. On a daily basis, most of us accept boilerplate provisions without realizing that should a dispute arise about a purchased good or service, the nonnegotiable boilerplate terms can deprive us of our right to jury trial and relieve providers of responsibility for harm. Boilerplate is the first comprehensive treatment of the problems posed by the increasing use of these terms, demonstrating how their use has degraded traditional notions of consent, agreement, and contract, and sacrificed core rights whose loss threatens the democratic order. This book examines attempts to justify the use of boilerplate provisions by claiming either that recipients freely consent to them or that economic efficiency demands them, and it finds these justifications wanting. It argues that our courts, legislatures, and regulatory agencies have fallen short in their evaluation and oversight of the use of boilerplate clauses. To improve legal evaluation of boilerplate, the book offers a new analytical framework, one that takes into account the nature of the rights affected, the quality of the recipient's consent, and the extent of the use of these terms. It goes on to offer possibilities for new methods of boilerplate evaluation and control, and concludes by discussing positive steps that NGOs, legislators, regulators, courts, and scholars could take to bring about better practices.
