ABSTRACT Background:Metabolic changes seen after obstructive jaundice increase the load of oxidative stress.The thiol-disulphide homeostasis (TDB) has a vital importance as oxidatice stress biomarker. Aim: The aim of present study is to investigate the dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis in patients diagnosed with obstructive jaundice and to compare the dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis with ischemia modified albumin. Study design: A total of 146 participants who were admitted to emergency department and who consisted of 69 patients and 77 healthy volunteers, were included in the study. Detailed blood samples were obtained from the patients at the time of admission. Methods: Thiol / disulphide levels were examined using a novel method developed by Erel and Neselioglu on the patients diagnosed with obstructive jaundice during the admission. Data were evaluated in computer system. Results: The levels of total thiol (p =0.025) and native thiol (p =0.023) were statistically significantly lower in the patient with obstructive jaundice than in the control group. It was observed that there was a significant negative correlation between the native thiol levels and the ALP (r =-0.262, p<0.01), urea (r =-0.313, p<0.01), total bilirubin (r =-0.388, p<0.01), direct bilirubin (r =-0.351, p<0.01) levels. At the same time, the level of disulphide (p = 0.235) was lower in the patient group than in the control group but not statistically significant. It was found that the ischemia modified albumin (IMA) values were lower in the control group than the obstructive jaundice group (p = 0.03). Conclusion: Total thiol, native thiol and IMA levels decrease in obstructive jaundice pathogenesis.

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of thiol disulfide homeostasis and Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) values in predicting the technical difficulties that might be encountered during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Materials and Methods: The study included 65 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy due to cholelithiasis at the General Surgery Clinic of Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital. All patients’ demographic data, previous history of cholecystitis, a history of chronic illness, preoperative white blood count (WBC), liver function tests (AST, ALT), amylase and lipase levels, intra-operative adhesion score, the ultrasonographic appearance of gallbladder, duration on hospital stay, duration of operation, thiol disulfide and IMA values were evaluated. Results: Native thiol and total thiol averages were higher in patients without a history of cholecystitis, on the other hand, disulfide, disulfide/native thiol rate, disulfide/total thiol rate, native thiol/total thiol rate and IMA averages were higher in patients with a history of cholecystitis. While there was a statistically significant negative correlation between native and total thiol values and age, duration of surgery and duration of hospital stay; IMA, disulfide, disulfide/Total thiol, Native/Total thiol and disulfide/Native thiol rates were higher in older patients with a longer duration of surgery and hospital stay. In addition, preoperative IMA, disulfide, disulfide/Total thiol, Native/Total thiol and disulfide/Native thiol were observed to increase as the degree of intraoperative pericholecystic adhesion increased. Conclusion: We believe that the evaluation of thiol disulfide homeostasis and IMA parameters prior to laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be used as an effective method for predicting intraoperative difficulties.

Introduction: Trauma is the most common cause of death in childhood. Tissue damage, ischemia-reperfusion injury and inflammatory response are mainly responsible for increasing serbest oxiygen radicals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the use of thiol-disulfide and ischemia-modified albumin levels as a diagnostic laboratory parameter in trauma children. Method: Of 202 children, 101 of them were hospitalized in pediatric surgical intensive care unit with trauma and 101 of others were healthy children. Levels of native thiol (-SH), total thiol (SH + SS), dynamic disulfide (SS), dynamic disulfide (SS) / total thiol (SH + SS), albumin and ischemic modified albumin (IMA) were measured from the sera of patients and healthy volunteers. For statistical analyses, SPSS 17.0 was used. Mann-Whitney U and paired correlation test were used where appropriate. p <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean age of the patients in the trauma group (Boys: 61 Girls: 40) was 7,88 years and the control group was 8,00 years. In trauma group, 86 of children were exposed to blunt trauma, 15 of children had penetrating trauma and 54 patients had multiple trauma. Surgical procedures were performed in 17 patients. In the trauma group, native thiol, total thiol, dynamic disulfide / total thiol, albumin and IMA levels were significantly lower than that of control (p <0.001) and their dynamic disulfide (p = 0.001) was higher compared to the control. There was no difference thiol-disulfide parametres in trauma groups sub-division as surgery(n=17) vs. follow-up(n=84) groups or multiple trauma(n=54) vs. isolated organ trauma(n=47) groups, or penetrating(n=15) or blunt trauma(n=86) groups. Conclusion: Thiol-disulfide balance and IMA levels show changes in favor of oxidative stress in children with trauma, however, it cannot be used as a laboratory marker that helps to show the system and organ affected by the trauma and to decide the surgical intervention.

Welders’ lung disease refers to mixed exposure to different kinds of metals and chemicals from welding fumes, which affect all parts of the respiratory tract including airways and parenchyma together. This study aimed to investigate the oxidative status in patients with welders’ lung (PWL) by means of thiol-disulfide homeostasis and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels. The male welder workers diagnosed with welders’ lung disease and healthy individuals were recruited in the study. Plasma levels of disulfide, disulfide/native thiol ratio, disulfide/total thiol ratio, IMA, and catalase (CAT) were determined. Pulmonary function test parameters of both groups were compared. The thiol-disulfide homeostasis parameters of PWL and control group were as follows: disulfide (20.5 ± 6.3 vs. 16.2 ± 3.9 μmol L−1, p < 0.001), disulfide/native thiol (4.36 (1.59) vs. 4.0 (1.64), p = 0.024), and disulfide/total thiol (4.01 (1.34) vs. 3.71 (1.41), p = 0.024). IMA levels in PWL were significantly higher than the control group (1.37 (0.27) mg dL−1 vs. 0.49 (0.61) mg dL−1, p < 0.001), whereas CAT activities were significantly higher in the control group (106.6 (54.5) kU L−1 vs. 78.3 (67.8) kU L−1, p = 0.003). The findings of the present study revealed that oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathogenesis of welders’ lung disease. Plasma thiol-disulfide homeostasis and IMA levels might be indicators of oxidative stress in PWL.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acupuncture on dynamic thiol–disulphide homeostasis and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels as a novel oxidative stress parameter in migraine patients. Acupuncture treatment was applied to the 22 volunteer migraine patients. The acupuncture treatment consists of 5 sessions with 2 sessions per week. Blood samples have been collected before performing acupuncture, after the 1st session and after the 5th session of the acupuncture. And for the control group blood samples were collected only once. A total of 44 participants were included in the study, and 24 of whom were diagnosed with migraine. The total thiol, native thiol and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in the serum were measured in all patients and healthy individuals. The dynamic disulphide bond and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels were calculated from these values. The total and native thiol levels of migraine patients participating in the study were found to be significantly higher than the total and native thiol levels of healthy individuals. The total thiol, native thiol, and dynamic disulphide bond levels, and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) were correlated with attack frequency, pain intensity, or migraine type. Thiol-disülfide homeostasis can play roles in the etiology and severity of Migraine.

Studying the influence of grain characteristics on fluid flow in complex porous rock is one of the most important premises to reveal the permeability mechanism. Previous studies have mainly investigated the fluid flow laws in complex rock structures using an uncontrollable one single parameter of natural rock models or oversimplified control group models. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a novel method to reconstruct models that can independently control one single parameter of rock grain membranes based on mapping and reverse-mapping ideas. The lattice Boltzmann method is used to analyze the influence of grain parameters (grain radius, space, roundness, orientation, and model resolution) on the permeability characteristics (porosity, connectivity, permeability, flow path, and flow velocity). Results show that the grain radius and space have highly positive and negative correlations with permeability properties. The effect of grain roundness and resolution on permeability properties shows a strong regularity, while grain orientation on permeability properties shows strong randomness. This study is of great significance to reveal the fluid flow laws of natural rock structures.

β-glucuronidase (BG) activity is a promising biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis after exposure to organophosphorous (OP) pesticides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in serum BG activity in patients with acute OP poisoning and to determine whether these changes correlate with the severity of poisoning. Thirty patients with anticholinesterase pesticide poisoning were included, besides 10 healthy volunteers as a control group. Serum activities of butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) and BG were measured for each subject on admission, then after 12 and 24 h. Serum levels of BuChE and BG in poisoned patients were significantly different from the control subjects; these differences persisted in repeated measurements. Moreover, the serum levels showed significant differences within each group of the three time points. A significant negative correlation was found between the serum activities of BuChE and BG in all groups at the three time points. In conclusion, serum BG activity seems a reliable marker for OP poisoning even when measured at 24 h after poisoning.

Background/Aim. According to currently available data, there is no research dealing with evaluating empathy in adolescents with conduct disorders in our region. The aim of the research was to examine the differences in the severity of cognitive and affective empathy in adolescents with and with no conduct disorder, as well as to examine the relationship between cognitive and affective empathy and the level of externalization in adolescents with conduct disorder. Methods. This research was conducted on 171 adolescents, aged 15 to 18, using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Youth Self- Report and a Questionnaire constructed for the purpose of this research. Results. The results showed that adolescents with conduct disorder had significantly lower scores for Perspective Taking (t = 3.255, p = 0.001), Fantasy (t = 2.133, p = 0.034) and Empathic Concern (t = 2.479, p = 0.014) compared to the adolescents in the control group, while the values for Personal Distress (t = 1.818, p = 0.071) were higher compared to the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant. The study showed a statistically significant negative correlation between Perspective Taking and aggression (r = - 0.318, p = 0.003) and a negative correlation between Perspective Taking and the overall level of externalizing problems (r = -0.310, p = 0.004) in the group of adolescents with conduct disorder. Conclusion. This research contributes to better understanding of behavioral disorders in terms of individual factors, especially empathic reactivity. Preventive work with young people who have behavioral problems associated with empathy deficit disorder proved to be an important tool in preventing the development, or at least relieving the symptoms, of this ever more common disorder.

Aims: To investigate the anti-oxidant activity of the methanolic extracts of Caryota no seeds in Drosophila melanogaster (DM). Study Design: Experimental design. Place and Duration: Sample: African Centre of Excellence for Phytomedicine Research and Development, University of Jos, Jos Plateau State Nigeria between June 2018 and February 2019.                                                                                                                                                     Methodology: These assays were conducted by exposing 50 flies per vial to the selected concentrations (350 mg, 400 mg and 500 mg) of the extract in 5 independent replicates for seven days while control group received distilled water. The total protein content was then determined from the supernatant of the fly homogenate. The antioxidant activity and levels of GST, CAT and total thiol were then measured. The statistical difference among test groups was presumed at P < .05.                                                                                                         Results: The methanolic extract of Caryota no caused nonsignificant (P = .33) decrease in total proteins in DM below basal levels in a dose-dependent pattern.  The antioxidant activity showed nonsignificant (P = .28) lowering of the GST activity in DM below control levels. The methanolic extract of CN nonsignificantly (P > .05) increased the levels of catalase (P = .36) and total thiol levels (P = .22).                                                                                                       Conclusion: It can therefore be concluded that the methanolic extract of Caryota no contains appreciable concentrations of different types of antioxidants. This may provide perspectives for the evaluation and development of effective and safe phytomedicines created from the local biodiversity.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the salivary miRNA31 expression in controls and cases and associate miRNA31 levels with clinical parameters of oral submucous fibrosis. Methods: This case control study was conducted in a hospital setup. A total of 50 individuals participated in the study with 25 subjects in group I (healthy individuals) and 25 subjects in group II 25 diagnosed cases of (oral submucous fibrosis). The sample size was calculated with open Epi version 3.01.  A detailed assessment of clinical parameters of oral submucous fibrosis was made. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected from all study subjects meeting the inclusion criteria and analysis of saliva samples was done by qRTPCR. Results: The results showed high expression levels of miRNA31 in oral submucous fibrosis as compared to the control group. The study demonstrated significantly higher median fold change of miRNA-31 expression level in OSMF patients as compared to the participants in the control group. Correlation between age of patients and miRNA31 fold change was discerned using the Spearman rank test that demonstrated a non-significant negative correlation. Conclusion: Increased expression levels of miRNA 31 among oral submucous fibrosis as compared to the control group make it a promising salivary biomarker that detects oral submucous fibrosis at an early stage of the disease.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the correlation between ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels and coronary collateral circulation (CCC) in patients with chronic total occlusive (CTO). Methods: Coronary angiography was performed in the Department of Cardiology, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from 2017-08 to 2019-02 to identify 128 patients with CTO lesions in at least one major coronary artery. According to the Rentrop evaluation criteria, the degree of CCC formation was divided into the poor CCC formation group (Rentrop0-1 grade,n=69) and the good CCC formation group(Rentrop2-3 grade,n=59). The IMA level of the patients was measured using an albumin-cobalt binding assay. The general data, routine blood panel, total bilirubin (TBIL), blood lipids, uric acid (UA), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and other indicators of the patients were recorded and analyzed while assessing the patients' blood vessel occlusion. Results: The proportion of platelet count and diabetes in the poor CCC group was higher than that in the good CCC group (P<0.05). The ratio of ischemia-modified albumin and total bilirubin in the poor CCC group was lower than that in the good CCC group (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that ischemia-modified albumin was positively correlated with CCC formation [OR=1.190,95% CI(1.092-1.297),P<0.001], while diabetes was negatively correlated with CCC formation [OR=0.285,95% CI(0.094-0.864),P<0.05]. Ischemic modified albumin predicted good formation of CCC according to the ROC curve, and the area under the ROC curve was 0.769(95% CI:0.686-0.851,P<0.001); the optimal cut-off value was 63.35 KU/L, and the sensitivity was 71.2%,specificity is 71%. Conclusion: The IMA level is closely related to good formation of CCC. Higher IMA levels can be used as an effective predictor of good CCC formation in patients with CTO.
