The present study aims to research the effect of age on the quality of ejaculates of rams from Synthetic population of Bulgarian dairy breed. Rams divided into two age groups were used for the experiment: G1 (2.5 years) versus G2 (6 years). Ejaculates were obtained by the method of artificial vagina and diluted with medium 6A-G. The tested ejaculates were obtained outside the breeding season. A Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA Microptic, Barcelona, Spain) was used to study sperm motility. The biochemical activity of the enzymes lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) was determined using an automatic Mindrai BA88 spectrophotometer. The activity of the enzymes was studied in sperm plasma, in aqueous and tritonic extract. Significant differences between the groups were found in total sperm motility (P?0.05) and LDH enzyme activity in sperm plasma (P?0.01). Regarding the efficiency of the LDH enzyme in aqueous and tritone extract, no significant differences between the groups was found. No significant differences were found between groups for GGT activity, while age had significant impact on LDH enzyme in sperm plasma.

The aims of this paper were to asses the quality of life with the use of the SF36 Questionnaire in patients with chronic heart failure and to establish the relationship between specific biochemical variables and the various aspects of the quality of life. The scores for various components of the quality of life were significantly affected by hemoglobin levels, creatinine clearance, fibrinogen levels and gamma-glutamyl-transferase levels, while lipid fractions and liver enzymes did not proove to have a significant impact on the quality of life.

The success of beef cattle reproduction development in Indonesia very much depends on the quality of the semen produced by the Indonesian Institute for Artificial Insemination. Good quality bull will benefit farmers, frozen semen producers, and the country in large. This study aimed to determine effect of age and breed on the libido and quality of bull semen collected in the Regional Artificial Insemination Center (RAIC). This study used PO, Simmental, and Brahman Bull in RAIC Yogyakarta, with a total amount of 15, aged 4-7 years old. Semen was collected using an artificial vagina, semen evaluation used a spectrophotometer, and eosin-nigrosin staining method used for sperm viability and abnormalities examination. The result of this study indicated that bull breed did not affect the libido value and the semen quality of bulls (P>0,05). Volume, concentration, motility, and viability in various age groups did not show significant differences (P>0,05), but age groups had a significant effect on sperm abnormalities (P<0,05). The group of bulls aged 5-6 years showed the best quality compared to other groups, with the volume 4,58 ± 1,37 ml, concentration 1,91 ± 0,36 x109/ml, motility 3,80 ± 1,30, viability 89.83 ± 10.69%, and sperm abnormalities 2.51 ± 0.81%. It can be concluded that breed did not affect the bull libido and semen quality, while age had an effect on bull sperm abnormalities.

Forty male lambs of the mountain Greek breed were used to evaluate the effect of age at slaughter on carcass characteristics and composition. The slaughter of lambs was carried out at the age of 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days. The slaughter procedure, carcass dissection and carcass composition were realized according to the standard method of CIHEAM-AGRIMED programme. The results of this work showed that the lambs of different age groups did not differ in dressing percentage significantly. The proportion of muscles showed a tendency of increase with the increasing slaughter age but the differences were not significant. The proportion of total fat in carcass increased with the increasing slaughter age from 20.84 to 23.59% for the age group of 30 and 90 days, respectively (P &lt; 0.05). On the contrary, as the age at slaughter increased, the proportion of bones decreased (P &lt; 0.05). Subcutaneous, intermuscular, perinephric and pelvic fats increased with the slaughter age, but only the subcutaneous fat was influenced significantly (P &lt; 0.05). Among the different commercial cuts proportions of long leg, first 5 ribs and shoulder decreased, while those of last 8 ribs-loin and breast-flank increased (P &lt; 0.05). The overall results suggest that the slaughter age of lambs of the mountain Greek breed should be increased from the present ~45 days to more advanced age of 75 or 90 days in order to improve the farmers&rsquo; profits without serious negative effects on the quality of carcasses or meat of lambs. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Values of various blood plasma tests have been determined in heavy drinkers admitted to an Alcoholism Unit and in a reference group of occasional social drinkers. These tests were total protein, albumin, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), asparate amino transferase (AST) and amylase. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of GGT and AST as indices of alcohol intake in heavy drinkers entering an Alcoholism Unit. The data indicate that in the patients group intra-personal variance and analytical variances are relatively small compared with the between-person variance. The data also indicate, however, that in the patients group GGT and AST are not valid group indices of alcohol intake since the between-person variation is large and the correlation with alcohol intake is weak due to large differences in the dose-response relationship between individuals. AST and GGT are poor indicators of alcohol intake in admissions to an Alcoholism Unit.

Plasma membrane composition has impact on phase transition from liquid crystal to gel state of cooled sperm cell. The incorporation of polyunsaturated fatty acids increases its fluidity and can contribute to sperm motility. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of adding docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and ?-tocopherol (?-Toh) to the cooling extender, singly or combined, to the equine sperm parameters, submitted to cooling, up to 72 hours. Two ejaculates of ten stallions collected with artificial vagina were used, and evaluated for motility, plasma membrane integrity, chromatin fragmentation, mitochondrial activity and lipid peroxidation, according to the following treatments: C; DHA; ?-Toh; DHA/?-Toh; EtOH 100: and EtOH 140 (corresponding to control; 10 ng mL-1 of DHA; 2 mM of ?-Toh; : 10 ng mL-1 of DHA + 2 mM of ?-Toh; 100 µL of ethanol and 140 µL of ethanol respectively). DHA treatment showed higher motility (68.2 ± 12.3; p < 0.05) when compared to control (62.1 ± 16.2), DHA/?-Toh (61.3 ± 12.7) and EtOH (58.1 ± 8.6) groups. In lipid peroxidation assay, the control group showed 2,506.2 ± 796.4 ng of MDA 108 spermatozoa-1, being significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the groups treated with DHA (2,036.0 ± 687.0), ?-Toh (1,890.8 ± 749.5) and DHA/?-Toh (1,821.1 ± 627.2). In conclusion, ?-Toh was effective in diminishing lipid peroxidation of equine sperm subjected to cooling, and DHA improved sperm motility and, in spite of being a polyunsaturated fatty acid with high susceptibility to peroxidation, reduced lipid peroxidation.

East Nusa Tenggara is a province of high alcohol abuse in Indonesia. Ngada Regency has a prevalence of 38.8%. The high prevalence is inseparable from traditional factors and socio-cultural norms which strongly influence the habit of consuming alcohol, the cold temperature in this area further strengthens this habit. The impact of alcohol consumption is the emergence of various types of diseases, one of which is impaired liver function such as alcoholic liver disease. The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between alcohol consumption and impaired liver function in communities in Bajawa and Golewa Districts, Ngada Regency. This research method is an observational analytic with cross-sectional design. The research subjects were 55 people who consumed alcohol in Golewa and Bajawa Districts, who had met the inclusion criteria. Alcohol consumption was measured by the AUDIT (The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) questionnaire, while the parameter for liver disorders was the level of Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT). The prevalence of liver dysfunction based on GGT examination was 15%. Meanwhile, the relationship between alcohol consumption and impaired liver function was tested with the Spearman correlation with α 0.05, the correlation value was p = 0.413, which means it has a moderate or significant, not too strong relationship. It is recommended that the people of Ngada Regency reduce alcohol consumption so that it can reduce the risk of impaired liver function.

Abstract Background Effective and applicable predictors of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are needed for the non-obese Chinese population. We investigated whether serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) was associated with incident NAFLD in the non-obese Chinese population. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study that enrolled a total of 33153 initially NAFLD-free individuals who underwent a health examination in Wenzhou Medical Center of Wenzhou People’s Hospital from January 2010 to December 2014. We determined the relationship between GGT at enrollment and incident NAFLD during follow-up in 11906 persons. The relationship between GGT levels and incident NAFLD was analyzed using Cox regression and generalized additive models after adjustment for demographic and clinical variables. In addition, we also performed a subgroup analysis, which was explored by Cox proportional hazard models. It was stated that the data had been downloaded from the DATADRYAD website. Result Multivariable Cox regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for GGT with incident NAFLD after adjusted demographic and clinical variables. (HR, 1.010; 95% CI, 1.007–1.012; P < 0.001). The incident NAFLD in the highest quartile of GGT levels was 3.653 times as high (95% confidence interval, 2.915 to 4.579) as that in the lowest quartile. A non-linear relationship was firstly detected between GGT and incidence of NAFLD, which had an inflection point of GGT was 26U/L. The effect sizes and the confidence intervals on the left and right sides of the inflection point were 1.104(1.089–1.120)and 1.001༈0.999–1.004༉, respectively. In subgroup analyses, the hazard ratio for incident NAFLD remained consistent across subgroups. Conclusion In conclusion, the GGT level in the non-obese Chinese population was statistically significantly associated with incident NAFLD. The relationship between GGT level and incident NAFLD is non-linear. When GGT level is less than 26 U/L, GGT was strong positively with incident NAFLD.

The goal of the study was to examine the effect of age and sex on the quality of wild boar offal and meat. A number of 32 hunt-harvested animals was assigned to groups according to age (juveniles and sub-adults) and sex. The quality of offal (liver, kidneys, heart and tongue) and m. semimembranosus was examined. The pH value of m. semimembranosus ranged from 5.45 to 5.88. The highest pH was recorded in the kidney and the liver (6.32–6.54 and 6.12–6.31). The meat in the group of juveniles was brighter (p = 0.042), yellower (p = 0.039), showed a greater drip loss (p = 0.007), cooking loss (p = 0.039), and plasticity (p = 0.028), compared to the sub-adults. The extractable fat content in the m. semimembranosus and offal (p = 0.004), and water to crude protein ratio (p = 0.033), also differed between age groups. The results of the study show different quality attributes of offal and meat of wild boars from two age groups. The obtained quality measures suggest that the culinary and technological usefulness of offal and meat from the wild boars may differ according to the age of hunted animals.
