Profitability is a motivational factor in any enterprise. The study compared the profitability of sole maize and maize/melon intercrop in Osun State. A purposive sampling technique was used and primary data collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, budgetary technique, inferential statistics and regression techniques were used to analyse the data collected. The majority of the respondents were active, male, had formal education and had less than 21 years of experience in cropping systems. The estimated net return to management was N59,323.83 per sole maize farmer or N37, 548.75 per hectare per year and N175,178.68 per farmer or N102, 832.17 per hectare for maize/melon. Budgetary analysis results showed that both sole maize and maize/melon intercrop were profitable. The multiple regressions for maize/melon intercrop revealed that 94.2% of variation in profit was obtained by independent variables in the model. The multiple regressions for the sole maize profit function revealed that 62.3% of variation in profit was obtained by independent variables in the model. The costs of input used, labour employed and quantity sold were the major determinants of profitability. The appropriate policies to enable the farmers to have access to inputs at a subsidised rate should be put in place.

This study investigated socio-economic determinants of utilization of manual screw press for cassava mash dehydration for gari production in four local government areas across the ADP zones in Kwara state, Nigeria. Using random sampling technique and a semi-structured questionnaire as a research instrument, data for the study were collected from a sample of three hundred and eighty-four (384) gari processors who use the screw press in the state. Multiple regression analysis shows that a correlation (R=0.678) exist between utilization of the screw press and the independent variables which include age, household size, level of education, years of processing experience, extension visits, and income from gari processing. R2 value of 0.460 indicates that about 46% of the variation in utilization was explained by socio-economic variables included in the regression model. Three variables significantly influenced the decision of the respondents to utilize the manual screw press: age, level of experience, and income; the most important predicator being income with a Beta value of 0.699. Conclusively, it was recommended among others that research, extension, and policy makers consider the significant determinants identified in the study seriously if increased utilization is to be achieved by gari processors and others similar to them in the study area and the region.

The study assessed aquaculture table-size fish farmer’s activities in the Kainji Lake basin, Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined aquaculture  activities in the area, assessed market information, channels and support organizations, and identified the major constraints to aquaculture table- size fish farming in the area. A two-stage sampling technique was used to select 120 table-size fish farmers. Primary data were collected with a questionnaire and presented using descriptive statistics. The result shows that majority of the respondents were males (82.1%), with mean age of 36.7 years, 53.8% had tertiary educational qualification while 66.7% had more than six years’ experience in fish farming. Majority (92%) of the table-size fish farmers operate with less than two ponds, 51% practice earthen pond system, while 91% of the farmers engage in the business for the purpose of generating income. Majority (90%) of the farmers sell their farmed fish after six months, 80% of the sales take place at farm-gate level, 80% of the owners of the fish farms are contacted directly by fish buyers. Also, majority (53.8%) of the fish buyers are the middle men who buy and resell to other fish users (processors, consumers, farmers etc). The major constraints to table-size fish farming were inadequate capital (46.2%), poor water management (33.3%), high cost of feed (10.3%) and poor pricing (10.3%). It is therefore recommended that fish farmers should form  strong Farmer Associations to enable them combat the issues of accessing capital and poor pricing. This will aid in business expansion as the farmers will take advantage of economy of scale. Key words: aquaculture, table-size, fish, farmers
