With the increased global public health awareness, there is an increase in ultimatum calls for functional foodstuff with various health impacts. The utilisation of therapeutic foodstuff to avert illnesses like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease is obtaining motion among people. Chia seeds are dietary and medicinal species used as a herb in the ancient period by Aztec and Mayan communities. Chia is receiving scientific attention in the present time and is a non-conventional seed that has been recognised as a novel food. It is a customary food in Southern and Central America. It contains large amounts of phytochemicals and proteins, making it more consumed worldwide for its numerous health benefits to sustain healthy serum fat levels. These seeds contain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids with anti-inflammatory effects, promote cognitive performance, and lower cholesterol levels. Caffeic acid found in the seeds has antioxidant compounds that protect the body from free radicals, cancer and contains anti-ageing properties. Fibres are present in high concentrations, are connected with lowering inflammation, controls bowel movement, and reduce cholesterol levels. Chia seeds contain the nutritional value that aid in disease control, such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, obesity, and heart disease. The presence of omega-6 and omega-3 present in chia seed and active compounds makes the chia seed contain crucial health benefits. Nevertheless, the efficacy and safety of natural food require validation by numerous scientific research and studies. Nowadays, most species are utilised worldwide for their nutritional characteristics and beneficial impacts on human health. The review summarises the recent information on chia seed, emphasising the phytochemicals, bioactivities, and applications.

Background: Snehan(oleation) has a great role in all Panchakarma procedures. The therapeutic procedure by which greasiness is imparted to the body using different kinds of fat (Ghrita, Tail, Vasa, Majja etc) is called Snehan. Snehpan where fat substances are given in increasing doses by Ayurveda physicians, patients may have a fear that it will increase their cholesterol levels, there is this belief that if you consume ghrita, oil etc, it will in- crease your cholesterol levels and also increases the risk of heart disease. We conducted lipid profile reports be- fore and after Shodhnarth Snehpan in 10 patients in Janseva Ayurvedic Hospital, Surendranagar, Gujarat, India. Objectives: to observe Lipid Profile changes before and after Shodhanarth Snehpan. Management and Out- come: S. cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL, VLDL in all 10 patients were decreased. HDL however increased which is good cholesterol. Conclusion: The study requires a large group for more specific data. From this study, we can say Snehpan does not increase S.cholesterol levels. Introduction: Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) is a type of low-density lipoprotein and the most widely transported cholesterol in the body. Increased levels of LDL in the body can be affected by genetics, age, gender, obesity, physical activity, lifestyle, drug consumption and smoking. Substances in a cigarette can cause an increase of LDL levels. Increased of LDL cholesterol levels can cause Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). The purpose of this research is to know the description of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) levels on smoker and non-smoker adolescent in Buyan Hamlet, Pancasari Village, Sukasada District, Buleleng Bali. Method: The type of this research is descriptive. This research was conducted in April-May 2017, which used fasting blood samples of 42 respondents. Result: From the average result of LDL level in smoker adolescent that is 134,91 mg/dL higher than the average of LDL level in non-smoker adolescent that is 74,90 mg/dL. The result of LDL cholesterol levels was determined by 21 smoker adolescent respondents with the close to optimal category (100-129 mg/dL) as many as 9 people (42,8%), and 12 people (57,3%) with worry category (130-159 mg/dL). Whereas in 21 non-smoker adolescent respondents obtained  result of LDL cholesterol level test with optimal category (<100 mg/dL) counted 18 people (87,71%) and 3 person (14,30%) with close to optimal category (100-129 mg/dL). Discussion: Based on the results of this research can be concluded that in smoker adolescent obtained LDL levels with close to optimal category and worrying whereas in non-smoker adolescents obtained LDL levels in the optimal category and close to optimal.

With increasing public health awareness worldwide, demand for functional food with multiple health benefits has also increased. The use of medicinal food from folk medicine to prevent diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular problems is now gaining momentum among the public. Seed fromSalvia hispanicaL. or more commonly known as chia is a traditional food in central and southern America. Currently, it is widely consumed for various health benefits especially in maintaining healthy serum lipid level. This effect is contributed by the presence of phenolic acid and omega 3/6 oil in the chia seed. Although the presence of active ingredients in chia seed warrants its health benefits, however, the safety and efficacy of this medicinal food or natural product need to be validated by scientific research.In vivoand clinical studies on the safety and efficacy of chia seed are still limited. This paper covers the up-to-date research on the identified active ingredients, methods for oil extraction, andin vivoand human trials on the health benefit of chia seed, and its current market potential.

Background The term ‘superfoods’ is used to market foods considered to have significant health benefits. ‘Superfoods’ are claimed to prevent diseases as well as improving overall health, though the lack of explicit criteria means that any food can be labelled ‘super’ without support from scientific research. Typically, these ‘superfoods’ are rich in a particular nutrient for example antioxidants or omega-3 fatty acids. The objective of this study was to investigate the nutritional properties of a selection of superfood seeds: flax, chia, hulled sunflower and two types of processed hemp seeds and determine whether they may have potential health benefits. Methods We developed a simple aqueous extraction method for ground seeds and analysed their composition by mineral, protein and monosaccharide analyses. Cell viability assays were performed on Caco-2 and IEC-6 intestinal epithelial cells using increasing doses of the prepared extracts. Results Increased cell viability was observed in both cell lines with increasing concentrations of the flax seed, chia seed or hulled sunflower extracts (P < 0.05). Compositional analyses revealed the presence of polysaccharides, proteins and essential minerals in the aqueous extracts and in vitro assays showed sunflower had the highest antioxidant activity. However, differences in extract composition and antioxidant properties could not be directly related to the observed increase in cell viability suggesting that other components in the extracts may be responsible. Future studies will further characterize these extracts and investigate whether they are beneficial for gastrointestinal health.

AbstractThe attraction of novel foods proceeds alongside epidemic cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and related risk factors. Dieticians have identified chia (Salvia hispanica) as a product with a catalog of potential health benefits relating to these detriments. Chia is currently consumed not only as seeds, but also as oil, which brings about similar effects. Chia seeds and chia seed oil are used mainly as a food commodity and the oil is also used popularly as a dietary ingredient used in various dietary supplements available in the U. S. market. Chia seed is rich in α-linolenic acid, the biological precursor to eicosapentaenoic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid, and docosahexaenoic acid. Because the body cannot synthesize α-linolenic acid, chia has a newfound and instrumental role in diet. However, the inconclusive nature of the scientific communityʼs understanding of its safety warrants further research and appropriate testing. The focus of this work is to summarize dietary health benefits of S. hispanica seed and oil to acknowledge concerns of adverse events from its ingestion, to assess current research in the field, and to highlight the importance of quality compendial standards to support safe use. To achieve this end, a large-scale literature search was partaken on the two well-known databases, PubMed and SciFinder. Hundreds of articles detailing such benefits as decreased blood glucose, decreased waist circumference and weight in overweight adults, and improvements in pruritic skin and endurance in distance runners have been recorded. These benefits must be considered within the appropriate circumstances.

Chia seeds are rich sources of different macro and micronutrients associated with health benefits; thus, they may be considered as a functional food. However, the composition depends on the variety, origin, climate and soil. Here, we show a comprehensive characterization of extractable and non-extractable phenolic compounds of dark chia seed Salvia hispanica L. using high-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–quadrupole time-of-flight (HPLC-ESI-QTOF) and discuss potential health benefits associated with the presence of a number of nutritional and bioactive compounds. We report that dark chia from Jalisco is a high-fiber food, containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential amino acids (phenylalanine and tryptophan), and nucleosides (adenosine, guanidine and uridine), and rich in antioxidant phenolic compounds, mainly caffeic acid metabolites. Our data suggest that chia seeds may be used as ingredients for the development of functional foods and dietary supplements.

The article analyzes the role of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially omega-3 series in humans and animals. The biosynthesis of essential PUFA in humans and animals is very limited, so they must be consumed with food (feed). Тhe ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 PUFA is very important. Biomembranes of animal cells contain about 30% PUFA with a ratio of ω-6/ ω-3 1-2. As this ratio increases, the physicochemical properties of biomembranes and the functional activity of their receptors change. The regulatory function of essential PUFA is that in the body under the action of oxygenase enzymes (cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase) are formed extremely active hormone-like substances (eicosanoids and docosanoids), which affect a number of physiological processes: inflammation, immunity, metabolism. Moreover, ω-6 PUFA form eicosanoids, which have pro-inflammatory, immunosuppressive properties, and ω-3 PUFAs form eicosanoids and docosanoids, which have anti-inflammatory and immunostimulatory properties. Deficiency of essential PUFA, and especially ω-3 PUFA, leads to impaired development of the body and its state of health, which are manifestations of avitaminosis F. Prevention and treatment of avitaminosis F is carried out with drugs that contain PUFA. To create new, more effective vitamin F preparations, it is necessary to reproduce the model of vitamin F deficiency. An experimental model of vitamin F deficiency in white rats kept on a fat –free diet with the addition of coconut oil, which is almost completely free of unsaturated fatty acids, and saturated fatty acids make up almost 99 % of all fatty acids was developed. The total content of ω-6 PUFA (sum of linoleic and arachidonic acids), the content of ω-3 PUFA (α-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids) in neutral lipids (triglycerides and cholesterol esters) defined. Тhe content of ω-6 PUFA under the influence of coconut oil decreased by 3.3 times, and the content of ω-3 PUFA - by 7.5 times. Тhe influence of coconut oil, the content of ω-6 PUFA decreased by 2.1 times, and the content of ω-3 PUFA - by 2.8 times. The most strongly reduces the content of ω-3 PUFA, namely eicosapentaenoic, coconut oil, starting from 5 %. Consumption of FFD with a content of 15 % coconut oil reduces the content of eicosapentaenoic acid to zero, ie we have an absolute deficiency of one of the most important essential PUFAs, which determined the presence of vitamin F deficiency.

To evaluate possibilities of aspirin-induced gastroduodenopathy treatment in the patients with chronic ischemic heart disease by means of applying the internal endogenous prostaglandins stimulant.  Material and methods. 340 patients suffering from chronic coronary heart disease and receiving a long-term acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) therapy were examined on the base of the cardiovascular care unit of The Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital named after N.A. Semaschko. There were evaluated frequency, nature and severity of the aspirin-induced gastroduodenopathy. The patients with coronary heart disease and aspirin-induced gastroduodenopathy were divided in two groups. In the first group of patients there was applied rebamipide therapy (in a single daily dose 300 mg) in combination with the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) — pantoprazole. In the second group there was applied only pantoprazole therapy. For the purpose of specification of AIG pathogenetic mechanisms development, all the examined chronic coronary heart disease cases were tested on the prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) level in blood serum before the therapy beginning and after the treatment. The control group was formed of chronic coronary heart disease patients showing no AIG evidence. Statistical processing of the received data was fulfilled with the program «Statistika 10.0». Results. AIG was registered in 15% out of 340 chronic coronary heart disease patients. According to the endoscopic examination erosive disease of the body and antrum prevailed among the patients. The PGE2 level in the blood serum was significantly lower (р = 0,00087) in these patients in comparison with the control group. In association with PPI and rebamipide mixed therapy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy results showed no pathological findings in gastrointestinal mucosa and statistically significant (р = 0,00067) blood serum PGE2 level growing in all the treated patients. As a result of exclusive PPI therapy there was marked positive dynamics in endoscopic view in 19 out of 25 patients and a tendency to normalization of PGE2 level in the blood serum. However, PGE2 level growing was insignificant. Conclusion. The presented research demonstrates the possibility of AIG treatment with the use of internal endogenous prostaglandins stimulant — rebamipide in complex with proton pump inhibitor PPI therapy.
