The article presents the results of the study, which relates to the efficacy of speech therapy means and methods for the development of speech and non-verbal communication processes for children with autism. A number of researchers' observations show that the range of contact between children with autism is very limited. Mostly these children feel calm and they are relatively manageable only among their extremely close people. The difficulty of selective and original communication contributes to the more isolation of children with autism. The communication difficulties described in the context of not performing early diagnostics work start to be strengthened and deeply rooted in the mental processes of these children. The inability to communicate and the active rejection of any communication contributes to relapsing behaviors whenever there is an attempt to draw any attention and the requirement for a directive ends with a fight. Based on the multi-year pedagogical activity in this field, the author presents experimental studies with autistic children. Taking into account the individual features of each child during the two-year training, we have created different play situations to try to make an interest and expand the range of contacts. Initially, we tried to create about 5-10 similar situations during one speech therapy session, and later, when appropriate skill is well-formed, we try to strengthen it in other situations or in the presence of other strangers.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui proses komunikasi interpersonal orang tua kepada anak autis di Kota Bandung. Untuk menjawab dari tujuan penelitian tersebut, peneliti menetapkan sub fokus pada Komunikasi verbal, komunikasi nonverbal, dan faktor penghambat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan studi deskriptif dimana informan yang terlibat dalam penelitian ini berjumlah lima orang yang terdiri dari empat informan kunci sebagai orang tua dan satu informan pendukung psikolog anak sebagai informan pendukung. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa proses komunikasi interpersonal yang dilakukan antara orang tua dengan anak autis tidak seperti melakukan komunikasi dengan anak normal dan sulit untuk melakukan komunikasi agar dapat dipahami oleh anak autis. Komunikasi verbal yang dilakukan dengan autis harus jelas, tegas, singkat dan juga dengan menggunakan metode gambar, serta adanya kata-kata perintah yang diberikan demi kemandirian anak autis. Komunikasi nonverbal dilakukan dengan gerakan-gerakan ketika orang tua memberikan larangan kepada anak dengan menggunakan gerakan jari telunjuk yang mengacung kemudian digoyangkan, mereka akan segera berhenti melakukan hal tersebut dan memahami bahwa hal tersebut dilarang. Faktor penghambat dalam berkomunikasi dengan anak autis yaitu sulitnya melakukan kontak mata, kurangnya respon yang diberikan, kesulitan berbicara yang dialami anak autis, serta gangguan pada bidang sensori. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This study aims to determine the parent's interpersonal communication process to autistic children in the city of Bandung. To answer the purpose of the study, the researcher established a sub focus on verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and inhibiting factors. This study uses qualitative methods with descriptive studies where the informants involved in this study amounted to five people consisting of four key informants as parents and one informant supporting child psychologists as supporting informants. The results of this study indicate that the process of interpersonal communication carried out between parents and children with autism is not like communicating with normal children and is difficult to communicate so that it can be understood by children with autism. Verbal communication done with autism must be clear, firm, concise and also by using the image method, as well as the words of the commands given for the independence of autistic children. Nonverbal communication is carried out with movements when parents give a prohibition to children by using the movement of the index finger that is raised and then shaken, they will immediately stop doing that and understand that it is prohibited. Inhibiting factors in communicating with children with autism are difficulty in making eye contact, lack of response given, speech difficulties experienced by autistic children, and disturbances in the sensory field.

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.  Autistic is a person affected by autism. The level of autism of each individual is varied. It can range from mild to severe. Due to this condition, the person shares some symptoms of the difficulties with social interaction. To make them involved in social interaction, it needs special effort to make them be able to speech or communicate first. For this reason, there should be the use of the combination between verbal and non-verbal communication. Thus, this study attempted to investigate the process of using both kinds of communication in teaching children with autism since children are easier to be threated than adults. To make the distinct result, the participants were from different level of autism. Then, based on the observation and interview, the findings showed that the verbal and non-verbal communication used by the therapist in teaching the autistic children can enhance their social interaction and communication skills.

Studies related to non-verbal communication in virtual space need to be explored as a result of changes in communication processes that largely rely on online interaction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Undoubtedly, it has extended the scope of understanding an individual’s virtual presence and the effectiveness of non-verbal communication practices. In this study, non-verbal communication is explored in the process of online teaching and learning. Social Presence Theory has been used in understanding the practice of lecturers to establish relationships through their virtual presence and build closeness with students during online teaching and learning. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of ten students of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). This study has found that lecturers can establish relationships and closeness with students through non-verbal communication cues such as kinesic, proxemic, chronemic, and paralinguistic. Lecturers who practice effective non-verbal communication enable a positive effect on students in terms of motivation to learn, focus in learning sessions, create interest in understanding topics, and feel at ease in learning. However, the lecturers' non-verbal communication has had a negative effect if the lecturer is unable to build a good relationship especially in terms of chronemic and facial expressions cues. It will cause students to be unmotivated and experience emotional stress. In conclusion, non-verbal communication is still vital in the process of establishing a social presence and building relationships even online. The practice of non-verbal communication during the individual social presence in virtual space needs to be explored in other contexts such as in organisations. Social communication is the basis of human interaction, as people transmit messages, their emotions, and some symbolic social content through oral or non-verbal communication. However, it is difficult for most children with autism to master, or understand, these non-verbal social communication skills. In recent years, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology (A/VR technology) have been widely used in the social training of children with autism. This technology creates many learning states that are difficult to achieve in the traditional social training of autism, and they are mainly achieved through the sensory advantages of A/VR technology in the visual presentation and simulation of surreal state situations. This technology can provide more attractive interactive games and play strategies to help autistic children learn social reciprocity skills. Therefore, this paper discusses how A/VR technology can be used to construct a surreal visual training strategy in the non-verbal social training of autistic children and, by using different teaching strategies and visual training applications, to help them to improve their mastery of non-verbal social communication. Based on the findings, future researchers are offered some suggestions and references for the application of A/VR technology in the social training of autism.

Autism is still a nightmare for most parents. Parents with autism can be very stressful when dealing with a hyperactive child's behavior, aggressive and passive. Stress experienced by parents of children with autism will affect the ability of parents in the parenting role, especially in relation to coping strategies have in dealing with problems of children. The participation of parents is crucial the success of socializing with children with autism in the general population. This study aims to determine the relationship of coping strategies parents of autistic children and parenting parents. This type of research is an analytic correlation with cross sectional approach. The population in this study were all parents of autistic children in SLB Muhammadiyah Mojokerto numbering 15 people. Samples in this study were all parents of autistic children in SLB Muhammadiyah Mojokerto which totaled 15 people by using total sampling technique. Collecting data using questionnaires. Data analized use cross tabulation, presented in a frequency distribution. On cross-tabulation obtained results tend to use maladaptive coping strategies permissive parenting that is 8 (53.3%), there are also respondents who use adaptive coping strategies using authoritarian parenting as much as one person (16.7%), and adaptive coping strategies tend using democratic parenting style as much as 5 people (33.3%). Expected parents still seeking information to broaden their parents on coping strategies of parents of autistic children and parenting parents as well as parents to give special attention for children with autism to the development and advancement of their lives because they have the same rights as any other normal child.

In this article, we offer a framework for conceptualizing the contribution of discourse analytic approaches to the study of the verbal communication of children with autism, with an emphasis on conversation analysis. We argue that insights from these approaches serve to complexify traditional deficit interpretations of prototypical features of autistic language, such as pronoun atypicality, pragmatic difficulties, and echolalia. Our framework is presented in three parts, each comprising a theoretical premise about language made by discourse analytic approaches and the premise’s methodological corollary. To illustrate, we analyze extracts from three children with autism, pointing to competencies and interactional processes and that are largely invisible in mainstream research. Finally, we describe how these insights offer fruitful suggestions for clinical intervention.

Knowledge is needed for children with special needs to support their quality of life. This is a challenge for prospective educators / prospective teachers. A deeper knowledge is needed to really understand children with special needs. This research is carried out to develop a skill simulator application for autistic child’s prospective educator using Virtual Reality technology. This application will be used as a teaching medium which incorporates motion sensor tools. The sensors will make the virtual application looks realistic. The application was developed using the ADDIE method (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The application development begins with discovering the characteristic of autistic children. This is done to formulate the learning materials. The knowledge base of the autistic children was obtained from the Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB). By using the obtained knowledge, storyboard was designed and implemented. The developed application has been evaluated by 16 prospective child educators with autism and two professional experts. In general, the application can help prospective educators understand the characteristics of children with autism. Moreover, it provides a safe and pleasant teaching skill practice for the prospective educators.

Savouring is an emotion regulation strategy and intervention that focuses on the process of attending, intensifying and prolonging positive experiences and positive affect associated with these memories. Personal savouring involves a reflection on positive memories that are specific to the individual and do not involve others. In contrast, relational savouring entails reflecting on instances when people were responsive to the needs of their significant others. Such interventions hold potential benefits in enhancing positive affect (PA) and reducing negative affect (NA) for both parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and parents of neurotypical children. Adults with greater symptoms of generalised anxiety have been found to have less PA and more NA. However, no study has investigated the effects of a mother’s anxiety symptoms on the efficacy of savouring in enhancing PA and reducing NA. Thus, this paper combined personal and relational savouring to investigate whether savouring may enhance PA and reduce NA of a pooled sample of mothers of neurotypical children and mothers of children with ASD. 52 mothers of neurotypical children and 26 mothers of children with ASD aged 3–7 years old were given a series of questionnaires and randomly assigned to either relational savouring or personal savouring conditions. In relational savouring, mothers were asked to reflect upon a shared positive experience with their child while in the personal savouring condition, a personal positive experience was recalled. Across mothers of children with ASD and neurotypical children, findings suggest that savouring leads to a decrease in NA (p < 0.01) but not increases in PA. Similarly, mothers with higher levels of anxiety experience a greater decrease in NA (p < 0.001) compared to mothers with lower levels of anxiety post-savouring. This study proposes that a brief savouring intervention may be effective among mothers of preschoolers. As lower levels of negative affect is linked to healthier psychological well-being, mothers might be able to engage in more effective and warm parenting after savouring exercises, which would cultivate positive mother-child relationships that benefit their children in the long-term.

Globally, parents and caregivers of children with autism have been particularly impacted by the recent changes due to COVID-19. Reduced access to schools, community supports, and therapeutic services makes parenting more challenging during the pandemic, and especially for parents with children with autism and who are experiencing family breakdown. There remains little guidance to assist coparenting autistic children during COVID-19 after separation and divorce. This brief paper summarizes emerging issues arising in clinical practice to offer recommendations for social work practice.
