Abstrak[English]: Millennial era is always synonymous with the advancement of various lines of technology, including the development of modern telecommunications tools that lead to social media activities. Different groups almost enjoy today’s social media activities without exception. However, the impact of social media activities has led to various aspects of positive progress as well as an effect on harmful elements in the form of mutual ridicule, hoax news, and so forth. Maqashid syari’ah as the final value of the provisions of the Islamic law that carries the amount of protection of personal interests and the public interest is expected to be a response to social media activities today. As a literature-based study and literature review, this paper is expected to be able to contribute ideas and provide a solution to the various negative impacts of social media activities that occur at this time.Abstrak[Indonesia]: Era milenial selalu identik dengan kemajuan berbagai lini teknologi, tidak terkecuali berkembangnya alat telekomunikasi modern yang menimbulkan aktivitas media sosial. Aktivitas media sosial hari ini hampir dinikmati oleh berbagai kalangan tanpa terkecuali. Namun demikian, dampak dari aktivitas media sosial telah menimbulkan berbagai aspek kemajuan yang positif maupun berdampak pada aspek negatif berupa saling mencemooh, berita hoax dan lain sebagainya. Maqashid syari’ah sebagai nilai akhir dari ketentuan hukum Islam yang mengusung nilai perlindungan terhadap kepentingan pribadi dan kepentingan umum diharapkan bisa menjadi sebuah respon atas aktivitas bermedia sosial hari ini. Sebagai kajian berbasis literatur dan kajian pustaka, tulisan ini diharapkan mampu memberikan sumbangan pemikiran dan memberikan sebuah solusi atas berbagai dampak negatif dari aktivitas media sosial yang terjadi saat ini.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan perilaku gotong-royong sebagai katarsis jati diri bangsa yang tengah banyak ditinggalkan. Metode penelitian yang dipakai adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan kajian pustaka sebagai tulang punggung utama pengumpulan data. Saat ini identitas Budaya Kolektif dari bangsa Indonesia mulai luntur. Tren meninggalkan budaya kolektif juga semakin kuat jika melihat tren masyarakat yang mulai abai dengan kepentingan Umum dan lebih mementingkan kepentingan pribadi. Oleh karena itu mengembalikan masyarakat pada Jati Diri dan nilai bangsanya menjadi sangat krusial. Perilaku gotong – royong yang pada jaman dahulu menjadi roh budaya kolektif agaknya dapat ditegakkan lagi. Perilaku gotong – royong merupakan perilaku saling membantu, bentuk solidaritas dan sinergi antar masyarakat. Perilaku ini dapat menjadi strategi meningkatkan kembali nilai – nilai. Kolektivitas yang mulai luntur. Menegakkan kembali perilaku gotong – royong yang pernah menjadi ruh pemersatu bangsa yang dulu pernah ada, akan dapat menjadi katarsis untuk mengembalikan budaya bangsa. Oleh karena itu nilai – nilai dan perilaku gotong royong harus ditegakkan kembali guna mengembalikan Jati Diri Bangsa Indonesia ke arah yang seharusnya. This study aims to describe the behaviour of cooperation as a catharsis of national identity that is being largely abandoned. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with literature review as the main backbone of data collection. Currently, the collective cultural identity of the Indonesian nation is starting to fade. The trend of leaving a collaborative culture is also getting more assertive if you look at the trend in society that is beginning to ignore the public interest and prioritize personal interests. Therefore, returning society to the identity of its nation and the value of its people is very crucial. It seems that the cooperation behaviour, which in ancient times became the spirit of a collective culture, can be reinforced. Cooperation behaviour is the behaviour of mutual help, a form of solidarity and synergy between communities. This behaviour can be a strategy to increase the collectivity values that are starting to wear off. Re-enforcing the cooperation behaviour that was once the unifying spirit of the nation that once existed, will be a catharsis to restore the nation's culture. Therefore, the values and behaviour of cooperation must be re-enforced to return the Indonesian National Identity to the direction it should be.

Abstract. Nowadays the community considers social media as one of the most important things in daily life. For the social media community is a form of self-editing exporters, for example, many anonymous accounts that violate ethics in their use in social media such as accounts to spread hoaxes, build hatred, and are provocative, but on the other hand anonymous accounts have a positive impact if used wisely. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of anonymous accounts for the public from the positive and negative sides of using anonymous accounts. The research method used is descriptive qualitative analysis of anonymous accounts on social media and through interviews from several sources with an analysis of positive and negative impacts. The results showed that an anonymous Twitter account can be a medium to pour out your heart through writing. Twitter can be an entertainment for users through uploading posts, photos and videos.

The Swiss Armed Forces (SAF), as part of a democratic system, depends on legitimacy. Democracy, legitimacy and the public are closely connected. In the public sphere the SAF need to be visible; it is where they are controlled and legitimated by the citizens, as part of a deliberative discussion in which political decisions are communicatively negotiated. Considering this, the meaning of political communication, including the SAF’s communication, becomes obvious as it forms the most important basis for political legitimation processes. Social media provide a new way for the SAF to communicate and interact directly with the population. The SAF’s social media communication potentially brings it closer to the people and engages them in a dialogue. The SAF can become more transparent and social media communication may increase its reputation and legitimacy. To measure the effects of social media communication, a survey of the Swiss internet population was conducted. Based on this data, a structural equation model was defined, the effects of which substantiate the assumption that the SAF benefits from being on social media in terms of broadening its reach and increasing legitimacy values.

This study aims to describe the effect of sanctions (individual sanctions, collective sanctions, and absence of sanctions) on cooperative behavior of individuals with medium trust in the context of corruption. Both collective sanctions and individual sanctions, are systemic, which means sanctioning behavior is exercised not by each individual but by the system. Cooperative behavior in this context means choosing to obey rules, to reject acts of corruption and to prioritize public interests rather than the personal interests. Conversely, corruption is an uncooperative behavior to the rules, and ignores the public interest and prioritizes personal interests. Research subjects were 62 students. The Chi-Square Analysis was used to see the association between the variables and the logistic regression model was applied to describe the structure of this association. Individual sanction is recommended as punishment to medium trust individuals to promote cooperative behavior in the context of corruption. The results showed that individuals with medium trust had more cooperative behavior.

This paper seeks to understand why there has been an increase in photographic images exposing military violence or displaying bodies killed by military forces and how they can freely circulate in the public without being censored or kept hidden. In other words, it aims to analyze this particular issue as a symptom of the emergence of new wars and a new regime of their visual representation. Within this framework, it attempts to relate two kinds of literature that are namely the history of war and war photography with the bridge of theoretical discussions on the real, its photographic representation, power, and violence.  Rather than systematic empirical analysis, the paper is based on a theoretical attempt which is reflected on some socio-political observations in the Middle East where there has been ongoing wars or new wars. The core discussion of the paper is supported by a brief analysis of some illustrative photographic images that are served through the social media under the circumstances of war for instance in Turkey between Turkish military troops and the Kurdish militants. The paper concludes that in line with the process of dissolution/transformation of the old nation-state formations and globalization, the mechanism and mode of power have also transformed to the extent that it resulted in the emergence of new wars. This is one dynamic that we need to recognize in relation to the above-mentioned question, the other is the impact of social media in not only delivering but also receiving war photographies. Today these changes have led the emergence of new machinery of power in which the old modern visual/photographic techniques of representing wars without human beings, torture, and violence through censorship began to be employed alongside medieval power techniques of a visual exhibition of tortures and violence.

The normative perspective of this chapter is how to guarantee respect for the fundamental values of freedom of expression and journalistic reporting on matters of public interest in cases where a (public) person claims protection of his or her right to reputation. First it explains why there is an increasing number and expanding potential of conflicts between the right to freedom of expression and media freedom (Article 10 ECHR), on the one hand, and the right of privacy and the right to protection of reputation (Article 8 ECHR), on the other. In addressing and analysing the European Court’s balancing approach in this domain, the characteristics and the impact of the seminal 2012 Grand Chamber judgment in Axel Springer AG v. Germany (no. 1) are identified and explained. On the basis of the analysis of the Court’s subsequent jurisprudence in defamation cases it evaluates whether this case law preserves the public watchdog-function of media, investigative journalism and NGOs reporting on matters of public interest, but tarnishing the reputation of public figures.

We experimentally test whether expert organizations on social media can correct misperceptions of the scientific consensus on the safety of genetically modified (GM) food for human consumption, as well as what role social media cues, in the form of “likes,” play in that process. We find expert organizations highlighting scientific consensus on GM food safety reduces consensus misperceptions among the public, leading to lower GM misperceptions and boosting related consumption behaviors in line with the gateway belief model. Expert organizations’ credibility may increase as a result of correction, but popularity cues do not seem to affect misperceptions or credibility.

Limited attention has been directed towards understanding the impact of social media in the public sector, particularly in local government organisations. Although social media offer substantial benefits and opportunities to local government, research into the impact of social media remains scant. To address this gap, the authors draw on the technology, organisation, and environment (TOE) framework and propose a model of the determinants of social media impact in local government. The model is tested with data collected via a survey with 173 Australian local government organisations using social media. Data were analysed using the partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique. The results indicate that TOE factors including perceived benefits, perceived security risks, compatibility, and degree of formalisation are important predictors of social media impact in local government.

The study analyzed selected issues related to the scope of human rights and freedoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland and Russia. The author wanted to compare the regulations issued by a Member State of the European Union and a country outside the European Union, often using undemocratic methods of exercising power. The work focuses on research problems related to the principles of protection, the confrontation of individual interests with the public interest, and the impact of the regimes introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic on human rights law in both countries. The thesis of the study is that in the event of a threat to public health, analogous restrictions on human rights are introduced both in an undemocratic country and in a country belonging to international structures identifying with democratic values. The state of the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed, and in some area even contributed to the creation of mechanisms reserved for crisis situations, posing a direct and real threat to public safety and health.

PurposeTwitter is gaining popularity as a microblogging and social networking service to discuss various social issues. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic and is discussed worldwide. Social media is an instant platform to deliberate various dimensions of COVID-19. The purpose of the study is to explore and analyze the public sentiments related to COVID-19 vaccines across the Twitter messages (positive, neutral, and negative) and the impact tweets make across digital social circles.Design/methodology/approachTo fetch the vaccine-related posts, a manual examination of randomly selected 500 tweets was carried out to identify the popular hashtags relevant to the vaccine conversation. It was found that the hashtags “covid19vaccine” and “coronavirusvaccine” were the two popular hashtags used to discuss the communications related to COVID-19 vaccines. 23,575 global tweets available in public domain were retrieved through “Twitter Application Programming Interface” (API), using “Orange Software”, an open-source machine learning, data visualization and data mining toolkit. The study was confined to the tweets posted in English language only. The default data cleaning and preprocessing techniques available in the “Orange Software” were applied to the dataset, which include “transformation”, “tokenization” and “filtering”. The “Valence Aware Dictionary for sEntiment Reasoning” (VADER) tool was used for classification of tweets to determine the tweet sentiments (positive, neutral and negative) as well as the degree of sentiments (compound score also known as sentiment score). To assess the influence/impact of tweets account wise (verified and unverified) and sentiment wise (positive, neutral, and negative), the retweets and likes, which offer a sort of reward or acknowledgment of tweets, were used.FindingsA gradual decline in the number of tweets over the time is observed. Majority (11,205; 47.52%) of tweets express positive sentiments, followed by neutral (7,948; 33.71%) and negative sentiments (4,422; 18.75%), respectively. The study also signifies a substantial difference between the impact of tweets tweeted by verified and unverified users. The tweets related to verified users have a higher impact both in terms of retweets (65.91%) and likes (84.62%) compared to the tweets tweeted by unverified users. Tweets expressing positive sentiments have the highest impact both in terms of likes (mean = 10.48) and retweets (mean = 3.07) compared to those that express neutral or negative sentiments.Research limitations/implicationsThe main limitation of the study is that the sentiments of the people expressed over one single social platform, that is, Twitter have been studied which cannot generalize the global public perceptions. There can be a variation in the results when the datasets from other social media platforms will be studied.Practical implicationsThe study will help to know the people's sentiments and beliefs toward the COVID-19 vaccines. Sentiments that people hold about the COVID-19 vaccines are studied, which will help health policymakers understand the polarity (positive, negative, and neutral) of the tweets and thus see the public reaction and reflect the types of information people are exposed to about vaccines. The study can aid the health sectors to intensify positive messages and eliminate negative messages for an enhanced vaccination uptake. The research can also help design more operative vaccine-advocating communication by customizing messages using the obtained knowledge from the sentiments and opinions about the vaccines.Originality/valueThe paper focuses on an essential aspect of COVID-19 vaccines and how people express themselves (positively, neutrally and negatively) on Twitter.
