Abstract The literature of the Eastern March is strictly local. A collection of several dozen German-language novels and stories from the circle of ‘Ostmarkenliteratur’ (literature of the Eastern March), which on a scale unknown before and afterwards sends the reader back to this specific region, shows how important the Poznań Province had become on the verge of the 19th century. Geographical and topographic information in the creative output of writers constitute its ‘verbal map’. Inspired by Barbara Piatti’s interpretative approach, I will attempt to answer key questions regarding the circumstances and conditions that are conductive to locating the plot of literary works in specific spaces and places, and to interpret the experience of space recorded in the literature of the Eastern March by means of this map.

This subject was formerly taught in the fourth year of the Degree in Translation and lnterpre ting at the Univers-ity of Cordoba. The contents analysed are fragments of literary works in German language translated into Spanish by tudents in the course of the ongoing assessment process. Thc tests comprise two different gerues: drama and novel. The purpose is first to identify the gaps in students' performance regarding language and translation competences, in order to take corrective measures in the classroom. The second purpose is to establish a grading system to be consistently applied in the evaluation of tests. Thirdly, this analysis aims at providing feedback for syllabus planning of this subject in the B.A. Translation and Interpreting of the University of Cordoba. As to the findings, the main language gaps identilied include mainly the lack of mastery of grammar structures and literary features of the corresponding works. Similarly, the need for a flexible grading system was detected in order to assess the impact of a given error on each translation. Fragments or terms that are considered particularly complex should be given extra points when properly translated.

With the help of key questions on intercultural orientation the main components of teaching materials are analyzed and their role in the development of intercultural communicative competence in the foreign language lessons are found out.

The paper focuses on the phenomenon of “women’s writing”, a discussion about which began in the 1970s. Based on Elaine Showalter’s concept of “doubled-voiced discourse” as well as on Franco Moretti’s theory of literary forms development from the center to the periphery, which generates unstable compromises in the structure, its “cracks” and gaps, the article offers an interpretation of “women’s writing” as an area of increased conflict. The case study of three literary works of the late XIX – early XX century written in German language – Elsa Asenijeff’ essay “Women’s Riot and the Third Sex” (1898), Lou Andreas-Salomé’s novella “Fenitchka” (1898) and Minna Wettstein-Adelt’s novel “Are These Women? A Novel about the Third Sex” (1901) – demonstrates conflicts of discourses, genres and narrative strategies unfolding in these texts. The paper suggests the idea that such structural “cracks” and contradictions mark the departure from the boundaries and limits of contemporary patriarchal discourses and the dominant literary system.

Identity, place, and a sense of belonging to a specific region are factors which have shaped most twentieth and twenty-first century nature writing throughout Europe. This article argues that German-language nature writing is, however, a special case. Due to the appropriation of the aforementioned concepts in the Nazis’ Blood and Soil doctrine, relations to a national landscape have become problematic for most post-Shoah generation writers. Born into a nation for which belonging and Heimat once were used as a means to justify the genocide of non-Aryan groups, access to an innocent, identificatory approach to nature is cut off. It is therefore no coincidence that both W.G. Sebald in The Alps in the Sea and Peter Handke in Lesson of Montagne Sainte-Victoire turn towards foreign landscape. Instead of pondering upon a specific German or Austrian region they belong to, they describe walks through Corsica and France. By linking their experience of these surroundings to other regions, to history and art, they create a truly European panorama and establish an aesthetics of transient dwelling. The form of the literary essay for which digressions, lengthy contemplations and sudden changes of discourse are typical enables them to combine a set of different perspectives on nature. Besides, the essay’s meandering form matches their struggle with an identity rooted in a specific soil. And still, a sense of loss, represented in the guise of an expulsion metanarrative, pervades.   Resumen Identidad, lugar y el sentimiento de pertenencia a una región específica son factores que han caracterizado la mayor  parte de la escritura de la naturaleza de los siglos XX y XXI en toda Europa. Este artículo razona que la escritura de la naturaleza en lengua alemana es no obstante un caso especial. A causa de la apropiación de los conceptos anteriormente mencionados por parte de los nazis en su doctrina de Sangre y Suelo, las relaciones con el paisaje nacional se volvieron problemáticas para la mayoría de la generación post-Shoah de escritores. Siendo natural de una nación que antes utilizaba conceptos como pertenencia y Heimat para justificar el genocidio de grupos no-arios, ya no existen posiciones inocentes e identificatorias hacia la naturaleza. Por eso no es casualidad que tanto W.G. Sebald en Los Alpes en el mar y Peter Handke en La doctrina del Sainte-Victoire se centren en paisajes extranjeros. En vez de ocuparse de una región específica de Alemania o Austria, a las que pertenecen, describen excursiones por Córcega y Francia. Asociando sus experiencias en esta naturaleza con otras regiones, con la historia y el arte, establecen un panorama verdaderamente europeo y crean una estética de pertenencia temporal. La forma del ensayo literario en el que las digresiones, las contemplaciones extensas y los cambios discursivos súbitos son típicos, les permite combinar una serie de perspectivas distintitas sobre la naturaleza. Además, las divagaciones del ensayo se corresponden con las dificultades de los autores a la hora de luchan con una identidad enraizada en un suelo especifico. Y aun así se difunde un sentido de perdida, representado en forma de  metanarración de expulsión.

Several techniques have been reported in the past to prepare cross(x)-sectional TEM specimen. These methods are applicable when the sample surface is uniform. Examples of samples having uniform surfaces are ion implanted samples, thin films deposited on substrates and epilayers grown on substrates. Once device structures are fabricated on the surfaces of appropriate materials these surfaces will no longer remain uniform. For samples with uniform surfaces it does not matter which part of the surface region remains in the thin sections of the x-sectional TEM specimen since it is similar everywhere. However, in order to study a specific region of a device employing x-sectional TEM, one has to make sure that the desired region is thinned. In the present work a simple way to obtain thin sections of desired device region is described.

Abstract. The individual attitudes of every single team member are important for team performance. Studies show that each team member’s collective orientation – that is, propensity to work in a collective manner in team settings – enhances the team’s interdependent teamwork. In the German-speaking countries, there was previously no instrument to measure collective orientation. So, I developed and validated a German-language instrument to measure collective orientation. In three studies (N = 1028), I tested the validity of the instrument in terms of its internal structure and relationships with other variables. The results confirm the reliability and validity of the instrument. The instrument also predicts team performance in terms of interdependent teamwork. I discuss differences in established individual variables in team research and the role of collective orientation in teams. In future research, the instrument can be applied to diagnose teamwork deficiencies and evaluate interventions for developing team members’ collective orientation.

Abstract. Background: The It Gets Better project aims to help prevent suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) adolescents. It features personal video narratives portraying how life gets better when struggling with adversities. Research on the contents of messages is scarce. Aims: We aimed to explore the content of videos in the Austrian It Gets Better project regarding the representation of various LGBTIQ+ groups and selected content characteristics. Method: A content analysis of all German-language videos was conducted ( N = 192). Messages related to coming out, stressors experienced, suicidal ideation/behavior, and on how things get better were coded. Results: Representation was strong for gay men ( n = 45; 41.7%). Coming out to others was mainly positively framed ( n = 31; 46.3%) and seen as a tool to make things better ( n = 27; 37.5%). Social support ( n = 42; 62.7%) and self-acceptance ( n = 37; 55.2%) were prevalent topics. Common stressors included a conservative setting ( n = 18, 26.9%), and fear of outing ( n = 17; 25.4%). Suicidality ( n = 9; 4.7%) and options to get professional help ( n = 7; 8.2%) were rarely addressed. Limitations: Only aspects explicitly brought up in the videos were codeable. Conclusion: Videos do not fully represent gender identities and sexual orientations. Messaging on suicidality and professional help require strengthening to tailor them better for suicide prevention.

Exemplary for other than English-language psychology journals, the impact of recent Anglicization of five former German-language psychology journals on (1) authorship (nationality, i.e., native language, and number of authors, i.e., single or multiple authorships), (2) formal characteristics of the journal (number of articles per volume and length of articles), and (3) number of citations of the articles in other journal articles, the language of the citing publications, and the impact factors (IF) is analyzed. Scientometric data on these variables are gathered for all articles published in the four years before anglicizing and in the four years after anglicizing the same journal. Results reveal rather quick changes: Citations per year since original articles’ publication increase significantly, and the IF of the journals go up markedly. Frequencies of citing in German-language journals decrease, citing in English-language journals increase significantly after the Anglicization of former German-language psychology journals, and there is a general trend of increasing citations in other languages as well. Side effects of anglicizing former German-language psychology journals include the publication of shorter papers, their availability to a more international authorship, and a slight, but significant increase in multiple authorships.
