Abstract The purpose of this study was to find out whether the selection of practical subjects in schools was still a gendered phenomenon. The motivators were findings of an investigation on business imitations in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, which revealed that men and women still participated in gender based entrepreneurial activities. A qualitative approach, which utilised the case study design was adopted for this study. Self-administered open-ended questionnaires were used as data collection instruments. The sample comprised 5 Heads of Departments, 15 practical subject educators and 75 students from 2 purposively selected co-educational schools in the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province. Data were analysed according to research questions. Findings showed that there were attempts to break the gender barriers as some girls were now studying subjects that were previously male dominated and some boys had enrolled for subjects that were in the past the preserve of girls. The study concluded that there was a gradual paradigm shift in the mind-sets of school authorities, learners and some parents. Recommendations were that school authorities should continue to intensify campaigns on de-constructing the learners’ gender stereo typed mind-sets and engage various stakeholders in the change process to enable learners to comfortably fit in a globally competitive environment.

The study was a case study design aimed at determining the causes and levels of truancy among secondary school students, using Rivers State, Nigeria. The research sample consisted of 105 teachers and was purposefully sampled. Four research questions and one hypothesis were posed, formulated and tested respectively. A structured questionnaire was developed, validated and administered to the respondents selected for the study. T-test, standard deviation and mean were used to analyze the data collected. The results indicated that there is a significant difference between family background and student factor. The implication of this is that the student’s family background contributes greatly to the student’s level of truancy. Hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made towards the reducing the level of truancy among secondary school students. Key words: Nigeria, Rivers State, school, secondary school, students, truancy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present an innovative agile methodology that proposes fundamental changes in managing the development of in-house information systems in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and benchmarks it with one of two database technologies enabling these systems to be both efficient and competitive. Design/methodology/approach The objectives are achieved by presenting an elaborated design of the agile methodology that manages the system development process by addressing three basic components: roles played by system players, process needed to fulfill the system development, and artifacts to document the project. A case study is conducted as a proof of the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and measures whether the selection of the database technology affects the effectiveness of the system development process. Findings Results show that, compared with traditional methodologies, the proposed methodology reduced the cost of system development and testing by 30 percent and enhanced the IT – business alliance. Further, this work found that the selection of a suitable database technology is strongly related to the complexity and interrelationships between the data used. Originality/value Such research did not receive the needed attention (Hunter, 2004) even in the past decade. Successful adoption of IT by companies could be in the form of customized IS which could be expensive for SMEs to adopt due to a lack in technical expertise and financial resources. The proposed methodology has the potential to promote sustainable development through helping SMEs in reducing the time and cost of IT project development.

Abstract. Media neuroscience has emerged as a new area of study at the intersection of media psychology and cognitive neuroscience. In previous work, we have addressed this trend from a methodological perspective. In this paper, we outline the progression of scholarship in systematic investigations of mass communication phenomena over the past century, from behaviorism and environmental determinism to biological and evolutionary paradigms. These new paradigms are grounded in an emergentist perspective on the nature of psychological processes. We discuss what it means to ask valid research questions in media neuroscience studies and provide recent examples in the areas of interpersonal and intergroup processes, morality, and narratives as well as in persuasion and health communication. We conclude with a selection of innovative methodological avenues that have the potential to accelerate the integration of cognitive neuroscience into media psychology research.

The improvement of teaching quality in Science subjects is closely connected to the implementation of reforms initiated in education policy resolutions in the school practice. It is crucial for teachers to implement the paradigm shift from transmitting information to 21st century learning design. It means to change not only teaching strategies but also their views what teaching is. Lesson observations were the main source to answer the research questions: What do lesson observations reveal about the students’ learning in science lessons according to criteria selected? What information lesson observation gives about teachers’ skills to organize learning according to changes envisaged in education policy resolutions? Key words: case study, lesson observation, science teaching and learning.

AbstractThe flood disaster that struck the Province of South Sulawesi (South Sulawesi) at the end of January 2019, was the worst natural disaster in the past 20 (twenty) years. Of the 24 (twenty four) districts and cities in South Sulawesi, there are 6 (six) districts and cities experiencing very poor conditions, namely the Regencies of Jeneponto, Maros, Gowa, Takalar, Barru and Makassar. As a result of this disaster, tens of thousands of families lost their homes, property was destroyed, social facilities such as schools and houses of worship were also severely damaged and some were destroyed. Even more pathetic, because more than a hundred people died. This results from an imbalance of ecosystems causing serious problems. Community understanding of the need to maintain ecosystem balance is still very low coupled with the socioeconomic situation which makes the community more pragmatic. The problem is, how do you increase the awareness of the community in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem? And how to foster disaster-conscious attitudes and behavior for the community, especially in disaster-prone areas? Therefore, the writing of this article aims to comprehensively examine people's attitudes related to maintaining ecosystem balance and fostering disaster-conscious behavior in the community, especially in disaster-prone areas as an alternative to disaster risk management. The method used is qualitative with the type of case study studies. The selection of informants is done purposively and the data processed are primary and secondary. From the results of this study it was found, the increasingly severe environmental damage became the main trigger of natural disasters that occurred in South Sulawesi at the end of January 2019. This environmental damage, is dominant because of the very exploitative behavior of the community towards the environment. For example, what happened in Gowa district, the big floods that occurred because around the Jeneberang River and Bili-Bili Dam areas - sand mining activities have been going on for decades. Likewise, the Mount Bawakaraeng area, which used to function as a buffer against flooding, has long been deforested as a result of causing landslides whenever there is heavy rain. This condition also occurs in the districts of Jeneponto, Maros and others - these areas are vulnerable to heavy rainfall. To overcome this serious problem, one alternative is to form community groups that are aware of disasters. This strategy of forming disaster awareness groups, by combining approaches from above (government) and from below (the community)   Musibah banjir yang melanda Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan (Sulsel) di akhir Januari 2019, merupakan bencana alam yang terparah selama kurun waktu 20 (dua puluh) tahun terakhir ini.

Over the past decades, there have been significant changes in the structure of adult morbidity. Clinicians are increasingly faced with the problems of combined pathology and development of comorbidity, as well as to solve the issues of rational tactics of management of such patients. Polypragmasia due to comorbidity leads to a sharp increase in the probability of developing systemic and undesirable effects of drugs, while prolonged use of several drugs can lead to the development of complications that develop into independent nosological forms, which is especially important in older age groups. The most common forms of comorbidity in the elderly are in one or another combination of the following diseases: hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, diseases of the musculoskeletal system. It is known that the leading place in the relief of pain in the latter is occupied by non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the use of which can be prolonged and induce the development of serious gastrotoxic reactions. Well studied and described NSAIDs-induced gastropathy, which, in most cases, is asymptomatic even in the presence of erosive and ulcerative changes. However, NSAIDs may be associated with the emergence of various dyspeptic complaints and lesions of the esophagus, which can be viewed in the framework of NSAID-associated esophageal, especially relevant in older patients. The article deals with the problem of comorbidity, polypragmasia, therapeutic tactics in the management of comorbid patients with NSAIDsesophagogastropathy and the possibility of prescribing for the prevention and treatment of not only effective, but also safe means of correction of these clinical and endoscopic manifestations.

The purpose of this pilot case study was to answer the following research questions: How do previous experiences affect students' attitudes toward online teamwork? When do students' attitudes toward online teamwork first develop and why? Using a social constructivist framework, a qualitative case study design was utilized to conduct an online open-ended survey and online focus group in one online Organizational Leadership 300-level course. Findings revealed that students' attitudes toward online teamwork are in part predicated upon previous online team experiences. Students identified a number of challenges with online teamwork, many of which related to personality issues, slackers or members who do not contribute his or her share of the work, and poor communication. Generally, students' attitudes and perceptions toward online teamwork began in college after their first online team experience. In order for online teamwork to be effective, instructors may consider designing team projects that include methods to ensure both team and individual accountability, promote team cohesiveness, and foster frequent communication among team members.

Building on the range of methods available to the roaming sociological imagination, curating sociology is concerned with instituting ‘live’ public encounters. Contending that there are practices in the history of sociology that can be considered instances of curating sociology, this article makes a case for harnessing these to inventive research processes today. The discussion in this article draws attention to recent developments in curating before excavating a selection of practices within sociology upon which we can reflexively build live methods with consideration to creative collaborations, publicness and exhibiting as research. Each of these involves a degree of mutation within the craft of sociology. By way of illustration, the final section of the article explores an in-depth case study of curating sociology for the Noise of the Past project, which involved us, as sociologists, collaborating with creative practitioners and ‘curating’ a large-scale public event.
