Although the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) supervised all of the television programs, there are a lot of programs getting a warning because of breaking the rule of P Broadcasting Code of Conduct (P3) and Broadcasting Program Standard (SPS). Focusing on program Pagi-Pagi Pasti Happy, this research investigated the authority of KPI in terms of being a watchdog of television content in Indonesia. This research deployed political economy theory because it has studied not only media analysis in general but also the problems faced by the media industry and who controlled media. To criticize the authority of KPI in maintaining a code of conduct over the broadcasting content, three KPI’s commissioners, two television program representatives, and a media observer were interviewed. Based on interviews, the researcher found that dialogue preferred by KPI in supervising the television content confirmed that the current KPI’s commissioner has compromised with private television stations. KPI is more likely to support the existing television business system nowadays to gain maximum profit for the media investor. The findings suggest that role as KPI’s commissioner has been used to gain more power in the future.

This study analyzed some cases of rapid weight loss procedures in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and athletes linked to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), currently the largest promoter of the sport. Therefore, printed sources were used, such as specialized magazines or not; documentaries, television programs, interviews, articles on websites; documentary sources, regulations and protocols. It was noted that the rapid weight loss represents overconformity deviances, which are part of a code of conduct valued by athletes, but sometimes become problematic. The cases listed here obtained relative repercussions in the media and resulted in acute damage to the athletes, financial and marketing damage to the event promoter. There was also a certain malpractice among athletes and teams, event organizers, and the North-American Athletic Commissions to try to prevent extreme procedures for rapid weight loss from occurring more often by putting athletes at risk, causing damage to the event itself.

Analysis, Measuring, and Control in the Process of Media Digital Transformation: Media Analysis Tool (MAT) The digital transformation of the media industry feeds today on abundant and excellent theory built on the concept of convergence more than two decades ago, but on very little procedure or methodology for its analysis, measurement and control as a process. Lessons learned from the failed process of digital transformation of the press industry (convergence) open the door to alternative investigative approaches if the best techniques and methodologies utilized in other industries (with resounding success) are used and applied wisely in ours. With the development of MAT (Media Analysis Tool), a free online collaborative platform (Open Innovation) is proposed for the collection, exploitation of data and reporting on demand (dashboards and visualization) available for any media platform (print, radio, and TV). The main goal is to offer an accurate measurement of the level of maturity regarding the process of digital transformation and the potential for change in the media organization. This is an improvement over the efforts of Spanish researchers to calculate the convergence index of a medium based on variables of collaboration, versatility, distribution, and the relationship between newsrooms and on the contributions of Moreno and Fruin (2009) with NAT —Newspaper Analysis Tool— which serve as a theoretical and methodological foundation successfully tested in newspapers to propose the functional design of the MAT (Media Analysis Tool) platform.   Palabras clave: transformación digital, gestión del cambio, reingeniería de procesos, innovación abierta, convergencia de medios. Key words: digital transformation, change management, business process reengineering, open innovation, media convergence.

This study examined the value of ethnopolitics during media reporting of the 2017 electoral process in Kenya. The study relied on the political economy of media theory by Vincent Mosco the propaganda theory by Herman and Chomsky and the theory of agenda-setting by McCombs and Shaw. The study used descriptive research design with the population of the study drawn from Nakuru Town Sub-County. Our research relied on observation schedules to obtain data from the televised political analyses shows and propaganda political videos clip. Interview schedules were used for media practitioners (editors, reporters and media sellers) and politicians (MPs and MCAs), while unstructured questionnaires were used for the media consumers (audience). All qualitative data were processed and analysed using the critical interpretative approach, while the quantitative data were presented descriptively in tables, graphs, charts and percentages generated using SPSS software. The study findings indicated that during the 2017 electoral process in Kenya, political players used ethnopolitics to capture extensive media coverage. Similarly, there was a direct influence of ethnopolitics and ethnopolitical journalism on the media consumer knowledge and ethnopolitics normalisation. The study recommends that media, being the most influential cultural institution and player in the political economy, self-regulates to minimise ethnopolitics dissemination. The output of this study adds to the existing knowledge in communication and media studies and the political economy of mass media. The findings should be able to inform policy formulation among the mass media industry and media regulatory bodies in Kenya. Keywords: ethnicity, ethnopolitics, ethnopolitical oligarchy, political economy of communication

Approaches to the critique of the political economy of communication in society belong to the “forgotten theories” in media and communication studies. But in view of the unmistakable structural change of a media industry “unleashed” by deregulation, privatisation, digitalisation, concentration, globalisation, etc., it seems from an academic perspective necessary to analyse the development of the media industry in close connection with the equally unmistakable general development of an “unleashed” capitalism. This article therefore shows that the analysis of the development processes of capitalism as the undoubtedly globally dominant economic and social system from a political economy perspective makes it possible to analyse, explain, and partly forecast the economisation or commercialisation process in the media industry in an academically appropriate way with regard to its causes, forms, consequences, and further development. Theoretical explanations are offered by the further developments of the analysis and critique of contemporary capitalism based on Marx’s critique of the political economy as a historical-materialist analysis of society. In doing so, the permanent fundamental characteristics, modes of functioning and “regularities” of the capitalist mode of production and the capitalist formation of society are analysed in connection with the particularities of the current capitalisation process in the media industry.

This study examines the infrastructural features of the media industry in Turkey in the 2000s. The study posits that the analysis of the inner workings of the media as an industrial-social institution is a way of understanding how the media is related with the overall system it is a part of. In order to do that, it is crucial to undertake the infrastructural mapping of the media. In this study, the dimensions of the media industry such as the branches of economic activity, geographical distribution, corporate structures and scales, employment, wages, gender distribution, and unionization levels are discussed as the basic indicators forming the infrastructure of the media industry. The datasets which the study is based on are taken from the NACE codes, which are used in the statistical classification of economic activities in Europe and are also valid for Turkey. The boundaries of media industry are defined through six basic branches of economic activity classified in NACE 18, 58, 59, 60, 63,73 codes and these fields of activity are discussed both by themselves and as a relational whole.

This article reviews the attempt to study the notion of alternativity in various fields of knowledge. This generalization is necessary for classifying alternativity as a phenomenon. This will give researchers further boost in the studies of alternative media. The research of alternative media has been carried out for more than 5 years by the Academy of Media Industry and the media department of HSE University in Moscow. Alternativity is understood by the author as the necessity of choice between several ways that sometimes contradict one another. The author reviews philosophic concepts and elements of alternativity in modern science. Special attention is paid to the issues of alternativity in history, linguistics and natural science. During the analysis the focus is held on the works by J.Habermas and other researchers that viewed the opportunity to create communicative rationale through the elements of various opposing theories which is important for the media analysis. This aims to trace models and principles that could be useful to analyze modern alternative media in online environment. After the analysis of alternative components from various fields of science the author determines key factors that influence the formation of the personal alternative behavior. Here are some of them: the choice to differentiate between correct and false statements, acquiring its own experience through reasoning, the desire for a constant interaction with the people in various forms on various topics, the use of the successful innovations from various scientific concepts, the use of elements that change personal behavior, the desire to relax and seek freedom in alternative virtual word, the necessity to look for new knowledge, facts, figures in the ever-changing environment. Keywords; alternativity, alternative media, metaphysics, eclecticism, audience, individual, linguistics, communication

The goal of this article is to explain long term restructurations and transformations of the media industry. In order to do so, the article uses theory elements of a critique of the political economy of the media. The paper is a contribution to the development of theoretical approaches that provide a theoretical analysis of the media in capitalism based on Karl Marx’s concepts. The capitalist mode of production is the primary driving force of media corporations‘ strategic action and of the media economy’s structural transformations. Factors that are of particular relevance in such structural transformations include profit orientation, capital accumulation, capitalist crises, state policies, behaviour of producers and consumers, private property, class relations, the antagonism between productive forces and relations of production, the antagonism of variable and constant capitalism, the antagonism of use-value and exchange-value, and competition. Competition, capital’s need to survive, and capitalism’s immanent crisis potentials force corporations try to create innovations such as new digital technologies. Informatisation, which includes the use of the computer as universal machine and the Internet, is the provisionally latest stage in the development of the productive forces that has affected media technologies and the media industry. The capital-driven structural digital transformation of the media industry has resulted in the convergence of production, distribution and consumption, the creation of a variety of non-tangible digital products, digital rationalisation and automation, and the universal real subsumption of labour under capital. These developments have also created the potential potentials for overcoming the capitalist character of the media economy and advancing decommodification based on the emergence of a universal digital media system.

<p>Within the new landscape of political communications characterized by infotainment in prime time television programs, this article analyzes the presence of four political representatives in <em>El Hormiguero</em> to explore if their appearances reinforce gender stereotypes. The analysis of the television programs reveals a substantial progress in the elimination of gender stereotypes which the media traditionally convey and reproduce in political campaigns. The analysis reveals a practical elimination of gendered bias in the interviews; the sexist tone remains, however, in other spaces of the television program linked to humor and entertainment practices.</p>
