Abstract. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is micronutrient that is water soluble and indispensable for the body's metabolism, also plays a role in immune function. Vitamin C are easy to be absorbed actively. One of the fruits that contain vitamin C is melon fruit. Many varieties of melon fruit affect the vitamin C levels. The levels of vitamin C can be determined by 2,6-dichloroindophenol titration method using 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution. The advantages of the 2,6-dichloroindophenol titration method in the determination of vitamin C levels is reductor substances other than vitamin C are not oxidized by 2,6-dichloroindophenol. The examination begins with the determination of equivalence of 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution to vitamin C and followed by determination of vitamin C levels in several varieties of melon fruit. Equivalence of 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution to vitamin C was obtained 0,1347 mg vitamin C per 1 mL 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution. Levels of vitamin C in various varieties of melon fruit obtained that the highest levels was in Golden Melon variety (9,209 mg vitamin C per 100 g of Golden Melon) while the lowest levels was in Langkawi Melon variety (0,335 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of Langkawi Melon). It can be concluded that vitamin C levels contained in melon fruit vary and depend on melon fruit varieties. Keywords: Vitamin C, Ascorbic Acid, Melon Fruits, Varieties, Titration MethodREFERENCE S. Ascorbic acid mostly comes from vegetables and fruits, especially fresh fruits. Vitamin C is a vitamin that can be formed by several types of plants. One of them is papaya which has various contents including vitamin C that can increase endurance, help skin rejuvenation and repair body tissues. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of vitamin C contained in papaya using iodimetry and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The sample used in this study was papaya fruit. Determination of vitamin C levels in papaya samples using the titration method bas done by adding sample filtrate with starch indicator then titrated with titrant I2 until the endpoint color of blue titration is formed. Other hands, the determination of vitamin C levels in papaya samples using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method bas conducted by making an ascorbic acid calibration curve then the filtrated sample was added with H2SO4 5% and ammonium molybdate reagent, then the absorbance of the sample was measured at 494 nm wavelength. The results of the determination of vitamin C levels using the iodimetry was 0.0147% and the results of the determination of vitamin C levels using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method was 0.1313%. In conclusion, vitamin C levels analyzed by using UV-Vis spectrophotometry methods were greater than vitamin C levels analyzed by using the iodimetry method.

Water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method using citric acid as the carbon source and ethylenediamine as the nitrogen source. The repeated and scale-up synthetic experiments were carried out to explore the feasibility of macroscopic preparation of CDs. The CDs/Fe3+ composite was prepared by the interaction of the CDs solution and Fe3+ solution. The optical properties, pH dependence and stability behavior of CDs or the CDs/Fe3+ composite were studied by ultraviolet spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Following the principles of fluorescence quenching after the addition of Fe3+ and then the fluorescence recovery after the addition of asorbic acid, the fluorescence intensity of the carbon dots was measured at λex = 360 nm, λem = 460 nm. The content of ascorbic acid was calculated by quantitative analysis of the changing fluorescence intensity. The CDs/Fe3+ composite was applied to the determination of different active molecules, and it was found that the composite had specific recognition of ascorbic acid and showed an excellent linear relationship in 5.0–350.0 μmol·L−1. Moreover, the detection limit was 3.11 μmol·L−1. Satisfactory results were achieved when the method was applied to the ascorbic acid determination in jujube fruit. The fluorescent carbon dots composites prepared in this study may have broad application prospects in a rapid, sensitive and trace determination of ascorbic acid content during food processing.

This research was aimed at investigating the concentration of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) in some commercial fruits juices: ‘5’ Alive, Hollandia yoghurt, Nutri milk, Ribena, Lacasera, Happy hour, Viju milk, Chi exotic and Chi vita sold in Ugbokolo, Benue State, Nigeria by titrimetric method using 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol (DCPIP) as titrant. The ascorbic acid (AA) content in milligram per 100ml of the various juices investigated is in the order: ‘5’ Alive (11.25) > Ribena (5.47) > nutri milk (5.31) > Happy hour (4.38) > Hollandia yoghurt (1.25) > Lacasera (0.47) ≈ Chi exotic (0.47) >Viju milk (0.31) > Chi vita (0.16). It was observed that half a litre of ‘5’ Alive (56.25 mg AA) a day is suitable for adults and pregnant women, a liter each of Ribena  (54.70 mg AA) and Nutri milk (53.10 mg AA) per day for adults, while a litre of Happy hour (43.80 mg AA) per day is suitable for adolescents. It can be concluded that commercial fruits juices when taken in large amount will add to the daily human dietary intake of the vitamin.

Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin provided with strong antioxidant action, that fulfills an important immune protective role of the body against infections and prevents various cancers appearance. The main goal of this study was to exactly quantify pure ascorbic acid in tablets of two pharmaceuticals. Proposed objective consisted in improvement and application of a iodometric titration method in ascorbic acid quantitative analysis. Ascorbic acid content per tablet in both studied pharmaceuticals was 173.84 mg, very close to official stated amount of active substance (180 mg). Allowed percentage deviation from declared content of pure ascorbic acid was only 3.42 %, below maximum value of 5 % imposed by Romanian Pharmacopoeia 10-th Edition, according to European and International standards. Statistical analysis confirmed experimental obtained results and revealed low Standard Error value SE = 0.214476, which has fallen within normal limits. Confidence Level value (95.0 %) = 0.551328 and Standard Deviation SD = 0.525357. were within normal range of values. Relative Standard Deviation (Coefficient of variation or homogeneity) RSD = 26.268% was found below maximum range of accepted values (30-35%). P value = 7.44. 10-6 was located within normal limits, P [ 0.001, so the experimental obtained results has shown highest statistical significance. Thus, studied titration method can be successfully used in quantitative analysis of ascorbic acid from different samples.

The article presents data on the study of the effect of foliar water-soluble mineral fertilizer NOVATEK Solub K-Max 10-5-30 on the biochemical composition and commercial quality of apple fruits. A rise in vitamin C from the introduction of NOVATEK at a rate of 2.5 kg/ha indicates the effectiveness of this drug for optimizing the content of ascorbic acid in fruits. An increase in the content of monosaccharides and a decrease in disaccharides were found for all the studied rates of consumption of agrochemicals. The use of mineral fertilizer “Novatek Solub K-Max” contributed to increase the dry weight of fruits. The application of this mineral fertilizer is recommended for inclusion in the industry regulations for Apple cultivation as one of the elements of the technology.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are physiologically involved in functions like sperm maturation, capacitation and acrosome reaction, but their excess is involved in male infertility. Antioxidants in seminal plasma (SP) are an important factor balancing physiologic and harmful ROS activities. In this study, we determined and compared the full profiles of the water- and fat-soluble antioxidants in SP and serum of 15 healthy fertile subjects (ranging between the ages of 35 and 42 years). Ejaculates were obtained after 2–5 days of sexual abstinence. After liquefaction and withdrawal of an aliquot for the sperm count, samples were centrifuged to obtain SP. Thirty min after semen donation, a venous blood sample was collected from each subject. Donors with lower SP concentrations of ascorbic acid (n = 5) or α-tocopherol (n = 5) received a 4 week oral administration of either vitamin C (100 mg/day) or vitamin E (30 mg/day). They were then re-assayed to determine the SP and serum levels of ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol. SP and serum samples were properly processed and analyzed by HPLC methods suitable to determine water (ascorbic acid, glutathione (GSH) and uric acid) and fat-soluble (all-trans-retinoic acid, all-trans-retinol, α-tocopherol, carotenoids and coenzyme Q10) antioxidants. Data demonstrate that only ascorbic acid is higher in SP than in serum (SP/serum ratio = 4.97 ± 0.88). The other water-soluble antioxidants are equally distributed in the two fluids (GSH SP/serum ratio = 1.14 ± 0.34; uric acid SP/serum ratio = 0.82 ± 0.12). All fat-soluble antioxidants are about 10 times less concentrated in SP than in serum. In donors treated with vitamin C or vitamin E, ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol significantly increased in both fluids. However, the SP/serum ratio of ascorbic acid was 4.15 ± 0.45 before and 3.27 ± 0.39 after treatment, whilst those of α-tocopherol were 0.11 ± 0.03 before and 0.10 ± 0.02 after treatment. The results of this study, by showing the peculiar composition in water- and fat-soluble antioxidants SP, indicate that it is likely that still-unknown mechanisms allow ascorbic acid accumulation in SP against a concentration gradient. SP mainly relies its defenses on water- rather than fat-soluble antioxidants and on the mechanisms ensuring their transfer from serum.
