Despite the work of Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson (1989), the concept of relevance has not enjoyed the popularity it deserved among translators as it appears to be more productive in information science and sociology than in translation studies. The theory of relevance provides underpinnings of a unified account of translation proposed by Ernst-August Gutt. However, if the concept of relevance should take into account all parameters of legal translation, the approach should be pragmatic and not cognitive: The aim of a relevant translation is to produce a legal text in the target language which appears relevant to the lawyer in the target legal system, namely a text that can be used in the same way as the original source text. The legal translator works as a facilitator from one legal system into another and relevance is the core of this pragmatic approach which requires translation techniques like adaptation rather than through-translation or calque (in the terminology of Delisle/Lee-Jahnk/Cormier 1999). This contribution tries to show that relevance theory, which was developed in the field of sociology by Alfred Schütz, could also be applied to translation theory with the aim of producing a correct translation in a concrete situation. Some examples extracted from one year of the practice of an expert law translator (German-French) at the Court of Appeal in the Alsace region illustrate our claim and underpin an approach of legal translation and its heuristics that is both pragmatic and reflexive.

The current study aimed to find out the translation techniques applied by the translator in creating the Indonesian subtitles for the original lyrics of Shelter – a collaboration project of music video by Porter Robinson and Madeon, A1-Pictures and Crunchyroll uploaded on YouTube in 2016. The data were analyzed based on the audiovisual translation theory, especially the linguistics of subtitling, the translation technical procedures in the compared stylistics, and the choice in song translation. The study also applied qualitative approach which enabled the researchers to emerge data in descriptive way (in the form of words or pictures instead of numbers). Furthermore, the data were also in the forms of an audiovisual content. The study indicated that most of the lyrics were translated based on literal translation that was reflected by the equivalence of the source language and the target language. The audiovisual theory, particularly reduction theory was also applied in creating the subtitles. In addition, the subtitles were created without taking the music into consideration, meaning that the subtitles were devoted as a supplement or no more than another piece of the source text.

This research aimed to find out the used translation’s techniques and the acceptability of the translation. This was a descriptive qualitative research and an embedded-case study. Based on semantic and relevance theory, the researcher determined good translation. This research was conducted by listing the religious terms found in The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Islam. Then, the researchers compared the source language and target language to identify the translation techniques. Finally, the researchers and raters assessed the acceptability of the translation by conducting Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The result shows that the translator uses established equivalent, borrowing, literal, particularization, generalization, transposition, reduction, addition, explication, and discursive creation. Besides, the average rate for the acceptability of the translation is 2,8 out of 3. It means that the translation is mostly in accordance with the norm and rule of language in the target text.

Translation activities and studies from one language to another must be carried out to understand the thoughts, ideas, culture, and knowledge of other nations who have different styles. Put translation activities can be divided into two types, namely oral translation or what is often referred to as oral translation and written translation, whereas translation studies are divided into two types, namely descriptive translation studies and translation theory studies. In the field of descriptive translation studies have two objects, namely the work of translation and the process of translation. Translation activities certainly require translation techniques or styles. Translation techniques are procedures or procedures for analyzing and classifying translation equivalents from source languages to target languages and can be used in a variety of lingual units. In translation activities, the use of techniques used by translators is not an important thing. The most important thing for a translator is the technique chosen can fulfill the purpose of the translation. Among the objectives of the translation, activity as a communication tool that connects the writer in the source language with the reader in the target language, and the translator as the mediator or the liaison of both.

This paper aims to seek the category of religious terms in The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Understanding Islam (written by Emerick Yahiya), the translation’s techniques which are used to translate them, and the accuracy of the translation in Memahami Islam. The translation was done by Tim Penerjemah Pusat Bahasa dan Budaya Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah. This research is a descriptive qualitative research and an embedded-case study. It was conducted by categorizing the religious terms which exist in the book. Based on the relevance theory, the researcher determined how a proper translation should be. Then, the researcher compared the source language and target language in order to identify the translation techniques. Finally, the researcher assessed the accuracy of the translation based on the translation techniques. The result shows that there are fourteen categories of religious terms in the book, namely eschatology, moral and ethical criteria, religious artifacts, religious constructions, religious events, religious groups, religious personages, religious sites, specialized religious activities, supernatural beings, terms of revelation, religious ceremonies, religious histories, and religious activities. In addition, the translator uses established equivalent, borrowing, literal, particularization, generalization, transposition, reduction, addition, explicitation and discursive creation techniques. In addition, the average score for the accuracy of the translation is 2,8.

Legal translation is the transferring the meaning from source language text into target language which not only consists of language system but also legal system. This research aims to analyze the translation techniques used by the Indonesian sworn translators in translating legal texts from English into Indonesian. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Data obtained through content analysis on translations of the Indonesian sworn translators containing Certificate of Live Birth, Certificate of Marriage, Principles Statement of Terms and Conditions. The result of the research reveals: a) single translation technique dominates the translation technique in translating legal and law scientific texts from English into Indonesian obtains (66,67%) data consisting of 10 variants (literal, amplification, recognized, reduction, borrowing, modulation, transposition, adaptation, colque, and description); b) couplet translation technique (32,%) data consisting of 16 variants (literal and borrowing, literal and recognized equivalent, literal and reduction, literal and adaptation, literal and amplification, literal and transposition, literal and modulation, literal and colque, borrowing and amplification, literal and description, borrowing and modulation, borrowing and adaptation, borrowing and transposition, modulation and colque, reduction and colque, and reduction and adaptation), and triplet translation technique (1,19%) data consisting of 4 variants (literal + borrowing + modulation, literal + amplification + transposition, literal + amplification + borrowing, and literal + transposition + reduction). Researcher concludes that translation technique of legal texts from English into Indonesian conducted by Indonesian sworn translators contains three kinds of translation techniques, i.e. single translation technique, couplet translation technique, and triplet translation technique with 30 variants

As a consequence of the still increasing transnational commercial and scholarly cooperation and exchange, more and more often legal information has to be translated. Sometimes the content of legal documents (contracts, statutory provisions, books and articles on legal topics and so on) has to be translated into another language. But even more frequently, information on rules from one legal system has to be provided in the legal language of another legal system. In both cases the translator or the lawyer involved is confronted with difficulties of legal translation. In both cases bilingual legal dictionaries could play an important role in the translating process by providing translation suggestions and information on the linguistic context of terms in the target language, such as specific noun-verb combinations, or typical collocations.

Abstract: The legal systems, even if they may belong to the same branche of law, as is the case in France and Spain, are specific in each country and, therefore, different from the rest of the legal systems of other countries. This results in translation to a cultural anisomorphism. The translator must be aware of this in order not to fall into translation errors that will make it impossible for the reader to understand the text in the target language. It is important to know that, in legal translation, one cultural reality is not translated by another, but that the cultural reality of the source language must be expressed in the target language. This is presented as a challenge for the translator, who must have extensive cultural knowledge of both countries and an adequate documentation capacity. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the importance of cultural knowledge in translation and, more specifically, in legal translation through the analysis of a series of terms that come from the legal-criminal branch. In this analysis, we will find the explanation of the concept of the source language, the context, the proposal (or translation proposals), the translation technique we have used, as well as comments in which we explain their translation problems and their cultural anisomorphism. Keywords: cultural anisomorphism, cultural realities, translation techniques, legal translation, criminal terminology.
