What teaching materials are relevant to develop reading skills of my students? Can every Internet resource or course book be used in all classrooms? Should materials meet national standards of a particular country? Teachers usually face the reality while selecting resources to use in their teaching. Teaching materials are an indispensible tool in the majority of language classrooms. This paper gives an overview of reading materials and the selection of authentic materials for designing reading tasks in the English as a foreign language classroom in Uzbekistan. It also seeks theories that support the efforts in developing culturally and locally appropriate EFL reading materials. This article proposes a method of using authentic materials in teaching students a foreign language. The main criteria for the selection of authentic materials in accordance with the purpose and objectives of learning are identified, and the advantages of their use for the development of reading skills in comparison with adapted texts and an increase in the level of motivation for learning a foreign language are analyzed. English learners often say that reading, which is a vital part of language learning, is boring and difficult. This problematic situation may be the result of improper EFL reading practice.

Reading means different things to different people; for some it is recognizing written words, while for others, it is an opportunity to teach pronunciation and practice speaking. However, reading always has a purpose. It is something that we do everyday; it is an integral part of our daily lives, taken very much for granted and generally assumed to be something that everyone can do. The reason for reading depends very much on the purpose for reading. Among aspects which prove positive when using authentic materials is that they are highly motivating, giving a sense of achievement when understood and encourage further reading. One of the main reasons for using authentic materials in the classroom is once outside the controlled language learning environment, the learner will not encounter the artificial language of the classroom but the real world and language the way it is really used (Berardo, 2006). Keywords: Authenticity; Foreign language (L2) learning; Reading comprehension; Reading materials

Abstract

To write a good thesis, students must have good reading skills. In the Japanese Language learner case, he/she will be required to be able to read not only textbooks or other written sources in Indonesian language and English, but also materials in Japanese. But, to Japanese language learners that come from non-kanji countries, reading authentic materials such as books, news papers, documents, etc., is not easy (more especially for intermediate level learners). The focus of this study is the mutual activity that occurs and the use of prior knowledge on group reading. The outcome of this research is that students are able to grasp authentic reading content in Japanese that is in a level that is beyond their actual ability level. By reading in groups, students can one another use resources that they each have so that their understanding towards the reading content is deeper. By using the mother language, students are easily able to raise and use their prior knowledge to understand reading materials, can ask questions towards one another, express opinions and freely have a debate.

Foreign language teaching for professional communication in an agrarian university is carried out on the basis of one of two approaches: a) foreign language for specific purposes and b) content and language integrated learning. The purpose of foreign language teaching within the framework of a foreign language for specific purposes is the mastering of professional vocabulary by students and teaching translation of a professional orientation text. Content and language inte-grated learning aims at a) the development of students’ foreign language communicative compe-tence in the professional sphere of communication and b) teaching a profile discipline in a foreign language. Depending on the choice of a methodic approach to teaching, the content and methods of teaching, the requirements for teaching materials and the competence of the teacher of a foreign language will change. Based on the analysis and generalization of the experience of the Voronezh State Agrarian University named after Emperor Peter the Great, the main problems associated with foreign language teaching for professional purposes in an agrarian university are considered. We identify four such problems: 1) different levels of students’ proficiency in a foreign language; 2) teaching materials in a foreign language for professional communication are developed on the basis of a foreign language for special purposes; 3) the selection of the subject content of teaching is not carried out taking into account the intradisciplinary specialization of students of a specific training profile; 4) a foreign language teacher is not always competent in the field of the students’ profile specialty. We discuss each problem in detail and offer possible solutions.

The study attempted to design reading materials for Medical Science at one of Vocational High Schools Medical Science in Serang. To produce satisfactory teaching materials, the researchers did the following steps: doing needs analysis, reviewing the principles of materials design and reading in a foreign language, designing course framework, designing syllabus, designing the reading materials, and implementing the sample lessons. The researchers employed qualitative methods in gathering the data. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was addressed to students, alumni, teachers and institution. The interview was collected from the companies or users that have ever recruited the graduated students. The needs analysis was carried out by distributing questionnaires. The results were then analyzed. The result of needs analysis, became the basis for the researchers to design course framework. The course framework was then developed into a syllabus. Finally the syllabus became the basis for designing reading materials. The reading materials for Vocational High School Husada Pratama applied a topical syllabus. Each lesson or unit had different topics, greeting and introduction. Introduction about nurse, health, dioalogue conversation nurse and patient, eat healthy food, profile a nurse, tools, disease, nutrition, the healthy diet pyramid. Over past few decades, research on authentic materials has been focused on helping teachers provide their learners teaching materials. Most of the researches in this area explore the benefits and drawbacks of authentic materials utilization in the classroom. This multiple case study aims at investigating benefits of and barriers in using authentic materials presented as a digital media used in their EFL classrooms. Document and an interview were employed to reveal the teachers perception. The findings indicate although it was considered difficult to find and organize, digitized authentic materials helped teachers in teaching English as a Foreign Language for learners with various levels and backgrounds. Its use could help teachers motivate and promote their students interest in learning. However, disselection and misuse of it might not meet students needs and interest in learning. Good teachers capacity in finding and using the digitized authentic materials could encourage better learning process and students better learning achievement. Therefore, it is recommended that for the further study, learners perception also need to be explored.
