Every individual faces lot of hurdles in there day to day life, whether working, non-working or even those who are studying. The only factor that sets apart a winner from the others is how they respond to the situation that presents itself in front of them. Disability is considered to be a major problem in today’s scenario and is also one major responsibility for those who have or are the care givers for those who have any kind of disability. Quality of life is the Individuals satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) with the cultural or intellectual conditions under which they live. Quality of life not only consists of self satisfaction but also consists of two other factors as well, parenting and Family Adjustment and Psychological Distress. It is very important and a study also proves that involvement of a parent with their child is considered important when it comes to relationship between them and other family members. It helps in understanding the child well and also the similarities and dissimilarities between each other which helps in resolving various parenting and family issues. The study was done on 80 mothers, 40 working and 40 non-working mothers of differentially disabled children. The age group of mothers varied from 30 – 50 years. And for Children it was 5 – 10 years, which was studied using 3 different questionnaires. The study conducted shows that there is significant different between quality of life of Working and non-working mothers of differentially abled children, there is a significant Difference in psychological distress of working and non-working mothers of differentially abled children and it also reveals that there is no significant difference between parenting and Family adjustment of working and non-working mothers of differentially abled children.

IntroductionStudies have found that the cognitive function levels of intellectually challenged children add a burden to the family and affect quality of life.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine the family burden felt by mothers of children, ages 6–16, whose mental capacity evaluation indicates an IQ of 35–79 to explore the mother's quality of life and discover the factors that yield an impact in this context.AimsThe main objective of this study therefore was to ascertain the family burden and quality of life experienced by the parents of children with mentally retarded or borderline mental capacity.MethodsThe WISC-R test was used in the research to determine the intellectual capacity of children, 6–16 years of age. The sample comprised 131 children and adolescents between the ages 6–16 with IQs in the interval of 35–79 and their mothers. The parents accompanying their children were assessed using the Family Burden Assessment Scale, the World Health Organization Quality of Life instrument and a sociodemographic questionnaire that was filled out during face-to-face interviews.ResultsThe quality of life of the mothers was found to be average. At the same time, as the IQ level of the children went up, the less the mothers felt they were under a family burden. It was seen that the mothers experienced the most difficulty in the domains of “perception of inadequacy” and “emotional burden.”ConclusionMothers with intellectually disabled children need psychosocial support. Providing all members of the family with counseling services to help them cope with the issues and responsibilities involved in the care of disabled children may make a significant difference in quality of life.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his/her declaration of competing interest.

Background: Thalassemia is the most common autosomal abnormality in Syria. Its complications have an important effect on education; time off school; sport; difference from friends/ siblings; social interactions; and stigmatization. Knowledge of factors associated with quality of life in thalassemia patients is necessary for forming appropriate clinical programs, social support, and improving treatment outcomes. Purpose: The study was to assess the effects of Patients' and Care-givers' Knowledge, Attitude, & Practice (KAP) with Quality of Life among Thalassemia Major Patients' in Syria. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive analytical design was conducted at the national thalassemia center in Damascus. WHOQOL-BREF and a questionnaire developed by the researcher were used to measure the participants’ knowledge, attitudes and practices of thalassemia. Results: Total of 238 thalassemia patients participated in the study. A statistical significance was found regarding improvement of skill and knowledge scores among caregivers and thalassemia patients before and after receiving the teaching guide from 12.52±1.77 to 14.07±1.01, t=11.447, p=0.000 and from 34.12±4.50 to 37.43±4.61, t=-8.58, p= .000 respectively. Stigmatization was significantly noticed among families caring for thalassemic patients. There were a significant differences in the mean score regarding nutritional status before and after teaching guide paired t test= 12.11, p= 0.000. A statistical significance was found in females regarding social domain p=0.04. However, mean scores for overall quality of life were better in females rather than males, but these mean scores were statistically insignificant p>0.05. A statistical significant difference in ferritin levels and patient’s age was found. Results also revealed that no statistical significant differences was observed between overall quality of life of the four domains in relation to the two treatment groups (subcutaneous vs oral) and age groups. Conclusion: Thalassemia is a socio-economic problem. The most efficient way to reduce risks of having affected patients is by increasing the knowledge through training of parents regarding the disease. Our findings highlighted that there was lack in patients’ knowledge and skills regarding the disease, but a remarkable improvement in both knowledge and performance was found after patients received the teaching guide, which lead to an increase in overall patient's quality of life.

Abstract Objectives This study was conducted to evaluate the association of dietary diversity score with health-related quality of life and osteosarcopenic obesity in female aged 50 or older using data from the 2008∼2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods In this cross-sectional study, a total of 4276 subjects (50∼64y: n = 2279, ≥65y: n = 1997) were classified according to dietary diversity score (DDS) (≥3 DDS, <3 DDS) using 24 h dietary recalls method. Body composition was evaluated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and health-related quality of life was assessed using EQ-5D (EuroQol five-dimension) index. Analysis was conducted by age-stratified groups: 50∼64 (≥3 DDS = 2070, <3 DDS = 209) and 65 (≥3 DDS = 1534, <3 DDS = 463) yrs or older. Results The ≥3 DDS group had a larger proportion of subjects who were highly educated compared to <3 DDS group (P < 0.001). In the 65 yrs or older age group, age-adjusted means of EQ-5D index of ≥3 DDS group and <3 DDS group were 0.84 and 0.74, respectively and there was significant difference (P < 0.0001). However, in the 50∼64 yrs age group, no difference was observed in EQ-5D index according to the dietary diversity. The ≥3 DDS group had a larger proportion of subjects who had no osteosarcopenic obesity compared to <3 DDS group (P < 0.05). Conclusions These results suggest that the dietary diversity may be associated with a lower health-related quality of life and osteosarcopenic obesity in Korean female aged 50 years or older. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychosocial distress and quality of life (QOL) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiotherapy. Fifty-three patients with an initial diagnosis of NPC were enrolled in this study. The psychological Distress Thermometer (DT) and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Head & Neck (FACT-H&N) were conducted before and after radiotherapy in NPC patients. We compared the differences in psychological distress and QOL before and after radiotherapy and analyzed the correlation between psychological distress and QOL after radiotherapy. The performance on the DT was 6.60 ± 1.42 and 2.81 ± 1.43 before and after chemotherapy, respectively, with a significant difference between the time points (t = -13.73,P< 0.01). The performance on the FACT-H&N was 68.30 ± 6.14 and 39.84 ± 6.14 before and after chemotherapy, respectively, with a significant difference between the time points (t = -19.9,P< 0.01). There was a significant negative correlation between the DT score and the FACT-H&N score (r = -3.64,P< 0.01). Patients with NPC experience different degrees of psychological distress, an important factor that affects quality of life, after radiotherapy.

Objective: To study the relationship and impact of post traumatic growth and psychological distress on qualityof life among renal failure patients seeking dialysis, and to see differences in these variables among different age group patients. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, Government Hospital Mardan Pakistan, fromJan to Jun 2019. Methodology: A sample of 300 renal failure Patients 18 years or older who had a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease receiving treatment within different dialysis units were approached through purposive sampling technique. Post traumatic growth inventory Quality of life scale and the Psychological distress scale were used to measure the study variables. Results: Results reveal that psychological distress has a negative correlation with post traumatic growth (r=-0.77**, p<0.01) and Quality of Life (r= -0.73**, p<.01). Whereas, Post Traumatic Growth has a strong positive correlation with Quality of Life (r=0.68*, p<0.01). Similarly, Psychological distress (β= -0.89, p<.000) and post traumatic growth (β=0.25, p<.000) significantly predict quality of life and explained 57% variance (F (2,297) = 198.4, p<0.000, R2=0.57) among the sample. Moreover, the results also show significant differences in the study variables between the two age groups (i.e., 16 to 32 years and 33 to 48 years) and it further suggest that middle age patients had higher levels of PTG as compared to younger and older patients. Conclusion: This study reveals a significant negative relationship of post traumatic growth with psychologicaldistress and a significant effect of post traumatic growth and psychological distress on the quality of life in thesample. This study also concludes that middle-age group patients had higher levels of post traumatic growth ascompared to young and old patients.

Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition characterized by complete/partial obstruction of the upper airway that disrupts normal sleep pattern. It has become highly prevalent and negatively affects the quality of life. Reports show ≥4% of men and ≥2% of women, and mostly, the obese individuals are affected by OSA. OSA is independently associated with an increased likelihood of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diminished quality of life. Hence, it becomes a prime concern for health-care personnel to diagnose it at earliest. A screening tool is necessary to stratify patients based on their clinical symptoms, their physical examinations, and their risk factors. Thus, this study was taken up to assess the prevalence of OSA using the STOP-Bang questionnaire. Methods: A total number of 1012 participants were selected using random sampling technique from various community health camps for the study. The participants were asked to fill in the STOP-Bang questionnaire. All questionnaire respondents were precisely briefed about this study in a face-to-face interview. Data obtained from the survey were subjected to statistics, and descriptive analysis was done. Results: The prevalence of OSA was found to be 13.7% by using the Stop Bang questionnaire. It was found that the prevalence of OSA was highest in the age group of 50–59 (21.7%) and least in the age group of 18–29 (12.0%). Gender-wise distribution of OSA based on the scoring was seen to be more, among males (14.8%) and females showed a prevalence of 12.9%.Conclusion: This study concludes that the STOP-Bang method of screening showed a prevalence of 13.7%. However, the prevalence of OSA did not show any significant difference in various age groups; it was found that males had a higher prevalence of OSA compared to females.

Purpose. To determine the changes in vision-related quality of life and psychological distress after cataract surgery in monocular patients and to compared these with a control group of age- and gender-matched binocular patients. Methods. We enrolled 40 monocular patients and 40 binocular patients who underwent cataract surgery from August 2017 to December 2018. All participants undertook eye examinations and answered questionnaires (the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire, Self-rating Anxiety Scale, and Self-rating Depression Scale) before and after cataract surgery. Result. The monocular patients had significantly worse mean CDVA than the binocular patients before and after surgery. However, there was no significant difference between the increases gained by the two groups. Mean composite VFQ-25 scores of the monocular group were significantly lower than those of the binocular group before and after surgery, but the improvement experienced by the monocular group was statistically larger than the binocular group (37.20 ± 12.84 vs. 19.11 ± 5.13, P < 0.001 ). Mean standard SAS scores of monocular patients were significantly higher than those of binocular controls before and after surgery, while monocular patients experienced a significant greater decline of SAS scores (−9.41 ± 5.39 VS −3.84 ± 1.61, P < 0.001 ). Mean standard SDS scores of the monocular group were significantly higher than those of the control group before and after surgery, but the monocular group experienced a significantly greater decline of SDS scores following cataract surgery (−11.91 ± 6.38 VS −4.78 ± 1.79, P < 0.001 ). There was a significant correlation between the preoperative logMAR CDVA and both the postoperative logMAR CDVA (r = 0.63, P < 0.001 ) and the changes in the logMAR CDVA (r = −0.881, P < 0.001 ) for monocular patients. Linear regression analyses suggested that higher postoperative VFQ-25 scores had significant associations with better preoperative CDVA and the absence of systemic comorbidity (both P < 0.05 ). Age and ocular comorbidity were significantly associated with postoperative SAS scores (both P < 0.05 ). Age and systemic comorbidity remained significant impact factors for SDS scores (both P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. Monocular patients reported greater improvement in vision-related quality of life and greater decline in the level of anxiety and depression than binocular control subjects, despite having similar CDVA gains after cataract surgery. We argue that it is not a better choice for monocular patients to delay cataract surgery until the cataract is very advanced. A clear understanding of the impact of cataract surgery on vision-related quality of life and psychological distress in monocular patients is needed by ophthalmologists when making surgery decision.
