Abstract Background Good oral health (OH) is essential for physical, social, mental health, and overall quality of life. This study assessed the usefulness of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) in changing oral health-related behaviors among school children aged 11–13 years in Saveh, Iran. Methods In this descriptive before and after study, participants were sixth-grade students at single sex primary schools in Saveh city, Iran. We recruited 356 school children in 2019. Using simple random sampling, a male and a female school per district were allocated to the experimental group and the remaining schools to the control group. Our planned oral health education consisted of four one-hour training sessions over 1 week. The first session familiarized the participants with important information about OH. In the second session, we applied a brain storming exercise to identify the benefits and barriers to flossing and brushing. In the third session, a short film about correct brushing and dental flossing technique was shown and research team also used role-playing to correct any mistakes. In the final session students were taught about the importance and the application of OH planning and given forms to help plan for brushing. Results Participants for the study included 356 students (180 in the experimental group and 176 in the control group) who completed the post-test questionnaire. The mean age ± standard deviation was 11.55 years ±0.93 in the experimental group and 11.58 years ±1.01 in the control group. After the intervention, the paired t-test indicated a significant difference between the mean and standard deviation of the action plan and coping plan constructs in the experimental group before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). Covariance analysis indicated a significant difference between scores of intervention and control groups under statistical control of post-test in two groups (covariate) after a peer-led education program (post-test) (p < 0.05). Conclusion A shortage of professional health workers in education settings together with the ease, usefulness and low-cost of this peer-led method, suggest further steps should be taken to implement it more widely to improve and enhance primary school aged students’ oral health behavior.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a bioenergy economy-based program on the intensity of symptoms and quality of life among patients with myofascial pain syndrome. To collect the data, a simple random sampling was used among the women patients with MPS referred from a neurological clinic in Mashhad. Fifteen patients were collected as an experimental group. The method consisted of a quasiexperimental method with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-ups in two and six months after the program. Data collection main materials included the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) and WHO Quality of Life -BREF Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). Moreover, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to increase the quality of the research. The group underwent six sessions of bioenergy economy-based program. Data collected were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) to reach the aim of the study. The mean score of pain intensity and depression had a significant difference in the post-test and the two follow-ups with the pre-test. The mean score of the anxiety had a significant difference in the pre-test and post-test but not in the follow-ups. The mean score of quality of life did not have a significant difference in the pre-test, post-test, and follow-ups even in the sub-scales, but the mean score of the post-test and the follow-ups were higher than the pre-test. Bioenergy economy-based program caused a significant decrease in the pain intensity, depression, and anxiety in women patients with MPS and remained consistent in the two and six month’s follow-ups. Even in the quality of life, there was an improvement after the program, and although the fluctuation in the score, the mean score after six months was lower than before the program. To conclude, a bioenergy economy-based program can be an effective program in lowering the pain, depression, and anxiety and improving the quality of life in women patients with myofascial pain syndrome, and this remains consistent in the following six months. © 2019 Tehran University of Medical Sciences. This study aims to investigate whether the use of six selected short stories throughout the duration of a 14-week course could enhance students’ reading comprehension achievement at the end of the semester. Out of the six short stories read, three were chosen as in-class assignments known as ‘Personal Reading Logs’ (hereafter, PRLs). One group of semester two Diploma students taking a reading skills course was selected through a convenience sampling method. A pre-test was conducted by having the students answer a past semester reading quiz of which the results would then be compared to their post-test (final reading exam) results. A paired samples t-test revealed no significant difference in the reading scores of the pre-test and the post-test, t (17) = -.265, p > .05. Since the p-value was bigger than 0.05, this indicated that the mean reading score of the post-test (M = 50.556) was not significantly higher than the mean reading score of the pre-test (M = 49.722). Therefore, the null hypothesis which stated that there was no difference in the mean score of the pre-test and post-test was retained. Overall, the result refuted the findings of other studies promoting the effectiveness of using short stories to enhance L2 reading comprehension achievement.

Bullying is common among school students, and some victims hold self-blaming attributions, exhibit low self-esteem, and do not seek social support. A wait-list control pre-/post-test experimental design, with random allocation, was used to assess the effects of a novel cross-age teaching of social issues (CATS) intervention on the latter 3 variables among peer-identified victims of bullying (N = 41, mean age = 14.5 years). In small cooperative groups of classmates, participants designed and delivered a lesson to younger students that informed them that bullies not victims are in the wrong, victims have no reason to feel bad about themselves, and that seeking help can be beneficial. CATS led to a significant improvement on all 3 dependent variables with mostly large effect sizes; these positive effects were even stronger with a bigger dose of intervention (6 hr vs. 4 hr), and changes in self-blame, and separately changes in self-esteem, mediated the positive effect of the intervention on help-seeking. The theoretical and practical implications of these results were discussed, especially in terms of supporting a highly vulnerable subgroup of adolescents.
