Glass ionomer cements and resin-based composites are promising materials in restorative dentistry. However, their limited mechanical properties and the risk of bulk/marginal fracture compromise their lifespan. Intensive research has been conducted to understand and develop new materials that can mimic the functional behavior of the oral cavity. Nanotechnological approaches have emerged to treat oral infections and become a part of scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Carbon nanotubes are promising materials to create multifunctional platforms for dental applications. This review provides a comprehensive survey of and information on the status of this state-of-the-art technology and describes the development of glass ionomers reinforced with carbon nanotubes possessing improved mechanical properties. The applications of carbon nanotubes in drug delivery and tissue engineering for healing infections and lesions of the oral cavity are also described. The review concludes with a summary of the current status and presents a vision of future applications of carbon nanotubes in the practice of dentistry.

Aim. To evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation measures for dental caries. Methods. Studied were 246 patients aged 18-50 years (146 women and 100 men) who received dental treatment for dental caries and its complications, the duration of follow-up was 18 months. Conducted was an expert evaluation of 246 medical records of dental patients and patients’ management. The hygienic status of the oral cavity was assessed by the criteria of OHI-S (Oral Hygiene Index Simplified) and PHP (Patient Hygiene Performance), for values of OHI-S (PHP) 0.6±0.1 (0.4±0.03) the status was considered good, for values 1.3±0.1 (0.7±0.02) - satisfactory, for values 2.6±0.1 (1.8±0.04) - unsatisfactory. Results. Good oral hygiene status was noted in 64 patients (first group), satisfactory - in 88 (second group), unsatisfactory - in 94 patients (third group). In the third group, the share of fully intact restorations and fillings during middle and deep caries after 6 months was 89 and 81%, at 12 months - 80 and 78.2%, after 18 months - 79.7 and 71.8%, respectively; in the second group after 6 months - 94 and 92.8%, after 12 months - 89 and 85.3%, after 18 months - 87.5 and 81.2%, respectively; in the first group at 6 months - 96 and 96%, after 12 months - 96 and 91.3%, after 18 months - 94.5 and 90.5%, respectively. Only 152 of the 246 patients fulfilled all the recommendations and prescriptions, 34 (13.8%) did not complete the rehabilitation of the oral cavity. Prevention and rehabilitation activities were performed in 30% of cases: in 15% - in full, in the remaining 15% primarily professional oral cleaning and remineralization therapy was conducted. Conclusion. The program of rehabilitation of dental patients should include regular inspections, monitoring of the oral hygiene, professional cleaning of the oral cavity, grinding and polishing of the restorations and fillings, pathogenetic therapy.

Effect of Herbal Toothpaste Application Method on Production of Volatile Sulfur Compound. Volatile sulfur compound (VSC) is a component of the gas produced by bacteria in the oral cavity, consisting of hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide. This gas is often used as an indicator to assess the status of bad breath. Herbalbased dental paste has been reported in previous studies to inhibit the growth of germs that cause periodontal disease. Plaque Bacteria in the oral cavity can be reduced by tooth brushing and/or the use of antiseptic material. Two groups of subjects chosen were given treatment using herbal toothpaste in different ways: the first group was by brushing teeth with herbal toothpaste the way they usually do it and the second group was given the treatment by applying herbal paste in the left and right molar region of maxilla. The sampling was performed before treatment, 5 minutes and 2 hours after brushing teeth or applying herbal paste. The result of the experiment indicates that the use of herbal toothpaste with toothbrush and applying method has the same pattern on each component of the sulfur gas that is an increase after five minutes post-application and then a decrease after 2 hours post-application. Herbal toothpaste which is applied by means of brushing or by applying to the teeth affected the levels of VSC components; the level of Hydrogen sulfide decreased, the level of methyl mercaptan was relatively stable, and the level of dimethyl sulfide increased. Herbal toothpaste can be used in a common brushing way or by applying it to the teeth to reduce the levels of VSC gases, especially Hydrogen sulfide in normal subjects.

Generalized periodontitis is the most common form of periodontal pathology, especially in the second half of life. Nowadays, the problem of periodontal disease is relevant due to its high prevalence, tendency to progression, multifaceted influence on the dentoalveolar system and the whole organism as well as uncertain treatment. Therefore, there is a need to find optimal ways of prevention and treatment of this disease. Close relationships between periodontal pathology and systemic diseases, such as hypertension, which affects every 2nd-3rd adult were determined. The objective of the research was to determine the status of oral cavity hygiene in patients with generalized periodontitis of II degree and stage II hypertension.Materials and methods. The study included 30 patients with generalized periodontitis of II degree and stage II hypertension being treated in the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Clinical Cardiology Dispensary; the average age ranged from 35 to 54 years (the main group). The control group included 10 patients of the same age without generalized periodontitis and somatic pathology .The status of oral cavity hygiene was determined using the Green Vermillion index. The diagnosis of periodontal disease was made on the basis of the classification proposed by M.F. Danilevskyi. The obtained results were subjected to variation-statistical analysis using statistical package “Stat Soft 6.0”; classical methods of variational statistics were applied; mean values and their reliability were evaluated.Results. The results of examination showed poor oral hygiene in almost all patients. The analysis of hygienic indices showed the following results: in patients of the main group, the Green Vermillion index was 1.99 ± 0.13 points (p<0.001) which corresponds to unsatisfactory level of oral hygiene. In patients of the control group, this index was 1.10 ± 0.17 points which corresponds to satisfactory level of oral hygiene. According to the index, 9 (30.0%) patients of the main group had satisfactory oral hygiene, 12 (40.0%) patients had poor oral hygiene, and in 9 (30.0%) patients, poor oral hygiene was observed. In the control group, 2 (20.0%) patients had good oral hygiene, 6 (60.0%) patients had satisfactory oral hygiene and in 2 (20.0%) patients, unsatisfactory oral hygiene was observed. There were no patients with poor oral hygiene. The analysis of the indicators of the Green Vermillion index showed that in case of the pathological process exacerbation the oral hygiene status in patients deteriorated.Conclusions. The level of oral hygiene in patients of both groups was low due to incorrect selection of personal hygiene products or their untimely replacement. In patients with generalized periodontitis of II degree and stage II hypertension, the level of oral hygiene was lower than in somatically healthy persons: the worse status of oral cavity hygiene – the more pronounced changes in the periodontal tissues. We can suppose that high blood pressure affects the status of the oral cavity, creates a higher risk and exacerbates the periodontal diseases.

Radionuclide imaging is used to evaluate the status of neck nodes preoperatively in a small group of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. An area adjacent to the carcinoma, and a similar area on the opposite side of the oral cavity, are injected with Technetium (Tc) 99m labeled sulfur minicolloid. Differences in imaging intensity between both sides of the neck is used to predict the presence of metastases. Neck dissection confirms the histologic status of the nodes. The scan correctly predicts the Presence of metastases in 100% (2/2) of patients with palpable nodes, and the absence of metastases in 75% (3/4) of patients with clinically tested negative necks.

Abstract BackgroundNutrition is one of the major determinants of human health. Consuming plant foods provides not only nutrients but also bioactive substances that reduce disease. The health of the oral cavity is determined by the quality of food, including vegetable food.ObjectiveTo study the effects of macro and microelements in vegetables on the status of mineralised dental tissues in relation to the hygiene and nutritional habits in 15-year-old adolescents living in Lublin Province and Lviv Oblast.MethodsThe chemical composition of plants was assessed (macro and microelements) of carrots and potatoes, vegetables consumed by 15-year-old inhabitants of Poland and Ukraine. The status of mineralised dental tissues was assessed based on caries severity expressed by the mean D3MFT number and the SIC index value. Another part of the study was a socio-medical survey focused on assessment of patients' eating habits. The respondents answered questions about the frequency of consumption of fruit and vegetables and fruit juices.ResultsThe chemical composition of plants depended on the species and place of cultivation. The present study showed higher caries frequency in the group of the 15-year-olds living in Kraśnik, i.e. 88% vs. 75% in the group from Chervonograd. The intensity of caries measured by the mean D3MFT value in the 15-year-old teenagers from Chervonograd who declared everyday consumption of fresh vegetables and fruit was 3.77, and from Krasnik 5.17.ConclusionThe present results show that carrots are a good source of microelements for humans, whereas potatoes provide potassium and calcium. The impact of the frequency of consuming plant products on the health of the oral cavity, which depended on the place of youth research.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to describe the presence and impaction status of third molars in a Western U.P. population between age group of 17 and 24 years. A total of 3000 college students were clinically evaluated for the status of their 3rd molars. Out of these, the soft tissue associated with prophylactically extracted asymptomatic 3rd molars was histopathologically assessed. A definite eruption pattern of third molars was observed such that the percentage of teeth that were not erupted was much higher at age 17 years than at age 24 years. A decline in the eruption of teeth along with increased chances of impaction for teeth which were not erupted at 21 years was noted. Hence, it can be hypothesized that a substantial proportion of teeth impacted at 17 years do erupt fully, in the oral cavity with maximal chances of eruption between 17-21 years of age. The assessment of soft tissue changes in asymptomatically extracted teeth revealed definite histopathological alterations.

One measure of the maturity of a device technology is the ease and reliability of applying contact metallurgy. Compared to metal contact of silicon, the status of GaAs metallization is still at its primitive stage. With the advent of GaAs MESFET and integrated circuits, very stringent requirements were placed on their metal contacts. During the past few years, extensive researches have been conducted in the area of Au-Ge-Ni in order to lower contact resistances and improve uniformity. In this paper, we report the results of TEM study of interfacial reactions between Ni and GaAs as part of the attempt to understand the role of nickel in Au-Ge-Ni contact of GaAs.N-type, Si-doped, (001) oriented GaAs wafers, 15 mil in thickness, were grown by gradient-freeze method. Nickel thin films, 300Å in thickness, were e-gun deposited on GaAs wafers. The samples were then annealed in dry N2 in a 3-zone diffusion furnace at temperatures 200°C - 600°C for 5-180 minutes. Thin foils for TEM examinations were prepared by chemical polishing from the GaA.s side. TEM investigations were performed with JE0L- 100B and JE0L-200CX electron microscopes.

Measurement of the egg's electrical activity, the fertilization potential or the activation current (in voltage clamped eggs), provides a means of detecting the earliest perceivable response of the egg to the fertilizing sperm. By using the electrical physiological record as a “real time” indicator of the instant of electrical continuity between the gametes, eggs can be inseminated with sperm at lower, more physiological densities, thereby assuring that only one sperm interacts with the egg. Integrating techniques of intracellular electrophysiological recording, video-imaging, and electron microscopy, we are able to identify the fertilizing sperm precisely and correlate the status of gamete organelles with the first indication (fertilization potential/activation current) of the egg's response to the attached sperm. Hence, this integrated system provides improved temporal and spatial resolution of morphological changes at the site of gamete interaction, under a variety of experimental conditions. Using these integrated techniques, we have investigated when sperm-egg plasma membrane fusion occurs in sea urchins with respect to the onset of the egg's change in electrical activity.
