The implementation of an English atmosphere will bring abundant impact for all university entities to create a supportive environment in increasing their English competencies. The study aims at investigating the level of self-efficacy among non-English lecturers to use English in any academic setting. The study applied a mixed-method study which formulated a descriptive quantitative analysis and phenomenological approach as a qualitative analysis. The respondents were 19 non-English lecturers of the Physiotherapy program in Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Yogyakarta taken by total sampling; questionnaires were used to collect data quantitatively, and a structured interview was also applied to take qualitative data. The study shows that 50% of lecturers have a moderate rate of self-efficacy in describing their mastery experience although they have a high rate in determining their somatic and emotional states in judging their capability. In addition, vicarious experience does not become a strong predictor in increasing self-efficacy among lecturers. However, rigid policy from the university is the most significant factor in supporting lecturers to use English in academic settings.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v6i1.5940

Background. The safe use of medicines largely relies on consumers reading the labeling and packaging carefully and accurately, and being able to comprehend and act on the information presented. We aimed to conduct local study on consumers’ perceptions, attitudes and use of written drug information. Methods. A survey included 200 adults of the public in 13 community pharmacies and one main hospital (the University Hospital) in Tripoli city of Libya, using a structured interview technique. Results. The results showed that 73% of participants read drug labels with variation from always (39.72 %) to rarely (10.95%). About 42.46% of pharmacy customers read the Patients Package Inserts (PPIs) routinely, however; 53.42% of them faced difficulties in understanding the labelling. Foreign languages and small font sizes of written information were the most barriers to participants` comprehensibility (44.69 %, 34%) respectively. The findings indicated that 59 % of the respondents were used to obtain information from pharmacists. Despite the relatively high rate of reading to drug labels among pharmacy customers; more than half of them were unable to interpret information correctly. Conclusion. The study demonstrated the need for the implementation of educational and awareness programs for patients by pharmacists to improve the health literacy of medication labels. Steps must be taken to ensure that medicines in Libyan market are supplied with bilingual and non-technical language labels.

The purpose of this study was to compare students’ digital media use during the so-called corona semester in summer of 2020 when universities worldwide moved to online teaching and learning, with data from 2018. Two research questions were at the center of our study: To what extent did students’ media use during the digital summer semester 2020 differ from media use in 2018? In which ways is media use in 2020 related to individual factors (e.g., emotional states, social integration, self-efficacy)? In 2020, 207 students at the University of Tübingen participated in an online survey on their digital media use. This data was compared with an existing data set from the same university from 2018 (N = 808 students). Results show a significant increase in students’ media use across all categories, in particular Learning Management System, online exercises, learning videos, and video conferencing. We also found a significant relation of students’ usage of online tools for learning with their feeling of social integration, as well as connections between students’ digital media self-efficacy and their learning-relevant emotions. The article discusses these results in the light of other studies on students’ media uses and provides first practical implications for lecturers.

The study intended to look back the experiences of the last batch of the university graduates taking Music, Arts and Physical Education as the area of specialization in Education in one of the Higher Education Institutions in Cebu, Philippines. Specifically, the study elaborated on the graduates’ personal and professional characteristics, retrospective evaluation, perceived levels of self-efficacy and lived experiences of the graduates on how the program aided them in their teaching profession. Concurrent mixed method was utilized in the study: (1) descriptive retrospective survey using a questionnaire (quantitative) and (2) narrative inquiry design (qualitative) using semi-structured interview with the nine graduates as the key informants of the study. All nine graduates are employed, with seven of them teaching in their field. Graduates’ retrospective evaluation of their university experience revealed that their practicum experience was the most relevant which provided them the edge and opportunity to taste the reality of teaching. The strength of the program is identified in dance and sports while the teaching of health, music and arts-related courses were regarded weak. Graduates perceived level of self – efficacy was high as indicated by their ability to develop initiatives towards professional growth, and to work with people of different backgrounds. Further, three (3) emerging themes revealed as the self-instilled work values of the graduates such as persistence, love of work and open-mindedness that assisted them to be able to sustain and survive in their teaching career. This study concluded that Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPE) is still relevant even with the existence of the new mandated Physical Education curricular program to the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies of the MAPE graduates vis-à-vis to the demand and need of the labor market and of what is expected from them in this changing time.

Article visualizations:

Self-efficacy entails the belief of an individual in oneself for the accomplishment of a specific task. The study investigated sources as well as perceptions that promoted the development of academic self-efficacy of undergraduates. The phenomenological approach employed to analyze the perceptions of undergraduate male engineering students. As phenomenology found compatible with undergraduate students to explain their feelings, experiences, and thoughts about returning to obtain their engineering degree in university after being dropped out. Five participants from private Sindh chartered university responded through an adapted semi-structured interview that reflected their responses on the components of self-efficacy; (a) performance experience, (b) vicarious learning, (c) verbal persuasion, (d) affective states and physical sensation. The data was analyzed by thematization. The findings of the study suggested that components of self-efficacy were the strongest predictors for undergraduate male students who had been dropped out of university to eventually return to earn their engineering degree in university. Furthermore, the study also explored those perceptions about components of self-efficacy that provided a framework to learn those experiences that impact on the academic success of undergraduate male students who had dropped out of university to eventually return to earn their engineering degree in university.

This study examined if beliefs about emotion change across emotional contexts in daily life, and investigated whether people with prominent features of borderline personality pathology experience greater shifts in emotion beliefs during emotional states compared to people without borderline features. Undergraduate participants with (n = 49) and without borderline features (n = 50) completed a one week ecological momentary assessment study where 7x/day they provided ratings of affect, nine different beliefs about emotion and indicators of momentary self-efficacy. Results indicated a significant between-person element to emotion beliefs, supporting the notion of beliefs as relatively schematic. In addition, people with borderline features generally experienced greater instability of beliefs over time compared to people without borderline features. In addition, most of the beliefs about emotion shifted with either positive or negative affect. For many of the emotion beliefs, the relationships between affect and belief were moderated by borderline group. Finally, momentary beliefs about emotion also predicted momentary self-efficacy for tolerating distress and exerting willpower. Taken together, results confirm that beliefs about emotion can fluctuate in daily life and that there are implications for emotion beliefs for people who struggle with emotion regulation and impulsivity (i.e., people with features of borderline personality) as well as for self-efficacy in tolerating emotion and engaging in goal-directed action.

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease is the 4th leading cause of death in North Carolina for people 65 and older. People with dementia are hospitalized more often and have prolonged stays, poorer outcomes, higher costs, and increased readmission rates. Hospital employees have expressed the desire to have specialized training to learn how to more effectively communicate with and provide better care to patients with dementia. To address identified patient and hospital employee needs, the University of North Carolina (UNC) Center for Aging and Health is disseminating hospital-specific dementia-friendly training at five hospitals within the UNC Health System. The training is being delivered via online modules and follow-up didactic sessions over a three-year period to clinical and non-clinical staff who interact with patients. To date, 1,948 employees at three of the five hospitals have launched the online training; 1,102 have completed the training. The pilot training took place at the UNC Hospitals--Hillsborough Campus (“Hillsborough Hospital”) in 2019. Hillsborough Hospital staff (n=195) who participated in the dementia friendly training completed a survey to assess their ability to recognize symptoms and provide appropriate care to dementia patients pre- and post-training. Clinical staff answered 23 Likert scale self-efficacy questions; non-clinical staff answered the first 12 of these questions. Positive change in self-efficacy ratings from pre- to post-training was significant for every question (p < .0001). Additional results will be included in the poster. The dementia-friendly hospital initiative is preparing employees to provide better care for people with dementia and is effective in increasing employee self-efficacy.
