This research analyzes the conflict that happened on the character in "The lady in the looking glass” this short story by Virginia Woolf was published in 1929. The conflict that happened is Internal and external conflict. This research aims to analyze the conflict in Mrs. Isabella. In real-life conflict always happened, The theory based on Muller and John A William (1982:44) where there is divided conflict into two kinds, first is internal conflict dan second is an external conflict.  This paper tries to make a study from a new perspective and new interpreting this modern short story with the theory of the conflict in the short story. This study aims to know the conflict that happens on Mrs. Isabella as the main character in the short story “The lady in the looking glass”. This study analyzes the sentence and quotation in a short story. The goal of this study is the researcher applied theory about the conflict to Mrs. Isabella has a conflict in the form like mental, physical, and moral.by the character.

Some of Virginia Woolf's writing is analytical of the literary world, including its history and processes. Woolf's essay "Modern Fiction" and short story "Solid Objects" analyze and criticize modern writing and can be seen as doing so within similar contexts, albeit in different modes. The main character of "Solid Objects" is arguably representative of Woolf's feelings, made clear in "Modern Fiction" of where modern writing is in the midst of going.

The article compares two examples of modernist short stories of the early twentieth century – „Kew Gardens” by the British writer W. Woolf and „Intermezzo” by the Ukrainian writer M. Kotsyubynsky. Such a comparative study has been carried out for the first time. Most researchers associate Woolfe with „stream of consciousness” literature, but in the short story „Kew Gardens” we see signs of impressionist poetics. “Intermezzo” by M. Kotsiubynsky is traditionally regarded as an example of impressionism. In both texts, the narration is in the first person, there are elements of the „stream of consciousness”; the opposition of social and natural worlds is shown. The narrators in both short stories enjoy the contemplation of nature. The English literary writing contains a fragmentary composition, combining disparate, unrelated episodes. In the Ukrainian text, we observe the internal evolution of the main character-narrator, who is internally reborn in the bosom of nature, filled with new forces. Differences between short stories: Virginia Woolf depicts several visitors to London’s Kew Gardens; Kotsyubinsky creates an autobiographical image of the writer, who is reborn under the influence of nature. In both literary writings, sound, visual, tactile images play an important role, in particular, images of flowers, a snail (W. Woolf), summer fields, the sun, larks, three white shepherd dogs (M. Kotsyubinsky). Both literary writings are examples of the psychological mood of the modernist novella. A comparative analysis of the two texts allows us to compare the Ukrainian literary process with world trends.

Abstract: This study aims to look at narrative patterns in the collection of short stories "Karaban Snow Dance" (TSK). From the fifteen short stories, the researchers took five main stories, namely the Karaban Snow Dance (Tarian Salju Karaban), The Fall of a Leaf (Gugurnya Sehelai Daun),  Canting Kinanti Song (Tembang Canting Kinanti), Jagoan Men Arrived (Lelaki Jagoan Tiba), and Origami Pigeon (Merpati Origami). Of the five short stories, environmental themes and honesty appear most often. The place setting depicted shows the environment that is close to the author or according to the author's origin. The main characters in the four short stories are children, only one short story Male Hero Tiban (Lelaki Jagoan Tiban/LJK) who uses adult takoh as the main character. The child leaders in LJK only appear in the past stories of the main characters. The five short stories do not show a picture of whole parents (father and mother). The warm relationship between mother and child appears clearly, in contrast to the father-child relationship that is almost negligent. The five short stories also represent how children become heroes for their family, friends, and environment.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pola narasi pada kumpulan cerpen Tarian Salju Karaban (TSK). Dari limabelas cerpen yang ada, peneliti mengambil lima cerpen utama yakni “Tarian Salju Karaban”, “Gugurnya Sehelai Daun”, “Tembang Canting Kinanti”, “Lelaki Jagoan Tiba”, dan “Merpati Origami”. Kelima cerpen menampilkan tema lingkungan dan kejujuran. Latar tempat yang digambarkan memperlihatkan lingkuangan yang dekat dengan penulis atau sesuai dengan asal usul penulis. Tokoh utama dalam keempat cerpen tersebut ialah anak-anak, hanya satu cerpen “Lelaki Jagoan Tiban” (LJK) yang menggunakan takoh dewasa sebagai tokoh utama. Tokoh anak dalam LJK hanya muncul dalam cerita masa lalu tokoh utama. Kelima cerpen tersebut tidak memperlihatkan gambaran orangtua utuh (ayah dan ibu). Relasi yang hangat antara ibu dan anak muncul dengan jelas, berbeda dengan relasi bapak-anak yang nyaris alpa. Kelima  cerpen tersebut juga merepresentasikan bagaimana anak-anak menjadi pahlawan bagi keluarga, sahabat, dan lingkungannya.

This article describes about the figure of children world in a short story “Anggrek Rara” written by Ina Inong, by connecting the social structure in the text and in the real life. After analyzing the social structure in the story, it is found that the plot of this story was the progressive plot, the background was from the social fact that came from inner house and outer house, otherwise the central character were Rara and Bunda. By analyzing social structure of text, it was found that a family (home) is the serious and formal environment while outer house is free and non formal. The result of the research showed that the children short story “ Anggrek Rara” was expected to give the figure outlines of the children world.AbstrakPenelitian ini membahas tentang gambaran dunia anak dalam cerita pendek anak “Anggrek Rara” karya Ina Inong dengan menghubungkan struktur sosial teks dalam karya dan struktur sosial teks dengan realitas. Melalui analisis struktur sosial dalam karya terungkap bahwa alur cerita ini merupakan alur lurus, latar terdiri dari fakta sosial yang bersumber dari rumah dan di luar rumah, sedangkan tokoh Rara dan Bunda adalah tokoh sentral. Melalui analisis struktur sosial teks dengan realitas terungkap bahwa keluarga (rumah) merupakan lingkungan yang sifatnya serius dan formal, sedangkan di luar rumah bahkan bersifat bebas dan non formal. Hasil yang diperoleh dari analisis ini menunjukkan bahwa cerita pendek anak “Anggrek Rara” dianggap mampu memberikan garis-garis besar gambaran kehidupan dunia anak.

The first traces of modernism in Iranian society can be found in the second decade of twentieth century which was deeply embedded with religious concepts. With regard to Persian literature, short story was developed as a new genre and a sign of modernism of that period by prominent Iranian writers such as Sadeq Hedayat (1903-1951), Mohammad Ali Jamalzadeh (1892-1997) and Sadegh Chubak (1916-1998). In this way a cultural clash was broken out between the traditional religious concepts and the new modern ideas. Among these writers, Chubak was more influenced by the doctrine of modernism. He expressed his message colloquially through his short stories to instigate the lower part of society. His naturalistic style of writing delved into the most gruesome details of people's life with the aim of shocking his reader in experiencing a new perspective previously ignored. To highlight Chubak's style of writing attempt is made to explore one of the highly praised short stories entitled "An Afternoon in Late Autumn" on the ground of the Bakhtin's theory of grotesque realism cited in Rabelais and His World. Grotesque realism is a site upon which religious and social hierarchies can be subverted and renewed. This study tries to reveal that Chubak followed the Bakhtin's grotesque realism to evoke a new outlook particularly in the lower section of society.

Tulisan ini membahas citra perempuan Banten dalam cerpen yang dimuat di harian Radar Banten dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Budaya Banten melatarbelakangi para cerpenis dalam melukiskan perempuan Banten. Para penulis dapat memotret sebagian kehidupan para perempuan tersebut melalui tokoh-tokoh rekaan yang diciptakan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengkaji citra perempuan Banten melalui deskripsi para cerpenis dalam harian Radar Banten. Sumber data utama berasal dari empat belas cerpen yang dimuat tahun 2006—2010. Setelah analisis data melalui teori feminisme, diketahui bahwa citra perempuan Banten dalam cerpen tersebut adalah perempuan sebagai sosok pemimpin pemerintahan, penulis, perempuan berkekuatan magis, pemegang norma, pekerja keras, penyabar, penyayang, perempuan yang agamis, dan perempuan metropolis.Abstract:This paper discusses the image of Banten women in short stories published in Radar Banten. It  uses a qualitative descriptive method. Banten’s  cultural background depicts women in Banten. The writers of short story can capture some of the women’s real life through fiction’s characters. The purpose of this study is to examine the image of women through the description of the short story’s writers in Radar Banten. The main data sources were taken from fourteen short stories published in 2006—2010. Having analyzed the data using feminism theory, it is found out that the image of women in short stories of Radar Banten is the figure of woman as government leader, writer, woman with magical power, obedient norm woman, hardworking woman, patient and caring woman, religious woman, and  metropolitan woman.

This paper analyses the concept of thrownness and the related notions of immediacy and actuality in a 1961 short science fiction story “Wall of Crystal, Eye of Night” by Algis Budrys. It first defines the concept of thrownness (Geworfenheit), created and coined by the German philosopher Martin Heidegger in his classic book Being and Time, and it explains how this notion can be employed in literary analysis in general and applied to this work in particular. The article then analyses how certain stylistic devices in the short story, namely similes, change of pace and the presentation of an inner conflict in the main character, contribute to the feeling of authenticity. In other words, it attempts to exhibit the means used in a prose work to make it seem more realistic and immediate. Finally, the work also argues that science fiction is in many ways more real than other fictional works. Although it belongs to the genre that has traditionally been denied serious literary merit, the novel view and interpretation of this story aims to disclose new horizons of artistic expression that illuminate human mental and physical frailty and stimulate a valuable inquiry into the meaning of life.

A story becomes interesting because of the existence of the characters’ conflicts. This research objectives were to investigate the conflicts and defense mechanisms in Audrey Turner, the main character of Finding Audrey novel written by Sophie Kinsella. This research was conducted in qualitative method by using narrative research design. The collected data were identified, categorized, and analyzed based on literature and psychology perspectives of Islam’s (2016) theory and defense mechanisms by Cramer (2006). The findings show that person vs him/herself as the internal conflict is found 52 times (67.5%). The first external conflict found is person vs person which appears 23 times (29.9%) It is followed by person vs society and person vs nature conflicts, each of which appears once only (1.3%). Three kinds of defense mechanisms are found as well. The denial defense mechanisms are found 72 times (54.1%) whereas projection and identification are each found as many as 48 times (36.1%) and 13 times (9.8%). It means that  Audrey, as the main character, mostly faces conflicts against her own self and feels of fears affected from her anxiety disorder and people around her. To deal with her conflicts, Audrey mostly uses denial as a defense mechanism to protect herself.

Many people, like the protagonist of Dorothy Parker’s short story “Too Bad,” wonder “what did married people talk about, anyway, when they were alone together?” Raymond Carver’s short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” is the literary rendition of the ways in which married couples talk. This essay analyses this short story taking into account sociolinguistic aspects related to men’s and women’s linguistic behaviour and the speech strategies each gender uses, so as to explore if these characters accurately reflect real life speech patterns or not.

 This thesis proposes that “George Silverman’s Explanation”—the last short story completed by Charles Dickens—should be read as Dickens’s final and most comprehensive treatise on writing. The argument states that Dickens, instead of outlining an explicit approach to the writing process, utilizes the narrative of George Silverman as an allegory to detail the formation of a story. The thesis suggests that the framework of “George Silverman’s Explanation” portrays the growth trajectory of the writer and his eternal struggle to create original work from the world of literature that precedes him. For a renowned author like Dickens, approaching his last short story as his departing discourse on the construction of literature is invaluable instruction for future writers. Interestingly, “George Silverman’s Explanation” is also Dickens’s least analyzed work. For this reason, this thesis addresses essentially all of the scholarship that has been written on the short story before preceding to add a new perspective on how the short story can be approached. Understanding this short story as a blueprint for writers provides an innovative and unique angle for approaching literature, since a writer reads with their eyes on the future—and the original works that they can create.
