Background: This study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of hyperhomocysteinaemia in Northern-Nigerian hypertensives and its association with hypertension severity and some major determinants as data regarding these are lackingin sub-Saharan Africa. Method: A Community-based cross-sectional study done on 120 randomly-selected hypertensive patients who responded to an ABU radio frequency modulated invitation for free health-screening at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Medical Centre from January 2016 to June 2016. The percentage of participants with high homocysteine levels, their anthropometric parameters and blood pressures were determined. Plasma homocysteine (hcy) was classified as normal (5-15), moderate (>15-30), intermediate (31-100) and severe (>100) μmol/L. Kruskal-Wallis test was applied and log-transformed homocysteine (Ln10Homocysteine) was correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressures as well as age, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, glomerular filtration rate, hypertension duration and Ln10folate in males and females using the Pearson’s Correlation analysis. Results: There were 83(69.2%) females and 37(30.8%) males with Median homocysteine of 20.8 μmol/L and 22.0 μmol/L respectively (p=0.003). Hyperhomocysteinaemia was found in 118(98.3%) hypertensives while 2(1.7%) subjects had normo-homocysteinaemia. Moderate hyperhomocysteinaemia (Median, 20.8 μmol/L) was identified in 105(87.5%) and intermediate (Median, 40 μmol/L) in 13(10.8%) (p<0.001). No subject had severe hyperhomocysteinaemia.Homocysteine was higher (p=0.003) in subjects with Stage 2 systolic hypertension. Ln10Homocysteine was significantly (p<0.001) correlated with blood pressure (SBP: r=0.45; DBP: r=0.40) and age (r=0.33). Conclusion: The prevalence of hyperhomocysteinaemia in North-Western Nigerian hypertensives is high as against normal healthy controls. Plasma homocysteine is higher with severe systolic hypertension and positively associated with age. Background: Evidence shows that most general practitioners have low knowledge related to diabetes self-management during Ramadan fasting. However, studies on healthcare providers’ competencies related to diabetes self-management during Ramadan fasting are still rare.Purpose: This study aimed to investigate healthcare providers’ knowledge, attitude, and perspective concerning diabetes self-management during Ramadan fasting. Methods: The study applied a cross-sectional design and was conducted in forty-one (41) community health centers in Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia. The study participants were medical doctors, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists, and public health officers. The total sampling technique was used. There were 205 healthcare providers who met the inclusion criteria. Their knowledge, attitude, and perspective were assessed using a questionnaire developed by Zainudin and Hussain. The Wilcoxon test was used to analyze the data. Results: The healthcare providers’ knowledge of Ramadan fasting was very low (36.79±26.11). More than half of the respondents (53.17%) advised diabetic patients to manage diabetes in general, although specific counseling for diabetic patients related to fasting in Ramadan month was not provided (55.12%). The perspective of Ramadan fasting among healthcare providers was moderate (62.68%±30.40). The results also showed that general and safe practice knowledge significantly affected the healthcare providers’ perspective toward Ramadan fasting (Z=-12.49, p=0.000), (Z=-12.02, p=0.000), respectively. Conclusion: Healthcare providers’ knowledge and attitude concerning diabetes self-management during Ramadan fasting were low. Accordingly, this affected their perspective. It is strongly recommended that a formal Ramadan fasting management training program should be given regularly to provide appropriate consultations and services.

Abstract Background: Adolescents are in their formative years, and they experience several changes including anthropometric changes. Significant weight gain occurs in adolescence, and increasingly, obesity and consequent increase in blood pressure (BP) are found in adolescents. Objective: This study compared anthropometric and BP measurements in male and female adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 1000 adolescents (510 males and 490 females) were selected by multi-stage sampling from eight secondary schools. Pertinent information was collected with the aid of a structured questionnaire, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0 version, and the means of anthropometric indices and blood pressures in males and females were compared using independent t-test. Results: The mean age for male respondents was 13.83 years (SD 2.12) and for females 13.62 (SD 1.96). Generally, anthropometric indices gradually increased from the lower ages to the higher ages in both males and females. The mean height was the same for both males and females (1.54 m), while the mean weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference were significantly higher in females than in males (p<0.05). A significantly higher proportion of females compared with males were overweight (10.2%, 5.3%) and obese (3.9%, 2.0%), respectively. The overall prevalence of “hypertension,” was 4.1% and more females (70.7%) had “hypertension” than males (29.3%). Conclusion: Females were heavier and constituted the greater proportion of those who had elevated BP. Adequate attention needs to be given to the challenging problems of overweight and obesity to forestall development of hypertension in adolescents, especially female adolescents.
