Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) is a specie of Plasmodium parasite responsible for the pathogenicity of malaria, a disease with several complications reported as the leading cause of over 1 million deaths worldwide. In this study, the effects of malaria on the kidney (Renal) histo-architecture was studied ex-vivo in albino mice rats. Twenty one (21) albino mice rats of between 30 – 35g weights were procured, acclimatized for two weeks in the animal unit of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. They were then grouped into three (3) of seven (7) mice each, following which group I received standard rat diet and water ad libitum (control). Using the 2ml syringe, Groups II and III were inoculated with 0.2 ml of the malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei each intra-peritoneally. While group II mice were left untreated for 7 days, group III (infested) mice were administered with 5.7 mg/kg body weight of Coartem (an anti-malaria), morning and evening for 1 week. Following period of administration of substances, kidneys were harvested, rid of adherent tissues, and subjected through histological scrutiny to ascertain the changes in renal histo-morphology across groups. For each group, body weight changes were also noted within test duration and compared between groups with the one way analysis of variance. Where differences exist, the tukey (Post Hoc) test was used to ascertain the cause of the differences in body weight due to P. berghei. From the result, a statistically significant decrease (p > 0.05) in body weight was observed in P. berghei infested mice (Groups II and II) compared with control (group I). Body weight however recovered in Group III mice treated with coartem, proving to have increased significantly (p < 0.05) compared to control group. Renal histo-architectural changes revealed glomerulosclerosis, interstitial oedema and congested vessels in group II mice compared to control. We recommend similar study in other tissues other than the kidney for reference purposes

Olanzapine is an antipsychotic drug effective in the treatment of stress-associated psychiatric illnesses, but its effect on the spleen remains unclear. Vitamin C is essential for the optimum function of the immune system. We aim to investigate the effect of Olanzapine on spleen structures and to assess the protective effect of vitamin C. Forty adult male albino rats were divided into four groups: group (I), a control; group (II), rats were given vitamin C at 40 mg/kg body weight; group (III), rats were given Olanzapine at 2 mg/kg body weight; and group (IV), rats were given vitamin C and Olanzapine at the same dose of group (II) and group (III) for one month. The hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) of the olanzapine treated group showed focal areas of cellular depletion and a decrease in the size of the white pulp. The red pulp was expanded and showed marked congestion and dilatation of blood sinusoids. Cluster of differentiation 3 (CD3) was significantly reduced, however both tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were significantly higher. The administration of vitamin C repaired structural and immunohistochemical changes via increased CD3 and decreased TNF-α and VEGF. Therefore, the oxidative and the inflammatory pathways may be the possible mechanisms underlying olanzapine immunotoxicity. Vitamin C exerted immune modulator and antioxidant effects against olanzapine.

The effect of environmental conditions on hatching indices of poultry eggs is sufficiently important that new methods for their improvement are sought, among others through exposing the eggs during hatching to an artificially generated magnetic field of variable frequency. Hatching eggs in this study came from Pharaoh quail in the 4th month of laying. The flock was kept under optimum microclimate conditions and fed a complete feed mix containing 21% total protein and 11.7 MJ ME. The eggs (n = 150), after weighing, were divided into 3 groups equal in respect of numbers: control (I) and two experimental (II and III). The eggs of group II and III were exposed to the action of variable magnetic field of the same intensity but different times of application. The highest percentage of dead embryos during incubation in relation to fertilised eggs was found in control group (11.36%), while the smallest was from group II (4.17%). The highest value of hatching indices calculated in relation to fertilised eggs was found in group II (91.6%), while the smallest was in group III (83.7%) with 86.3% in control group. The results point to the possibility of increasing egg hatchability indices through the use of additional variable magnetic field. The chicks hatched from eggs exposed to the action of this experimental agent had similar body weight. The average weight of one-day-old chicks ranged from 7.82 g (group II) to 8.05 g (group III). In the last week of rearing, mean body weight in both sexes was similar and ranged from 168 (group I) to 172 g (group III) in males, and from 186 g (group I) to 199 g (group III) in females; these differences were not statistically significant. The females of group III reached sexual maturity at 41 days, this being one and three days (non-significantly) earlier than birds in group I and II. &nbsp;

Background: Insecticides such as lambda-cyhalothrin(LCT), dibenzalacetone (DBA) and heptanone HD are teratogenic substances. Skeleton is one of the organs sensitive to teratogens during the period of organogenesis. Material and methods:This study was conducted on fifty adult female albino mice, divided randomly into four groups: Group I (control group, n= 5 received corn oil orally in adose of 10 mg /kg body weight), group II (LCT group, n=10 received LCT (nano 8%)10, 20 mg /kg body weight for each subgroup), group III (DBA group, n=20, received DBA (main) 10, 20 mg /kg body weight and DBA (nano 8%)) 10,20mg /kg body weight for each subgroup) and group IV (HD group, n=15, received HD (main) 10 mg /kg body weight and HD (nano 8%)) 10,50mg /kg body weight for each subgroup),The calculated treatment dissolved in 1 ml of corn oil by orogastric tube was given to the pregnant mice during the first week of pregnancy (1st, 3rd and 5th day).The delivered live and dead pups were examined externally, then double stained and prepared for skeletal examination by dissecting microscope. Results: All experimental groups showed various anomalies that can be categorized as the following: 1) presence of dead pups and resorption sites 2) macroscopic anomalies in the form of anencephaly, extended forelimb, cranioshisis, macroglossia, lowset ears, lage eye bulge, half body, amelia, internal rotation of forelimb and encephalocele. 3) skeletal anomalies by double staining of fetal skeleton showed incomplete ossification of nasal and interparietal bones, open arch of atlas, incomplete ossification of vertebrae, supernumerary ribs, wavy ribs, incomplete ossification of ribs and sternebrae, incomplete ossification of sternum, incomplete ossification of 5th metacarpal and terminal phalangal bones and incomplete ossification of tarsal , and phalangal bones. Conclusion: Lambda-cyhalothrin, dibenzalacetone and derivatives of heptanone result in numbers of congenital gross and skeletal abnormalities that indicate their teratogenic effect. The study was established to study the effects of supplementation with Sida alba leaves on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, live body weight changes of Sudanese Desert lambs. Fifteen Lambs of 4-6 months old and weighing 18±500 kg were divided into three similar groups each with five animals. Seven days were allowed for adaptation. The lambs were weighed weekly for 8 weeks. Daily feed intake was obtained by subtracting the remained amounts from quantities offered the day before. Feces were collected at the last ten days for determination of nutrients digestibility coefficients via total feces collection method. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance. Differences among means were detected using least significant difference test. The results indicated that group II that was on natural grazing supplemented with Sida alba leaves consumed significantly (p<0.01) greater amount of feed compared to group I that was on the natural grazing only and group III supplemented with a concentrate ration feed intake was 1316,730, 1381,500 and 1207.650 g for group I, II and III, respectively. No significant differences (P≥0.05) in digestibility coefficients of all nutrients between group II and III but group I had lowers coefficients than II and III. Total and daily body weight was higher in group II and III when compared with group I. The biomass production was estimated to be 84.910 g/shrub or 1.697 per hectare based on a square meter space for a plant. It was concluded Sida alba leaves could support lambs on low quality grazing.

Effect of supplementing giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) and mint (Mentha arvensis) on feed intake and body weight was studied in twenty crossbred calves. While Group I was taken as control, Group II was supplemented with Tinospora cordifolia @ 4% of concentrate, group III with Mentha arvensis @ 4% of concentrate and group IV with both Tinospora cordifolia and Mentha arvensis @ 2% of concentrate each. Significantly higher(P 0.05) dry matter intake(Kg) and dry matter intake(g)/W 0.75Kg in group III was recorded compared to control while group II did not differ from group IV. Significantly higher body weight gain was noticed in group IV compared to other groups. Giloy and/or mint can be fed to improve growth in crossbred calves.

Objective: To study the ameliorative effect of Alpha-Tocopherol (Vitamin E) against E-cigarette induced histomorphalogical changes in adrenal cortex of male Albino rats. Study Design: Randomized Animal Control Trial. Setting: Department of Anatomy, Islamic International Medical College Rawalpindi in collaboration with National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad. Period: September 2018 to September 2019. Material & Methods: 30 adult male albino rats were divided in three groups having 10 rats each. Normal diet and distilled water was given to control group (Group I) including 10 rats, for 4 weeks. The Rats of Group II were injected E-cigarette liquid 0.5mg per kg body weight per day diluted in 500ul normal saline intraperitoneally for 4 weeks. The experimental rats in Group III, in addition to E-cigarette liquid also received Vitamin E, 100mg per kg body weight per day mixed in daily diet. Dissection of the animals was done after completion of 4 weeks and adrenal gland was removed for histological analysis. Data was recorded and analyzed in SPSS™ version 21. Results: Alpha-Tocopherol restored the quantitative changes induced by E-Cigarette liquid in adrenal cortex in Group III, which was increased in the rats of Group II who were injected E-Cigarette liquid. Among microscopic parameters Orientation of cells, sinusoidal dilatation was significantly reduced in all adrenal cortex zones by Alpha-Tocopherol in Group III animals. Conclusion: The current study demonstrated that Alpha-Tocopherol had an ameliorative effect on histological changes caused by E-cigarette liquid on adrenal cortex.

Thyroxine hormone (T4) was one of the hormones related to metabolism rate. Animal transportation could be stressor interfering metabolism. Sargassum crasifoium was one of brown algae species that contained some important nutrients and also flavonoids. The study aimed at finding out the effect of the Sargassum on the decrase in thyroxine hormone and body weight loss. It used 9 Javanese Randu goats that were classified into 3 treatment groups. Group I served as control, Group II was treated with 450 mg/kg BW of Sargassum estract and Group III was treated with vitamin B1. All of the goats were transported for 12 hours using pickup truck at the speed of 60 km/hour. Blood samples were drawn before the transportation, during loading, 6 hours after the transportation and at the end of the transportation, while the body weight of the goats was weighed before and after the transportation. The results of the study showed that the T4 hormone decreased in the Group I and increased in the Group III during the transportation, while it was stable in the Group II. The biggest percentage of the body weight loss took place to the Group III (0.13%), while the smallest percentage took place to the Group II (0.063%). Statistical analysis showed that the Sargassum extract did not have any significant effect (p>0.05) on both the thyroxine hormone and the body weight loss during the transportation. Based on the results of the study it could be concluded that the Sargassum extract could stabilize the thyroxine hormone during the transportation so that it could prevent the body weight loss

The article presents the comparative analysis of the state of the cervix in women with endometrial polyps and micropolyps. Patients and methods. The study involved 130 patients aged 18-35 years: 70 patients with endometrial polyps (group I), 30 patients with micropolyps (group II) and 30 patients of the control group (group III). Results. According to the anamnesis of women in the I group were significantly more frequent diseases of the cervix, which corrected physical surgery methods, in particular cryodestruction. In group II, the representatives of these indicators were similar to healthy. Normal colposcopic picture met significantly less frequently in patients and I, and II group. The differences in the incidence of HPV high oncogenic risk in all groups were not statistically significant. Conclusion. Destructive methods used in the detection of any changes in the cervix are often overly aggressive, form scars and contributing to inflamaciones process. In the chain of events leading to the formation of PE, cervical pathology and its correction can take the basic place. The monthly wool growth of three groups of rams was studied at Beltsville, Maryland. Group I received natural daylight (at 38° 53' N.) and was shorn monthly. Group II had a 7:17 hours of daylight to hours of darkness rhythm and was shorn every 6 months, once in winter and once in summer. Group III received natural daylight and was likewise shorn every 6 months. The rams of all groups produced more wool in summer than in winter. This difference was significant (P<0.001). The mean body weight and food intake were both greater in the winter months, which indicated that the seasonal rhythm of wool growth was not a consequence of poorer feeding in winter. The rams which were shorn monthly (group I) grew considerably more wool than the other two groups, but the difference was not statistically significant. The short-day treatment of group II did not increase the annual wool production nor decrease the seasonal rhythm of wool growth. The balance of evidence from this and other experiments indicates that temperature rather than light controls the seasonal rhythm of wool growth.

Irisin is a new myokine that is suspected to influence metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, there is a great controversy with respect to its level in cases of MetS and its correlation with different metabolic parameters. The present study assesses irisin levels in MetS patients and studies its relationship to metabolic and liver functions to evaluate the possible role of the liver in regulation of this level. Sixty subjects were included in this experiment, who were divided into 3 groups: group I (normal control), group II (MetS patients with normal liver enzymes), and group III (MetS with elevated liver enzymes and fatty liver disease). Serum irisin levels showed significant increases in groups II and III compared with group I, and significant increases in group III compared with group II. Also, irisin levels were positively correlated with body mass index, serum triglycerides, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), and liver enzymes. We concluded that serum irisin levels increased in patients with MetS, especially those with elevated liver enzymes, and had a positive correlation with parameters of lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis with the possibility of hepatic clearance to irisin.
