Abstract The research of railway track surfaces is aimed at improving the quality of railway infrastructure and providing the chance of improving the safety of driving. Therefore, it is advisable to constantly monitor track surface, but the research itself is not innovative because it is based on a known procedure. The crucial element are the techniques that allow to delve into the sources of problems. The aim of the article is to use the selected instruments of quality management to analyze the causes of track twist at high (180 km/h) speed of driving. The analysis of the causes of track twist was done on the basis of results from the measurement of one kilometer track section of the Krakow Glowny - Medyka route, which was made by using the TEC measuring device in April 2018. It was inferred that it is impossible to reach 180 km/h without track twist. In order to identify the causes of track twist it was proposed to use the selected sequence of quality management instruments, i.e.: brainstorming, Ishikawa diagram and the 5Why method. The identified causes of track twist include the abrasion of rail, scratches and exploitation point. The analysis and conclusions drawn from it may be useful in the analysis of other problems in railway transport as well as production and service industries.

Current geopolitical and economic conditions for the functioning of railway transport in most post-Soviet states are such that it is extremely difficult to provide required quality of transport services and break-even operations at high expenses for maintaining the railway infrastructure and rolling stock. Dynamics of transportation of the Tajik Railway (TSR) is shown, which displays that most of its sections are classified as low-intensity ones. The paper proposes methodical principles, setting and qualitative analysis of the task of rationalization of operational work and organization of car flows for international transportation, taking into account the specifics of the Tajik Railway. There is a problem of complex maintenance of the efficiency of operational work in modern conditions based on the synthesis of the tasks of self-management (rational internal operational technology of the Tajik Railway) and coordination tasks (technological interaction with railway administrations of other states). Author substantiated the necessity of solving this problem. Proposed classification of technological restrictions and controlled variables in the performance of transport takes into account methods for changing external conditions for the functioning of the railway landfill and methods for increasing internal efficiency of its operation. The search for the solution of the problem involves direct search of variants along its ordered set with clipping of groups of variants that do not correspond to constraints, with the subsequent finding of compromise control over a set of effective alternatives.

Choosing a high-speed rail vehicle depends on many factors. On the one hand, there are requirements for ensuring the quality of service for passengers, on the other hand, there are constraints resulting from the parameters of available infrastructure. Also a relation of the benefit and financial costs associated with the purchase and the operation of rolling stock is essential. Technical characteristics of vehicles selected for operating a particular system is a compromise between the three groups of requirements. In this article technical parameters of railway infrastructure and rolling stock are classified and then analysed from the TSI requirements point of view.

One of the main tasks in improving management of the transportation process is the transition to enhanced quality of transport service focused on meeting users’ requirements while achieving the most economical results for all the components of the technological process stages. The quality of the services offered by railway transport is gradually becoming an increasingly significant indicator of economic efficiency for both carriers and cargo owners. Customers are ready to buy more and more qualitative services to save time, expand their business, and meet new needs. This necessitates dev elopment of modern approaches to optimizing the use of existing railway infrastructure, including by establishing priorities in organizing traffic. The objective of the research was to study the procedure for establishing dynamic priorities for organizing transit of cargo trains. To achieve this goal, a comparative analysis method, special engineering calculation methods associated with organization of train traffic were used. During the study comparative analysis of main characteristics of a number of world railways was carried out. Following clearly defined strategy of railways of the Russian Federation aimed at customer focus, this article provides preliminary research results, the findings of which revealed the expediency of establishing dynamic priorities for cargo trains transit. It is especially important to implement these approaches in the context of an operational change in the train situation in the event of emergency events on the infrastructure and for a possible reduction in the financial losses of consignors and consignees. The same approaches can rightfully be used on the railway of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The quality parameters of printed sheets should be controlled constantly during the sheet-fed offset printing process. This allows the detection of any problems in the initial stages of the printing process. The final control of the quality of printing sheets will eliminate error products before delivering to the costumers. The results of this control should be analyzed continuously. The total quality management (TQM) is an effective method in controlling, doing statistics, and assessing the errors in the offset printing process. Simultaneously, this method delivers the main errors frequently occurred in the printing process. This paper presents the possibility of using some tools of the TQM method such as Pareto chart, Ishikawa diagram, and 5xWhy to analyze and assess the quality of printing sheets in sheet-fed offset printing. The studied results show that the two main errors of the printed sheets are hickeys (occupied 29 %) and low density (occupied 17%). Moreover, the causes of hickey error are analyzed and shown in this paper.

Abstract Motivated by the huge practical engineering demand for the fundamental understanding of mechanical characteristics of high-speed railway infrastructure, a full-scale multi-functional test platform for high-speed railway track–subgrade system is developed in this paper, and its main functions for investigating the mechanical performance of track–subgrade systems are elaborated with three typical experimental examples. Comprising the full-scale subgrade structure and all the five types of track structures adopted in Chinese high-speed railways, namely the CRTS I, the CRTS II and the CRTS III ballastless tracks, the double-block ballastless track and the ballasted track, the test platform is established strictly according to the construction standard of Chinese high-speed railways. Three kinds of effective loading methods are employed, including the real bogie loading, multi-point loading and the impact loading. Various types of sensors are adopted in different components of the five types of track–subgrade systems to measure the displacement, acceleration, pressure, structural strain and deformation, etc. Utilizing this test platform, both dynamic characteristics and long-term performance evolution of high-speed railway track–subgrade systems can be investigated, being able to satisfy the actual demand for large-scale operation of Chinese high-speed railways. As examples, three typical experimental studies are presented to elucidate the comprehensive functionalities of the full-scale multi-functional test platform for exploring the dynamic performance and its long-term evolution of ballastless track systems and for studying the long-term accumulative settlement of the ballasted track–subgrade system in high-speed railways. Some interesting phenomena and meaningful results are captured by the developed test platform, which provide a useful guidance for the scientific operation and maintenance of high-speed railway infrastructure.

Recent developments in the technology of a modern embedded rail system grant many new possibilities for improving the railway infrastructure. An embedded rail system significantly reduces noise and the dynamical impact affecting both the infrastructure and the rolling stock itself. An embedded rail system may be used for constructing any type of railway infrastructure including high-speed railways. Its attributes are also suitable for modernization of the current steel railway bridges or constructing new structures, where slender bridge decks are required. However, in a railway track equipped with an embedded rail system, stress increments rise due to its restricted expansion movement. This effect is naturally higher when the embedded rail system is placed on a bridge, because of their different deformation possibilities. For a wider use of embedded rail system, examining the interaction behavior between the embedded rail system and the substructure is a matter of essential importance. Furthermore, the nonlinear character of embedded rail system polymer-based components needs to be considered when examining their interaction behavior. Therefore, this paper aims at investigating the nonlinear coupling functions of an embedded rail system under the effects of temperature and load rate. For this purpose, a comprehensive analysis consisting of laboratory experiments, material tests of the embedded rail system components and subsequent numerical validation was performed. Results are concluded in the paper.

The track settlement has a great influence on the safe operation of high-speed trains. The existing track settlement measurement approach requires sophisticated or expensive equipments, and the real-time performance is limited. To address the issue, an ultra-high resolution track settlement detection method is proposed by using millimeter wave radar based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW). Firstly, by constructing the RCS statistical feature data set of multiple objects in the track settlement measurement environment, a directed acyclic graph-support vector machine (DAG-SVM) based method is designed to solve the problem of track recognition in multi-object scenes. Then, the adaptive chirp-z-transform (ACZT) algorithm is used to estimate the distance between the radar and the track surface, which realizes automatic real-time track settlement detection. An experimental platform has been constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the accuracy of track classification and identification is at least 95%, and the accuracy of track settlement measurement exceeds 0.5 mm, which completely meets the accuracy requirements of the railway system.

In the context of growing competition between rail transport and other transport types, there is a need to improve the transportation process. In modern conditions, railway transport is the main link in the logistics chain of moving goods from the shipper to the receiver. The efficiency of the railway transport complex can be improved by using logistics principles in the organization of local work on the network sections. In this study, we suggest ways to solve the problem of improving the quality of service for freight owners and the efficiency of organizing local work, which is relevant for railways. To make decisions aimed at improving the efficiency of the organization of local work, a procedure for determining the costs of organizing and promoting local trains was developed, taking into account the costs on maintaining the railway infrastructure. Not only the operational activity of the railways, but also the quality of transport customers service, compliance with the regulatory deadlines for cargo delivery, depends on the choice of the optimal option for organizing local car traffic into trains and their promotion along the section. The option is selected by comparing the costs for each of the possible options for organizing local car traffic into trains and moving them along the section.
