Concrete railway sleeper has been used in Indonesia since about 1990s. It has more advantage that is less maintenance, stabile, good quality, shapeable, onsite raw material, and higher loading ability [9-10, 20 - 22]. But It is prone to damage such as cracking and breaking during construction, so it is often thrown away as a solid waste that can contaminate the land and reduce soil fertility. Therefore, it should be utilized in order to be more useful that is used as recycle aggregate. The concrete waste that is taken from broken concrete railway sleeper will be crush as an aggregate as raw material in the concrete to substitute part or all of the normal concrete. It is called recycled aggregate and concrete that is made from recycled aggregate is called recycled concrete. Base on the testing of raw material, the recycled aggregate can be met to the specification as ASTM [1], so it can be used for concrete raw material. Recycled concrete compressive strength result lower the normal concrete compressive strength in the same initial strength design. The strength value of recycled concrete is decrease about 1 17% for 25 MPa and 10 18% for 30 MPa. It is also happened to tensile strength of recycled concrete that decrease about 2 13 % for 25 MPa and 7 22 % for 30 MPa.

In this rapid industrialised world, recycling construction material plays an important role to preserve the natural resources. In this research, recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) from site-tested concrete specimens were used. These consist of 28-days concrete cubes after compression test obtained from a local construction site. These concrete cubes are crushed to suitable size and reused as recycled coarse aggregate. The amount of recycled concrete aggregate used in this research is approximately 200 kg. Many researchers state that recycled aggregates are only suitable for non-structural concrete application. This research, however, shows that the recycled aggregates that are obtained from site-tested concrete specimen make good quality concrete. The compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is found to be higher than the compressive strength of normal concrete. Recycled aggregate concrete is in close proximity to normal concrete in terms of split tensile strength, flexural strength and wet density. The slump of recycled aggregate concrete is low and that can be improved by using saturated surface dry (SSD) coarse aggregate.

Increasing amount of construction waste and, concrete remnants, in particular pose a serious problem. Concrete waste exist in large amounts, do not decay and need long time for disintegration. Therefore, in this work old demolished concrete is crashed and recycled to produce recycled concrete aggregate which can be reused in new concrete production. The effect of using recycled aggregate on concrete compressive strength has been experimentally investigated; silica fume admixture also is used to improve recycled concrete aggregate compressive strength. The main parameters in this study are recycled aggregate and silica fume admixture. The percent of recycled aggregate ranged from (0-100) %. While the silica fume ranged from (0-10) %. The experimental results show that the average concrete compressive strength decreases from 30.85 MPa to 17.58 MPa when the recycled aggregate percentage increased from 0% to 100%. While, when silica fume is used the concrete compressive strength increase again to 29.2 MPa for samples with 100% of recycled aggregate.

Abstract. Recycled aggregate—rural building material wastes pretreated by cement mortar—are applied into concrete with different replacement rates: 0, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Results from measurements of compressive strength, cleavage tensile strength, mass loss after fast freeze-thaw cycles, and compressive strength loss indicate that a different recycled aggregate replacement rate certainly influences concrete mechanical properties and frost resistance. Recycled aggregate replacement rates less than 75% performs better than common concrete. Data from the 100% replacement rate is worse than that of rates less than 75% but still satisfy the general demands of GB standard on C30 concrete.

This research aimed to utilize Anadara Granosa (Blood clam shell) clamshell waste as a new innovation in concrete technology and to investigate the effect of Anadara Granosa clamshell powder utilization as an aggregate substitution on the concrete compressive strength. The sample size was made of cylinders with a size of 10 cm x 20 cm with variations of clamshell powder 10%, 20% and 30% from the fine aggregate volume then soaked for 28 days as per the method of the Indonesian National Standard. The evaluation results exhibited that the slump value exceeded the slump value of normal concrete with a slump value of 0% = 160 mm, 10% = 165 mm, 20% = 180 mm and 30% = 180 mm. Additionally, it was found that the concrete compressive strength obtained post 28 days were 20.78 Mpa, 21.95 Mpa, 21.17 Mpa and 24.28 Mpa for normal concrete (0%), substitution concrete (10%), substitution concrete (20%) and substitution concrete (30%), respectively. Leading on from these results, it was concluded that the increment of Anadara Granosa clamshell powder substitution led to the increase of concrete compressive strength test.

Perumpung (Eulalia japonica) is a wild plant that usually grows on the banks of river. The locals consider this plant as a waste/pest, but the authors are interested in researching perumpung because they are similar to bamboo, sugarcane and other fibrous plants. In this study, the authors aims to compare the compressive strength of normal concrete with the compressive strength of concrete added with Perumpung ash at 28-days-old K-300. The study used a cube-shaped test object (15 x 15 x 15 cm) with 6 samples for each condition. The total number of test objects is 48, which consists of 8 conditions, namely normal conditions and 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 17.5% and 20% addition of perumpung ash by cement weight. The results obtained that the compressive strength of 28-days-old concrete under normal conditions was 316,060 kg/cm2 and the addition of 5% ash was 331.583 kg/cm2, 7.5% was 337.181 kg/cm2, 10% was 341.813 kg/cm2, 12 ,5% is 347,045 kg/cm2, 15% is 353,889 kg/cm2, 17.5% is 311,160 kg/cm2 and 20% is 298.44 kg/cm2. From the results above it can be concluded that the addition of 15% Perumpung Ash to the concrete mixture increases the maximum characteristic concrete compressive strength by 353.889 kg/cm2.

The reuse of recycled crushed concrete aggregate (RCCA) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) can provide a sustainable solution for the disposal of C&D waste materials instead of sending them to landfills. More importantly, it will conserve energy and reduce environmental concerns. Several states in the USA have been using RCCA and RAP as base materials for years, focusing on the quality of the recycled materials. The structure of Recycled Aggregate (RA) is more complex than that of Natural Aggregate (NA). RAs have old mortar adhered on them that forms a porous surface at the interfacial transition Zone (ITZ) and prevents new cement mix from bonding strongly with the aggregates. The objective of this study was to correlate microstructural properties such as microporosity, inter and intra aggregate pores with the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of RAP and RCCA molds, mixed at different proportions. In this paper, the quantity of micropores and their effect on the strength of mixed materials is used as the basis of microstructural analysis of recycled concrete and reclaimed asphalt. Microstructural properties obtained from analyzing scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were correlated with unconfined compressive strength. Intra-aggregate and interaggregate pores were studied for different ratios of cement treated mixture of RAP and RCCA. The results show that addition of RAP considerably increases the number of pores in the mixture, which eventually causes reduction in unconfined compressive strength. In addition, significant morphological and textural changes of recycled aggregates were observed by SEM image analysis.

Experimental work was carried out to develop information about mechanical properties of recycled concrete (RC) in marine environment. By using the seawater and dry-wet circulation to simulate the marine environment, specimens of RC were tested with different replacement percentages of 0%, 30%, and 60% after immersing in seawater for 4, 8, 12, and 16 months, respectively. Based on the analysis of the stress-strain curves (SSCs) and compressive strength, it is revealed that RC’ peak value and elastic modulus decreased with the increase of replacement percentage and corroding time in marine environment. And the failure of recycled concrete was speeded up with more obvious cracks and larger angles of 65° to 85° in the surface when compared with normal concrete. Finally, the grey model (GM) with equal time intervals was constructed to investigate the law of compressive strength of recycled concrete in marine environment, and it is found that the GM is accurate and feasible for the prediction of RC compressive strength in marine environment.
