High school entrance exam system evaluation from the perspective of mathematics teachers

The aim of this study was to examine the opinions of secondary school math teachers regarding the examination system for the transition to high school which was implemented for the first time in 2017-2018 academic year in Turkey. The research was conducted in the second semester of 2018-2019 academic year, a semi-structured interview form was used as data collection tool. In addition, the sample of the study consisted of 30 math branch teachers working in central secondary schools across a province in Eastern Anatolia. The interview form consisted of 6 open-ended questions prepared by the researchers after receiving expert opinions. Content analysis method was used in analyzing the data. As a result of findings, it was understood that while some of the teachers had positive opinions about this new exam, some others had negative thoughts.

The aim of this research is to conduct a comparative analysis of the mobile learning trends of students of the physical education teaching department studying in The Republic of Kosovo and Russia. In this research, causal comparative research method was used. The study group consists of 40 students studying physical education teaching at various universities in Kosovo and Russia in the 2020-2021 academic year. A total of 80 students participated in the study. The research data were collected by the semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher and the data was analyzed by content analysis method. The research results reveal that students studying in both countries have a high mobile learning tendency. In addition, students from both countries have similarly defined the advantages and disadvantages of mobile device use in education.

The aim of the present study was to determine the views of pre-service teachers on artificial intelligence. In the present qualitative study, conducted with the phenomenology design, that data were collected from 94 pre-service teachers attending different departments at Manisa Celal Bayar University, Faculty of Education during the 2018-2019 academic year fall semester in Turkey. Data were collected with semi-structured interview form and written interview form, developed by the author. Collected data were analyzed by using content analysis method and classified under themes. Analyses demonstrated that pre-service teachers assigned different meanings to artificial intelligence, felt basically negative emotions for artificial intelligence, and did not want to live in a world ruled by artificial intelligence. Furthermore, it was found that pre-service teachers considered that artificial intelligence could have both several benefits and risks, and it might have both positive and negative effects on education. Based on the study findings, various recommendations were presented for future studies and implementations on the topic.

Scientific research projects competitions for high school students have been held by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) since 1969. Whereas only projects on science were taken into the scope of competition for long years, the projects appropriate to the interdisciplinary approach such as social sciences projects and values education have been started to be included beside science broadening the range since 2000s. In projects, it has been aimed to encourage students studying at high school grade for carrying out studies on basic, social and applied sciences, directing their studies and providing contribution upon the development of current scientific studies. The required qualification is projects’ being originated and developed from own knowledge, skill and original thoughts of the students, and being completed by the support of a counselor.Geography has started to be included in scientific project competitions since 2011. In this research, it was aimed to reveal the importance of secondary education students’ scientific project competitions upon their gaining a scientific point of view depending upon the branch of geography. In the research, case study design as one of the qualitative research methods was used. The study group of the research included 38 geography teachers carrying on their duties in Nevsehir province in 2015-2016 academic year. Semi-structured interview technique was used as data collection tool, and the data were analyzed using content analysis method. Obtained quantitative data were digitized, their frequency and percentage were obtained and interpreted.In the research, it was concluded that participating into scientific project competitions was very beneficial in terms of students, developed viewpoint of students in terms of various aspects, most of the geography teachers considered that the institutions they carried on their duties were adequate for students’ developing projects, teachers considered themselves competent for guiding students during the process of preparing the project, and preparing a project provided significant benefits and experiences for the future of students.

The aim of this research is to examine the roles and competencies of school principals working in project schools in terms of accountability, based on the views of school principals. This is a qualitative research which is based on the phenomenology design. The working group is chosen among the most well-known project schools in Istanbul using the maximum variation sampling method. Interviews were held with 12 school principals working at the Science High School, Anatolian High School, Social Sciences High School and Anatolian Religious High Schools in the 2019-2020 academic year. The data obtained from the interviews are coded using content analysis method and different 3 themes such as supervision, the functioning of education and integrity are obtained. In this context, it is indicated that project school principals felt themselves accountable most since they have a right to determine the managers and teachers they want to work with. It came to the conclusion that school principals cooperate with their internal and external stakeholders in all matters for the development of their schools.

In this study, it is aimed to examine the opinions of class teachers about digital game-based teaching. The model of the research, which adopts the qualitative research approach, is the case study. Within the scope of the purpose of the study, opinions were obtained on a voluntary basis from the class teachers selected by the criterion sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods. The participants of the research are 30 class teachers working under the Ministry of National Education in the 2020-2021 academic year. A semi-structured interview form was used as a data collection tool. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis method. In line with the findings obtained, conclusions and recommendations have been given.

This research aimed to find out students’ perception of utilizing podcasts in learning speaking skills. The researchers used a qualitative approach and basic interpretative design to explore students’ perceptions. Three students were involved in this study. They are first-grade students of the vocational high school in the academic year 2019/2020. The data was gathered from the reflective journal and semi-structured interview. To obtain the data, the researchers analyzed it by thematic analysis. Results of this research, researchers classified three aspects that are the instruction in the podcast, the benefits of the podcast, and the use of podcast. The findings illustrated that students had a positive perception of the utilization of podcasts in learning speaking. Students perceive that podcast is interesting media because it has many contents or topics that they can listen and practice their speaking skill whenever they want. They also agree that podcast is beneficial for speaking achievement, for example, students can increase their vocabularies and word pronunciation.

It is a common goal to try to educate students as natural users of language, as emphasized by the studies on learning English today and the recently renewed 2017- 2018 curriculum in Turkey. In this respect, the learning of language based on four basic skills is considered to bring the importance of these skills is emerging. This study is a qualitative study that determines the teachers’ opinions on the problems they encounter in the process of teaching four basic skills. At this qualitative study in the 2017-2018 academic year, teachers were chosen by the criterion sampling method, face-to-face interviews were conducted with eight English teachers working in a city of Turkey. The research was conducted in a case study design in a holistic multi-state pattern. Semi-structured interview form was used as data collection tool. Data was analyzed by content analysis method. Teachers’ opinions on the subject were discussed according to sub-problems and comments and suggestions were made.

The objective of this study was to obtain information about the quality of high school National Standard School Exam (USBN) questions in Pontianak in 2018/2019 academic year. To achieve this objective, the information excavated includes (a) the process of compiling questions (b) the test of the feasibility of the questions (c) the eligibility requirements of the questions (d) administering the exam (e) the examination system of the examination scripts (f) the reporting system, and (g) the correlation of values report cards and high school USBN grades in Pontianak with UN scores. This study employed a descriptive method. The selection of high school samples used as data sources was done by random sampling and purposive sampling. Data were gathered through documentation, interviews, and questionnaires. The data were then analyzed with descriptive statistics and correlational studies. The results showed that, in the high school USBN questions in Pontianak City, (1) there were still stages in the process of drafting "not done", (2) empirical tests before the compilation of the final questions "had not been done," (3) administering the "already" applied exams as UN procedures, (4) manuscript examination system is implemented manually, (5) reporting of exam results by respective subject teachers, and (6) correlation of report card grades and high school USBN scores in Pontianak with "mostly" low "UN scores "and even in certain" negative "schools. It means that report cards and USBN scores cannot be used to predict UN results.

The aim of this study is to examine the opinions of social studies teacher candidates about smoking addiction. For the purpose of the study, phenomenological research design, which is one of the designs of qualitative research method, was used. The study group consisted of 20 volunteer teacher candidates (10 male and 10 female) who have been studying at Usak University Faculty of Education in the 2019-2020 academic year and who have been smoking for the last year. Data were collected with a semi-structured interview form. The interview form, which is a data collection tool, was prepared based on the opinions of three experts. 6 open-ended questions were asked to the participants according to expert opinions. The data was analyzed by content analysis.
