The main objective of research "BoLA and disease" is the need to develop approaches and obtain reliable criteria which would allow to judge about animal genetic predisposition to the disease and about change of its immunological status in the development of pathological process. Genes of class II of main histocompatibility complex have the greatest association to diseases. Now 54 alleles of BoLA-DRB3.2 have been described by PCR-RFLP. The high level of allelic diversity of the gene is caused by necessity of tying a wide range of foreign antigens, which leads to the possibility of its use as a marker for various diseases of cattle. This article presents the results of detecting alleles of BoLA-DRB3.2 gene, which have the expressed relationship with the disease of Ukrainian Black-and-White Dairy cows on necrobacteriosis and can be used as DNA markers of this disease. Diagnosis of necrobacteriosis was set at the basis of clinical, pathological and epizootic data and laboratory results. The blood samples were taken from 114 cows, 43 of which had the disease. Spectrum of alleles of exon 2 of BoLA-DRB3 gene was studied by PCR. 54 alleles were determined in total. Alleles, which have a close relationship with susceptibility or resistance to necrobacteriosis and can be used as DNA markers, were established on indicators of frequency and relative risk (RR) with test on Pearson criterion (χ2). 32 alleles were determined in the experimental group of animals. There were seven alleles with a frequency greater than 5%. The most often determined allele of BoLA-DRB3.2 was *24. It is present in 18% of the animals. And often determined alleles were *22 (7,9%) and *28 (7,5%). Limit higher than 5% was for alleles *08 and * 09 (6,1%), *03 and *16 (5,3%). The lowest frequency of detection was for alleles *06, *25, *31 and *41 (0,4%). Alleles of BoLA-DRB3.2*24 (16,9%), *22 (10,6%), *28 (8,5%), *03 (7,7%), *08 and *10 (6,3%) were often determined in the group of healthy cows. Alleles *06, *14, *19, *25 and *51 weren’t determined in this group. The animals with necrobacteriosis had often alleles *24 (19,8%), *16 (12,8%), *23 (8,1%), *8, *10 and *28 (5,8%). Alleles *01, *11, *21, *31 and *41 weren’t in general. In the three experimental groups 8 alleles were determined with a frequency of over 5% (all herd, healthy and diseased animals respectively). There are four alleles among them presented in all three samples: *08, *10, *24 and *28. Two "informative" alleles (*03 and *22) were found in every the 20th animal simultaneously in two groups of cows – healthy animals and in the total sample. Also two "informative" alleles *16 and *23 were simultaneously in the diseased cows and in the total sample. 11 alleles have significant association with susceptibility or resistance to necrobacteriosis on criterion of relative risk. There are 4 alleles *16 (24,1%), * 18 (5,25%), *25 (5,04%) and *23 (4,41%), indicating the relationship with disease (RR ≥ 2). Four alleles of BoLA-DRB3.2 are significant on criterion χ2 and have a sufficient test of validity for the studied biological objects. Allele *16 shows a very high level test of validity P = 0,999 (χ2 = 16,6). Three alleles *03 (4,93), *23 (4,86) and *22 (4,03) have a minimum acceptable test of validity for χ2 for P = 0,95. 8 alleles: *3 (-7,7), *21 (- ,44), *36 (-3,87), *22 (-3,57), *12 (-3,18), *1 and *11 (-3,13) and *26 (- 2,51) indicate neсrobaсteriosis resistance (RR ≤ -2). Allele would be associated with the disease if the condition performed RR ≥ 2 і χ2> 3,8. There are two such alleles: *16 (RR = 24,1; χ2 = 16,6), *23 (RR = 4,41; χ2 = 4,86). Also "negative" alleles on risk of disease manifest are *18 (5,25) and *25 (5,08), but with insufficient validity of Pearson criterion (respectively 2,45 and 1,66). Allele would be associated with the resistance to disease if the condition performed RR ≤ -2 і χ2> 3,8. There are 2 alleles associated with resistance to necrobacteriosis: *03 (RR = -7,7; χ2 = 4,93) and *22 (RR = -3,57; χ2 = 4,03). Also six alleles (* 01, * 11, * 12, * 21, * 26 and * 36) detected resistance to neсrobacteriosis on high level of relative risk, but with insufficient validity. It should be noted, that allele BoLA-DRB3.2*22, which proved to be a "positive" marker of resistance to necrobacteriosis, has a strong correlation with resistance to mastitis in cows of Ukrainian Black-and-White Dairy (RR = -2,52; χ2 = 5,02) and Ukrainian Red-and-White Dairy breeds (RR = -4,66; χ2 = 11,11) in previous studies. The study of the distribution of alleles of exon 2 of BoLA-DRB3 gene at the Ukrainian Black-and-White Dairy cows, which were healthy and diseased by necrobacteriosis, revealed the alleles which had a close relationship with penchant to this disease (* 16 and * 23) and two alleles associated with resistance (* 03 and * 22). Given the fact that the research was conducted directly on animal blood DNA the detected alleles BoLA-DRB3 should be used as DNA markers in the analysis of susceptibility or resistance to necrobacteriosis of cows.

There is a high level of diversity among lemons [Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f. (2n = 2x = 18)] in Sicily, where each growing area has a wide range of landraces mostly derived from bud mutation. Because this variability represents an important resource for future breeding programs and genetic improvement, the relationships among the principal 36 accessions of Sicilian lemon, belonging to three different cultivars (Femminello, Monachello, and Lunario), were examined by intersimple sequence repeat and random amplified polymorphic DNA markers. Three ‘Femminello’ accessions from nearby Italian regions were also examined to study the genetic flow from the continent. The disputed case of the accession ‘Eureka Messina lemon’ was also examined, using ‘Frost Eureka’ as a control. Our results confirmed the extreme polymorphic nature of the three principal Sicilian cultivars and the presence of a wide range of different genotypes. Twenty-two Sicilian genotypes were recognized as unique accessions, reflecting the richness of the lemon germplasm present in Sicily. Each growing area showed the presence of several genetically different landraces, probably preserved by genetic isolation, whereas the continental accessions appeared extremely similar to the island genotypes, showing an exchange of germplasm from the island to the continent.

Landrace tea populations are important recourses for germplasm conservation and selection of elite tea clone cultivars. To understand their genetic diversity and use them effectively for breeding, two traditional landrace tea populations, Beichuan Taizicha (BCTZ) and Nanjiang Dayecha (NJDY), localized to northern Sichuan, were evaluated for morphological characters, simple sequence repeat (SSR)–based DNA markers and the contents of biochemical components. A wide range of morphological variation and a moderately high level of DNA polymorphism were observed from both BCTZ and NJDY. NJDY had on average, bigger leaves, larger flowers, higher total catechins (TCs), and greater gene diversity (GD) than BCTZ. Interestingly, samples from BCTZ had a wide range in the ratio of galloylated catechins to nongalloylated catechins (G/NG) (1.83–8.12, cv = 48.8%), whereas samples from NJDY were more variable in total amino acid (TAA) content (25.3–50.8 mg·g−1 dry weight) than those from BCTZ. We concluded that the two Camellia sinensis landrace populations are of great interest for both individual selection breeding and scientific studies.

The study hypothesis was that pre-slaughter handling is not conducted in such a way that pigs can be considered humanely slaughtered, nor is it conducive to promoting those properties of fresh meat that could enhance pork quality. The 1st phase of the investigation was aimed at confirming the present compliance level within the prescribed norms. To this end the importance of stunning induction requirements for effective electrical stunning, the welfare implications relating to the pre-slaughter handling of pigs and the stunning and sticking techniques were investigated. Pre-slaughter welfare of the pigs at the abattoir was found to be influenced at the outset by the origin and type of pig slaughtered, the daily throughput range of pigs and the type of abattoir involved. A disappointing pre-arrival aspect was that deficiencies in road motor vehicles were observed while off-loading pigs. Through poor design or lack of maintenance, another factor that hampered free movement of pigs was the off-loading facilities. The nature of animal behaviour in the pens, in the passages and when going into the stunning area was directly related to the pig handling efficiency and to the nature and extent of design and maintenance problems with equipment. None of the abattoirs had a well designed in-feed to a well planned stunning area / facility, and a very high level of pig pre-slaughter stress prevailed. The optimum position of the electrodes is virtually impossible to attain under practical conditions and the practice of repeat application of electrical stunning is common. Of the total sample size (n = 1175), 34% were difficult to shackle, 90% of these being from the abattoirs tending to slaughter more routinely a wide range of different sized pigs. In this survey 149 pigs (13 %) required more than a single sticking attempt to bleed out properly, considerably higher than in other published reports.

Aim. The aim of our work was to investigate the interbreed differentiation of Ukrainian Red-and-Motley and Black-and-White dairy cows based on the results of the analysis of allelic and genotypic polymorphism of DNA microsatellites. Methods. Genotyping of 88 DNA samples of two most numerous dairy cattle breeds in Ukraine – Ukrainian Red-and-Motley and Black-and-White dairy cows – was conducted by 10 loci, recommended by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG). The analysis of allelic and genotypic polymorphism was performed using parametric and non-parametric methods. Results. Informative value of DNA microsatellites as markers of genetic processes, which take place in the populations of domestic animals, was assessed. Conclusions. The investigated breeds demonstrate a reliable level of genetic differentiation with a high level of similarity.

Affective disorders are widespread among student youth. Anxiety and depression are the most common disorders, but thorough diagnostics reveals other emotional disturbances as well, which may imply bipolar disorder (BD). BD is associated with a wide range of adverse outcomes; therefore, it is important to identify masking symptoms that predict the onset and course of BD. One of the predictors of bipolar disorder is the temperament. The present study aimed to analyze the entire spectrum of affective disorders and determine the correlation between them and the affective temperaments. The study involved 106 medical students. They completed the following autoquestionnaires: PHQ-9, ASRM, GAD-7, ShARS, HCL-32 and TEMPS-A. Conducting analyses, the results of the HCL-32 questionnaire were statistically significantly correlating with the results of GAD-7 (p = 0.034) and the hyperthymic (p = 0.000), cyclothymic (p = 0.000) and excitable (p = 0.004) temperaments according to TEMPS-A. When dividing the total sample into two groups, based on the HCL-32 questionnaire data, a higher incidence of depressive disorders on the PHQ-9 scale (p = 0.023) was found among respondents who scored more than 14 points on the HCL-32. Almost half of the respondents showed a high level of hypomania, which implies a high risk of developing bipolar spectrum disorders. A statistically significant relationship between hypomania and personality traits was found with hyperthymic, cyclothymic and excitable temperaments. It is necessary to diagnose such disorders in time to improve the social functioning of the students.

Little information is available on the maternal–embryonic relationships among sharks. Birdbeak dogfish (Deania calcea) has been described as ovoviviparous, but this term comprises a wide range of forms on how the embryos are nourished including lecithotrophy and matrotrophy. To evaluate the maternal–embryonic relationship in birdbeak dogfish we have analysed chemical features (fatty acid composition and mercury (Hg) levels) and biological characteristics (egg and embryo dry weight variation, uterus characterization). Monounsaturated fatty acids were the dominant fatty acids in eggs while polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were the dominant fatty acids in both pregnant females and embryos. Significant differences were found among eggs, embryos and pregnant females for all fatty acids groups with the exception of saturated fatty acids for embryos and pregnant females. The principal components analysis revealed that embryos are particularly related to n-6 PUFA and pregnant females with n-3 PUFA. A close relationship exists between the Hg level of pregnant females and the Hg level of their embryos which indicates that there is a transfer of mercury from maternal sources. The comparison of the mean dry weight between eggs and embryos showed a gain of 3.8% obtained in the embryos. Histological sections of the uteri of pregnant females showed a high level of both superficial and inner vascularization in the uterine villi as well as the presence of secretor cells. Until now, the importance of this species maternal contribution and interference for the embryos development has never been documented. However, the biological and chemical results observed in the present work show that there is a matrotrophic strategy for the birdbeak dogfish.

The Major Histocompatability Complex (MHC) determines the immune response to pathogens, and its genes are promising candidates for the search of associations with diseases. A special role is played by BoLA-DRB3 gene, the product of which directly participates in the binding of alien antigens and conditions the specificity of the immune response. The second exon of this gene codes β1-domain of class II antigens, which is necessary for binding a broad spectrum of alien antigens. Exon 2 of BoLA-DRB3 gene is extremely polymorphic, giving the possibility to search the associations of its alleles with various diseases. The article provides the results of the study on polymorphism of alleles of BoLA-DRB3.2 gene for detection of its associations with sensitivity to fusobacteriosis (necrobacteriosis) of cows. The survey was performed using PCR-RFLP method with DNA of blood from 176 cows of two herds of Ukrainian black-and-white dairy breed. As a result of the studies, in the first herd, 25 BoLA-DRB3.2 alleles were found. In the selections of nectobacteriosis susceptible and resistant cows, we found 22 and 21 variants respectively. In the second herd, in the general selection and group of healthy animals, 27 alleles were typed, and 22 in the group of susceptible cows. BoLA-DRB3.2*22 allele was the commonest in both herds in both general selections and groups of nectobacteriosis-resistant cows. In the selection of susceptible animals, the commonest was the variant BoLA-DRB3.2*16. We determined statistically significant associations of BoLA-DRB3.2 alleles with sensitivity to nectobacteriosis of cattle. BoLA-DRB3.2*03 and *22 alleles associate with nectobacteriosis-resistant, while *16 and *23 – with nectobacteriosis-susceptible cows of the both studied groups. Also, in the first herd, another allele was found – *24, indicating close relationship with the disease. The studies of polymorphism of BoLA-DRB3 gene expand the knowledge about genetic peculiarities of the Ukrainian black-and-white dairy breed. The identified molecular-genetic markers could be useful for breeders whose work is oriented towards the formation of herds which are resistant to diseases of the limbs in cattle.

Dullstroom-Emnotweni is the highest town in South Africa. Cold and misty, it is situated in the eastern Highveld, halfway between the capital Pretoria/Tswane and the Mozambique border. Alongside the main road of the white town, 27 restaurants provide entertainment to tourists on their way to Mozambique or the Kruger National Park. The inhabitants of the black township, Sakhelwe, are remnants of the Southern Ndebele who have lost their land a century ago in wars against the whites. They are mainly dependent on employment as cleaners and waitresses in the still predominantly white town. Three white people from the white town and three black people from the township have been interviewed on their views whether democracy has brought changes to this society during the past 20 years. Answers cover a wide range of views. Gratitude is expressed that women are now safer and HIV treatment available. However, unemployment and poverty persist in a community that nevertheless shows resilience and feeds on hope. While the first part of this article relates the interviews, the final part identifies from them the discourses that keep the black and white communities from forming a group identity that is based on equality and human dignity as the values of democracy.

The article presents the genetic characteristic of the Chukchi reindeer breed. The object of the study was of the Chukchi reindeer. In recent years, the number of reindeer of the Chukchi breed has declined sharply. Reduced reindeer numbers could lead to biodiversity loss. The Chukchi breed of deer has good meat qualities, has high germination viability and is adapted in adverse tundra conditions of Yakutia. Herding of the Chukchi breed of deer in Yakutia are engaged only in the Nizhnekolymsky district. There are four generic communities and the largest of which is the agricultural production cooperative of nomadic tribal community «Turvaurgin», which was chosen to assess the genetic processes of breed using microsatellite markers: Rt6, BMS1788, Rt 30, Rt1, Rt9, FCB193, Rt7, BMS745, C 143, Rt24, OheQ, C217, C32, NVHRT16, T40, C276. It was found that microsatellite markers have a wide range of alleles and generally have a high informative value for identifying of genetic differences between animals and groups of animal. The number of identified alleles is one of the indicators of the genetic diversity of the population. The total number of detected alleles was 127. The Chukchi breed of deer is characterized by a high level of heterozygosity, and the random crossing system prevails over inbreeding in the population. On average, there were 7.9 alleles (Na) per locus, and the mean number of effective alleles (Ne) was 4.1. The index of fixation averaged 0.001. The polymorphism index (PIC) ranged from 0.217 to 0.946, with an average of 0.695.

The main goal of dairy breeds selection should be improving breeding and productive qualities of animals under modern conditions. The majority of farms, using native breeds to produce milk, has created optimal conditions for keeping and feeding, selection and matching, growing of replacements etc. Further improvement of created native dairy breeds for economically useful traits occurs at total use of purebred Holstein bulls (semen) of foreign selection. In order to realistically assess milk productivity (milk yield, fat content in milk and fat yield) of Ukrainian Black-and-White and Red-and-White Dairy cows should be conducted a comparative analysis of Holstein cows under the same conditions of feeding and keeping. It was established that Ukrainian Red-and-White Dairy cows were characterized by the highest milk yields for 305 days of all lactations, taken into account, the among three investigated breeds. Their milk yield during the first lactation was 5933 kg of milk, during the second – 6393 kg, the third – 6391 kg and during higher lactation – 6650 kg. Ukrainian Black-and-White Dairy cows were second by milk yield (except for the second lactation), during the first lactation – 5932 kg of milk, the third – 6462 kg and higher – 6541 kg, and Holstein cows were third, during the first lactation – 5794 kg of milk, the second – 6381 kg, the third – 6335 kg and higher – 6469 kg. The fat content was almost the same and varied within 3.49-3.58% in milk of Ukrainian Red-and-White Dairy cattle, 3.50-3.60% in milk of Ukrainian Black-and-White Dairy cattle and 3.50-3.56% in Holsteins’ milk. The difference between the breeds was within 0.01-0.04%. All the investigated breeds had predominance in fat yield for three lactations over standards of these breeds: Ukrainian Red-and-White Dairy cows from 75.1 to 93.4 kg, Ukrainian Black-and-White Dairy cows – 75.1-89.0 kg respectively and Holstein cows – 41.9-60.2 kg. It was found different level of positive correlation between milk yield and fat yield in all the cases and high correlation (r = 0.604-0.921, P < 0.001) in five cases (41.7%) Negative correlation coefficients indicate that selection of animals to higher milk yield in the herd will decrease the second trait – fat content in milk. Positive and highly significant correlation between milk yield and fat yield indicates that selection of cows in the herd to higher milk yields will increase fat yield. It was revealed that bulls were among the factors impacted the milk productivity (milk yield, fat content, fat yield) of three investigated breeds. So, the force (η²x) of father’s impact on milk yield was15.4-47.9%, fat content – 22.0-43.4% and fat yield – 14.9-47.7% taking into account a lactation and a breed. The force of lines impact (η²x) was second; it was on milk yield 6.1-24.5%, fat content – 4.1-17.1 and fat yield – 5.8-23.5%. The force of breeds impact (η²x) was last; it was on milk yield 0.3-2.9%, fat content – 0.2-0.3% and fat yield – 0.6-2.7%. So, the comparative studies of milk productivity of Ukrainian Red-and-White and Black-and-White Dairy cattle with Holsteins indicate that under similar conditions of feeding and keeping, these native breeds can compete with Holstein cattle. The milk yield for 305 days of higher lactation was 6650 kg of milk in Ukrainian Red-and-White Dairy cows, 6541 kg in Ukrainian Black-and-White Dairy cows and 6469 kg in Holsteins. It was found the inverse correlation r = -0.025-0.316 between milk yield and fat content in milk in most cases. Selection and matching of animals in the herd should be carried out simultaneously on these traits. It was found positive repeatability of milk yields between the first and second, the third and higher lactations (rs = 0.036-0.741), indicating the reliability of forecasting increase in milk productivity during the next lactations in all herd. Bulls have the greatest impact (η²x) on milk productivity among the factors taken into account: milk yield – 15.4-47.9%, fat content in milk – 22.0-43.4% and fat yield – 14.9-47.7%.
