Cotton growers of Bangladesh usually cultivate eleven varieties of cotton and abruptly use chemical insecticides for controlling pests. In this study we evaluated the performances of three extensively cultivated varieties (CB9, CB10 and SR05) under economic threshold level (ETL) based insecticide sprayed and non-sprayed conditions. Results showed that number of bolls per plant and yield of the varieties differ significantly and there was found significant difference between the experimental conditions. Our study showed that the variety SR05 produced significantly higher number of bolls (40.5±6.6 /plant) and yield (2498.3±18.9 kg/ha) compared to CB9 and CB10, whereas CB9 produced higher number of seed (36.9±3.7/boll) and seed index (83.4±0.9 g/100 seed) under ETL based insecticide sprayed condition. The ginning out tern (GOT%) and seed germination percentage of the studied varieties did not differ to a significant level. Overall fitness of the varieties indicated that SR05 possesses comparatively better performances for commercial production of cotton in Bangladesh.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/on.v9i1.5728

Successful invasive plant eradication is rare, because the methods used target the adult stage, not taking into account the development capacity of a large seedbank. Heating by microwave was considered, because it offers a means to quickly reach the temperature required for loss of seed viability and inhibition of germination. Previous results were not encouraging, because homogeneous and deep-wave penetration was not achieved, and the various parameters that can affect treatment effectiveness were incompletely addressed. This study aimed to determine, under experimental conditions, the best microwave treatment to inhibit invasive species seed germination in terms of power (2, 4, 6 kW) and duration (2, 4, 8 min) of treatments and depending on soil moisture (10%, 13%, 20%, 30%) and seed burial depth (2, 12 cm). Three invasive species were tested: Bohemian knotweed, giant goldenrod, and jimsonweed. The most effective treatments required relatively high power and duration (2kW8min, 4kW4min, 6kW2min, and 6kW4min; 4kW8min and 6kW8min were not tested for technical reasons), and their effectiveness diminished with increasing soil moisture with germination percentage between 0% and 2% for the lowest soil moisture, 0% and 56% for intermediate soil moisture, and 27% and 68% in control treatments. For the highest soil moisture, only 2kW8min and 4kW4min reduced germination percentage between 2% and 19%. Occasionally, germination of seeds located at the 12-cm depth was more strongly affected. Giant goldenrod seeds were the most sensitive, probably due to their small size. Results are promising and justify further experiments before developing a field microwave device to treat large volumes of soil infested by invasive seed efficiently and with reasonable energy requirements. Other types of soil, in terms of texture and organic matter content, should be tested in future experiments, because these factors influence soil water content and, consequently, microwave heating.

Capsicum annum is commercially cultivated due to its nutritional and pharmaceutical values. It is particularly important in Malaysia due to its abundant use in daily life food. Although it is warm seasonal plant, its productivity is not high in tropical environment. High seed germination is the prerequisite for good seedling establishment. Present study is conducted to study the varietal response for germination traits in diverse capsicum germplasm.  Five germination traits were focused e.g.  Final germination percentage (FGP), speed of germination (SG), initiation of germination (IG), days to 50% germination (R50) and peak period of germination (GP). Seeds of each variety were kept in triplicate at room temperature using Yoshida medium coupled with photoperiod of 14 hours for two weeks. Mean values for FGP (81%), SG (rate=2), IG (9th day) and R50 (10th day) and GP (12th day) were observed in 93 varieties. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant difference for all germination traits, reflecting that present germplasm is diverse for germination traits. These findings would be useful to improve the germination traits in capsicum hybridization programs.

This investigation documents the key anatomical features in embryo development of Cypripedium formosanum Hayata, in association with the ability of embryos to germinate in vitro, and examines the effects of culture media and seed pretreatments on seed germination. A better understanding of zygotic embryogenesis for the Cypripedium L. species would provide insights into subsequent germination events and aid in the in vitro propagation of these endangered species. In seeds collected at 60 days after pollination (DAP), soon after fertilization, no germination was recorded. The best overall germination was found at 90 DAP (≈70%), at which time early globular to globular embryos with a single-celled suspensors can be observed. After 135 DAP, the seeds germinated poorly. At this time the inner integument shrinks and forms a tight layer, which encloses the embryo, the so-called “carapace.” Using Nile red stain, a cuticular substance was detected in the carapace, which may play a role in the impermeability of the mature seed and may help the seeds survive in the stringent environment. At maturity (after 210 DAP), the embryo proper has an average size of eight cells along its length and six cells across the width. Lipids and proteins are the main storage products within the embryo. To improve seed germination, experiments were conducted to test the suitability of various media and pretreatments of seeds. When different media were used, except for the Harvais medium at 120 DAP, there was no significant difference in seed germination at three different developmental stages tested. Soaking mature seeds in 1% NaOCl or treating them with ultrasound may slightly increase the germination percentage. For seed germination, our results indicate that the timing of seed collection outweighs the composition of medium and the seed pretreatments.

<p><em>Ixora coccinea</em> L. is ornamentally and medicinally important coastal plant also associated with mangroves of Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri district. In present study seeds of <em>I. coccinea</em> were treated with cold water, 50°C  hot water, germinator solution and also 100 ppm, 200 ppm, 500 ppm GA. Germination percentage were measured every day until no germination were observed. Data was analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and significant mean difference in pair of treatments was analysed by using t-Test. Seeds of <em>I. coccinea </em>treated with 100 ppm GA showed highest germination percentage i.e. 90% followed by hot water treated seeds and it  showed 85%  germination.<em> </em>Seeds were treated with GA, Hot water, Germinator, soaking in cold water showed significant difference in between treatments ( p&lt;0.05). Overall results suggest that 100 ppm GA and hot water treatment used for enhance the germination of <em>I. coccinea</em> seeds.</p>

Biological techniques, especially phytoremediation, have long been recognized as cost-effective and environment friendly to eliminate pollutants from soil. This article is based on a study conducted to assess the capability of alfalfa, ryegrass and white clover to remove total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) from soil. The presence of petroleum contamination significantly decreased germination percentage and rate along with biomass of alfalfa and white clover compared to uncontaminated soil. With regards to ryegrass, there was no significant difference in seed germination percentage and biomass, although the presence of petroleum decreased seed germination rate. The results indicated that these plants had effect on TPHs remediation; and removal of TPH from soil was directly related to density levels and time. Therefore, alfalfa and ryegrass in their highest density levels reduced the maximum concentration of TPHs at the end of the experiment by almost 64.41% and 60.36%, respectively, whereas only slight changes were observed in non-vegetated soil.

Smellmelon, an annual invasive weed of soybean production fields in the north of Iran, reproduces and spreads predominately through seed production. This makes seed bank survival and successful germination essential steps in the invasive process. To evaluate the potential of Smellmelon to invade water-stressed environments, laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the effect of desiccation and salinity at different temperatures on seed germination and seedling growth of Cucumis melo. Seeds were incubated at 25, 30, 35 and 40 ºC in the darkness in a solution (0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8, 1 and 1.2 MPa) of a salt (NaCl), and in a solution (0, -2, -4, -6, -8, -10, -12 bar) of PEG-6000 (Polyethylene glycol), in two separate experiments. The results showed that the highest percentage and rate of germination occurred at 35 ºC in salt concentrations of 0, -0.2, -0.4 MPa and PEG concentrations of 0, -2, -4 bar. Increasing the concentration of salt (NaCl) and PEG limited germination, seedling growth and water uptake but increased the sodium content in the seedlings. No significant difference was observed among 0, -0.2 and -0.4 MPa of NaCl and among 0, -2 and -4 bar of PEG concentration at 35 ºC. The negative effects of PEG were more than those of NaCl on germination percentage and germination rate. Increased stress levels lead to reduction of root and shoot length, and SVL of seedlings. Na+ content of seedling decreased with limited seedling growth of C. melo.

The research was conducted during <italic>kharif</italic> seasons of 2008 and 2009. Nineteen genotypes comprising of seventeen <italic>Bt</italic> hybrids, one conventional hybrid and one variety were evaluated for their reaction to sucking insect pests, under unsprayed condition. Observations on sucking pests were recorded at weekly intervals. The highest population of leaf hopper was recorded during 28<sup>th</sup> and 32<sup>nd</sup> standard weeks. The highest mean incidence was recorded in H-1226. Whitefly population remained below economic threshold level (ETL) during 2008 while during 2009 it crossed ETL in RCH 134 BG-II (6.00-6.23 adults/leaf). Mean highest population was recorded in IT-905 <italic>Bt</italic> and RCH-134 BG-II. Leafhopper and whitefly population were significantly and positively correlated with temperature while negatively correlated with rainfall. Among the genotypes, it was observed that there was no significant difference in population of the sucking pests.

Abstract Seeding is the most important and quite challenging stage in seed/TSS cultivation. Plant growth regulator (PGR) seed priming has the potential to enhance the quality of TSS seedlings. The research had been conducted in the greenhouse of Agriculture Faculty, UGM, from February to April 2020. The factorial treatments of shallot cultivars (Tuk-Tuk, Lokananta and Sanren) and seed treatments (soaking seed with GA3 100 ppm and NAA 50 ppm for 12 hours and untreated seeds as control) were assigned in the RCBD with four replications. Each experimental unit was consisted of 728 seeds per cultivar. Both treated and untreated seeds were sown in soil blocks. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and continued with Tukey HSD procedure at α=0.05. The results showed that PGR priming on seeds significantly increased the germination percentage, plant height, leaf number, leaf area, and hypothetical vigor index of the three cultivars at six weeks after sowing. However, there was no significant difference in the fresh weight and dry weight of seedlings. This research implied that soaking seeds in GA3 100 ppm and NAA 50 ppm for 12 hours could improve seed germination and TSS seedling growth. Additional fertilizers are perhaps needed in soil blocks to increase the effect of hormones on the seedlings.

Faidherbia albida is an agroforesrty tree that has the potential of promoting agroforestry establishment in Nigeria. The seeds are glossy due to the presence of wax in the seed coat which prevents easy penetration of water. Thus, this study assessed the effect of different pretreatments (biological, mechanical and chemical) on the germination of F. albida seeds. The treatments include; seeds scarified at the helium, soaked in cold water for 24 hours, soaked in hot water for 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, & 15 minutes and soaked in Conc. H2SO4 for 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes. The result showed that all treatment had uniform germination percentage of 100% but seeds soaked in H2SO4 for 15 min and 10 min had the highest germination value of (65.25) and (65.00) respectively, followed by 15mins soaking in hot water (47.14) while the least germination value was recorded in seeds scarified mechanically (33.31). Analysis of variance revealed that there was no significant difference in the treatments. However, seeds treated with H2SO4 at 15 mins and 10 mins had the best performance in terms of germination value compared with other treatments. Therefore, for optimum and uniform germination, the seed of F. albida seeds should be soak in concentrated H2SO4 for 15 min.

Seed dispersal is a key process in the re-establishment of vegetation on reclaimed lands. The aim of this study was to determine the contributions of the ant species Ectatomma ruidum and Pheidole fallax to seed dispersal and germination on reclaimed lands in the Cerrejón coal mine, Colombia. Four 6 x 40 m plots were installed in each area, in which the number of nests by species was counted and distances between closest nests of each species were measured. Five of the nests counted were chosen for seed extraction, and a nearby control sample was taken from each nest. In total, 295 nests were counted: 59 nests during the dry season and 236 nests during the rainy season, of which 84 belonged to P. fallax and 211 belonged to E. ruidum. A total of 21 304 seeds were found in nests and control samples, of which 19 349 were obtained from P. fallax nest refuse, and 318 were obtained from E. ruidum nests; 597 seeds were found in control samples. The number of seeds extracted from nests was significantly higher than the number of seeds removed from control samples. There was a significant difference between the number of seeds removed by P. fallax and the number of seeds removed by E. ruidum. The seed germination percentage from nests was higher than the percentage from seeds in control samples. In the case of P. fallax, the germination percentage was lower in control samples and higher in nests and refuse. The results suggest that the ant species E. ruidum and P. fallax may contribute to seed dispersal and re-establishment of vegetation in areas where they were found. These ants may thus significantly contribute to restoration processes in areas degraded by mining.
