Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) could be isolated from various fermented food products. One potential source of LAB is traditional fermented food. The aim of the study was to isolate and investigate antimicrobial activity of LAB isolated from traditional Batak food, “naniura”. The LAB isolates were characterized by Gram staining, fermentation type and catalase test. The investigation of antimicrobial activity of LAB against pathogenic bacteria were conducted using disc diffusion method. The results showed that 6 isolates of BAL were successfully isolated namely BN1, BN2, BN3, BN4, BN5 and BN6 had characteristics of Gram positive, rod shaped and catalase negative. All selected isolate have heterofermentation type. Four isolates (BN1, BN2, BN5 and BN6) were able to inhibit S. aureus, E. coli and S. typhi with inhibition zone diameters ranging from 6,9 to 12,3 cm. Based on the result, it was concluded that LAB isolated from naniura has potential as a source of probiotics.

A series 1,2,4-triazole piperine analogues (TP1-TP6) were designed and synthesized. The structures were confirmed using 1H NMR and 13C NMR. Antibacterial study was done using Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus) and Gram-negative micro-organisms (E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) by disc diffusion method. Compound containing chloro substitution (TP6) showed the highest effect, while compound TP1, TP3, TP4, TP5 showed the moderate activity.

The aim of the present research work to investigate antimicrobial activity of some honey samples six winter honeys six summer honeys collected from different regions of Western Ghats. The microbes used in this study are Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis. Antibacterial activity of the honeys was assayed using the Disc diffusion method. Noticeable variations in the antibacterial activity of the different honey samples were observed. Among the microbes Staphylococcus aureus is the most sensitive against all honey samples shows the maximum inhibitor zone compare to summer honeys.

The antimicrobial effect of 11 selected Turkish spice essential oils was investigated against seventeen pathogenic bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils of six spices (cumin, fennel, laurel, mint, marjoram, oregano, pickling herb, sage, savory, thyme (black) and thyme) was tested at four concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 1 and 2%) on various microorganisms ( E. aerogenes, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7, K. pneumoniae, P. vulgaris, S. enteritidis, S. gallinarum, S. typhimurium, S. aureus, Y. enterocolitica, A. hydrophila, C. xerosis, M. luteus, M. smegmatis, E. feacalis, P. aeruginosa and P. fluorescens). All preparations showed antibacterial activity against at least one or more bacteria. The inhibitory effect of the essential oils was evaluated through paper disc diffusion method. In general, the essential oils at 1 and 2% levels were effective. The most active essential oils were marjoram, thyme and oregano. According to the results, the studied essential oils potentially might be used as antibacterial agents to prevent the spoilage of food products, although further research is needed.

A new series of aspirin bearing alkylated amines moieties 1–12 were synthesised by reacting isothiocyanate with a series of aniline derivatives in overall yield of 16–56%. The proposed structures of all the synthesised compounds were confirmed using elemental analysis, FTIR, and 1H and  13C NMR spectroscopy. All compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus via turbidimetric kinetic and Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Compound 5 bearing meta -CH3 substituent showed the highest relative inhibition zone diameter against tested bacteria compared to ortho and para substituent. Furthermore, aspirin derivatives bearing shorter chains exhibited better bacterial inhibition than longer alkyl chains.

The aim of the study is to determine the presence of some bioactive compounds in Cassia alata L. leaves and seeds extracts such as tannins, saponins, anthraquinones and flavonoids. Total polyphenol contents (TPC) of leaves and seeds extracts are 59.211 mg GAE/g DW and 1.816 mg GAE/g DW, respectively, while their antioxidant capacities (AC) are 8.14 μmol Fe/g DW and 2.75 μmol Fe/g DW, respectively. The antimicrobial activity is determined by the paper disc diffusion method combined with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Leaves extract inhibits S. aureus and E. coli at MIC of 400 mg/mL; S. enteritidis and B. subtilis at MIC of 800 mg/mL. Besides, seeds extract also inhibits S. aureus at MIC of 200 mg/mL; E. coli, S. enteritidis and B. subtilis at MIC of 400 mg/mL. However, leaves and seeds extracts of C. alata do not show any inhibitions on the growth of A. niger. Keywords: Antibacterial activity, Antioxidant, Cassia alata L., Extract, MIC.

In the present study antibacterial activity of earthworm coelomic fluid Lampito mauritii were confinedagainst disease causing micro organisms through the inhibition zone formation by well diffusion method as well as disc diffusion method.

Abstract Background: Essential oils (EOs) are volatile, liquid substances that come from natural sources such as plants. As secondary metabolites of most plant species, that are typically found in leaf chloroplasts or from the hydrolysis of certain glycosides, their primary function is to combat attacks from predators as well as attract pollinators. Due to their biological activity, EOs have gained popularity in industries such as food processing, cosmetics, and personal care products as well as the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, the antimicrobial nature and antioxidant activity of Saudi Arabian EOs were compared with the antimicrobial activity of known antibiotics.Methods: The In vitro evaluation of antibacterial activity and antioxidant capacity of EOs collected from Jeddah domestic market for gram-negative and gram-positive pathogenic bacteria was carried out using the disc diffusion method. Disc diffusion method was used for the assessment of bactericidal activity of local EOs. The antioxidant activity was determined using phosphomolybdenum method. Furthermore, RAPD-PCR was used to compare the effects of these EOs on DNA in both untreated and treated pathogenic bacterial strains.Results and Conclusion: Bacterial strains with varying antibiotic resistance potential have been successfully isolated. The inhibition zone measurement revealed that the EOs used had some antibacterial effects on the bacterial strains as well as some selectivity on the bacterial strains that they acted on.

To evaluate the antimicrobial activities of extract of eleven plants were examined against four common bacterials. The ethanolic extracts of various plants such as  Cissus repens, Hedyotis scandens, Jatropha curcas, Morus alba, Inula cappa, Equisetum ramosissimum, Osyris wightiana, Alternantheria sessilis and Hibiscus lampas  investigated individually for antimicrobial activity by disc diffusion method. These were investigated against selected species of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris and Klebsiella pneumoniae to find the inhibitory activities of the microbes. A visual experiment was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial potential of cell-free culture supernatant of Weissella confusa (DD_A7) against the foodborne pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli 0157: H7 by disc diffusion method. The result revealed that DD_A7 exerted effective antibacterial potential to control the growth of E. coli upon treatment with 100 µg/mL of the culture supernatant. This study demonstrated that DD_A7 is a potent probiotic candidate to reduce the risk factor associated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The purposed of research was to evaluate the ability of Andong leaf extract as natural antimicrobial against pathogenic bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila. The plant was collected from yards at Kasuang Village, Tondano Disctrict of Minahasa Regency. After washing, the leaf was cut into small pieces, eased using a mortar and then extracted by maceration using alcohol 75% for 24 hours with ratio between simplicia and solvent was 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 and 1:8.  Antimicrobial activity of the extract was examined through disc diffusion method. The results showed that leaf extract of andong was able to inhibit the growth of bacteria  with strong and the sensitivity of the extract was categorized as strong.
