Higher education plays an undoubtedly important role in promoting social mobility in modern society. Previous literatures have tended to focus on the comparison between those with college degrees and those without, treating the former as a homogeneous group and the schooling process as a ‘black box.' This article introduces the background and research design of the Beijing College Students Panel Survey and analyzes the first wave of the data to investigate social stratification within the Chinese higher education system, paying special attention to the roles of family background, special admission policies, and key-point high schools in the process. Results show that while family socioeconomic status and residence locations continue to exert direct influences on the likelihood of getting into three tiers of universities (national elite universities, ‘211 universities,' and ‘non-211 universities'), key-point high schools and special admissions policies serve as important mechanisms in this process. Attending key-point high schools can help students to achieve higher scores in college entrance examinations and thus to ensure equitable access to college education; special admissions policies apparently benefit those from advantaged family backgrounds. Moreover, those in the national elite universities are more likely to join the Party than their counterparts in other universities, although their intentions are lower. These findings have important implications for understanding the role of higher education in elite formation and social stratification in contemporary China.

The University is the cradle of the higher education. In the college life, the college students continue to accept the new knowledge and continue to grow. Obviously, the level of the university education will be directly related to the growth for the college students. Therefore, it is an important job to evaluate and order the college education quality. In this paper, we combine the Grey theory, TOPSIS with DEA method. And we propose an improved Grey-TOPSIS-DEA model. Then, we use the model to evaluate the college education quality. Finally, we get the rankings of the college education. In the last part of this paper, we use the method to evaluate the education quality for different colleges. And we verify the validity of the method.

As a nation we pride ourselves that half our our high school graduates enter college. Yet many of these people will not graduate. Moreover, five years from now nearly 70 percent of all jobs will probably require at least two years of college education. We note that in the early 1950's about 11 percent of all college students were in junior colleges. Now about one million students are enrolled in two-year institutions; this represents about 20 percent of all students in college and about twice the number in teachers’ colleges. With the help of local, state, and federal funds junior colleges are growing very rapidly. It is clear that junior colleges play a vitally important role in our program of higher education.

This article contributes to the conceptual and empirical distinction between (the assessment of) appraisals of teaching behavior and (the assessment of) self-reported competence acquirement within academic course evaluation. The Bologna Process, the current higher-education reform in Europe, emphasizes education aimed toward vocationally oriented competences and demands the certification of acquired competences. Currently available evaluation questionnaires measure the students’ satisfaction with a lecturer’s behavior, whereas the “Evaluation in Higher Education: Self-Assessed Competences” (HEsaCom) measures the students’ personal benefit in terms of competences. In a sample of 1403 German students, we administered a scale of satisfaction with teaching behavior and the German version of the HEsaCom at the same time. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the estimated correlations between the various scales of self-rated competences and teaching behavior appraisals were moderate to strong, yet the constructs were shown to be empirically distinct. We conclude that the self-rated gains in competences are distinct from satisfaction with course and instructor. In line with the higher education reform, self-reported gains in competences are an important aspect of academic course evaluation, which should be taken into account in the future and might be able to restructure the view of “quality of higher education.” The English version of the HEsaCom is presented in the Appendix .
