Abstract This study is about heroism in the novel The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. There are three points of discussion under this title: giving protection, defending rights and gratitude. Defending rights is associated with heroic deeds. A hero is a random citizen that rises to an occasion and performs an action of superhero proportions. Gratitude implies thankfulness or an appreciation of benefits conferred together with a desire, when practicable, to return those benefits. Defending rights is tied to human rights which are universally applicable to one and all. These are the significant components of heroism. One of the relevant and outstanding modern theories of heroism applied here is proposed by Gibbon (2009) stating that hero is just an average man who fights to solve a common problem in today’s society. The study is conducted with Descriptive Qualitative Method proposed by Haughman (2009) in which he states that Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that focuses on the way people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. Kipling leads children down the jungle path into adventures beyond their day to day imagining and along the way he shows the value of ‘doing for yourself', of 'learning who to trust'. The result shows that heroism is highlighted through the major characters and the conclusive points are some of the significant characters such as Mowgli, Father Wolf, Mother Wolf, Hathi, and Bagheera have done heroic deeds. Their heroism is presented in the forms of giving protection, defending rights and gratitude. Keywords: heroism, human rights, gratitude

The study concludes that Sa'id Hawwa made several contributions to the field of Sufism:  they are the integration of Sufi discourse with perspectives from other forms of Islamic knowledge;  and the revitalization of Sufi discourse by acknowledging current reality; and the criticism of those apsects of Sufism that are deemed to have deviated from the authentic Sufi path. He also linked aspects of the practice of Sufism with spiritual preparation for the restoration of the caliphate system. In other words, Sa’id Hawwa’s perspective is centered on the re-interpretation of Sufism, as a medium to elevate the status of the Islamic Sharia comprehensively.   Keywords: Sa`id Hawwa; contemporary tasawwuf perspective; Sufism tradition.     Sa`id Hawwa adalah tokoh idea kebangkitan Islam pasca-Uthmaniyyah. As a social plague that has been with mankind for all time, rape has left many stereotyped, stigmatised, and sometimes, irreparably damaged. The act is an evil that defies the age, race, location, and social status of its sufferers. Despite the heavy legal penalties that this crime attracts in many parts of the world, its occurrence has, nonetheless, been on the increase. Research reveals that many rape cases go unreported by their sufferers for fear of further harm from their attackers and for fear of stigma. In Nigeria, even when they are reported to the police, the authorities do too little to bring perpetrators to justice - a misnomer that gives the rapists more impetus to repeat their act. The few of these cases that are carried by the mass media, ostensibly, project the sufferers as hopeless and pitiable individuals, whose lives are ruined. Theoretically situated within the framing ideology, this paper adopted the textual analysis method to establish that Nigerian newspapers exploit the use of headlines and photos to re-victimise raped persons in the ways they are portrayed. Rather than ameliorate the effects of the evil done to such individuals, these texts present them and their loved ones as hopeless victims. This paper holds that rapists should be portrayed as the ones needing of pity and help. Although the paper agrees that both the rapist and the raped need dissimilar psychosocial (and medical) rehabilitations, it recommends that Nigerian newspapers should deemphasise angles that throw pity parties for those affected by the incidents, while the rapists should be projected as the real victims of themselves and of their acts.

This study constitutes an Analysis of The Effect of Foot Binding Custom from Lisa See’s novel Snow Flower and The Secret Fan published in 2006. The Positive and Negative effects are the topics to discuss. This analysis uses the data  taken from the novel applying descriptive qualitative research. One of the significant theories of the custom used in this study is that a person who claims that the essence of a culture having a custom in it is not its artifacts, tools, or other tangible cultural elements but how the members of the group interpret, use, and perceive them. It is the values, symbols, interpretations, and perspectives that distinguish one from another in modernized societies; it is not material objects and other tangible aspects of human societies. People within a culture usually interpret the meaning of symbols, artifacts, and behaviors in the same or in similar ways. The findings show that Foot Binding Custom gives women positive effects such as high statue in the society, and symbol of beauty. Besides the positive effects, there are also negative effects such as infection, and even death. The conclusions of the study are Foot binding, as the time goes by, is not persevered anymore as it gives more negative effects than the positive ones. However, health is the most important part of human life. Health is the pivot upon which a man's whole personality and its well-being depend. An ailing and aching body saps the enthusiasm for pursuit. Unwholesome feelings and sensations retard the pace of functional activity, economic development and spiritual uplift.

Islam has been growing quickly in the world, yet it is a predominately misunderstood religion. Othering Islam through media propaganda and western writings, and mis associating it with some assumptions are still rampant. Thus, the researcher attempts at showing these assumptions stereotypical prejudgments of Islam and Muslims that are commonly associated with Western assumptions resulted in Islamophobia and exploring the role of counter-discourses in contemporary Black-American Fiction by analyzing Umm Zakiyyah’s If I Should Speak and showing to what extents the novel has an important role in correcting assumptions and narrating the Islamic facts. Thus, this article highlights Umm Zakiyyah’s narrative of Islam’s truth within its historical sources the Qur’an and the Sunnah. The paper analyses Umm Zakiyyah’s reconsideration of Islam’s truth, by focusing on the meaning of Islam and being a Muslim. To do so, this qualitative and non-empirical research is conducted in a descriptive-theoretical analysis, using the selected novel as a primary source and library and online critical materials, such as books and journal articles, as secondary references. Based on the analysis, it is found that Umm Zakiyyah narrates Islam and Muslims to counter the West’s negative view on Islam. Furthermore, based on the story, the power of Muslim self-identification within the historical transparent knowledge based on the Quran’s perspectives leads to the conversion of Tamika Douglass, proving that Islam can be perceived positively by non-Muslims; in this case, it is represented within its subjectivity. It is found that the novel can be a tool of Islamic da’wah [call for the faith]. Hence, the Muslim writers and novelists should write to solve the challenges facing Muslims and the Ummah by Islamizing English fiction.

The study deals with the expression of social identity in Asians elite community circle found in the novel Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. Primary data regarding social identity expressions are noted based on the characters’ utterances and author’s narration found in the novel.  The study is categorized as qualitative research as the data are displayed in the form of words from the novel’s original language. The methods of collecting data used by the writer are reading and labeling. The writer acts as the mere observer without other instruments included. Data analysis method includes compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting and concluding based on Robert K. Yin’s techniques of analyzing data. The results indicate that there are a number of social identity expressions in Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians. There are two significant ways of expressing social identity of the rich: (1) the patterns of consumption including food, fashion, and personal luxury belongings. (2) social image maintenance through early education, interaction, special occasion and club membership.

Diamond Shumsher’s masterpiece, Seto Bagh, is a significant historical novel in Nepali literature. The novel made a vibrant debut in depicting historicity in fictional prose in the Nepali context. In particular, the reconsideration of the portrayal of history from a new perspective is relevant. Traditionally, this is considered a historical realist novel. Nevertheless, magical elements are profusely used in the novel. In this study, this niche opens up avenues to re-evaluate the historicity vis-à-vis magical elements. I have adopted Maggie Ann Bowers’ and Wendy B. Faris’s notions and perspectives on the theoretical lens of magical realism to demystify the magic and history in the text. Further, I have adapted the content analysis method to analyze the textual evidences from the selected novel. The main finding exhibits that the novelist has amalgamated historical facts with magical elements like supernatural beings and happenings. Thus, the novel is an example of historical magical realism. This implies that only established beliefs and theories are not sufficient to judge the literary works rightly. Therefore, new lenses should be explored to enter into the world of fictional prose works as such.
