The article is devoted to the question of proper names, the way of their creation and connection of the proper names with personal qualities, traits and character’s lifestyle. The main focus is concentrated on links between proper names and characters’ features in modern English cinematic discourse. The development of modern English-language cinematic discourse has prompted many authors to pay attention to the question of the proper name as a nomination of the hero, a description of his character and lifestyle. The names have a significant meaning, the author expresses not only the actual reference of the character, but also his own attitude to him, gives a certain characteristic and key features of the hero, by which the viewer can make assumptions without even going into details. Names have an impact on the viewer, they have a connotative meaning, which is revealed through the character and details of the hero. The article gives examples of movies and series of the Marvel and DC universes with famous superheroes and thieves, whose names reflect not only the characteristics but also the hero’s belonging to the good or evil side, his actions, behavior and psychological state, as well as superhuman abilities and characteristic. The article also considers examples of anthroponyms and names with a mythological basis, allusive proper names and simple short names. The tendencies of transferring figurative load to proper names are singled out in the work. Given symbolism of proper names in cinematic discourse makes the research relevant in modern linguistics. Further studying in this field as well as semantic analysis of the relationship between the name of the hero and his actions, characteristics, and the author’s attitude to the character are promising in the long run.

In case of bilingual speakers, proper names undergo different transformations, depending on the contextual character of a manifestation of meanings, “the relationship between the proper name and the denoted object being temporary, dependent on the verbal and situational context” (Tomescu 1998: 1). Within the scope of the current economic migration of Romanians to Spain and Italy, the names of Romanian people have undergone various modifications under the influence of Spanish and Italian onomastics. In the present work, the performance of two main tasks is described: an analysis of the interferences which emerge within communication, in case of the proper names of Romanian people who have emigrated to Spain and Italy; and classification of the proper names of new-born children within Romanian families that have settled in these countries.

Abstract. The article is focused on to the study of intertextual frames in media discourse where precedent units containing proper names and their derivatives serve as markers of intertextuality. These cognitive structures are considered at semantic and pragmatic levels of discourse. Groups of precedent units marking intertextual connections are identified at each level. At a semantic level intertextual markers include lexicalised precedent names and their derivatives, precedent names as part of set expressions or figures of speech; at a pragmatic level they consist of citations, quasi-citations, specific metaphors, and speech patterns, typical of a certain author or type of text. Intertextual markers can be strong or weak. The operations of reference and inference are applied in order to interpret the information coded in the intertextual frame.Key words: intertextual frame , precedent unit , proper name, discourse levels

Malay is a language from the Austronesian family and unlike the Indo-European-originated English, it does not generally have inflectional temporal markers. Investigating this from a cross-linguistics - influence perspective, differences between the languages could mean difficulties for Malay speakers to acquire features of English. The objectives of this study are to investigate Malay speakers’ pronunciation of the English language –ed allomorphs – [d], [t] and [ɪd]/[əd] – and the relationship between the morphophonological forms and two types of linguistic knowledge, one of which is implicit while the other is explicit. Data were collated from fifty participants who are social science undergraduates and English majors who speak English as a second language. Four instruments were used to gauge the respondents’ verbal use of –ed allomorphs as well as their implicit and explicit knowledge of the allomorphs. Results indicate that the students’ verbal usage of the target items either lacks approximation to Standard English pronunciation or is largely dropped altogether. Results also suggest a moderate relationship between implicit and explicit knowledge of the allomorphs and their verbal production by Malay speakers of English. The finding illuminates acquisition problem of English language speakers whose mother tongue does not share similar inflectional markers. Pedagogical solutions can help learners of the English language to approximate Standard English and in the long run, enhance effective communication and increase chances of employability.

Flow is an optimal psychological state that has been described at length by Csikszentmihalyi (1990, 1993) as a state in which people become totally immersed in an activity and enjoy it intensely. According to Csikszentmihalyi, such a peak experience can emerge in any situation in which there is an activity to do. Researchers have indeed found evidence for flow during the execution of a large number of different activities including sports, work, and playing music. However, state of flow during language learning activities has hardly been studied. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between task-induced state of flow during vocabulary acquisition activities and the achievement in terms of short-term and long-term vocabulary acquisition. Sixty five learners at an English Language Institution took part in vocabulary acquisition tasks aimed at engaging learners cognitively and affectively in the state of flow. To measure flow state the “Flow Perceptions Questionnaire” in the Likert format (Egbert, 2003) was used. It was an instrument for gathering the data concerning students’ affective responses during task engagement. The researcher-made retention measurement was used to determine vocabulary learning efficiency. The result indicated that flow existed in the vocabulary learning classroom and that there was a significant relationship between the level of flow state and vocabulary retention both in immediate and delayed measurements. Also male and female learners of EFL were different in terms of vocabulary retention resulting from flow state.

The role of monetary factor in generating inflationary processes in Russia has stimulated various debates in social and scientific circles for a relatively long time. The authors show that identification of the specificity of relationship between money and inflation requires a complex approach based on statistical modeling and involving a wide range of indicators relevant for the price changes in the economy. As a result a model of inflation for Russia implying the decomposition of inflation dynamics into demand-side and supply-side factors is suggested. The main conclusion drawn is that during the recent years the volume of inflationary pressures in the Russian economy has been determined by the deviation of money supply from money demand, rather than by money supply alone. At the same time, monetary factor has a long-run spread over time impact on inflation.

The relationship and causality direction between electricity consumption and economic growth is an important issue in the fields of energy economics and policies towards energy use. Extensive literatures has discussed the issue, but the array of findings provides anything but consensus on either the existence of relations or direction of causality between the variables. This study extends research in this area by studying the long-run and causal relations between economic growth, electricity consumption, labour and capital based on the neo-classical one sector aggregate production technology mode using data of electricity consumption and real GDP for ASEAN from the year 1983 to 2012. The analysis is conducted using advanced panel estimation approaches and found no causality in the short run while in the long-run, the results indicate that there are bidirectional relationship among variables. This study provides supplementary evidences of relationship between electricity consumption and economic growth in ASEAN.

The article is devoted to the study of personal names from a cognitive point of view. The study is based on the cognitive concept that speech actually exists not in the speech, not in linguistic writings and dictionaries, but in consciousness, in the mental lexicon, in the language of the brain. The conditions for identifying personal names can encompass not only the context, encyclopedias, and reference books, but also the sound form of the word. In the communicative process, during a free associative experiment, which included a name and a recipient’s mental lexicon. The recipient was assigned a task to quickly give some association to the name. The aggregate of a certain number of reactions of different recipients forms the associative field of a proper name. The associative experiment creates the best conditions for identifying the lexeme. The definition of a monosemantic personal name primarily includes the search of what it denotes, while during the process of identifying a polysemantic personal name recipients tend have different reactions. Scientific value is posed by the effect of the choice of letters for the name, sound symbolism, etc. The following belong to the generalized forms of identification: usage of a hyperonym; synonyms and periphrases or simple descriptions; associations denoting the whole (name stimulus) by reference to its part (associatives); cognitive structures such as “stimulus — association” and “whole (stimulus) — part (associative)”; lack of adjacency; mysterious associations. The topicality of the study is determined by its perspective to identify the directions of associative identification of proper names, which is one of the branches of cognitive onomastics. The purpose of the study is to identify, review, and highlight the directions of associative identification of proper names; the object of the research is the names in their entirety and variety; its subject is the existence of names in the mental lexicon, which determines the need for singling out the directions for the associative identification of the personal names.
