The aim of study was to know the effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi (AMF), Glomus mosseae on the growth of onion Allium cepa L. on red-yellow podzolic soils. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) factorial with 10 replicates was used in this experiment. The first factor was mycorrhizae, with two level: without inoculation as a control (M0); 10 gram inoculation = M1). The second factorwas leaf litter of gamal Gliricidia sepium L. species   wich were no litter as S0; 5 gram litter = S1; S2 was 10 gram of litter; and 20 grams of loitter in one kilogram of soil separately. Parameters used in this study were the growth of onion that has infected root in percent, and Relative Growth Rate (RGR). ANOVA was used to analyze the data, and followed with DMRT at 95% level test. The result showed that mycorrhizal inoculation increased root and shoot fresh weight, the dry weight of shoot; and the percentage of root infection on the onion. While the leaf litter of gamal increased only in leaf area. In contrast mycorrhizal inoculation and gamal leaf litter and their combination had no effect on other growth parameters. Key words: AMF, Glomus mosseae, Gliricidia sepium, Allium cepa.

Sandy soils with high alkalinity are characterized by low copper (Cu) contents that lead to many deficiency symptoms in plants. Cu deficiency in plants can be corrected using several cheap Cu sources. Nevertheless, the effects that novel sources, such as Cu nanoparticles (NPs), have on plants remain poorly studied. In the present work, we investigated the effect and efficiency of Cu supplementation to onion (Allium cepa L.) plants using Cu sulfate, chelate, or NPs, and compared their effects on bulb quality, yield, and contents of phytochemicals. Two successive seasons (2018/2019 and 2019/2020) of field experiments were conducted in newly reclaimed sandy soils, where plants were sprayed with either 10 ppm CuO NPs, 20 ppm CuSO4·5H2O, or 20 ppm of Cu chelates. Overall, Cu deficiency (control) resulted in a significant decrease in yield and all quality traits of onion plants. CuO NPs treatment significantly enhanced growth parameters, including plant height, number of leaves, fresh and dry weight, yield, and bulb quality, compared with Cu sulfate and chelates. This was also the case regarding chemical constituents such as macro- and micro-nutrients, total soluble solids, phytochemical compounds, vitamins, and amino acids. Although Cu sulfate is the cheapest form used for Cu supplementation, results of the present study suggest that CuO NPs was not only safe to use, but also was the treatment that led to the highest onion yield and quality.

The application of  liquid compost and of beneficial soil microorganism such as arbsucular mycorrhizal fungi can be used to replace chemical fertilizer application. The aim of this study was to investigate the growth of red onion (Allium cepa L.) plant fertilized by liquid compost and  inoculated by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. This study was conducted based on a completely randomized design with two factors. The first factor was an addition of liquid compost dosages (0, 50, 100 and 200 ml/polybag). The second factor was an addition of AM fungal inoculum (with and without addition). The results showed that the growth of red onion plant was not significantly affected by the addition of liquid compost and AM fungal inoculum.  However,  the red onion plant fertilized by 200 ml liquid compost per polybag had the lowest shoot dry weight. The addition of AM fungal inoculum was not increasing plant growth because the quality of used inoculum was not good.

The paitan plant contains allelopathic compounds for other plants so that the utilize of paitan plant as a source of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) has not been widely applied. This research aimed to study the interaction between LOF dosage and appropriate application method of LOF to increase the growth of kailan plants. The research conducted at experimental garden of UIN Bandung from June-August 2016. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with two factors and replicated four times. The first factor was application methods (A), i.e. a1=direct application to the soil, and a2= spraying. The second factor was LOF dosage (T), i.e. t0: 0 ml plant-1, t1: 20 ml plant-1, t2: 40 ml plant-1, t3: 60 ml plant-1, t4: 80 ml plant-1. The growth parameters observed i.e. plant height (14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 Day after Transplanting (DAT)), leaf area 42 DAT, plant dry weight 42 DAT, and plant fresh weight 42 DAT. The data then analyzed with analysis of variance at a significant level of 5%. If the analysis of variance was significant, the Duncan multiple range test was used at α=5%. The research results showed there was no interaction between method of application with a various dosage of paitan LOF to all of the growth parameters. The application paitan LOF showed similar growth in terms of plant height, leaf area, plant dry, and plant fresh weight. The application method of paitan LOF direct to the soil or spraying to leaves can not increase kailan plant growth.

Onion bulbs (Allium cepa L. cv. Creamgold), grown in a phytotron from seed, had a dry weight as percentage of fresh weight that decreased as growth temperatures increased from 22/16 to 33/28C day/night. There were no significant differences between growth temperatures in the fructose, sucrose or fructan content and, although glucose content was higher at high temperatures, there was no correlation of total carbohydrate content with growth temperature. The sum of fructose, glucose and sucrose per unit tissue water was constant between temperatures, suggesting that the mono- and disaccharide content may control the bulb water content. These results, from controlled-environment tests, predict that in the field the best yield of dry weight as a percentage of fresh weight will be obtained at low growth temperatures.

The response of onion (Allium cepa L.) to postemergence applications of oxyfluorfen during early seedling development was measured in growth room experiments. Tolerance to oxyfluorfen increased more than 70-fold from the late loop to the two fully developed leaf stage. Field and growth room experiments were also conducted to determine the relationship of spray retention and epicuticular wax on the tolerance of onion seedlings to the herbicide. In general, there was a progressive decrease in spray retention and a corresponding increase in epicuticular wax per unit dry weight as plant age increased. Spray retention in the field was approximately twice as great as in the growth room. The amount of epicuticular wax on the leaf surfaces of the onions was about equivalent under the two growing conditions. A significant decrease in epicuticular wax per unit dry weight between the late one-leaf and late two-leaf stages occurred under both field and growth room conditions, while tolerance to the herbicide continued to increase during the same period.Key words: Onions, oxyfluorfen, ED50, spray retention, epicuticular wax

The high cost of purchasing inorganic fertilizer and its impacts on the soil and the environment remains a major concern in environmental management. Consequently, there is the need to explore other ways to enhance soil fertility. The study investigated the effects of Bambusa vulgaris Schrad. and Gliricidia sepium (Jacq) charcoal powders on the growth of Parkia biglobosa (Jacq). Benth seedlings. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 13 treatments and 9 replicates each. Seeds were sowed directly into polyethene pots while the various treatments were added a week after sowing seeds. Watering was done daily while weeding was done periodically. Growth parameters of seedling height (cm), stem diameter (mm) and leaf count were assessed weekly for 16weeks. Data collected was subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 5% level of significance while the means were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The result obtained showed that 15g of Gliricidia sepium charcoal powder + 2kg of topsoil) performed best in height and leaf production with values of 15.85cm and 20.58 respectively.5g of Bambusa vulgaris charcoal powder + 2kg of topsoil) performed best with the value of 0.41mm for stem diameter.2kg of topsoil had the least performance for all parameter assessed. The ANOVA result showed that there was significant difference at P>0.5 among the treatments at 5% level of probability in terms of plant height, stem diameter, leaf production. The study concludes that the addition of charcoalas soil additive enhanced growth of Parkia biglobosa seedling at nursery stage.

The response in growth and development of seedlings of Dialium guineense to different potting media was studied in the screen house. Five potting media: River sand (Rs), Top soil (Ts), Poultry manure (Pm), Rice husk (Rh) and Oil palm refuse bunch (OPRB) were used. They were evaluated as sole treatments and in combination with river sand (Rs) in different ratios (1:1, 1:2, 2:5 and 5:2) respectively. Altogether, twenty one (21) potting media types were evaluated. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) in three replications. Data were collected on monthly basis for plant growth parameters, while shoot and root dry weight were measured at the end of the experiment. On the average the seedlings of D. guineense responded best on the Rs + Ts 1:2 growth medium in number of leaves (16.67), stem girth (0.31 cm), number of nodes (11.67), shoot dry weight (1.24 g) and root dry weight (0.50 g). Rs + Ts 1:2 was followed by Rs + Pm 1:1 and Ts sole respectively with respect to the growth parameters evaluated and were not significantly (p 0.05) from one another, but were significantly (p < 0.05) different from other media and their combinations with river sand.
