This study aims to reveal the stylistic used in a short story written by Kahlil Gibran entitled “Surakh al-Qubur” and also to describe the effect of it toward meaning. This is a descriptive qualitative research that used stylistic analysis to show the aesthetics side found in the short story. Based on data analysis, it was found that there are five categories of language styles in short story Surakh al-Qubur, they are: first, lexical (synonym and typical words); second, grammatical (verb and noun); third, rhetorical (alliteration, asyndeton, assonance, chiasmus, polysyndeton, and hyperbole) and figure of speech (metaphor, personification, simile, and eponym); fourth, cohesion and connectors such as al-wawu, al-fa’u, tsumma, au, and am; and fifth, character speech that can be analyzed using narration and dialogue. The influence of stylistic on meaning is that readers get the information directly or indirectly, feels sadness, gives advice, gets a picture of injustice, makes readers curious and more focused.

This study aims to reveal the beauty of the language style in the short story Lailatun Ghaba 'anha al-Qamar by najib al-Kilany through a stylistic perspective. Najib al-Kilany as a writer also has his own style that is interesting to know. This study uses a descriptive method of data analysis by deploying data collection techniques, namely observations and note-taking. The results of this study reveal several stylistic aspects contained in the short story, such as: a semantic aspect which includes the use of at-taraduf (synonym), a syntactic aspect which includes the function of at-taqdim wa at-ta'khir (prioritizing word position and ending it), and an imagery aspect which includes simile, hyperbole, metaphor, and synecdoche styles. Based on the study’s results, it is concluded that Najib al-Kilany emphasizes the imaginary side of a story, which leads the reader to being immersed in his work.

Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan aspek seksualitas tokoh Lingga dalam cerpen “Lelaki dengan Bibir Tersenyum” karya Radhar Panca Dahana dan menginterpretasikannya dalam perspektif feminisme. Penelitian bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dan pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik studi pustaka. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori feminis. Hasil pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa dalam cerpen “Lelaki dengan Bibir Tersenyum” aspek seksualitas tokoh Lingga mencerminkan kebebasan bagi perempuan dalam melakukan aktivitas seksual sebagaimana yang diinginkannya. Hal ini sejalan dengan yang diperjuangkan oleh kaum feminis radikal-libertarian. Namun, jika dikaitkan dengan makna yang terkandung dalam nama Lingga, terdapat maksud tersirat dalam cerpen ini yang menunjukkan dominasi seksual sesungguhnya tetap berada pada pihak laki-laki.Abstract:The aim of this study is to describe sexuality aspect of Lingga in short story entitled “Lelaki dengan Bibir Tersenyum” written by Radhar Panca Dahana. It is also intended  interprete it within feminism perspective. This is a descriptive-qualitative research.  The data is collected by using literary method. The data analysis  applied feminism theories as references. The result showed that the sexuality aspects of Lingga reflects a freedom for women in committing whatever sexual activity as they expect to. This is in line with what radical-lybertarian feminists struggle for. Yet, if it is associated to the meaning of the word lingga, there is an implicit intention to suggest that sexual domination actually remains on the male side.

This undergraduate thesis examines the type of transitive verbs found in a children story entitled “Pinocchio”, which was taken from the children story book entitled Disney Storyland Treasury, and analyzes the degree of transitivity found in the story. The data were collected using the documentation method and were analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. In addition, in order to present the data analysis clearly, both formal and informal methods were used since the data were described in form of sentences and tables. The main theory applied in this study is proposed by Hopper and Thompson (1980) about transitivity, who said that transitivity is a matter of degree and partly because obviousness of change in the object. This theory is supported by the types of verb proposed by Givon (1984), which is used to find out the types of verb in the story. The finding of the analysis showed that there were three types of verbs found in the story namely state verb, action verb and process verb. Each verb has different degree of transitivity, where the degree of state verb is categorized as low in transitivity, action and process verbs have the highest degree of parameter of transitivity.

This study was aimed at identifying the language functions, analyzing the types of errors in and identifying the sources of errors committed by local guides in DanauTamblingan. This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were three local guides in DanauTamblingan. The data were collected through observation and interview. Interactive data analysis model was used to analyze the data. The results of this study show that 14 language functions namely advising, thanking, greeting, refusing, self-introduction, offering something, asking information, giving information, explaining something, giving suggestion, giving command, telling prohibition, apologizing, and saying goodbye. There were 4 types of error: omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The total number of errors were 579 which consisted of 365 errors or 63.0% in omission, 103 errors or 19.0% in addition, 93 errors or 15% in misformation and 18 errors or 3.0% in misordering.

The development of music, film, and other industry of entertainment is stated to contribute to the existence of slang words. There are so many slang words that become popular after they are included in the lyrics of songs. One of them is YOLO (You Only Live Once) which is popularized by Drake. In relation to that, this descriptive qualitative research attempts to find out the types and word formation processes of slang words found in the lyrics of Drake’s songs. By taking the model of document analysis by Bowen (2009) and Qualitative data analysis by Miles and Hubberman (1994), it is found out that there are 190 slang words existing in the lyrics of Drake’s songs. They are respectively categorized into Clipping type (62 slangs), Fresh and Creative type (44 slangs), Compounding type (44 slangs), Imitative type (36 slangs), and Acronym type (4 slangs).

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a study of language which views language as two characteristics, systemic and functional. With using SFL, the researchers try to analyze the tale’s story of Sabai Nan Aluih. The research aim is to identify the interpersonal meaning realized in that story and to reveal the speech function of language use in that story. The research design of this analysis is descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is the interpersonal meaning analysis of clauses as exchange in the tale of Sabai Nan Aluih. The data of this research is the clauses as exchange in the story of Sabai Nan Aluih. The source of data which is used in this research is the documentation of the data research paper. The researchers use document analysis from the story of Sabai Nan Aluih as collecting data. The data is analyzed by using description method. In the interpersonal analysis, declarative mood dominates almost the story, it is about 91 %. And, the data analysis of speech function is found in the story of Sabai Nan Aluih, statement, question and command, in where statement is domination from the story about 94%. Thus, it is important that the using of interpersonal meaning and the speech function of the story of Sabai Nana Aluih is as information

This study is focused on analysis of the politeness expressed by the main characters and supporting characters in “Beauty and the Beast” Movie. The objective of this study are to know the politeness expressed by the main characters; Beauty (Belle) and the Beast (Prince) and to know the politeness expressed by the supporting characters in “Beauty and the Beast” movie. This Study is qualitative research that used content analysis method. Technique of data analysis in this study is using descriptive qualitative. The result of analysis are the sum of expression of politeness in saying thank you are 8 expressions, in saying hello are 7 expression, in answer the saying hello are 2 expressions, in use ‘I’m sorry’ are 5 expression and of how to sound more polite are 5 expressions. The sum of all expression of politeness that expressed by the characters in “Beauty  and the Beast” movie are 27 expressions. Based on the discussion of the result of analysis, It can be concluded that expression of politeness is important in communication and it usually use in conversation when people in saying hello or greeting, when people answer the saying hello or greeting from others, when people ask with the sound more polite, and the last when people saying use ‘I’m sorry’ to refused and ignore something and ask to forgiven by other people. This study can be applied to conduct the learning material in teaching about the  English expression in conversation, especially expression of politeness.

The purpose of this study, first, is to analyze the echocritical element reflected by the author through the short story Pegasus Jatuh. Second, integrate ecological values in literature teaching. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The approach used is Garrard's eco-criticism. Sources of data obtained from the behavior of characters in the short story. Data analysis begins by marking words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that have a focus on environmental exploitation. The results show in the short story “Pegasus Jatuh”, the author reflects environmental phenomena that include illegal logging, buying and selling protected animals, and exploitation of gold. The analysis applied in literature learning which has an important role in character education. Literature in education has a role to develop the language, cognitive, affective, psychomotoric, personality, and social aspects of students.

This research discusses imagery, diction and figure of speech in a short story entitled “Jalan Gelap Langit Terang” written by Abdul Wachid. This short story is one of the author’s works in a short story anthology, Bacalah Cinta, published by BukuLaela in 2005. This research reveals some figure of speeches such as diction, imagery and elaboration employed by the author of the short story. This research applied both stylistic approach and descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was done by close reading observation and note taking. The result shows that the author takes the advantage of connotative, English and Indonesian diction in some sentences. The imagery employed by the author covers personification, hyperbole, metaphor, repetition, rhetoric, elypsis, and antithesis. Moreover, the author tends to show repetition and symblolism in his style.

This research examines readers’ perspective of 18 Indonesian national characters in Inem, a short story by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The sample of this research is 34 students of XI Akuntansi Keuangan dan Lembaga of SMKN 1 Pujon. The aim of this research is to analyze whether the students’ perceptions toward Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s short story, entitled Inem match to their understanding on 18 Indonesian national characters. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The finding of this research states each student has different perception of the Indonesian national characters in the Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s short story entitled Inem. However, most of the students have the same perceptions of the Indonesian national character in the short story entitled Inem. Their perception depends on how they understand the meaning of each of the 18 Indonesian national characters. Therefore, the researcher claims that the students’ perceptions toward Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s short story, entitled Inem match to their understanding on 18 Indonesian national characters.
