Recommendations for Designing Wooden Arches on Metal-toothed Plates

This paper presents the findings of the pilot studies and recommendations for designing of two-hinged wooden arches. The prototype models of wooden arches with the span of 6mand the rise of 1m were designed. The models had a rectangular cross-section of 180x40mm and a T-section of 180x40mm with a plywood plate with the thickness of 6 mm and the width of 500mm. The main objective of the T-section was to ensure the stability of the arch. Each arch was composed of six segments –boards joined by clamping plates. The bowstring truss including two inclined tie bars enables carrying asymmetric loads and provides in-plane stability of the arch. A methodology for laboratory testing of the prototype models of wooden arches subjected to different types of loads was developed. Two prototypes of wooden arches were tested with rectangular cross-sections and two T-section ones subjected to the loading across the span, and two prototypes subjected to the half-span loading. In total, eight arches were tested. Deflections of arches, cross-section deformations and arch thrust force were recorded. The arches were tested until failure. The results of testing revealed insufficient stability of the arches with rectangular cross-section in the horizontal plane. For the arches with T-section the whole arch rib was damaged, the in-plane stability was ensured by the T-section. The collapsing force of the T-section arch was about 1.3 times greater than the collapsing force of the rectangular section arches.

During the operation of the hydrocyclone the cut size diameter is the most important data. This is connected to feed rate, which is closely related to the feed cross section. Preliminary research has revealed that square cross-section is more effective than circular cross-section. The research compared 2 types of feed cross sections at 5 different feed rates. One is a standard rectangular cross-section and the other is a square cross-section that narrows with a baffle plate. Preliminary calculations for cut size diameter have shown that better particle separation at all speeds can be achieved with the baffle plate solution. In both types, the increased velocity created decreased cut size diameter. During the simulation, the baffle plate did not cause any abnormalities in the internal pressure and velocity distributions. The simulation revealed that the particles did not behave as previously calculated.

The article presents the derivation of the resolving equation for the calculation of lateral buckling of rectangular beams. When deriving the basic equation, the initial imperfections of the beam are taken into account, which are specified in the form of the eccentricity of the applied load, the initial deflection in the plane of least stiffness and the initial twist angle. The influence of initial imperfections on the process of beam stability loss is investigated.

This paper represents the analysis of 1303 specimens of CFST experimental data. Test results are compared with EC4 provided method for determining the load‐bearing capacity of these composite elements. Several types of CFSTs were tested: both circular and rectangular cross‐sections with solid and hollow concrete core with axial load applied without and with moment, with sustained load and preloading. For circular cross‐section columns there is a good agreement between the test failure load and the EC4 calculation for both short and long columns with and without moment. For rectangular cross‐section columns the agreement is good except when the concrete cylinder strength was greater than 75 MPa, when many tests failed below the strength predicted by EC4. Preloading the steel tube before filling with concrete seems to have no effect on the strength. This paper also presents the stress distribution, confinement distribution and complete average longitudinal stress‐strain curves for concrete‐filled steel tubular elements. Based on the definition of the “Unified Theory”, the CFST is looked upon as an entity of a new composite material. In this paper, the research achievement of the strength and stability for centrifugal‐hollow and solid concrete filled steel tube are introduced. These behaviours relate to the hollowness ratio and the confining indexes of corresponding solid CFST. If the hollow ratio equals to 0,4–0,5 and over, the N‐ϵ relationship exists in steady descending stage. The critical stress of CFST elements stability is determined as an eccentric member with the initial eccentricity by use of finite element method. Santrauka Straipsnyje analizuojami 1303 betonšerdžių plieninių strypų bandinių eksperimentiniai duomenys. Duomenys lyginami su eurokode 4 pateiktais kompozitinių elementų laikomosios galios nustatymo metodais. Analizuojami šie betonšerdžių plieninių strypų bandinių tipai: pilnaviduriai ir tuščiaviduriai, apskrito ir stačiakampio skerspjūvio kolonos, kurių galuose veikia arba neveikia momentas, su iš anksto pridėta arba ilgalaike apkrova. Apskrito skerspjūvio kolonų laikomosios galios bandymų rezultatai atitinka skaičiavimų reikšmes, apskaičiuotas pagal eurokode 4 pateiktu metodu. Stačiakampio skerspjūvio elementų laikomosios galios reikšmių bandymo rezultatai puikiai atitinka teorines reikšmes, kai betono ritininis stipris nesiekia 75 MPa. Išankstinis elementų apkrovimas poveikio elementų laikomajai galiai beveik neturi. Taip pat nagrinėjami betonšerdžių elementų įtempių būvių pasiskirstymas, betono apspaudimo poveikis ir išilginių deformacijų ir įtempių kreivės. Pateikiama S. T. Zhong „Unifikuota teorija“, kuri nagrinėja kompozitinį elementą kaip visumą. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos kompozitinio plieninio ir betoninio elemento stiprumo ir pastovumo sąlygos. Tokių elementų reikšmėmis. Jeigu tuštumos santykis lygus 0,4–0,5 ir daugiau, N-ε sąryšis yra kritimo stadijoje. Elgsenos stadijos keičiasi pagal tuštumos koeficientą.

We consider the propagation of a gravity current of density ρc from a lock length x0 and height h0 into an ambient fluid of density ρa in a horizontal channel of height H along the horizontal coordinate x. The bottom and top of the channel are at z = 0, H, and the cross-section is given by the quite general −f1(z) ≤ y ≤ f2(z) for 0 ≤ z ≤ H. When the Reynolds number is large, the resulting flow is governed by the parameters R = ρc/ρa, H* = H/h0 and f(z) = f1(z) + f2(z). We show that the shallow-water one-layer model, combined with a Benjamin-type front condition, provides a versatile formulation for the thickness h and speed u of the current. The results cover in a continuous manner the range of light ρc/ρa ≪ 1, Boussinesq ρc/ρa ≈ 1 and heavy ρc/ρa ≫ 1 currents in a fairly wide range of depth ratio in various cross-section geometries. We obtain analytical solutions for the initial dam-break stage of propagation with constant speed, which appears for any cross-section geometry, and derive explicitly the trend for small and large values of the governing parameters. For large time, t, a self-similar propagation is feasible for f(z) = bzα cross-sections only, with t(2+2α)/(3+2α). The present approach is a significant generalization of the classical non-Boussinesq gravity current problem. The classical formulation for a rectangular (or laterally unbounded) channel is now just a particular case, f(z) = const., in the wide domain of cross-sections covered by this new model.

The aim of this paper is to present a solution algorithm for determining the frame element crosssection carrying capacity, defined by combined effect of bending moment and axial force. The distributions of stresses and strains inside a cross-section made of linearly hardening material are analysed. General nonlinear stress-strain dependencies are composed. All relations are formed for rectangular cross-section for all possible cases of combinations of axial force and bending moment. To this end, five different stress-strain states are investigated and four limit axial force values are defined in the present research. The nonlinear problem is solved in MATLAB mathematical software environment. Stress-strain states in the cross-sections are investigated in detail and graphically analysed for two numerical experiments.

This paper deals with the problem of eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors for rings whose cross section may be decomposed in basic rectangular cross sections. The solution is derived from a solution of the in-plane eigenvalue problem for rectangular cross-section thick rings. A good agreement between theoretical results and experimental data is obtained.

Specimens of rectangular and circular cross section of a Mg-9Al binary alloy have been tensile tested and the cross section of undeformed specimens examined using scanning electron microscopy. The rectangular cross sections showed three scales in the cellular intermetallics network: coarse at the core, fine at the surface and very fine at the corners, whereas the circular ones showed only two, coarse at the core and fine at the surface. The specimens of rectangular cross section exhibited higher yield strength in comparison to the circular ones. Possible reasons for the observed increased strength of the rectangular sections are discussed.

In this paper, helix tails with rectangular cross-section were designed for propelling a kind of flagella-like swimming robot. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software was applied to analyze the major influencing factors of the robots mechanical properties. It is revealed that the thrust reaches the maximum when the helix tails cross-section width is 0.36 times the diameter. Meanwhile, the helix tails should be designed according to the requirements with the largest diameter, close to but less than 45° helix angle and multi-turns under the limitation of the workspace. Combining these simulation data with the derivation process of Resistive Force Theory, the models for the mechanical properties simulation of the swimming robot were revised, and the explicit empirical formula of propulsive force is obtained. This model lays a good foundation for the robots motion control as well as unified mathematical description for macro-scale and micro-scale robots.

In order to investigate the two-phase flow behavior during countercurrent flow limitation in the hot leg of a pressurized water reactor, two test models were built: one at the Kobe University and the other at the TOPFLOW test facility of Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (FZD). Both test facilities are devoted to optical measurement techniques; therefore, a flat hot leg test section design was chosen. Countercurrent flow limitation (CCFL) experiments were performed, simulating the reflux condenser cooling mode appearing in some accident scenarios. The fluids used were air and water, both at room temperature. The pressure conditions were varied from atmospheric at Kobe to 3.0 bars absolute at TOPFLOW. According to the presented review of literature, very few data are available on flooding in channels with a rectangular cross section, and no experiments were performed in the past in such flat models of a hot leg. Commonly, the macroscopic effects of CCFL are represented in a flooding diagram, where the gas flow rate is plotted versus the discharge water flow rate, using the nondimensional superficial velocity (also known as Wallis parameter) as coordinates. However, the classical definition of the Wallis parameter contains the pipe diameter as characteristic length. In order to be able to perform comparisons with pipe experiments and to extrapolate to the power plant scale, the appropriate characteristic length should be determined. A detailed comparison of the test facilities operated at the Kobe University and at FZD is presented. With respect to the CCFL behavior, it is shown that the essential parts of the two hot leg test sections are very similar. This geometrical analogy allows us to perform meaningful comparisons. However, clear differences in the dimensions of the cross section (H×W=150×10 mm2 in Kobe, 250×50 mm2 at FZD) make it possible to point out the right characteristic length for hot leg models with rectangular cross sections. The hydraulic diameter, the channel height, and the Laplace critical wavelength (leading to the Kutateladze number) were tested. A comparison of our own results with similar experimental data and empirical correlations for pipes available in literature shows that the channel height is the characteristic length to be used in the Wallis parameter for channels with rectangular cross sections. However, some limitations were noticed for narrow channels, where CCFL is reached at lower gas fluxes, as already observed in small scale hot legs with pipe cross sections.

This paper deals with the crashworthiness of an aluminum crash box for an auto-body with the various shapes of cross section such as a rectangle, a hexagon and an octagon. First, crash boxes with various cross sections were tested with numerical simulation to obtain the energy absorption capacity and the mean load. In case of the simple axial crush, the octagon shape shows higher mean load and energy absorption than the other two shapes. Secondly, the crash boxes were assembled to a simplified auto-body model for the overall crashworthiness. The model consists of a bumper, crash boxes, front side members and a sub-frame representing the behavior of a full car at the low speed impact. The analysis result shows that the rectangular cross section shows the best performance as a crash box which deforms prior to the front side member. The hexagonal and octagonal cross sections undergo torsion and local buckling as the width of cross section decreases while the rectangular cross section does not. The simulation result of the rectangular crash box was verified with the experimental result. The simulation result shows close tendency in the deformed shape and the load–displacement curve to the experimental result.
