Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease of undetermined etiology involving primarily the synovial membranes and articular structures of multiple joints. The disease is often progressive and results in pain, stiffness, and swelling of joints. In late stages, deformity and ankylosis develop. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause significant extra-articular manifestations most probably related to systemic inflammation. Hence based on above findings the present study was planned for Evaluation of Lipid Profile in Cases Suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis. The present study was planned in Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital, Gaya, Bihar, India. In the present study 50 patients were evaluated. Out of that 25 cases of the arthritides were enrolled in Group A and remaining 25 control cases were evaluated in the Group B. For the biochemical parameters to be analyzed, blood sample were drawn from the anticubital vein avoiding venostasis. In all subjects a blood sample was collected after an overnight fast plain vials are used for the determination of lipid profile, Total cholesterol and HDL Cholesterol were measured by Henly‟s method. Serum triglyceride was estimated by Rosenberg and Gottfrieds. The data generated from the present study concludes that the lipid profile is altered in Rheumatoid arthritis characterized by low TC and LDL with lower RA factor titres. However, the mean triglycerides, HDL, LDL, VLDL, TC/HDL and mean LDL/HDL did not show a significant difference between subgroups of the patients having different titres of RA factor. Pre-eclampsia is associated with substantial risks for the fetus and mother. Disorders of lipoprotein metabolism are reported to be a major cause of hypertension and proteinuria in pre-eclampsia. This was a cross-sectional comparative study carried out in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sylhet, M.A.G Osmani Medical College Hospital, Sylhet during December 2013 to May 2014. 50 pre-eclampsia and 50 normotensive pregnant women's serum lipid profile were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Fasting lipid profile was measured after 10-12 hours overnight fasting. The mean age (25.12 # 3.98 years vs 24.94 # 3.90 years; p=0.820), gestational age (36.80 # 0.70 weeks vs 36.9 # 1.1 weeks ; p=0.144), and BMI (21.43 # 2.09kg/M2 vs 22.02 # 1.73kg/M2, p=0.131) were statistically similar in both pre-eclamptic women and the control pregnant women. SBP (163.70 #11.24mm of Hg vs 115.10 # 9.39mm of Hg; p<0.001) and DBP (103.6 #9.4mm of Hg vs 71.50 #5.37mm of Hg p<0.001) were significantly higher in pre-eclamptic women than that of normotensive pregnant women. Serum total cholesterol (227.56 # 55.79mg/dl vs 194.56 # 43.33mg/dl, p=0.001). serum LDL-cholesterol (147.72 #51.03mg/dl vs 119.43 # 37.17mg/dl; p=0.002) and serum triglyceride (232.06 # 65.54mg/dl vs 157.44 # 64.24mg/dl p<0.001) were significantly higher in pre- eclampsia than that of normal pregnancy; while serum HDL- cholesterol (38.96 # 2.93 mg/dl vs 45.82 # 6.11 mg/dl; p <0.001) was significantly lower in pre-eclampsia than that of control pregnancy. An abnormal lipid profile has a direct effect on endothelial dysfunction. Background: Health problem are culturally associated with smoking in developing countries. Many hazardous chemicals are taken up by direct or passive smoking causing lipid peroxidation resulting in oxidative stress. Objectives: To estimate the occurrence of smoking and its effects on the lipid profile in populations of Hasilpur, Pakistan. Methodology: The current study was conducted from April - August 2014. Out of 247 apparently healthy subjects of both genders (male=220; female=27), 134 were smokers and 113 were non-smokers. In order to analyze lipid profile, blood samples were collected in early morning hours from the selected members who were asked to fast all night. By using Chem-100 chemistry analyzer, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL and VLDL were analyzed. Results: The overall prevalence of smokers was 54.25%. The results showed 60.9% prevalence in males and 0% in females. The mean value of serum triglyceride in control, light smokers and heavy smokers was 147.4±11.7mg/dl, 190.8±41.4 and 205.3±29.7mg/dl, respectively. The results of cholesterol in control, light smokers and heavy smokers were 147.38±7.99mg/dl, 136.8 ±12. 8mg/dl and 173.44±8.63mg/dl, respectively. There was a considerable distinction in the mean level of serum triglyceride and cholesterol between the control group, light smokers and heavy smoker groups (P<00.5). The mean value of HDL of control, light smokers and heavy smokers was 30.93±1.30mg/dl, 31.10±2.45 and 34.58±1.55mg/dl, respectively. The mean values of LDL and VLDL of control, light smokers and heavy smokers were 110.46±3.63mg/dl, 106.00±4.52mg/dl, 117.19±3.48mg/dl and 33.54±3.11mg/dl, 49±9.02mg/dl, 41.06±5.34mg/dl, respectively. There was significant difference in the mean level of HDL, LDL and VLDL between the control group, light smokers and heavy smoker groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: This study concluded that smoking is the reasons of variation in the lipid profile. Elevated period of smoking and the number of smoked cigarettes/day reason the alteration in serum lipid levels and is probably related with increased danger for coronary artery disease.

ABSTRACT Introduction Obesity is emerging as an epidemic worldwide. Obesity is associated with a number of comorbid conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancer, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular abnormalities, anemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and psychosocial abnormalities. Aim This study aims at comparing the lipid profile levels of obese and nonobese men. Materials and methods This was a case—control study conducted at a tertiary care center. Totally, 80 men in the age group of 20 to 47 years attending the master health checkup were included in the study, out of which 40 men with normal body mass index (BMI) of 18 to 25 belonged to group I and 40 men with increased BMI of 30 and above belonged to group II. Lipid profile parameters, such as triglycerides (TGLs), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were estimated in them. The data were statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 15.0. Results Statistically significant difference was found in the total cholesterol levels with a p-value of 0.040 while the difference in LDL cholesterol was statistically highly significant with a p-value of 0.040. Conclusion Among lipid profile parameters, only total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol showed significant difference between the obese and nonobese individuals. However, the other parameters like HDL cholesterol and TGLs did not show any significant difference. How to cite this article Babu SV, Jagadeesan AR, Ramalingam J. IntroductionAcute otitis externa (AOE) is a common but preventable ear condition. Tenderness with movement of the tragus or pinna is a classic feature of otitis Externa. Polymyxin B, neomycin, hydrocortisone preparations are the choice for first-line therapy when the tympanic membrane is intact. This study atiempted to compare the efficacy of polymyxin B, neomycin and polymyxin B, neomycin, hydrocortisone in the treatment of otitis Externa.ObjectiveTo compare the efficacy of polymyxin B, neomycin and polymyxin B, neomycin, hydrocortisone in the treatment of otitis Externa.MethodologyTo evaluate the efficacy of polymyxin B, neomycin and polymyxin B, neomycin, hydrocortisone in the treatment of otitis Externa, a hospital based, randomized, prospective study was conducted in Nepal Medical College and Teaching Hospital (NMCTH), Atiarkhel, Kathmandu from August 2012 to May 2014. 70 outpatients suffering from otitis Externa who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. Patients were randomized into group A and group B with lotiery system. Odd number patients were included in group A and even number patients in group B. Group A patients received pack soaked with ribbon gauge in polymyxin B, neomycin ointment and Group B patients received pack soaked with ribbon gauge in polymyxin B, neomycin, hydrocortisone ointment. The patients were called for follow up after 48 hours and 96 hours to assess the improvement on the basis of tragal and circumduction tenderness either present or absent (present 1 or absent 2). A decrease in the clinical signs and symptoms (i.e. tragal and circumduc_on tenderness) was noted. Absence of pain was considered as clinically cured.ResultsIn comparison to polymyxin B, neomycin group, hydrocortisone group exhibited statistically significant effectiveness after 48 hours of treatment (p<0.05), but in cure rates after 96 hours, no statistical significant difference was observed between two groups (p>0.05).ConclusionPolymyxin B, neomycin, hydrocortisone group showed higher and faster cure rates than polymyxin B, neomycin group in the treatment of otitis Externa at 48 hours follow up. Birat Journal of Health SciencesVol.2/No.1/Issue 2/ Jan - April 2017, Page: 162-167

Background: Control of the primary site of sepsis is the main determinant of good surgical outcome. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare the efficiency between povidone iodine and normal saline lavage in the treatment of acute peritonitis. Methodology: This was a randomized clinical trial conducted in the Department of Surgery at Dhaka Medical College & Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Patients with acute peritonitis due to gastrointestinal causes who were admitted in the different units of Dhaka Medical College Hospital during the study period were selected as study population. Among them patients who were treated with povidone iodine were enrolled in the present study in group A and patients who were treated with conventional normal saline were in group B. Results: A total number of 1050 patients were recruited for this study. Among them 100 patients were enrolled in the present study of which group A (50 patients) for povidone iodine and group B (50 patients) for conventional normal saline. On 7th POD wound infection was found in Group A and Group B were 11(22.4%) and 21(44.7%) respectively. Statistically significant difference in post operative complication of wound infection was observed on 7th POD between the groups (p<0.05). Post operative hospital stay in Group A and Group B were 11.50 ± 4.48 and 13.46 ± 5.13 days respectively. There is statistically significant difference in post operative hospital stay between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Statistically significant difference observed in post operative complication of wound infection and burst abdomen on 7th POD between the groups. The present study there is statistically significant difference in post operative hospital stay between the groups also observed. Bangladesh Journal of Infectious Diseases 2017;4(1):15-20

Background: Foods play an important role in human health. An excess accumulation of cholesterol in the body is one of the main causes of cardio vascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and mortality. In the interests of food safety and public health, plants and their compounds are now re-emerging as an alternative approach to treat gastrointestinal diseases. The present study was designed to discuss changes in blood cholesterol levels after the consumption of animal based (non vegetarian) and plant based (vegetarian) food on yoga practising medical students.Methods: Of 81 subjects, a total of 60 subjects within the age group 18 to 22 years were selected for the study and were divided into two groups, non-vegetarian diet group (group A; n=30) and vegetarian diet group (group B; n=30). Subjects in the group A were given a non vegetarian diet and group B a vegetarian diet for a period of 10 days. Assessments were done at baseline and after 10 days.Results: There were no statistically significant changes seen in the lipid profiles of group B and group A after the application of a paired t test. In this study the mean value of total cholesterol, serum triglyceride, serum LDL and serum VLDL were found to be slightly higher in vegetarian group than the non-vegetarian group. Mean value of serum HDL was found to be higher in non-vegetarian group than the vegetarian.Conclusions: The present study concludes that there are more changes in the pre and post lipid profile assessments of the vegetarian group in comparison to the non-vegetarian group.

The renin–angiotensin system (RAS) provides the most powerful regulation of blood pressure and angiotensin II is the primary mediator in this system. The binding of angiotensin II to AT1 receptors produces a number of potentially harmful effects that include increase in blood pressure, progression of atherosclerosis, myocardial and vascular hypertrophy. Losartan was the first ARB and found to reduce the risk of stroke, new onset of diabetes and to have a proven benefit in stroke. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of losartan on different biochemical parameters viz; blood sugar, lipid profile, uric acid and serum electrolytes. 29 newly diagnosed patients of either gender with essential hypertension were included in the study. Baseline readings of lipid profile, serum electrolytes, fasting blood sugar and uric acid were recorded before starting losartan monotherapy and were repeated after six months. After comparing the means, it was revealed that there was a significant increase in HDL cholesterol and a significant decrease in serum uric acid levels after six months of losartan therapy. No significant difference was found in blood sugar and electrolyte levels. These findings suggest that losartan can be an attractive option for the treatment of hypertension and for metabolic syndrome.

Background: Despite of wide spread use of prophylactic antibiotics and various antiseptic measures, post-operative infection remains one of the significant and serious complication of caesarean delivery contributing to high maternal morbidity and mortality. Objective was to study the incidence of post-operative infectious morbidities in patients with/without povidone iodine vaginal cleansing done prior to caesarean section.Methods: A prospective randomized control study was done in the department of obstetrics and gynecology of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital, New Delhi.Results: Mean age of participants in group A is 26.22±2.47 years and in group B is 26.48±2.3 years. Majority women (84.0%) underwent emergency lower segment caesarean section (LSCS). (6.4%) women developed post-operative endometritis, out of which maximum (4.6%) belong to no vaginal cleansing group (B) compared to 1.8% in povidone iodine vaginal cleansing group(A), which is statistically significant (p=0.01). Over all (13%) women had post-operative fever, with significant difference among the two groups i.e. (8.6%) were in group B versus (4.4%) in group A (p=0.005).Conclusions: Povidone iodine vaginal cleansing prior to caesarean section is significantly effective in reducing post-operative infectious morbidities.

Introduction: After SMR/septoplasty with or without turbinate surgery, it needs to keep apart the septum and turbinates upto their complete healing otherwise there is a chance of adhesion (synechia) formation. To prevent this there are variousprocedures. To place an intranasal splint in one or both sides of the septum is one of them. Nowadays there raised thequestion of whether the splinting is necessary or not. There is no significant difference in result with or without anintranasal splint. Weighing against the co-morbidities the routine use of an intranasal splint can no longer be justified. Materials and Methods: This is a randomized control study of 200 patients of SMR/septoplasty, done for nasal septaldeviation causing symptoms in Cumilla Medical College Hospital in the period of January 2016 to December 2019. Theywere equally divided into two groups, group-A were operated placing an intranasal splint and group-B with no intranasalsplint. They were followed up for 6 weeks to detect any synechia and co-morbidities. Result: The age of our patients wasranged from 13-49 years with a mean age of 22.45 years. The male to female ratio is 1.78:1. Synechia was found in 4% ofthe splinted group and 6 of the nonsplinted groups. Co-morbidities were detected more in the splinted group than that ofnon-splinted. In INS group these were found as follows: pain in the nose, face and head (26%), faint during removal ofnasal splint (6%), nasal obstruction (38%), the anxiety of splint removal in the postoperative period (35%) and vestibulitisdue to persistent irritation by a splint (17%). Conclusion: There is little significant advantage of using intranasal splintroutinely in septal surgery to prevent synechia formation. Medicine Today 2020 Vol.32(2): 126-129

This descriptive study was done in the Deponment of Physiology. Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. during the period of January 2008 to December 2008. The objective of the study was to measure pulse and blood pressure in smokers and nonsmoker adult male stroke patients and to find out changes in pulse and blood pressure among the smoker and non-smoker stroke patients. To accomplish this purpose 105 patient of over 20 years of age were selected. They were divided into two groups: Group A consisting of thirty n on-smoker and group B consisting of seven,' five smoker stroke patients. The finding showed that smoking caused no statistical significant difference 1p>0.05) in pulse and systolic blood pressure among she groups. Diastolic blood pressure was significantly higher (p<0.05) fill smokers than non-smokers. The study therefore provides the scope to understand the altered physiology of smoker stroke pollen's.
