Yoghurt was one form of beverage products from milk processing that utilizes microbes in the fermentation of fresh milk into a semi-solid emulsion product with a more acidic taste. The aim of this research was to know the effect of carrot juice and optimal addition were: color, organoleptic quality (aroma, texture, color and taste), vitamin C, WHC of yoghurt. The materials used were fresh milk, carrot juice, starter plain yoghurt. The method used in this research is experimental method with Randomized Completely Block Design of 5 treatments namely the addition of carrot juice in yoghurt with concentration 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% of milk volume (1000 ml), with each treatment was done with 4 blocks. The data analysis used variance analysis, followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the addition of carrot juice 20% in the manufacture of yoghurt with different concentrations gave a very significant effect difference (P<0.01) on the lightness (L*), yellowness (b*), vitamin C and WHC as well as a real effect (P <0,05) to the redness color (a*) and not not give significant effect (P>0,05) to pH, syneresis and lactic acid bacteria. The result showed that the concentration of adding carrot juice is 20%, which results in the best quality yogurt drink with the following average values of vitamin C; 15.13%, color; 59.95 (L), 19.30 (a *), 25.85 (b *), WHC; 25% and organoleptic; 3.75 (aroma), 3.98 (color), 3.40 (taste) 4.44 (texture), pH; 4.75Keyword: carrot juice, physical quality, yoghurt

Genotype-environment interactions (GEI) were assessed in 10 cherry tomato accessions in nine environments, including four artificial settings (0, 60 120, and 180 kg ha-1 of potassium) established on the experimental farms Montelindo (Palestina), Tesorito (Manizales), and CEUNP (Palmira) (Colombia). The plant material included 10 cherry tomato genotypes obtained from the germplasm bank at the Instituto Agronómico de Campinas and Tomato Genetics Resources Center (TGRC). A completely randomized block design with four blocks corresponding to the level of potassium fertilization was used (0, 60, 120, 180 kg ha-1); 0 kg ha-1 was the level reported for the soil. The effective size of the experiment unit was seven plants; the plot included the five central plants. A distance of 1.5 m between rows, 0.50 m between plants, and 2 m between blocks was used. The contents of soluble solids (°Brix), vitamin C (mg/100 g fresh weight), and lycopene (µg g-1 fresh weight) were assessed. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant differences (P<0.01) between the tomato genotypes, environments, and G×E interactions for the three assessed traits . The AMMI analysis identified similar and contrasting environments and determined the genotypes that contributed the most to the GEI. The environments with 120 and 180 kg ha-1 potassium favored the expression of vitamin C, while Palmira favored the lycopene content. The findings are useful for identifying optimal locations and elite genotypes that can be used as sources of variability in fruit quality improvement programs for cherry tomatoes.

This study aims to determine the concentration of starfruit juice and dragon fruit peel on the quality of jam. The experimental design used was a one-factor Randomized Block Design (RAK) with six treatments and three replications to obtain 18 samples. The treatments were the concentration of starfruit juice and dragon fruit peel extract with P1 (100% : 0%), P2 (85% : 15%), P3 (70% : 15%), P4 (55% : 45%), P5 ( 40% : 60%) and P6 (25% : 75%). Parameters observed were vitamin C levels, antioxidant activity, spread, and color as well as sensory tests (color, aroma, and taste). Data analysis results were tested by analysis of variance at a significance level of 5% using Co-Stat software. If there is a significant difference, then the orthogonal polynomial further test is carried out, while the physical and sensory tests are further tested using the Honest Significant Difference test at a significance level of 5%. The results showed that the concentration of star fruit juice and dragon fruit pulp did not have a different effect on vitamin C levels but had a significantly different effect on antioxidant activity, spread, and color. P6 treatment resulted in the highest antioxidant activity of 77.27%, 12.80 mg of vitamin C content, 10.1 cm of smearing power, and sensory properties that were acceptable to the panelists.

AbstractLonghorn beetles are commonly moved among continents within wood packaging materials used in trades. Visual inspections carried out at points of entry often fail to detect exotic longhorn beetles as infested materials may have little or no sign of colonization. Black-colored traps baited with pheromones and host volatiles are thus used to improve chances of detection. Here we tested whether existing surveillance protocols for longhorn beetles can be further improved using trap colors different than black. Baited traps of eight different colors (i.e., grey, yellow, green, red, blue, brown, purple and black) were deployed in a randomized complete block design at 16 sites in northern Italy in 2019. A total of 6,001 individuals from 56 longhorn beetle species were trapped. In general, yellow and blue traps caught a significantly higher number of longhorn beetle species than black traps. In addition, trap color significantly affected species richness and abundance at the subfamily and species level, with mixed response mostly linked to the habit of visiting flowers for food. Flower-visiting longhorn beetles mainly exhibited clear preference for flower-related colors, i.e., yellow, green and blue, whereas non-flower-visiting species were more attracted by dark and long-wavelength-dominated colors, like red and brown. Our results clearly indicate that generic surveillance programs should not rely exclusively on black traps and that the use of more trap colors can strongly improve the chance of detecting native and exotic longhorn beetles potentially moved with trades.

This study was carried out at Horticulture farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in order to find out the effects of bunch covering materials on physio-morphological characters and shelf life of banana cv. Mehersagar. The experiment was undertaken during the period from July to November 2016 with four types of bunch covering materials namely white polythene bag, black polythene bag, blue polythene bag and old cloth along with control (no bunch covering). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with five replications. The results of the investigation revealed that blue polythene bag required significantly minimum days to harvest (76.80 days) and maximum days to harvest (97.80 days) were recorded for control. Maximum bunch weight (19.90 kg), finger length (19.59 cm) and finger diameter (3.56 cm) were recorded for blue polythene bag whereas control showed minimum bunch weight (15.20 kg), finger length (14.57 cm) and finger diameter (3.07 cm). It was observed that blue polythene bag covered fruits showed minimum disease infection (2.33%), insect infestation (2.33%) and physiological disorder (1%) compared to control which experienced maximum disease infection (12.67%), insect infestation (50%) and physiological disorder (13.40%). Weight loss (11.18%), pulp moisture (66.16%), peel moisture (70.41%), disease infection (40%), disease severity (70.25%), skin colour change (4.95) were also lower in blue polythene bag than non covering control fruits. The bunches covered with blue polythene bag  exhibited superior results in respect of pulp thickness (3.45cm), pulp to peel ratio (2.49), pulp dry matter (33.84%), peel dry matter (29.59%), TSS (24.28 % Brix), shelf life (11.40 days) than the rest of bunch covering materials used in this study. Carotenoids, folate and vitamin C may contribute to the observed beneficial effects of increased vegetable intake. Currently, knowledge on the bioavailability of these compounds from vegetables is limited. We compared the efficacy of different vegetables, at the same level of intake (i.e. 300 g/d), in increasing plasma levels of carotenoids, folate and vitamin C and we investigated if disruption of the vegetable matrix would enhance the bioavailability of these micronutrients. In an incomplete block design, sixty-nine volunteers consumed a control meal without vegetables and three out of four vegetable meals (i.e. broccoli, green peas, whole leaf spinach, chopped spinach; containing between 1·7 and 24·6 mg β-carotene, 3·8 and 26 mg lutein, 0·22 and 0·60 mg folate and 26 and 93 mg vitamin C) or a meal supplemented with synthetic β-carotene (33·3 mg). Meals were consumed for 4 d and fasting blood samples were taken at the end of each period. Consumption of the spinach-supplemented meal did not affect plasma levels of β-carotene, although the β-carotene content was 10-fold those of broccoli and green peas, which induced significant increases in plasma β-carotene levels (28 (95 % CI 6·4, 55) % and 26 (95 % CI 2·6, 54) % respectively). The β-carotene-supplemented meal increased plasma concentrations of β-carotene effectively (517 (95 % CI 409, 648) %). All vegetable meals increased the plasma concentrations of lutein and vitamin C significantly. Broccoli and green peas were, when expressed per mg carotenoid consumed, also more effective sources of lutein than spinach. A significant increase in plasma folate concentration was found only after consumption of the spinach-supplemented meal, which provided the highest level of folate. Disruption of the spinach matrix increased the plasma responses to both lutein (14 (95 % CI 3·7, 25) %) and folate (10 (95 % CI 2·2, 18) %), whereas it did not affect the response to β-carotene. We conclude that the bioavailabilities of β-carotene and lutein vary substantially among different vegetables and that the bioavailabilities of lutein and folate from spinach can be improved by disruption of the vegetable matrix.

ABSTRACT Okra, Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench, is a vegetable with annual fruit native to hot regions of Africa, well adapted to the conditions of the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil, where it is widely used by small farmers. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mineral and organic fertilization on the production and quality of okra fruits. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design, with three replicates and eleven treatments defined according to a Baconian matrix. Treatments consisted of doses of N (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1), P (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1) and K (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1), as well as absence and presence of organic compost (30 t ha-1). The following parameters were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, production of fruits plant-1, number of fruits plant-1, fruit length and diameter and fruit quality (pH, soluble solids, titratable acidity, vitamin C and electrical conductivity). The crop is demanding in terms of K and N fertilizations, with increments of 15.8 and 36% in the mean number and diameter of fruits, respectively. Organic fertilization did not influence the vegetative growth of okra, but was beneficial to the production of fruits with higher vitamin C content, 52% higher than the contents found in fruits produced without such input.

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is highly perishable and has potential for processing industries in bumper producing seasons in Nepal. The study on judicious use of nitrogen and potassium levels was aimed to explore the quality attributes along with the shelf life of tomato fruits. Three levels of nitrogen comprising 0 kg/ha (N0), 100 kg/ha (N100), 200 kg/ha (N200) and four levels of potassium 0 K2O kg/ha (K0), 80 K2O kg/ha (K80), 160 K2O kg/ha (K160), 240 K2O kg /ha (K240) were used as treatments in randomized complete block design with three replications at Chitwan (Inner Terai) Nepal. Tomatoes at breaker stage were harvested from the field and 10 fruits from each treatment per replication were kept for physiological weight loss, color rating and shelf life in ambient condition (17.5±3 0C and 80.5±6.5 % RH). Fruit quality with respect to physicochemical properties like firmness, TSS, TA, pH and Vitamin C was assessed at the end of shelf life. Higher potassium levels hasten color development and increased TSS, firmness and vitamin C content. Physiological weight loss was greatly reduced and extended shelf life was achieved with 100 kg N/ha and 240 kg K2O/ha.

Riset dengan tujuan untuk mengevaluasi teknik pengendalian penyakit KHV pada ikan mas melalui penggunaan imunostimulan yaitu penambahan vitamin C pada pakan komersial dengan dosis yang berbeda telah dilakukan pada skala laboratorium. Perlakuan yang diterapkan adalah penambahan vitamin C jenis CFC-90 (microencapsulated vitamin C) pada pakan komersial dengan berbagai dosis yaitu: (A) tanpa vitamin C, sebagai kontrol, (B) vitamin C sebanyak 250 mg/kg pakan, (C) vitamin C sebanyak 500 mg/kg pakan, (D) vitamin C sebanyak 750 mg/kg pakan, dan (E) vitamin C sebanyak 1.000 mg/kg pakan. Masing-masing perlakuan dilakukan pengulangan sebanyak 3 (tiga) kali. Pada hari ke-15, seluruh kelompok perlakuan diinfeksi KHV secara buatan dengan teknik kohabitasi. Pengamatan dilakukan terhadap tingkah laku, gejala klinis, dan mortalitas ikan uji yang dilakukan setiap hari hingga akhir percobaan. Rataan persen sintasan ikan uji tertinggi pada akhir riset diperoleh pada penambahan vitamin C sebanyak 750 mg/kg pakan yaitu sebesar 82,22%; diikuti dengan penambahan vitamin C 250 mg/kg pakan sebesar 70,00%; vitamin C 1.000 mg/kg pakan sebesar 61,11%; vitamin C 500 mg/kg pakan sebesar 58,89%; sedangkan rataan sintasan terendah diperoleh pada kelompok kontrol yaitu sebesar 27,78%.Research with the aim to evaluate the technique of KHV disease control carp through the use of immunostimulatory namely the addition of vitamin C in commercial diet with different doses have been performed in a laboratorial scale. The treatment applied was the addition of vitamin C of CFC-90 (microencapsulated vitamin C) in the commercial diet with different doses, namely: (A) without vitamin C, as control, (B) Vitamin C 250 mg/kg feed, (C) vitamin C of 500 mg/kg feed, (D) Vitamin C 750 mg/kg feed, and (E) of vitamin C as much as 1,000 mg/kg feed. Each treatment was repeated three times. On day 15th, all treatment groups were artificially infected with KHV using cohabitation techniques. Observations conducted to monitor behavior, clinical symptoms and mortality of fish tests were done every day until the end of the experiment. The highest mean percent of survival rate was recorded in treatment D by adding vitamin C as much as 750 mg/kg of feed that was equal to 82.22%, followed by the addition of vitamin C 250 mg/kg diets at 70.00% (treatment B), Vitamin C 1,000 mg/kg feed amounted to 61.11% (treatment E), vitamin C 500 mg/kg diets at 58.89% (treatment C), while the lowest average of survival rate was obtained in the control group that was equal to 27.78%.

Pod shattering is one of the major soybean constraints in Indonesia. This research aimed to evaluate the resistance of soybean F6 population to pod shattering and characterize the selected lines for their agronomic performances. The materials used were 147 F6 lines derived from six crossing combinations. The check varieties consisted of Dega 1, Detap 1, and Anjasmoro. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with two replications. At R8 stage, thirty pods were randomly detached from five sample plants of each line to be used for evaluation of pod shattering resistance using an oven-dry method. The variability of pod shattering was showed after the treatment of 60°C oven temperature. The shattering resistance of 147 F6 lines was classified into 52 highly resistant, 49 resistant, two moderately resistant, ten susceptible, and 34 highly susceptible lines. The pod-shattering resistant lines could be used for further improvement in the breeding program. Anjasmoro variety was effective to be used as gene source for shattering resistant. Simultaneous selection based on yield (30% selection intensity) and shattering resistance selected six lines which have early maturity and large seed size, hence they could be further evaluated in several locations in the next breeding stage.

The quality of vermicompost is determined by the kinds of media materials used, the degree ofmaturity, the worm species used and the manufacturing process. In this study using plantpakkoy pakkoy (Brassica rapa L.). The purpose of this study was to determine the optimumdose of three kinds of vermicompost for N, P and K nutrient uptake and growth response andyield of mustard pakcoy (Brassica rapa L.). The research was conducted at Agricultural Land inLandungsari Village, Dau District of Malang Regency with height ± 544 m asl. This research is afield experiment using factorial randomized block design (RAK) with control. Factor 1: VariousVermicompost Materials Factor 2: Application Dose. The resulting data were analyzed variance(ANOVA) with 5% BNJ and 5% Dunnet. Regression analysis was performed to find the optimumdose of vermicompost. The results showed that the growth and production of mustard plantpakcoy using vermicompost showed higher yield compared to control. In the treatment of V2D2(coconut husk + cow dung + leaf litter + rice straw + leftover vegetables with dose of 10 ton ha-1).
