Abstract Ruth Finnegan FBA OBE (1933, Derry, Northern Ireland) took a DPhil in Anthropology at Oxford, then joined the Open University of which she is now an Emeritus Professor. Her publications include Oral Literature in Africa (1970), Oral Poetry (1977), The Hidden Musicians: Music-Making in an English Town (1989), and Why Do We Quote? The Culture and History of Quotation (2011). Ruth Finnegan was interviewed by Sarali Gintsburg (ICS, University of Navarra) and Luis Galván Moreno (University of Navarra) on the occasion of an online lecture delivered at the Institute for Culture and Society at the University of Navarra. In this trialogue-like interview, Ruth tells about the childhood experiences that were decisive for her interest in orality and storytelling, about her education and training as a Classicist in Oxford, the beginnings of her fieldwork in Africa among the Limba of Sierra Leone, and her recent activity as a novelist. She stresses the importance of voice, of its physical, bodily dimensions, its pitch and cadence; and then affirms the essential role of audience in communication. The discussion then touches upon several features of African languages, classical Arabic and Greek, and authoritative texts of Western culture, from Homer and the Bible to the 19th century novel. Through discussing her childhood memories, her assessment of the development and challenges of anthropology, and her views on the digital transformation of the world, Ruth concludes that the notion of narrative, communication, and multimodality are inseparably linked.

The UNESCO declares that there are two approaches to preserve cultural heritage: one is to record it in tangible form and conserve it in an archive; the other is to preserve it in a living form by ensuring its transmission to the next generations. The establishment of SLT is in response to the second approach. This undertaking focuses on the transmission of indigenous knowledge (IK) to the young. It aims to encourage culture specialists to continue with their own work and train younger people to take place in the future. In order to preserve the Ayta Magbukon indigenous culture, the oral literature, traditional skills that included traditional dances, songs, chanting, traditional cooking and traditional medicines were documented using ethnographic approach as the method of collecting data and information. These data was presented again to the cultural masters for validation using the triangulation approach. Results show the significance of this data in the SLT Program in the transmission of the Ayta Magbukon indigenous culture to the young. The program will achieve its goals of culture preservation and the continuation of their wisdom from generation to generation as long as this kind of undertaking will have continuity even without outside intervention. Keywords: Social Science, culture preservation, living traditions, ethnography, descriptive design, Bataan, Philippines

This paper sets out to examine the translatability of Fulani oral poetry from Northern Cameroon, especially the mbooku genre, in a literary perspective. The corpus is gathered from selected oral poems that were transcribed and translated into German, English and French by different translators. The study reveals that it is possible to translate Fulani poems into European languages so that the target texts perform the same literary functions as the source texts, in spite of linguistic and cultural difficulties that occur during the transfer process. Thus, the author proposes a retranslation in which the content meets the form, taking into account some patterns of European modern poetry. He therefore advocates for retranslations of these poems from a purely literary perspective and would like to see translation studies focus more on the primary source of African orality.

Irish poetry is considered one of the oldest and most enriched sources of poetry in Europe. As a small nation with a less prominent contribution to world literature, the Irish have benchmarked some of their brightest examples in the form of Gaelic writings, and present an outstanding account of oral traditions and oral poetry that have passed down the generations to the contemporary 21st century. Their literature represents various facets of Irish culture, history, and socio-cultural aspects reflected through magical verses of poems, the nature of which has transcended generations and established itself in the history of Europe.

ABSTRACTA description of the verbal and nonverbal characteristics of the language of stock auctioneers and a comparison with oral poetry show that these auctioneers use an oral formulaic technique. It is suggested that this technique is a response to performance constraints which place a heavy load on short term memory. This hypothesis accounts for features of stock auction speech which are not recognized as characteristically oral formulaic as well as those which are. It also sheds light on two problems that have exercised students of oral literature: the effect of literacy and the role of memorization. These findings support the view that the difference between traditional oral formulaic and ordinary spoken language is one of degree, not kind.
