Bitter melon contains flavonoids that have anti-inflammatory function. Inflammation can be caused by protein denaturation. This research tested the anti-inflammatory potential of ethanol extract of leaves and bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and protein denaturation inhibition method. There were three experimental groups formed in this research including negative control group, positive control group, and test solutions. Diclofenac sodium was used in the positive control group at concentration series of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 ppm, obtaining a regression equation Y = 3.546X + 2.163 and r = 0.9990. Whilst, for bitter melon ethanol extract at a series of concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 ppm obtained a regression equation Y = 0.243X + 11.74 and r = 0.9995. The potential of diclofenac sodium as an anti-inflammatory agent was shown by IC50 of 13.490 µg / mL, while the ethanol extract of bitter melon fruit has an IC50 of 157.448 µg / mL. This result indicated that bitter melon ethanol extract had the potential as moderate anti-inflammatory agent.

Sea urchin (Echinometra mathaei) is one of the marine biota that contains high flavonoid and phenolic compounds that are potent as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. This study aimed to measure the anti-inflammatory activity of the 70% ethanol extract of sea urchins in male white rats induced by carrageenan. Anti-inflammatory activity test using 5 groups of rats selected randomly, each group consists of 5 rats. Negative control group, positive control group, and 3 groups of extracts (doses of 100, 200, and 400mg/kgBW). Each group was induced using 1% carrageenan subplantarly and the volume of edema was measured using a mercury plethysmometer every 30 minutes for 3 hours. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way Anova. The results showed that the percentage of inflammatory inhibition in the positive control group, and the Echinometra mathaei ethanol extract group (dose of 100, 200, and 400 mg/KgBW) showed a significant difference (P0.05) with the negative control group with a percentage value of Inflammation inhibition was 61.11%, 85.19%, 85.19%, and 74.07%, respectively. The administration of sea urchin ethanol extract at all doses had a higher percentage of anti-inflammatory than diclofenac sodium, but increasing the extract dose did not significant increase inflammatory inhibition. This research concluded that 70% ethanol extract of Echinometra mathaei at doses of 100, 200, 400 mg/KgBW has strong anti-inflammatory activity potential.

Antiplasmodial and analgesic effects of crude ethanol extract ofPiper guineensewas investigated in mice. The antiplasmodial and analgesic efficacy of the extract was judged on its ability to reduce parasitemia and writhing, respectively, in mice. The antiplasmodial screening involved treating infected mice with 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight of extract while the positive control group was given standard artesunate drug. The analgesic test was carried out by administering 1000, 1500, and 2000 mg/kg body weight of extract to three groups of healthy mice, respectively, after induction of pain with 0.75% acetic acid. The positive control group was given aspirin drug. Parasitemia was reduced by 28.36%, 43.28%, and 62.69% in a dose-dependent pattern in the curative test which was significantly different (P<0.05) from 96.03% of the standard drug. The reduction of writhing by mice given the extract was also dose-dependent (36.29, 45.43, and 59.07%). Aspirin drug was however more effective (86.36%). The extract was safe at 2000 mg/kg body weight. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, phlobatannins, terpenoids, and coumarins. Result obtained in this study demonstrated the efficacy of ethanol extract ofPiper guineenseas an antiplasmodial and analgesic agent.

Background: The god’s crown fruits have properties as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory. Toxic doses of paracetamol can injure the liver through toxic metabolite bonds with cytoplasmic proteins that cause free radicals to form. The aim of this research is to know the effect of the crown of gods extracts on paracetamol hepatotoxicity. Method: A total of 30 of Webster swiss mice with a weight of ± 20 grams, age 3 months were randomly assigned to five groups, negative control, positive control, treatment 1,2 and 3. A 70% ethanol extract of god’s crown fruit given in doses 60mg, 120mg and 240mg per kgBB mice. The extract was administered for 14 days in the treatment groups, then on day 15 paracetamol ware administered in a given dose 300mg/kgBB for 1 day for the positive control group and treatment groups. On day 16, the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were examined from the orbital sinuses and animals terminated liver tissues taken and immediately fixed in 10% buffer formalin for histological examination. Results and Discussion: The 70% ethanol extract of the god’s crown fruits decreased blood serum levels of AST and ALT, and these results were supported by histopathologic scores of the liver in which histopathologic scores were improved with the increasing doses (p < 0.05). The secondary metabolite contents of the god’s crown fruit extract served as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, protecting hepatic injury from the toxic metabolite of paracetamol. Conclusion: A 70% ethanol extract of god’s crown fruit (Phaleria macrocarpa) have hepatoprotective properties that effectively prevent hepatic injury due to paracetamol toxic dose.

Se-allylselenocysteine (ASC), an analogue of garlic compound, has been shown to inhibit mammary carcinogenesis in vivo and cell growth in vitro. However, the function of ASC on anti-inflammatory effects remains largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated whether ASC has an anti-inflammatory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) -induced inflammation or an anti-tumour effect promoting on DMBA/TPA-induced skin tumorigenesis and tried to elucidate the mechanisms involved. Herein, the results showed that ASC inhibited LPS-induced production of nitric oxide (NO) with a decreased protein level of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in RAW 264.7 cells. However, ASC enhanced LPS-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein levels and mRNA expression. Interestingly, we found for the first time that topical application of ASC on the dorsal skin of DMBA-initiated and TPA-promoted mice significantly accelerated skin tumorigenesis and raised tumour multiplicity as compared to the positive control group (DMBA/TPA). The number of tumours that were 1–3 mm, 3–5 mm, and >5 mm in size per mouse increased in a dose-dependent manner in the ASC pre-treated groups. Pre-treatment with ASC showed a significant increase in the expression of COX-2 compared with the positive control group. In summary, that ASC may modulate the COX-2 protein expression and promoting DMBA/TPA-induced skin cancer in mice.

Sea cucumber, Holothuria scabra, can be found abundantly in Indonesian seas, which is also known to possess several medicinal properties. Spirulina platensis is another marine resources that has recently been extensively researched for its medicinal ability, such as anti-inflammatory effect. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of H. scabra extract combined with S. platensis extract in reducing inflammation. This study uses male Wistar rats as the study animal. Inflammation was induced by injecting carrageenan solution into the mice paw. Combination of H. scabra and S. platensis extract with various combination ratio (1:1; 1:2; and 2:1) was applied to the mice paw. Diclofenac sodium was used as the standard control therapy. Edema inhibition rate and anti-inflammatory efficacy were measured by analyzing the edema size and calculating the edema difference. Combination of H. scabra and S. platensis with 1:1 ratio has the largest edema inhibition volume compared to the other treatments. H. scabra and S. platensis combination outperforms the positive diclofenac sodium control group in terms of edema inhibition. The highest anti-inflammatory effect is obtained in the combination of H. scabra and S. platensis with 1:2 ratio, however, the anti-inflammatory efficacy is not as potent as the positive control. The effectivity of Holothuria scabra and Spirulina platensis extract in reducing the edema might be caused by their ability to reduce the levels of several inflammatory markers, including IL-6, NO, MMP9, and COX-2. This result suggests that H. scabra and S. platensis combination has anti-inflammatory effect shown in mice paw edema model.
