Açaí is a tropical fruit, typical of the Amazon and has been drawing attention due to its antioxidant capacity and high content of anthocyanins, responsible for several pharmacological and medicinal properties, as well as potential use as a natural dye. Due to the high perishability, the development of new products from the açaí power, which present greater stability to the storage time are being produced. The evaluation period was 25 days at a temperature of 25°C. The following parameters were evaluated: ascorbic acid, chlorophyll, total anthocyanins, total flavonoids, total polyphenols and antioxidant activity by ABTS●+ and DPPH● methods. Microbiological analysis were performed for Coliforms at 35°C and 45°C, Mesophiles, Staphylococcus coagulase positive, Molds, Yeasts, and Salmonella sp. The contents of ascorbic acid, total polyphenols and flavonoids differed statistically (p ˂ 0.05) from each other, throughout the storage. However, the antioxidant activity by the DPPH● method remained stable and the microbiological analysis remained within the current legislative standards. It is concluded that the açaí powder maintained its properties throughout the storage, being an excellent source of bioactive and phenolic compounds.

There are about 30 different types of blueberries. In Bulgaria, there are 4 species of genus Vaccinium - red (vitis-idaea), black (myrtillus), blue (uliginosum) and Caucasian (arctostaphylos). Bilberries are a source of carotene, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin D, manganese, soluble and insoluble fibres like pectin. Blueberries contain significant amounts of anthocyanidins, antioxidants and ellagic acid. The main wealth of blueberries are the antioxidants that bind free radicals and thus prevent malignant tumors. This is why blueberry is an excellent remedy for oncology. Objective of study was to investigate the content of total polyphenols, antioxidant activity and total anthocyanins of bilberry depending on altitude. Systematic approach and critical analysis of the available scientific periodicals and DPPH method for determining the antioxidant activity (radical trapping activity). It has been established a direct relationship between altitude and antioxidant activity. In the range of 900 to 1450 m the relationship between altitude and total anthocyanins is inversely proportional. After 1500 m, the dependency becomes proportional. There is no correlation between pH, total polyphenols and titratable acidity.

AbstractRecently, edible flowers (EF) have aroused increased interest because of their aesthetic properties as well as potential health benefits related to the occurrence of some bioactive compounds. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the total phenolics, anthocyanins, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity (AOA) (following DPPH and ABTS methods) in eleven EF. The samples were subjected to three successive extraction steps using methanol, and these extracts were then analysed for the aforementioned properties using spectrophotometric methods. The obtained extracts were used for the quantification of phenolic composition and AOA. The results indicated that, among the flowers analysed in this study, red rose, pink rose, and red carnation possessed the highest total phenolic contents (27.53, 23.30, and 18.17 mg g−1 gallic acid equivalents, respectively), total anthocyanins (3.07, 1.97, and 4.47 mg g−1 catechin equivalents [CE], respectively), and AOA (12.07, 15.77, and 12.93 mg g−1 TE, respectively, as given by the DPPH method or 8.23, 9.27 and 8.00 mg g−1 TE, respectively, as given by the ABTS method). The flowers with highest flavonoids contents were red carnation, Mexican marigold, and pink rose (17.50, 16.90, and 16.57 mg g−1 CE, respectively). Cluster analysis grouped the analysed flowers into two groups, those richest in phenolics with AOA and those not so rich. Finally, some important correlations were observed between the total phenolics and the AOA. In conclusion, these flowers could represent a potential source of natural compounds with antioxidant capacity.

Crataegusfruit is one of most important fruits in Tunisian flora. Some fruits of this genus are edible. This study was undertaken in order to examine the benefits of these fruits in human health and their composition of antioxidants including total polyphenol, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins content, and total anthocyanins. The antioxidative properties of the ultrasonic methanolic extract were assessed by different in vitro methods such as the FRAP, DPPH, andβ-carotene/linoleic acid assay. We concluded that peel fraction of red fruits possessed relatively high antioxidant activity and might be a rich source of natural antioxidants in comparison with the pulp and seed fruit extract. The results also showed that hawthorn yellow fruit presents lower amounts of phenolic content, absence of anthocyanins, and less antioxidant capacity. Most of peel and seed fractions were stronger than the pulp fractions in antioxidant activity based on their DPPH IC50, FRAP values, and results ofβ-carotene/linoleic acid. The total phenolic compounds contents were also highly correlated with the DPPH method and the FRAP assay.

Malabar plum [Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston.] is a tropical plant which is used as a medicinal plant, because it contains secondary metabolites, especially in the leaves. The different leaves developmental stages can affect physiological changes, especially metabolic processes, so it is suspected to affect the antioxidant content and activity. The objective of this research was to study the difference of leaves morphology, chlorophyll contents, antioxidant contents, and activity at the different leaves developmental stages. Samples were taken from Kaliboto Village, Purworejo, Central Java. The leaf color measurement was using colorimetry; determination of chlorophyll, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, and total phenol content is was using spectrophotometry; and antioxidant activity was using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively, while quantitative data were analyzed by ANOVA tests. The results showed that the higher level of leaves development, the higher pigment content, total phenol, and antioxidant activity ascorbic acid content in the mature leaves is lower when compared to the young and old leaves. The results of this research provide the information that can support the use of Malabar plum leaves in traditional medicinal activity and pharmaceutical industry, as well as basic information for plant breeding.

Leaf methanolic extracts of four wild Rose species (Rosa canina L., R. corymbifera Borkh., R. micrantha Borrer ex Sm and R. sempervirens L.) grown in Sicily were analysed in order to evaluate differences among indigenous roses which could be used such as source of bioactive compounds and natural antioxidants. Leaves were harvested during two different periods (June and October) and their morphological characteristics were described. Leaf content of chlorophylls, total anthocyanins, total flavonoids, total polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu method) and antioxidant activity (DPPH method) were determined. Results showed that the contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids were higher in leaves of all species harvested in June than in those harvested in October. On the contrary, total anthocyanins of R. micrantha and R. corymbifera leaves were higher in October. Total polyphenol content was higher in leaves of all species were harvested in October. No difference in total flavonoids content was recorded between the two harvest periods but only among the four species. Antioxidant activity was generally high in leaf extracts of all species in both periods and, particularly, in R. micrantha leaves harvested in June. These outcomes seem to support the assessment that leaves harvested from some Sicilian wild roses may be used as promising source of healthy compounds and that their content varies with the species and harvest period.

Our study aimed to analyze some qualitative aspects of five landraces of the tomato “Piennolo,” typical of the Vesuvian area, Italy, and determine the in vitro antioxidant activity. All samples showed a high °Brix value and acidity, as well as a discrete amount of reducing sugars, indicating their good quality as fresh products. They showed a high content of lycopene (up to 218 μg g−1 of fresh product) and ascorbic acid (up to 238 μg g−1 of fresh product). The content of total polyphenols was never less than 278 μg g−1 of fresh product. Hyperoside, chlorogenic and gallic acids were the most abundant polyphenols. The interrelationships between the parameters analyzed and the different landraces showed that total polyphenols could have mostly affected (ρ = 0.76) the antioxidant activity more than lycopene (ρ = −0.96). The interrelationships between the most abundant polyphenols and antioxidant activity showed that hyperoside, although the most abundant, negatively affected (ρ = −0.93) the antioxidant activity. Due to the high content of lycopene, ascorbic acid, and hyperoside, the five landraces of the tomato “Piennolo” could be considered promising in terms of their potential healthy characteristics.

Cardiospermum halicacabum is conventionally used in the treatment of stiffness of limbs, chronic bronchitis, and snakebites. The whole plant of Cardiospermum halicacabum has been extracted using ethanol and aqueous solvent and estimation of their antioxidant activity done for predicted current research work. Both ethanol and aqueous extracts illustrate important antioxidant activity in the DPPH method, nitric oxide method, and hydroxyl radical-induced In-vitro assay method. The DPPH radical inhibition (%) was 53.13, 57.13, and 79.12 for EECH, AECH, and Standard ascorbic acid respectively. The Cardiospermum halicacabum extracts (EECH and AECH) showed significant free radical scavenging action against nitric oxide (NO) induced release of free radicals at the concentrations 250μg/ml, showing 29.22% and 63.32% of nitric oxide inhibition, respectively. The EECH and AECH extracts (25-400μg/ml) significantly scavenged the hydroxyl radical generated by the EDTA/HO system, when compared to that of ascorbic acid. The plant Cardiospermum halicacabum has been used to treat different ailments. The present study clearly showed that both the extracts viz. EECH and AECH of the plant possess significant antioxidant activity. Moreover, ethanolic extract was proved as more potent candidature as compared to aqueous extract. The molecular level mechanism is the future interest of the researchers to prove the traditional use of the plant.
