This article is a continuation of the series ‘Figurative comparisons and eponyms in functional diagnostics’ systematized figurative comparisons and eponyms used in echocardiography. The contribution of great scientists to medicine is reflected here. They left their names in the name of the medical terms that they discovered (the names of diseases and syndromes, normal and pathological structures of the heart) in the form of eponymous names: Doppler, Menkeberg, Lambl Eustachio, Chiari, Valsalva, Fallo, Ebstein, Botallo, Lutembacher, Marfan, Barlow and others. Figurative comparisons are also described: ‘fish mouth’, ‘mercedes’, ‘smiley’, ‘hockey stick’, ‘dagger’, ‘scream of a seagull’, ‘candle flame’, ‘bull’s eye’, ‘snow storm’, etc. The terms given in the article have not only scientific, but also applied meaning. The terms will be useful and interesting to medical students, residents graduate students and practical doctors (doctors of functional and ultrasound diagnostics, cardiologists). This article will help test and possibly update their knowledge.

The article presents a summary of figurative comparisons and eponyms that are used in modern cardiology and functional diagnostics. Links are given to the sources in which these names were first used.There are a lot of great scientists leaving their names in the name of the medical terms they discovered. The contribution of this scientists is reflected: Einthoven, Wilson, Pardee, Cabrera, Chapman, de Winter, Prinzmetal, Bazett and others. Syndromes of Wellens, Brugada, Romano-Ward, Wolff-Parkinson-White, Clerc-Levy-Critesco, Chatterjee and others, and figurative comparisons are briefly described: “cat back”, “death wing”, “bull terrier muzzle”, “torsades de pointes”, “epsilon-wave”, “Salvador Dali’s mustache”, “saw teeth”, “shield and sword”, etc. All the terms given in the article have not only scientific, but also, most important, applied meaning. The article will be useful not only for students of medical universities, residents and graduate students, but also to practical doctors, whom it will help test her knowledge.

The lack of a sufficient amount of anatomical material in Ukrainian medical universities has led to the fact that medical students have to work with the bodies of long-dead people whose condition is of a low educational value. Therefore, animal organs are becoming increasingly important in teaching anatomical disciplines. For example, when studying the eyeball at the department of human anatomy, a bull's eye is used; organs of pigs and rats (larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, heart, etc.) are used for the purpose of comparative anatomy. Working with the heart of animals, students can learn to suture wounds of the heart using various surgical techniques, perform mitral commissurotomy. To put various types of liver sutures and to perform on liver resection at practical classes, pork or beef liver can be successfully used. Isolated stomach and intestines are indispensable for developing skills of surgical interventions on the hollow organs of the gastrointestinal tract. When studying a human skeleton, it is very helpful to use mock-ups that were obtained using a 3D printer that arouses the interest of students and increases the effectiveness of practical training. In the absence of anatomical material, medical students use the latest computer technology that allows them to study the human body in three dimensions. However, technical means make it possible to obtain only visual information, ignoring the volumetric and spatial characteristics of the objects under study that is their considerable drawback.

The laboratory genetic counselor is commonly called upon to serve as an educational resource within the genetic testing laboratory. This chapter outlines this unique genetic counseling role. Laboratory genetic counselors provide education about genetic testing and genetic concepts within the laboratory to existing laboratory staff, new laboratory genetic counselor colleagues, formal educational program participants (genetic counselor interns, graduate students, medical students and residents, and laboratory fellows), and laboratory colleagues. They also use their skills and knowledge to educate client laboratories and clinicians. They may also participate in public and community forums.

In this contribution I will analyse how medical students in their 5th year explain medical terms to simulated patients (SP) and which functions fulfil their inserted descriptionsin the explanation process. Two simulated doctor-patient conversations selected from a corpus of 273 conversations constitute the object of my study. They were videotaped in the training module Translating medical terminology in everyday language, constituting part of a simulation training (PJ-STArT-Block) for medical students at Cologne University. The analysing tools employed are the functional pragmatic approach to discourse and, more specifically, the speech action patterns “explaining” and “describing” as well as aspects fromconversation analysis regarding the role of the hearer. First, I will discuss how and to what extent the students’ and the SP’s general speech mode is influenced by the simulation itself.Then, I will analyse two exemplary transcribed excerpts of the exchanges, focussing primarily on the speaker. I will demonstrate that the addressees of the descriptions that introduce or interrupt an explanation are not primarily the hearers but actually the speakers themselves who need this communication phase to activate, to structure and to phrase their knowledge. In the conclusion I will recommend further linguistic research particularly on SP’s speech in simulated consultations.

Abstract Background The overlap of burnout and depression is a phenomenon that can effectively reflect the psychological state of a group. However, whether burnout is a type of depression is still debated in current research. The high incidence of burnout and depressive symptoms among medical students indicates that it is urgent to provide appropriate health services for them. However, the proportion of burnout and depression in the overlapping symptoms experienced by medical students, and the characteristics of the relative influencing factors, remain unclear. Therefore, we addressed these issues for neurology graduate students in China. Methods Using data from a cross-sectional survey of Chinese neurology graduate students, a diagnostic model was established according to their burnout and/or depression symptoms. Burnout was assessed by using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Depression symptoms were assessed with a two-item depression screening tool for primary care evaluation of mental disorders. Univariate analyses with chi-squared tests were conducted to assess associations between variables. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to analyze the effects of multiple factors on dependent variables. The factors included demographic information and three medical-study related problems. Results In total, 32.2% of surveyed students evidenced overlapping burnout and depression symptoms. Students with depressive symptoms tended to be included in the burnout students’ category. In the regression model, being unmarried, having children, and career choice regret were related to students who had only burnout, while the students with overlapping symptoms were affected by more factors such as family income, the consideration of dropping out once. Conclusions The symptoms and related factors of burnout and depression among Chinese neurology postgraduates have obvious overlap and show a significant trend. The occurrence of depressive symptoms among medical students is closely related to whether they are burned out. Students with only burnout were common, but students with only depressive symptoms were uncommon. Finally, burnout may be a pre-depression state.

Summary The article deals with the phonetic and orthographic adaptation of Latin terms in English clinical terminology in the context of Latin terminological competence formation of foreign medical students with English as the language of instruction. About 8,000 of the most common clinical terms selected from various lexicographic English sources have been studied on the basis of etymological and comparative approaches to demonstrate the grade of inconsistency in the reflection of Latin terms in modern English medical terminology. The quantitative analysis allowed us to determine and classify the main tendencies in the process of phonetic and orthographic development of Latin terms: (1) imitation of classical Latin spelling; (2) ‘simplification’ of classical Latin spelling; (3) syncretism of the first and second tendencies (parallel use of classical Latin and ‘simplified’ variants as synonyms). The analysis has also identified in some cases the phenomenon of ‘hypercorrectness’. The lack of a unified norm is reflected in all the analyzed reference sources, complicating the lexicographic description of medical terms as well as the process of teaching / learning the medical terminology. The proposed solution is to develop and implement some unified criteria for phonetic and orthographic adaptation of Latin terms in English. The possible ways to solve the problem are either to adhere to the etymological principle, returning ad fontes of medical terminology, and to use only non-monophthongized and non-simplified forms or to use monophthongized and phonetically and graphically simplified forms following the norms of modern English. Consistent adherence to one system of rules for the development of Latin terms is a needed requirement for the proper formation of terminological competence in medical students and correct use of terminology in their further professional activity.

Статья представляет собой изложение результатов предварительного эксперимента, связанного с изучением динамических аспектов ассоциативной структуры значения медицинских терминов в индивидуальном сознании студентов медицинского вуза с разной степенью сформированности профессиональных компетенций. Проведенный анализ данных психолингвистического эксперимента позволяет обнаружить закономерности в изменении ассоциативного пространства терминологической единицы в строящемся профессиональном сознании будущего медика. The article shows the results of the preliminary experiment connected to the study of dynamic aspects of the associative structure of medical terms’ meaning in the individual consciousness of medical students with different degree of professional competence. Complex usage of the experiment’s data reveals the regularity in changing of the associative space of a term in the forming professional consciousness of a future doctor.

Background: Teaching of anatomy is based on cadaver dissection. Islamic values regarding permission of dead body use for learning purpose and recent introduction of Problem based learning has led to false belief that dissection is of no more help in understanding Anatomy. Objective: To access the views of post and under graduate students whether dissection sessions done at undergraduate level have helped them in better understanding anatomy. Methods: Questionnaires were distributed among 60 postgraduate medical students and 60 undergraduate students. The questionnaire comprised questions relating to experience of dissection for postgraduate students who have done dissection during their undergraduate classes. Results: There was a statistically significant % of students who found dissection beneficial for post graduation. Conclusion: Dissection should be a part of study in medical schools.

We consider the issues of studying medical terminology in the lessons of the Russian language with a foreign audience. Medical terminology is a macroterminosystem consisting of subsystems (anatomical and histological, clinical, pharmaceutical), each of which has its own characteristics. This phenomenon must be considered in creating a system of tasks and exercises for teaching Russian as a foreign language to medical students. We analyze the methods of semanticization of medical terms, describe the principles of planning the program of the Russian language course for foreign medical students, suggest methods for developing the skills of dialogical speech at different stages of the lesson. We review and group the most productive methods of language aspects teaching, their use in writing and speaking; we present the criteria for the selection of educational material aimed at the formation and improvement of phonetic, lexical, grammatical, morphological and syntactic skills. Listening is a mandatory component of any Russian as a foreign language lesson. We present the possible topics and options for working with anatomical and clinical terminology. We conclude that teaching the language of the specialty for medical stu-dents should be diverse, multidisciplinary and include work to realize three main aims: teaching, developing and educational.
