Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) cases are still occur in Indonesia, mainly due the imbalance of nutrients intake and it can lead to the growth retardation, either physical or mental. The most important period of the gestational age is atthe first trimester because the formation of various vital organs of the fetus occurs. The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between energy and protein adequacy level with the occurance of CED in the first trimester of pregnant women. This research was an observational analytic study with cross sectional design. The number of sample taken was 22 people which randomly selected. The data was analyzed using chi square and fisher exact test (α = 0,05). The results showed that there were 50% of pregnant women having Chronic Energy Deficiency and 50% did not have Chronic Energy Deficiency. Based on cross-tabulation, pregnant women who have low protein adequacy level have a similar CED prevalence with good protein adequacy level. There was no relationship between carbohydrate (p = 1,000), protein (p = 1,000), and fat (p = 0,635) adequacy level with CED in pregnant women (p > 0,05).

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infection is an infectious disease that has a high prevalence with unclear clinical symptoms and predominantly affects children in the age range of 5–14 years. AIM: This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for STH infections in elementary school students in an STH endemic area. METHODS: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design with a total sampling method. Risk factors were obtained by a questionnaire, and the diagnosis of STH infection was established through a fecal examination with the modified Kato-Katz method. The data are then processed and analyzed using the SPSS application. Chi-square test and risk assessment are used to determine risk factors for STH infection. RESULTS: A total of 138 children participated in this study. The prevalence of STH infections obtained was 56.5% with Trichuris trichiura (53.8%), Ascaris lumbricoides (18%), and both (28.2%) as etiology. The degree of STH infection varies from mild-to-severe. All risk factors related to hygiene and sanitation have a statistically significant relationship with the prevalence of STH infections. Eating while playing on the ground was the most influential risk factor for the high prevalence of STH infections (p <0.001, PR = 2.611, CI 95% = 1.961–3.477). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of STH infections in elementary schoolchildren in Tenganan village was 56.5%. Low personal hygiene and sanitation are risk factors for STH infection that can be overcome; therefore, it is necessary to introduce early prevention efforts in elementary schoolchildren as one risk group for STH infection.

Abstract Objective: To estimate the prevalence of back pain in adolescent girls, and determine whether this pain is associated with socioeconomic, demographic, anthropometric, and behavioral factors. Methods: This was an epidemiological survey with a representative sample of 495 female high school students, aged 14 to 18 years, in the municipality of São Leopoldo in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire with closed, standardized, coded, and tested questions. Bivariate analysis included the chi-square test (x2) and calculation of prevalence ratios (α<0.05). Results: The prevalence of back pain was 75.2%. The thoracic-lumbar (30.4%) and lumbar (27.7%) regions of the spine were most affected. Among the students with pain, 60.5% reported the severity of their pain to be moderate to severe, and 21.2% reported that the pain prevented them from performing activities of daily living. Regarding associated factors, the pain was more prevalent in overweight/obese students (RP = 1.246, 95% CI: 1.137 to 1.366), who reported carrying a heavy school backpack/bag (PR = 1.187, 95% CI: 1.073 to 1.314) and those who had incorrect posture when picking up objects from the floor (PR = 1.138, 95% CI: 1.031 to 1.256). Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of back pain associated with body mass index, reported weight of the student's school backpack/bag, and posture when picking up objects from the floor.
