The road graph is the main layer of a digital navigation map. With the development of geoinformation technologies it is possible to use the road graph to solve various tasks: route construction, analysis of the use of the road network, analysis of road congestion, geomarketing research, updating the database based on the discrepancy between the data in reality and in the application. The purpose of this research is to consider in detail the applied problems that are solved on the basis of the road graph of аn navigation application. These tasks are considered on the example of HERE Technologies, which has many years of experience in the creation and use of navigation applications.

Map matching has been widely applied in car navigation systems as an efficient method to display the location of vehicles on maps. Various map-matching algorithms have been proposed. Inevitably, the correctness of the map matching is closely related to the accuracy of positioning sensors, such as GPS or Dead Reckoning (DR), and the complexity of the road network and map, especially in urban areas where the GPS signal may be constantly blocked by buildings and the road network is complicated. The existing map matching algorithms cannot resolve the positioning problems under all circumstances. They sometimes give the wrong position estimates of the car on road; the result is called mismatching. In order to improve the quality of map matching, a deep understand of the accuracy of sensor errors on mismatching is important. This paper analyses various factors that may affect the quality of map matching based on extensive tests in Hong Kong. Suggestions to improve the success rate of map matching are also provided.

This paper analyzes the automobile accessibility of Prague from the Czech territory over a 100-year period: from the creation of independent Czechoslovakia to the planned completion of an arterial network of motorways and high-speed roadways in 2020. Using publications containing information about the evolution of the road network in Czechia, we digitised historical maps and created geo-databases of the road infrastructure. We then produced accessibility models and performed accessibility analyses for four years – 1920, 1960, 2001 and 2020, using ArcGIS 9.3. These were compared and changes in accessibility were identified using cartographic tools.

Recently, new tools have been created for working with geodata, which are used in various fields of human activity. Software for network analysis and routing solutions is of particular importance. The software product pgRouting is an example, distributed under the GPLv2 license. This program extends the capabilities of PostGIS / PostgreSQL geospatial databases. The article discusses the general principles of constructing routes on the graphs of the road network. It describes how to work with the geospatial database and the pgRouting software for building a route. The purpose of the work is to build a correct rout of a road graph in routing areas with a big number of objects and a poorly developed road network. The problem is solved by software pgRouting and QGIS on the basis of the Dijkstra shortest path algorithm, Johnson and Floyd-Warshall algorithms and allows you to solve the traveling salesman problem, and many others. The task is solved by means of software pgRouting и QGIS. As an experiment the article shows the solution for the task in which it is not enough to use only a road graph for building a correct route. Such situations may occur when routing the areas with a big number of objects and a poorly developed road network. In the process of the experiment described in the article it was found out that software pgRouting together with QGIS allows to rather effectively solve the task on calculation and visualization of the shortest route between two points on the map.

Solar glare on roads is responsible for momentaneous deterioration of a driver’s view, interfering with driving capacity and causing accidents. The situation of a driver being affected by solar glare on a road is a spatial-temporal variable, since it depends not only on the time of the day and the day of the year, which are determinant for the local Sun position (temporal factors), but also on the local slope and azimuth of the road in the driven direction (spatial factors). The present work describes a method for producing road glare maps along a road network, as well as retrieving glare information from urban roads so that solar glare vulnerability can be easily accessed. Input data are a 1m resolution Digital Surface Model from Light Detection and Ranging data and the road network. Spatial parameters are processed in a Geographic Information System environment. The Urban Glare Algorithm detects glare and outputs temporal matrices and glare maps. Shadows cast by buildings and trees are considered as well as the driver’s eyes height. The method is tested in an area of Lisbon (Portugal). This work is a contribution to road safety systems implementation and constitutes a relevant basis for warning drivers of glare through car navigation systems.

The aim of this paper, which is part of the M.Sc Thesis of the first author, is an initial attempt for the assessment of the emergency response through the road network of the Urban Area of Thessaloniki (UAT) after a strong earthquake. The areas of the road network that are to become inaccessible either due to partial collapse of buildings or due to destruction of the road axes by rupture zones, are detected. The inaccessible parts are determined for the cases of three earthquake scenarios using the values of the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), which were calculated for about 6000 points over the UAT, as well as spatial overlay tools of a GIS. In the end, by applying network analysis and according to the situation of the network after the earthquake, the possibility of movement of the fire engines and ambulances was studied and least cost routes from ambulance stations to UAT hospitals were tracked.

The article describes a systematic approach to justifying the creation of civilian products at the enterprise of the military-industrial complex (MIC). The direction of development and possible problems in the creation of products are considered. The topic of maintaining the objects of the road network using specialized equipment is disclosed. The portrait of the consumer and his problems are determined. A general description of the created multi-functional small-sized power-armed machine for the maintenance of the road network is given. Created architecture - stakeholders, challenges and issues using systems engineering. In this paper we show how it can be useful to the probability of intersections in the determination of a classification rule for raster conversions in Geographical Information System (GIS) and GRASS GIS for the Road Network Analysis (RNA). We use a geometric probabilities approach for irregular path considering these results for transportation planning operations. We study two particular problems with irregular tessellations, in order to have a situation more realistic respect to map GIS and considering also the maximum value of probability to narrow the range of possible probability values.

To date, the road network provides up to 95 percent of passenger and freight traffic in the Kyrgyz Republic. The country's road network is currently in crisis, which is a serious obstacle to the path of social and economic development of our republic. In the present article, the role and values of methods for diagnosing and evaluating the state of motor roads for their reproduction are examined. The values of geoinformation technologies were determined when assessing the reproduction of highways. A feature of geoinformation technologies is that in geoinformation technologies all information is presented in the form of electronic maps, allowing the road specialist to create a database on roads. Geoinformation technology should provide a single information space for the use, disposal, ownership and maintenance of a dynamically developing road network.
