<p>The current study was conducted to check the relationship between emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence and academic performance in first year and final year medical students from the same college was assessed for relationship due to engagement in medical profession. The sample was consisted of (N=200), male (n=100), female (n=100) from Faisalabad Medical University, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Sample age range was 18 to 26 years. Sample from both classes was inducted with odd-even randomization oblique roll numbers. Following tests were administered Demographic sheet (for academic performance) Emotional Intelligence Scale (Schutte,Malouff & Bhullar, 2009) and Spiritual Intelligence Self-report Inventory (King, 2008) to find out the spiritual intelligence, and academic performance among both the groups to check relationship because of education level difference impact and supposed relationship between the variables. Data were analyzed through SPSS. The results showed significant difference between the groups on EI, SI and relationship with AP. No gender differences were reported in AP, however, found in EI and SI. Results also showed that first year students have higher levels of EI, SI and influence on AP. Regression analysis showed that EI was positive predictor of AP whereas SI has the insignificant relationship with the academic performance. This research can be helpful for teachers, doctors and for the researchers to enhance the EI and SI in medical students.</p>

Introduction: Universities are an essential setting for creating health promoting environments. Evidence shows that university life can pose various threats to the students' health. Especially first year students are vulnerable to mental health issues. To support well-being and prevent psychological distress from the first day of studying, onboarding programs are needed to promote the students' health and their self- and social competencies. The study demonstrates a tailored multi-component onboarding intervention program named “Healthy Study Start.” An evaluation of the effectiveness is presented focusing on outcomes regarding the students' sense of coherence (S-SoC), social support, sympathy, the work-related collective and the participative safety (a sub-scale of the team climate) among freshmen at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (CUAS, Austria).Methods: For the analyses, a quantitative controlled study design was used and results were measured three times. The intervention group (n = 72) was composed of freshmen selected from the bachelor study programs Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Biomedical Science and Radiologic Technology. Freshmen from the bachelor study program Healthcare and Nursing formed the control group (n = 81). As the requirements for analyses of variance were not fulfilled, the data had to be analyzed using e.g., Mann-Whitney U-tests.Results: Significant changes (all p &lt; 0.016) between the two groups were found between T0/T1, and between T0/T2. Furthermore, changes within the intervention group (all p &lt; 0.016) emerged in nearly all outcomes between T0/T1, while within the control group no changes were identified. However, the intervention group had statistically significantly higher values in the majority of outcomes at T1 and T2 compared to the control group.Conclusion: The onboarding program “Healthy Study Start” shows how an initiative at the beginning of their studies can support students in entering a new phase of their lives. The results indicate a positive effect on the students' self- and social competencies. However, students' health promotion is not only an investment for a health conscious university or an enhanced employability. Especially in health-related fields of study, students are future multipliers and play an essential role in implementing health promotion concepts for clients, patients and employees.

Introduction: The cosmetologists' health complications can be inducted by their work conductors. The presence of numerous biological harmful factors in their future workplace requires from graduates the faculty of cosmetology extensive knowledge about health threats and prevention methods. Purpose: The survey aimed to get to know and compare the knowledge of students of the first and third year of Cosmetology at the Lomza State University of Applied Sciences on the biological hazards present in cosmetologist's work. Materials and methods: 50 female students (24 first-year students and 26 third-year students) took part in the survey. Results: In almost all cases, responses from third- year Cosmetology showed a higher level of knowledge of biological infections which may threaten in the beauty parlor for themselves and their clients. Also, in the area of preventing the spread of these infections, they had a higher knowledge than their younger friends. Conclusions: The level of knowledge of third-year students is significantly higher than the knowledge of first-year students in Lomza State University of Applied Sciences. It is satisfactory that first-year students who already started education in this field, they know biological threats.

A significant number of studies are devoted to the psychological and social adaptation of students to the educational process at university. This research contributes to the solution of the problem of first-year students’ academic performance in the framework of studying a foreign language by working with monologue speaking tasks. The study offers an analysis of the improvement of academic performance in this particular type of language activity. The study took place at Peter the Great Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russia, and involved 274 first-year students enrolled in undergraduate programs. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to collect and analyse data for the study. The research included the qualitative content analysis of monologue speaking tasks. Results of the study make it possible to conclude that the use of monologue speaking tasks paired with peer interaction and peer assessment can improve first-year students’ English-speaking skills.

Research is devoted to the study of the relationship of emotional intelligence of students with the results of the state exam in the adaptation of the school system for 5 years from the date of introduction. The sample consisted of 156 first-year students. Evaluation of the components of emotional intelligence was measured by self-report (EmIn questionnaire). There was a statistically significant correlation between the severity of different indicators of emotional intelligence of students passing the exam and the results of the three school subjects: Russian language, Mathematics, Social studies. It is shown that since the introduction in 2009 of compulsory exam the level of communication between the indicators of emotional intelligence and the results of the examination has changed. Adaptation processes to the introduction of the state exam lead to changes contingent of successful students: If at the time of the introduction of the exam more successful were students with higher EI, in the process of adaptation more successful became those with lower EI. It was shown that the components of EI, having the most important relationships with the results of the exam, are different for the considered subjects; the dynamics of these relationships has been revealed.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la asociación entre la aptitud motriz de estudiantes universitarios de primer ingreso y su desempeño académico en los dos periodos lectivos de inicio de la carrera de Educación Física, Deporte y Recreación. Participaron 83 voluntarios (Hombres = 60, Mujeres = 23) de la Universidad Veracruzana, México. La aptitud motriz se evaluó con ocho pruebas y el rendimiento académico se midió con el promedio ponderado de dos periodos consecutivos. Los análisis de regresión múltiple mostraron que el salto sin carrera (modelo 1), y gimnasia y encestes de baloncesto (modelo 2) predicen el rendimiento académico. En conclusión, la aptitud motriz predice parcialmente el rendimiento académico en estudiantes de primer ingreso.AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the association between the motor skills of first-year university students and their academic performance in the two initial academic terms of the Physical Education, Sports and Recreation degree. Eighty-three volunteers participated (Men = 60, Women = 23) from the Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico. Motor skills were evaluated with eight tests and academic performance was measured with the weighted average of two consecutive terms. Multiple regression analyses showed that standing jumping (model 1), and gymnastics and effective basketball throws (model 2) predicted academic performance. In conclusion, motor skills partially predict academic performance in first-year students

The Study Management and Academic Results Test (SMART) was developed to measure study- and examination-related cognitions, time management, and study strategies. This questionnaire was used in three prospective studies, together with measures for optimism and test anxiety. In the first two studies, done among 253 first-year students enrolled in four different faculties, the highest significant correlations with academic performance were found for the SMART scales. In a replication study among first-year medical students ( n = 156) at a different university, the same pattern of results was observed. A stepwise multiple regression analysis, with academic performance as a dependent variable, showed significant correlations only for the SMART Test Competence and Time Management (Multiple R = .61). Results give specific indications about the profile of successful students.

First year students take time to adjust to college life. A number of priorities are considered in order to survive in the tertiary level. One of which is complying with the academic requirements. The study described the study skills of the first year students in the College of Education, La Salle University, Ozamiz City, Philippines. The framework used in identifying the study skills of the first year students was adopted from Lucas and Corpuz (2007:4).These study skills were correlated to the students’ academic performance using Kendall’s Tau B, Chi-square, and Multiple Regression tests. There were 128 first year students who were taken as respondents of the study. The study reveals that the first year students have the skills in organizing and planning their work, preparing assignments or projects, and note-taking and reading. The students’ skills in organizing and planning one’s work; working with others and utilizing resources and feedback; note-taking and reading; and preparing an assignment/project correlate with their grades. The best predictor of students’ academic performance is note-taking and reading. First year college students need to develop the habit of studying their lessons, reading, and taking down notes to improve their academic performance.Keywords: Education, study skills, academic performance, descriptive design, Philippines

El propósito del estudio fue determinar la tasa de incidencia de lesiones y el de riesgo de lesión en el estudiantado de primer año de la Carrera Ciencias del Movimiento Humano de la Universidad de Costa Rica durante el año lectivo 2014. Es un estudio prospectivo en el que participaron 47 estudiantes, quienes voluntariamente completaron el consentimiento informado y un cuestionario de autoreporte para conocer la presencia de lesiones y hábitos de actividad física. A los participantes se les indicó que cada lunes del semestre debían reportar la presencia de alguna lesión ocurrida durante la semana anterior y que debían sacar una cita médica para un diagnóstico preciso. Se encontró que el 31.8% de los estudiantes (80% mujeres y 20% hombres) ingresaron lesionados a la carrera (p < 0.001). Durante el año de seguimiento, 59.5% de la población estudiantil presentó una lesión nueva. Hubo 37 lesiones nuevas, 24 (64.9%) en mujeres y 13 (35.1%) en hombres, siendo las de rodilla y muslo las más frecuentes. Estas lesiones ocurren principalmente en el contexto extracurricular. El riesgo de lesión para la población fue de 0.79 y la tasa de incidencia 2.00 lesiones/1000 h de exposición. Se concluye que la población estudiantil masculina y femenina de primer año de la carrera de Ciencias del Movimiento Humano de la Universidad de Costa Rica es vulnerable a la presencia de lesiones en el tren inferior, mostrando una mayor cantidad de lesiones en el segundo semestre del año. Se necesitan estudios longitudinales para conocer la evolución y atención de las lesiones a lo largo de la carrera.Abstract. The purpose of the study was to determine the incidence rate of injuries and the risk of injury on first-year students of the Human Movement Sciences Program from the University of Costa Rica during the school year 2014. In this prospective study, 47 students voluntarily completed an informed consent and a self-report questionnaire to determine injuries and physical activity habits. Participants were instructed that every Monday of the semester should report any injury that occurred during the previous week, and to make a doctor’s appointment for an accurate diagnostic. Results indicated that 31.8% of the first-year students (80% women, 30% men) entered the program already injured (p < 0.001). During the follow-up year, 59.5% of the student population reported a new injury. There were 37 new lesions, 24 (64.9%) in women and 13 (35.1%) in men, being the knee and thigh the most frequent injuries. These lesions occurred mainly in the extracurricular context. The injury risk for the population was 0.79 and the incidence rate of 2.00 injuries/1000-h of exposure. In conclusion, the first-year male and female student population of the Human Movement Sciences Program at the University Costa Rica is vulnerable to injuries in the lower body, with a greater number of injuries in the second semester of the year. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine the evolution and care of injuries throughout the program.
