The os cordis (heart bone) is a rare bone found only in a few animals in the world. We discovered an os cordis in some chimpanzees. The os cordis was found in males and females, and in young and old animals. It was not present in chimps with healthy hearts, only in those with severe heart disease. We also discovered that a tissue called cartilage was present around the bone. The presence of cartilage gives us clues about how and why these rare bones develop.

Abstract In Ethiopia, the gender gap in financial inclusion is high, and the effect of socioeconomic variables on the gap is not well investigated. As a result, this study uses the World Bank’s Global Findex database from 2017 to analyze magnitude and determinants of the gender gap in financial inclusion in Ethiopia. Using Fairlie decomposition technique, we find statistically significant gender gap in all indicators of financial inclusion under study in Ethiopia. The result shows that the highest financial inclusion gender gap is observed in formal saving followed by formal account holding. The decomposition results show males are 16.5%, 16.6%, 8.9 %, 8.4 %t, and 5.8% more likely to have a formal account, formal saving, borrowing, emergency fund possibility, and debit card ownership, respectively. We further decompose these gaps using Daymont and Andrisani approach and the result reveals that differences in coefficients between males and females explain 57.7% in formal saving, 43.4% in formal account holding, and 110.9% in borrowing from formal financial institutions. About 54.2% of the total gender gap in possibility of raising emergcency fund is attributed to differences in characteristics/predictors between the two genders while gender gap in debit card holding is explained by the iteraction between differences in characterisctics and coefficients. Being older, more educated, and wealthier favor financial inclusion, with age, employment, and education having a greater effect. Furthermore, gaps in coefficients, productivity, and advantage to males and disadvantage to females aggravate the gender gap in financial inclusion in Ethiopia. Gender mainstreaming in economic activities to increase income, employment opportunities and education for females to bridge the gender gap in financial inclusion is important.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is recognized as a leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in developed countries. Although global in distribution, Japan records the highest incidence of KD in the world. Epidemiological reports from the two most populous countries in the world, namely China and India, indicate that KD is now being increasingly recognized. Whether this increased reporting is due to increased ascertainment, or is due to a true increase in incidence, remains a matter of conjecture. The diagnosis and management of KD in developing countries is a challenging proposition. In this review we highlight some of the difficulties faced by physicians in managing children with KD in resource-constrained settings.

A global pandemic instigated by SARS-CoV-2 virus has been going strongly for almost two years. There have been almost 240 million cases with almost 5 million fatalities all over the world so far. COVID has affected almost every aspect of people’s lives halting the world in immeasurable ways. Although COVID-19 is mostly affecting the respiratory system, it is also responsible for a significant amount of cardiovascular system involvement. On one hand, it deteriorates any pre-existing cardiovascular condition, on another hand, it triggers other inflammation-facilitated acute events. They comprise of inflammatory heart disease, severe pericardial effusion, ventricular arrhythmias, endothelial dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and many more. In this article, we summarize the features, management, and treatment of several important COVID-19 induced cardiovascular complications. Recent advances in the treatment of these diseases along with the justification and concerns of specific therapeutic measures are also discussed.


In today’s modern world, the world population is affected with some kind of heart diseases. With the vast knowledge and advancement in applications, the analysis and the identification of the heart disease still remain as a challenging issue. Due to the lack of awareness in the availability of patient symptoms, the prediction of heart disease is a questionable task. The World Health Organization has released that 33% of population were died due to the attack of heart diseases. With this background, we have used Heart Disease Prediction dataset extracted from UCI Machine Learning Repository for analyzing and the prediction of heart disease by integrating the ensembling methods. The prediction of heart disease classes are achieved in four ways. Firstly, The important features are extracted for the various ensembling methods like Extra Trees Regressor, Ada boost regressor, Gradient booster regress, Random forest regressor and Ada boost classifier. Secondly, the highly importance features of each of the ensembling methods is filtered from the dataset and it is fitted to logistic regression classifier to analyze the performance. Thirdly, the same extracted important features of each of the ensembling methods are subjected to feature scaling and then fitted with logistic regression to analyze the performance. Fourth, the Performance analysis is done with the performance metric such as Mean Squared error (MSE), Mean Absolute error (MAE), R2 Score, Explained Variance Score (EVS) and Mean Squared Log Error (MSLE). The implementation is done using python language under Spyder platform with Anaconda Navigator. Experimental results shows that before applying feature scaling, the feature importance extracted from the Ada boost classifier is found to be effective with the MSE of 0.04, MAE of 0.07, R2 Score of 92%, EVS of 0.86 and MSLE of 0.16 as compared to other ensembling methods. Experimental results shows that after applying feature scaling, the feature importance extracted from the Ada boost classifier is found to be effective with the MSE of 0.09, MAE of 0.13, R2 Score of 91%, EVS of 0.93 and MSLE of 0.18 as compared to other ensembling methods.

The world is undergoing the new pandemic named COVID-19 of early 2020 announced in China and all over the world and infect more than 10 million people in the world (incidence rate 1.3). Indonesia has the number of cases 28.818 per June 04, 2020, with a CFR of 6%, the highest in Southeast Asia. Besides confirming the case, the suspect like ODP, PDP, and OTG should also be monitored. Although the number of cases and suspects in the Kebayoran Baru district is not the highest in South Jakarta, as the center of South Jakarta where many offices and high mobility, and the population is not as much as another district, so the possible transmission of COVID-19 in Kebayoran Baru still high. To find out the relationship between age, sex, comorbid hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and heart disease with the severity of symptoms in COVID-19 suspect of Kebayoran Baru district March – June 2020. The design of this study used cross-sectional secondary data of COVID-19 suspect monitoring in Community Health Center Kebayoran Baru. Analysis with chi-square 0.005. Statistical results of COVID-19 suspects in the Kebayoran Baru district are 44% having symptoms. The research suggests that a significant relationship between age, hypertension comorbid, diabetes mellitus comorbid, and heart disease with the symptoms. While sex has no significant relation with symptoms. The government should have more attention to protect people that having comorbid such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or heart disease.

We have developed normal standards for the Bruce exercise (EX) protocol since a review of 875 studies in patients with congenital or acquired heart disease showed that only 5.1% achieved the predicted 50th percentile for EX time of the standards reported by Cumming, Everatt, and Hastman (Am. J Cardiol 41:69, 1978). Our data are based on 160 males and 103 females, age 4–18 years who met the following criteria: trivial or no heart disease, maximal effort, maximal EX heart rate (HR) > 180 beats/min, and normal resting and EX ECG without arrhythmia. The ECG was monitored continuously and HR computed from the ECG and the end of each minute of EX. Comparison with the predicted data of Cumming et al. for each age group by stage showed essentially identical submaximal EX heart rates but slightly lower maximal HR (–2%), which averaged 197 beats per minute in males and females. EX times were on average 15% lower than the predicted 50th percentile for most age groups in males and females. We developed regression equations, which predict exercise time from age and body size or age, body size and 2nd stage exercise heart rate. They better reflect the capabilities of untrained, asymptomatic children and adolescents seen in our laboratory in the 1990s than the Canadian data of 1978.

An asymptomatic case of idiopathic pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis in a child is described, with an 8-year follow-up. A review of the world literature indicates that this is an uncommon, often familial, disease, occurring in males and females equally. It is characterized by extensive alveolar calculi and can easily be suspected from the appearance of a roentgenogram of the lungs. When the disease is discovered the symptoms are usually absent to minimal, in contrast to the apparently severe involvement of the lung. Probably the majority of the patients develop the disease during childhood. The usual course is slow progression, terminating in cardiopulmonary failure during middle age. The etiology remains obscure, and there is no known treatment.
