Tomato is an important vegetable in Ghanaian diet and contributes enormously in livelihood improvement. Tomato production is threatened by a high prevalence of biotic and abiotic stresses as well as increased postharvest losses and poor agronomic practices, thereby resulting in massive importation of tomato and its products to meet the local demands. The recent introduction of greenhouse vegetable cultivation technology in Ghana is a sustainable attempt in addressing and ensuring year-round production of vegetables including tomato. However, research on agronomic practices targeted to improving yield and fruit quality under greenhouse conditions in Ghana is scarcely available. Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate the effect of plant spacing and topping on tomato yield and fruit quality under greenhouse conditions. A 3 ×3 factorial treatment arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications was used. Two factors, plant spacing and topping with each having three levels, were used. Thus, the levels for plant spacing were 0.15 m × 1.3 m, 0.2 m × 1.3 m, and 0.3 m × 1.3 m while topping treatments at trusses 2, 3, and 4 (control) were done. The results showed that yield was significantly influenced by plant spacing in both experiments. The interaction effect of 0.2 m × 1.3 m plant spacing and topping at truss 2 showed significantly higher yields. Furthermore, juice volume was significantly increased by plant spacing. Again, 0.2 m × 1.3 m plant spacing by truss 2 topping interaction produced the highest juice volume. Therefore, these agronomic practices could be an essential and effective approach in achieving higher tomato production with improved fruit quality under greenhouse cultivation to ensure sustainable food security.

The aim of this research was to evaluate postharvest cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum (L.) Mill.) yield and fruit quality as affected by grafting and irrigation water quality in the desert region of Israel. Tomato plants (scion cv. Lorka) were grafted onto 3 commercial tomato rootstocks (Resistar, Beaufort and TRS2) and were irrigated with 2 water qualities: fresh water (electrical conductivity (EC)-1.6 dS m−1) and salty water (EC-4.0 dS m−1). Fresh water significantly increased fruit yield by an average of 17% and fruit size, regardless of plant grafting and rootstock, but there were no significant differences in fruit size between the water treatments. However, salty water, but not grafting, significantly improved several quality parameters of fruit stored for 12 d at 12 °C followed by 2 d at 20 °C in simulated sea transport of produce from Israel to Europe and marketing. Fruit harvested from plants irrigated with salty water showed higher sweetness, sourness and, especially, better general taste, and significantly reduced off-flavor, compared with those irrigated with fresh water. The combination of ‘Lorka’ on ‘Resistar’ rootstock and resulted in the best external, internal, and sensory quality parameters at the end of storability and marketing simulation, while the lowest-quality parameters were in fruit harvested from ‘Lorka’ on ‘Beaufort’ rootstock.

 Alternate partial root-zone drying (PRD) irrigation and deficit irrigation (DI) are water-saving irrigation strategies. Here, comparative effects of PRD and DI on fruit quality of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were investigated. The results showed that the irrigation treatments had no effect on tomato yield but significantly affected several organic and mineral quality attributes of the fruits. Compared to DI, PRD significantly increased the fruit concentrations of Ca and Mg, and fruit juice concentrations of total soluble solid, glucose, fructose, citric and malic acid, P, K and Mg. It is concluded that PRD is better than DI in terms of improving fruit quality, and could be a promising management strategy for simultaneous increase of water use efficiency and fruit quality in tomatoes.

ABSTRAK<br />Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Kebun Percobaan Balai Penelitian<br />Tanaman Tembakau dan Serat, Karangploso, Malang, mulai bulan Mei<br />sampai dengan Oktober 2001. Penelitian bertujuan untuk memperoleh<br />varietas wijen yang sesuai pada sistem tumpangsari dengan tanaman jarak<br />kepyar. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan adalah rancangan petak<br />berlajur dengan tiga ulangan. Perlakuan tumpangsari terdiri dari dua<br />faktor. Faktor pertama yaitu varietas tanaman jarak kepyar Asembagus<br />81 (Asb 81) dan Asembagus 104 (Asb 104). Faktor kedua yaitu<br />varietas wijen Sumberrejo 1 (Sbr 1) dan Sumberrejo 2 (Sbr 2). Pada<br />setiap ulangan juga ditanam varietas monokulturnya. Ukuran petak 6 m<br />x 6 m, jarak tanam untuk tanaman jarak kepyar 2 m x 2 m (satu<br />tanaman per lubang) dan varietas wijen 0,5 m x 0,25 m (satu tanaman<br />per lubang). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tanaman wijen varietas<br />Sumberrejo 1 dengan tanaman jarak kepyar varietas Asembagus 104<br />memberikan hasil 632,55 gram biji wijen per petak dan 637,63 biji jarak<br />per petak. Parameter total hasil relatif (RYT) sistem tumpangsari wijen<br />dengan tanaman jarak kepyar lebih besar dari satu ( &gt; 1) yaitu antara 1,687<br />sampai dengan 1,787, sehingga sistem tumpangsari tersebut efisien dalam<br />memanfaatkan lahan.<br />Kata kunci : Wijen, Sesamum indicum L., jarak kepyar, Ricinus communis<br />L., tumpangsari, pertumbuhan, hasil, Jawa Timur<br />ABSTRACT<br />Response of sesamum variety as intercrops with castor on<br />their growth and yield<br />The experiment was conducted in the Experimental Garden of the<br />Indonesian Tobacco and Fibre Crops Research Institute in Malang, from<br />May to October 2001. The objective of the study was to find out the<br />variety of sesame which is suitable for intercropping with castor. A strip<br />plot design was used with three replications. The factorial treatment<br />consisted of two factors. The first factor was castor varieties (Asembagus<br />81 and Asembagus 104). The second factor was sesame varieties<br />(Sumberrejo 1 and Sumberrejo 2). In each replication, castor and sesame<br />varieties were planted as monocultures. The plot size was 6 m x 6 m,<br />castor and sesame plant spacing were 2 m x 2 m and 0,50 m x 0,25 m<br />respectively. The results showed that the intercropping of sesame<br />Sumbererjo 1 variety and castor Asembagus 104 variety produced 632,55<br />gram sesame seed per plot and 637,63 gram seed castor per plot. The<br />highest relative total yield on intercropping castor and sesame was<br />obtained by Asembagus 104 and Sumberrejo 1 at 1,787 and the lowest<br />relative total yield was obtained by Asembagus 104 and Sumberrejo 2 at<br />1,687. Background: Seaweed-derived extracts have gained popularity in agriculture as bioproducts with phytostimulatory effects on plant growth and development. Methods: This study assessed the effect of polysaccharide-enriched extracts (PEEs) derived from six Moroccan seaweeds on tomato growth, yield, and fruit quality. PPEs were applied to tomato plants as soil drench in a greenhouse experiment. Growth parameters including plant height (cm) and number of leaves, flowers, and flower buds were recorded every 15 days. Yield and quality parameters of the harvested fruits were also recorded after each harvest. Results: The obtained results showed that all PEEs improved the growth, yield, and fruit quality of treated tomato plants. According to principal component analysis, the presence of SO4, galactose, glucose, and maltose in the characterized polysaccharides was closely associated with their effect on plant growth, yield, and fruit quality parameters. Conclusions: PEEs obtained from Gelidium crinale,Schizymenia dubyi, Fucus spiralis, and Bifurcaria bifurcata exhibited the highest biostimulant effects and could be used as bioproducts for improved tomato yield and fruit nutritional quality.

In this study, we developed an automatic irrigation method using an image-based irrigation system for high-quality tomato production in a greenhouse by investigating effects of a diurnal periodic cycle of irrigation on the photosynthesis, growth, yield, and fruit quality of tomatoes. The diurnal periodic cycle in a moderate wilting–full recovery treatment (MR) with a medium threshold value was more frequent than that in a severe wilting–full recovery treatment (SR) with a high threshold value. Mean daily maximum wilting ratios for MR and SR were 7.2% and 11.3%, respectively, when wilting ratios were set to threshold values of 7% and 14%, respectively. Total irrigation amounts in MR and SR were similar and lower than that in the untreated control. Net photosynthetic rate decreased under water stress, with values in MR being higher than that in SR, and recovered rapidly to more than 90% of its maximum value following irrigation. Plant growth and fruit yield per plant in MR and SR were lower than that in the control. Water stress treatment could improve fruit quality when it commenced at the anthesis stage or early fruit development stage. Total irrigation amount was a more important parameter than the threshold value for controlling the growth, yield, and fruit quality of tomatoes.

Twisted disease is one of the main diseases on shallot caused by <em>Fusarium </em>sp<em>.</em> One method to increase the resistance of shallot cultivars to the twisted disease can be performed by using True Seed Shallot (TSS) combining with a salicylic acid application. TSS is known as free pathogen. The objective of the research was to examine the effects of a salicylic acid application to the growth, yield and resistance responses of TSS on Tuktuk, Sanren and Lokananta cultivars to the twisted disease. The research was arranged in factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of two factors with three replications. The first factor included Tuktuk, Sanren and Lokananta cultivars and the second factor comprised salicylic acid applications (without salicylic acid and inoculation, without salicylic acid with inoculation, immersion treatment of salicylic acid with inoculation, spray treatment with inoculation as well as immersion and spray treatment with inoculation). The results showed that the application of salicylic acid in different treatments had the same effects on the growth, yield and resistance of TSS. An interesting result is found, in which the application of salicylic acid by immersing and spraying could reduce the incidence of twisted disease by 12.5% in TSS. Therefore, the application of salicylic acid by immersing and spraying can be one of the recommended twisted disease management.

A field trial was conducted during 2015 and 2016, to study the effect ofgrowth regulators on growth, flowering, yield and fruit quality of strawberry cv. Chandler. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with 16 treatments viz.CPPU at 1, 2 and 4 ppm, GA3 at 25, 50 and 75 ppm, Promalin at 2, 4 and 6 ppm, GA4+7 at 5, 10 and15 ppm, NAA at 10, 20 and 30 ppm and control (water spray) and each treatment was replicated thrice. The results revealed that the plants sprayed with 15 ppm GA4+7 two weeks before flowering significantly reported highest plant height (33.43 cm), leaf area (239.70 cm2), number of flowers (31.94), fruit set (87.45 %), number of fruits per plant (29.02), yield (540.01 g/plant), fruit length (53.63 mm) and fruit diameter (37.19 mm) and fruit weight (23.70 g) as compared to control. This treatment resulted in 196.36 % increase in yield and 56.22 %in fruit weight over control. Plants sprayed with 6 ppm promalin also showed significant improvement in vegetative growth, fruit size, yield and fruit quality, which resulted in 137.92 % increase in yield and 51.81 % increase in fruit weight over control. Hence, it is concluded that foliar spray of 15 ppm GA4+7 applied 2 weeks before flowering is beneficial in improving growth, yield and fruit quality of strawberry plants.

Tomato production in Pakistan faces significant problems of low yields due to various biotic and abiotic stresses primarily because of a narrow genetic base of the cultivars being used. Therefore, Introduction and evaluation of the exotic tomato germplasm has become necessary to acquire elite material to develop future breeding programs. To this end, the present study was conducted for the phenotypic characterization of twenty exotic tomato genotypes along with two locally grown cultivars in semi-arid subtropical climate. Data were collected for morphological, fruit quality and fruit yield traits. A significant (p<0.05) phenotypic variation was observed for all the studied traits. Maximum yield was obtained from “Rober” i.e., 1508.31 g per plant. The maximum shelf life was observed in the Cromco, with the least weight loss (2.45%) and loss in the firmness of fruit (22.61%) in 4 days. Correlation analyses revealed a strong genetic association among morphological and yield related traits. High estimates of the heritability (ranged from 79.77% to 95.01% for different traits), along with a high genetic advance (up to 34%) showed the potential usefulness of these traits and genotypes to develop breeding programs to improve the tomato yield and fruit quality.
