Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), an essential component for energy production that exhibits antioxidant activity, is considered a health-supporting and antiaging supplement. However, intervention-controlled studies have provided variable results on CoQ10 supplementation benefits, which may be attributed to individual CoQ10 bioavailability differences. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between genetic polymorphisms and CoQ10 serum levels after long-term supplementation. CoQ10 levels at baseline and after one year of supplementation (150 mg) were determined, and eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cholesterol metabolism and CoQ10 absorption, efflux, and cellular uptake related genes were assessed. Rs2032582 (ABCB1) and rs1761667 (CD36) were significantly associated with a higher increase in CoQ10 levels in women. In addition, in women, rs3808607 (CYP7A1) and rs2072183 (NPC1L1) were significantly associated with a higher increase in CoQ10 per total cholesterol levels. Subgroup analyses showed that these four SNPs were useful for classifying high- or low-responder to CoQ10 bioavailability after long-term supplementation among women, but not in men. On the other hand, in men, no SNP was found to be significantly associated with increased serum CoQ10. These results collectively provide novel evidence on the relationship between genetics and CoQ10 bioavailability after long-term supplementation, which may help understand and assess CoQ10 supplementation effects, at least in women.

Marek J, Hána V. Kršek M. Justová V, Catus F, Thomas F. Long-term treatment of acromegaly with the slow-release somatostatin analogue lanreotide. Eur J Endocrinol 1994;131:20–6. ISSN 0804–4643 Thirteen patients with active acromegaly despite previous surgery were treated with 30 mg lanreotide im twice a month for 9 months. In 10 subjects the treatment continued to 19 months. GH serum levels of all patients decreased significantly from an initial value of 32.0 (29.4) μg/l [median (standard error of median)] to 10.0 (3.6) and 19.1 (5.7) after 3 and 9 months of treatment, respectively. In the 10 patients with the treatment longer than one year the decrease in GH was from 46.8 (29.4) μg/l to 12.5 (5.0) and 16.1 (5.3) after 13 and 19 months, respectively. IGF-I serum levels decreased significantly from 1193 (73)μg/l to 782 (99) and 621 (103) after 3 and 9 months, respectively, and were normalized in 3 patients. In the 10 patients treated for longer than one year, levels decreased significantly from 1318 (74)μg/l to 653 (170) and 742 (180) after 13 and 19 months, respectively. IGF BP-3 levels were reduced to the normal range in 6 patients and decreased from 8.7 (1.5)mg/l to 6.4 (0.8) and to 5.4 (1.0) after 3 and 9 months, respectively. In the patients with the 19 months treatment the decrease was from 9.3 (1.6) mg/l to 3.9 (0.9) and 4.8 (0.9) after 13 and 19 months, respectively. The IGF BP-3 to IFG I ratio increased in 7 patients. This elevation significantly correlated with the decrease in bioassayable somatomedin. Prolactin serum levels fell in all patients with increased prolactin secretion. Testosterone plasma levels increased in 4 out of 5 men without replacement therapy. Clinical improvement was observed in all patients. A reduction of tumour mass was observed in five patients and complete disappearance of the tumour in one subject. All patients complained of mild abdominal pain and softened stools for several days following the injections. However, these side effects never required interruption of treatment. Asymptomatic microlithiasis was seen in only one patient after 13 months, which led to treatment being suspended for a period of 3 months after which it was resumed. Fasting serum insulin and insulin area under the curve (AUC) after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) fell in all patients. Fasting blood glucose, fructosamine and glucose AUC after OGTT slightly increased during the treatment, but all blood glucose levels (fasting and during OGTT) remained within normal ranges. Lanreotide appears to be a safe and effective treatment in patients with active acromegaly unresolved by surgery. The long-acting formulation avoids the drawbacks associated with either repeated daily injections or continuous infusions of somatostatin analogues. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a hepatokine with beneficial effects on metabolism. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between the serum FGF21, and energy and glucose metabolism in 40 patients with pheochromocytoma/functional paraganglioma (PPGL), in comparison with 21 obese patients and 26 lean healthy controls. 27 patients with PPGL were examined one year after tumor removal. Basic anthropometric and biochemical measurements were done. Energy metabolism was measured by indirect calorimetry (Vmax-Encore 29N). FGF21 was measured by ELISA. FGF21 was higher in PPGL than in controls (174.2 (283) pg/mL vs. 107.9 (116) pg/mL; p < 0.001) and comparable with obese (174.2 (283) pg/mL vs. 160.4 (180); p = NS). After tumor removal, FGF21 decreased (176.4 (284) pg/mL vs. 131.3 (225) pg/mL; p < 0.001). Higher levels of FGF21 were expressed, particularly in patients with diabetes. FGF21 positively correlated in PPGL with age (p = 0.005), BMI (p = 0.028), glycemia (p = 0.002), and glycated hemoglobin (p = 0.014). In conclusion, long-term catecholamine overproduction in PPGL leads to the elevation in serum FGF21, especially in patients with secondary diabetes. FGF21 levels were comparable between obese and PPGL patients, despite different anthropometric indices. We did not find a relationship between FGF21 and hypermetabolism in PPGL. Tumor removal led to the normalization of FGF21 and the other metabolic abnormalities.

ABSTRACTWe are characterizing the corrosion behavior of the radioactive glass that was made with sludge from Tank 51 at the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) and a nonradioactive glass having the same composition, except for the absence of radionuclides. Static dissolution tests are being conducted in a tuff groundwater solution at glass surface area/solution volume ratios (S/V) of 2000 and 20,000 m−1. These tests are being conducted to assess the relationship between the behavior of this glass in a 7-day Product Consistency Test and in long-term tests, to assess the effects of radionuclides on the glass corrosion behavior, and to measure the disposition of radionuclides that are released as the radioactive glass corrodes. The radioactive glass reacts slower than the nonradioactive glass through the longest test durations completed to date, which are 140 days for tests at 2000 m−1 and about 400 days for tests at 20,000 m−1. This is probably because radiolysis results in lower solution pH values being maintained in tests with the radioactive glass. Rate-affecting alteration phases that had formed within one year in tests with other glasses having compositions similar to the Tank 51 glass have not yet formed in tests with either glass.

Background: Adiponectin, a well-known adipokine plays a number of regulatory actions in human body metabolism. Decreased levels of adiponectin have been reported in type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome and hypertension. Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is a fat-soluble antioxidant substance which has been reported to be effective in several metabolic disturbances such as insulin resistance and inflammation. Objective: Present systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to assess the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on adiponectin serum level. Methods: A comprehensive search was performed in electronic databases including EMBASE, Google scholar, and PubMed up to January 2018. A meta-analysis of eligible studies was performed using random effects model to estimate pooled effect size of CoQ10 supplementation on adiponectin. Results: A total of 209 subjects were recruited from 5 eligible studies. Meta-analysis did not suggest any significant effect of CoQ10 supplementation on adiponectin serum level (0.240 mg/dl, 95%CI: -0.216, 0.696, P= 0.303), without significant heterogeneity between included studies (I2= 40.9%, p= 0.149). Conclusion: Although present meta-analysis did not indicate any significant effects of CoQ10 supplementation on serum adiponectin levels but future long-term dose-response trials are needed before any firm conclusion.

This paper deals with long term loyalty programmes of selective grocery retailers who operate in the market within the Czech Republic. Only those loyalty programmes designed for the end customers are taken into account, so this study is concerned with the B2C area. A long term loyalty programmes last at least for one year, i.e. twelve months (this time determination is valid for purposes of this paper). The main aim of this paper is to identify the single elements and principles occurring in long term loyalty programmes and then to develop an illustrative model. The presented output is a model of long term loyalty programmes that captures the three following phases: the establishment, development (or building) and termination of the relationship. In addition, from the empirical research, an interesting fact has emerged: two of the analysed long term loyalty programmes were launched at a similar time. This could be explained through the tendency for companies to copy the successful activities insigated by their competitors. Furthermore, the next remarkable phenomenon is that one grocery chain runs two long term loyalty programmes at the same time and the target groups of these programmes overlap. A possible explanation could be that the chain is making efforts to interest as many as possible of its different customers.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy is a very common, potentially preventable, long term, microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and leading cause of visual disability and blindness. It is considered hallmark of generalized microangiopathy occurring in diabetic patient. The present study was designed to study the lipid levels in patients of diabetes mellitus and further analyse the data with reference to occurrence of diabetic retinopathy. Methods: It was a case control study of 30 cases consisting patients with diabetic retinopathy and 30 controls with diabetes and no diabetic retinopathy. Fasting lipid profile, FBS, PPBS, HbA1C and BMI were measured in all subjects. Results: 34 males (57%) and 26 (43%) females were recruited in the study. The mean duration of diabetes was 8.5±5 yrs. The average HbA1C was 8.2±1.3 in Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) group and 7.5±0.9 in patients with no Diabetic Retinopathy (NDR). 21 (70%) patients in DR group had dyslipidaemia, whereas 13 (43.3%) patients in NDR had dyslipidaemia, average cholesterol was 188.30±46.48 mg/dl in patients with DR, 182.50±34.74 mg/dl in patients without DR.Conclusions: Dyslipidaemia was found to be more common in patients having Diabetic Retinopathy than in those without DR and the association was statistically significant. Mean cholesterol levels were found to be higher in cases and mean HDL level was found to be higher in controls but the relationship was not found to be statistically significant. No association was found between other lipid fractions and retinopathy.

The objective of this paper was to investigate, with respect to the case of Mexico, the relationship between international tourism and the magnitude of poverty during the period of 1980–2017, through the use of an autoregressive distributed lags (ARDL) cointegration model with a structural break. The econometric results obtained in this paper indicate that there is a long-term relationship between international tourism and the reduction of poverty. It was found that for every 1% increase in international tourism, household consumption per capita increases 0.46% (and, therefore, poverty decreases). In the short term, it was found that a 1% increase in international tourism leads to a 0.11 % increase in household consumption per capita (a decrease in poverty). The coefficient of the error correction model indicates that 23.9% of any movement into disequilibrium is corrected within one year. To corroborate these results, a Toda–Yamamoto Granger causality test was carried out, indicating a unidirectional causality relationship from international tourism towards the reduction of poverty.

Forty-two with hepatosplenic patients treated with praziquantel and followed up for 5 years. One half of the patients received a single 30 mg/kg dose and the other half, two doses of 25 mg/kg given 4 hrs apart. According to Hoffman and Kato-Katz stool exams, an 83.3% cure rate, was observed after twelve months. Stool egg counts in cases of incomplete cure were greatly reduced. Liver function, as assessed by serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma glutamyltransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities as well as albumin and gamma globulin showed marked improvement after one year. Hepatomegaly was reduced in 81.0% of patients and splenomegaly in 78.8%. Spleen regression was complete in 15.1% of the total, and in 18.5% of those with compensated hepatosplenic disease. As a result of these observations, the authors recomend early treatment with anti-schistosomal medication, either oxamniquine or praziquantel, to halt progression of disease and reduce splenomegaly.

The aim of this paper is to describe the relationships between changes in employee indices (motivation and satisfaction) and customer indices (satisfaction and loyalty) in a single- and multi-term perspective. The article presents the results of primary research conducted in two industries (banking services and shopping centers) during three annual reference periods. The authors used the PLS-SEM method in the analytical process. The results of the research suggest that there is a strong relationship between changes in the areas of employee and customer satisfaction in the studied sectors, with a one-year time shift, which the authors called the “time gap”. In addition, it turned out that the strength of influence of the employee’s motivation level on customers is clearly lower than the strength of influence of the employee satisfaction. The occurrence of a “time gap” between employee and customer processes suggests that any changes introduced in the area of customer service as well as broadly understood human resource management policy need some time to become sustainable—to be noticed by the market and coded in the minds of the recipients of the offer as the new and currently applicable standard. The article makes a successful attempt at a long-term analysis of the relationship between employees and customers, assuming a time delay between both phenomena. As a result of the conducted research, it was possible to operationalize the discussed relationship in terms of strength and direction as well as the time shift.
