ABSTRACTThe effects of the inclusion of increasing quantities of cereal straw treated with sodium hydroxide in the diet of rabbits weie studied on 68 animals, both males and females, of the Spanish Giant and New Zealand × Spanish Giant breeds, weaned at different weights. The nitrogen and fibre digestibilities, the overall growth rate (from weaning to 2·25 kg) and the partial growth rate (from weaning to 2 weeks after weaning) increased linearly, while the feed conversion rate decreased when the content of treated straw in the feed was raised. The overall growth rate for males was significantly higher (P < 0·001) and feed conversion rate lower (P < 0·01) than for females. The crossbred animals had a significantly higher overall (P < 0·001) and partial (P < 0·05) growth rate. As weaning weight increased, overall (P < 0·001) and partial (P < 0·05) growth rate also increased, whereas the dressing percentage of the carcass decreased significantly (P < 0·01).

Under prevailing production restrictions the profitability of agricultural production increasingly depends not only on prices of products and inputs, but on how effectively and economically the existing capacity and animal breeds are utilized on farms. The technical efficiency of pork production in Finland is generally high. The average feed conversion rate on farms is only about 16 % lower and daily liveweight gain 20 % less than results from experimental stations. Variation between farms is, however, considerable. The means of technical results between the best and poorest farms differ by 20—30 %. Results also tend to deteriorate and relative deviations increase, especially in large piggeries. The average gross margin percentage was 12 %. Variation in the gross margin per pig was wider between farms than between years. The feed conversion efficiency proved to be the most significant factor contributing to profitability in pork production. Variation in the feed conversion rate accounted for 30 % of total variation in the gross margin. Cost variation was one third larger than the variation of total receipts per pig. The cost of feed varied twice as much as piglet cost. Since the genetic quality of animals in a given region is rather even, variations in productivity depend upon internal factors of piggeries. The large variation in efficiency and profitability over farms emphasizes the human factor i.e. the role of the farmer as the most important factor contributing to successful production.

<p>Fish requires essential fatty acid for growth. Freshwater fish needs linoleat fatty acid (n-6) or combination of linoleat and a-linolenat acids (n-3).  Fish oil contains higher level of n-3, corn oil is rich of n-6, while coconut oil is rich of saturated fatty acids.  This study was conducted to determine the effect of fatty acid sources in diet on growth performance of botia <em>Botia macracanthus</em>. Sources of fatty acid examined were coconut oil (control), corn oil, fish oil, and corn oil + fish oil + coconut oil. The results of study show that daily growth rate of fish fed on diet containing mix of corn-coconut-fish oils (8.39%) and only corn oil (8.15%) was higher (p<0.05) compared to that of fish fed on diet containing fish oil (7.67%) and coconut oil (6.62%).  Feed conversion rate of fish fed on diet containing mix of corn-coconut-fish oils (2.12%) and only corn oil (2.34%) was lower (p<0.05) than that of fish fed on diet containing fish oil (2.97%) and coconut oil (3.74%).  Growth rate and feed conversion rate of fish fed on diet containing mix of corn-coconut-fish oils and only corn oil was similar (p>0.05).  Survival rate of fish at all treatments was similar, ranged from 90.00 to 93.33%.  Thus, the results suggested that diet containing only corn oil is suitable for botia to obtain higher growth rate and lower feed conversion rate.</p> <p>Keywords: fatty acid, growth performance, botia, <em>Botia macracanthus</em></p> <p><br /> ABSTRAK</p> <p>Ikan membutuhkan asam lemak essensial (EFA = Essential Fatty Acid) untuk pertumbuhannya.  Ikan air tawar memerlukan asam lemak linoleat (<em>n</em>-6) atau gabungan asam lemak linoleat (n-6) dan alfa-linolenat (n-3).  Minyak ikan banyak mengandung asam lemak <em>n</em>-3, minyak jagung kaya akan asam lemak n-6, sementara minyak kelapa banyak mengandung asam lemak jenuh.

Aquaculture has become a primary method to produce various aquatic products, and intensive aquaculture technologies have become commercially important. To improve the efficiency of intensive aquaculture per unit area without reducing the growth rate of cultured fish, the present study explored the potential of artificial substrata in ponds. Our results showed that the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) in the ponds with different stocking densities of grass carp were lower than those in the control group in most cases. Further, the feed conversion rate of grass carp was significantly reduced by introducing these artificial substrata, and the culture density could be significantly increased without reducing the growth rates of these fish. Artificial substrata also significantly enriched specific bacteria and changed the structure of the microbiota in pond water. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria was significantly increased, and bacteria closely related to N and P cycles, such as Hyphomicrobium, Chitinimonas, Legionella, Shewanella, Roseiflexus, and Planktothrix were significantly enhanced. These results showed that the artificial substratum could increase TN and TP removal in aquaculture pond water by enriching N and P cycle-related bacteria, thus significantly increasing the specific growth rate of grass carp and significantly reducing their feed conversion rate. Finally, the stocking density of grass carp and the yield per unit area of pond could be increased without reducing the growth rate.

Hungarian goose production and gene conservation practices have been a tradition in Hungary for several centuries. The old Hungarian geese can only be effectively maintained if the national programs can identify economic uses of the breed. This study aimed to examine the potential use of the Hungarian landrace goose (HL) either as a purebred or crossbred with the Hungarian Upgraded breed (HU). Crossbred offspring were produced by HL ganders and HU layers, as egg production of HL layers is very low. Reproduction traits (egg production, fertility and hatchability) of parent stocks, body weight gain, feed consumption and slaughter values (slaughter loss, breast and thigh weight and proportions) and of offspring were measured. The results showed that fertility in the crossbred geese was insignificant compared to the fertility of HL purebreds, while hatchability of crossbreds was higher than that of purebred HL or HU. HL offspring had significantly lower bodyweight and weight gain, and a higher feed conversion rate than HU. The proportion of valuable meat parts (breast and thigh) was the highest in HU while weight in slaughter loss was also the highest in HU. In terms of body weight, feed conversion rate and slaughter properties, crossbred offspring showed intermediate  inheritance. HL is recommended for crossbreeding with HU breeds and their offspring should be reared under free-range keeping conditions.

Abstract. Effect of increasing zinc concentration in the diets of brown parent stock layers on various production and hatchability traits was investigated. After hatching, chicks were allocated to different treatment groups whose diets were formulated to contain graded concentrations 60 (control), 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 mg zinc (Zn) kg−1 throughout 62 weeks. No effect of increasing zinc concentration on egg production, 5% egg production age, livability and hatchability rate was found (P > 0.05). On the other hand, significant differences were obtained with increase in zinc concentration in egg weight, feed conversion rate and hatchability effciency of the fertile eggs (P < 0.05). The results of the present study suggest that the diets of brown parent stock layers should include 180 mg Zn kg−1 for optimal performance and hatchability traits.

Infectious bronchitis of chickens (IBC) is a highly contagious disease characterized by damage to the respiratory tract. Adult chickens exhibit respiratory symptoms, a 10-50% decrease in egg production, discoloration of the eggshell, deformation of the shell, and a deterioration in the marketability and breeding quality of eggs. The circulation of variant strains in poultry farms of the Russian Federation causes a significant decrease in egg production and the quality of the eggs obtained, causing significant economic damage to industrial poultry farming. The study aimed to presents materials and methods for the industrial and efficient use of live-vaccines against infectious bronchitis of hens from a variant strain. After the use of a live vaccine against infectious bronchitis of chickens from a variant strain, the development, live weight of chickens, and feed conversion during the rearing period were within the standard parameters. in present study, the safety for the growing period with a planned 97.6% was 98.8-98.9%. The uniformity of the herds when transferred to hen - hen was 94-95%. When carrying out immunoprophylaxis of IBS, local immunity is important, which can be ensured using a live spray vaccine - a method starting from the day old. When establishing circulation in the economy of variant strains of IBC virus, it is necessary to introduce vaccination against the variant strain into the scheme of treatment and preventive measures. The research results allow us to conclude that, for the effective prevention of chicken infectious bronchitis, immunization against IBS from variant strains should be introduced into the vaccine prevention scheme.
