Numerous studies on the size effect have been devoted to reinforced concrete (RC) beams. They have shown that increasing the beam size leads to a decrease in ultimate shear strength (stress) at failure. This is reflected in the design model of most current international codes and guidelines, where the size effect is taken into consideration by reducing concrete contribution to the shear resistance (force). In contrast, the size effect of RC beams strengthened with externally bonded (EB) fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) is not fully documented, and very few experimental studies have been devoted to the phenomenon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the current code and guideline models in terms of the size effect on the EB-FRP contribution to shear resistance. To this end, a database of experimental findings on the size effect in EB-FRP-strengthened beams was built based on the reported literature, as well as our own experimental tests. The data were analysed and compared with the predictions of six current codes and design guidelines to assess their accuracy. Experimental results clearly revealed the presence of a size effect related to EB-FRP as well as the existence of interaction between internal stirrups and EB-CFRP. Based on analysis of the collected experimental test results, the study clearly revealed that the predictions of current codes and guidelines overestimate the contribution of EB-FRP systems to shear resistance. The size effect tends to exacerbate this overestimation as the effective depth (d) of the beams increases. Therefore, until the size effect for RC beams strengthened in shear with EB-FRP is captured by the prediction models, current codes and design guidelines are to be used with caution.

The paper presents the experimental tests concerning the treatment by membrane techniques of radioactive aqueous waste. Solutions, which have been treated by using the bench-scale installation, were radioactive simulated secondary wastes from the decontamination process with modified POD. Generally, an increasing of the retention is observed for most of the contaminants in the reverse osmosis experiments with pre-treatment steps. The main reason for taking a chemical treatment approach was to selectively remove soluble contaminants from the waste. In the optimization part of the precipitation step, several precipitation processes were compared. Based on this comparison, mixed [Fe(CN)6]4-/Al3+/Fe2+ was selected as a precipitation process applicable for precipitation of radionuclides and flocculation of suspended solid. Increased efficiencies for cesium radionuclides removal were obtained in natural zeolite adsorption pre-treatment stages and this was due to the fact that volcanic tuff used has a special affinity for this element. Usually, the addition of powdered active charcoal serves as an advanced purifying method used to remove organic compounds and residual radionuclides; thus by analyzing the experimental data (for POD wastes) one can observe a decreasing of about 50% for cobalt isotopes subsequently to the active charcoal adsorption.. The semipermeable membranes were used, which were prepared by the researchers from the Research Center for Macromolecular Materials and Membranes, Bucharest. The process efficiency was monitored by gamma spectrometry.

In the case of protection of transportation systems, the optimization of the shield is of practical interest to reduce the weight of such components and thus increase the payload or reduce the fuel consumption. As far as metal shields are concerned, some investigations based on numerical simulations showed that a multi-layered configuration made of layers of different metals could be a promising solution to reduce the weight of the shield. However, only a few experimental studies on this subject are available. The aim of this study is therefore to discuss whether or not a monolithic shield can be substituted by a double-layered configuration manufactured from two different metals and if such a configuration can guarantee the same perforation resistance at a lower weight. In order to answer this question, the performance of a ballistic shield constituted of a layer of high-strength steel and a layer of an aluminum alloy impacted by an armor piercing projectile was investigated in experimental tests. Furthermore, an axisymmetric finite element model was developed. The effect of the strain rate hardening parameter C and the thermal softening parameter m of the Johnson–Cook constitutive model was investigated. The numerical model was used to understand the perforation process and the energy dissipation mechanism inside the target. It was found that if the high-strength steel plate is used as a front layer, the specific ballistic energy increases by 54% with respect to the monolithic high-strength steel plate. On the other hand, the specific ballistic energy decreases if the aluminum plate is used as the front layer.

The thermal inertia properties of construction elements have gained a great deal of importance in building design over the last few years. Many investigations have shown that this is the key factor to improve energy efficiency and obtain optimal comfort conditions in buildings. However, experimental tests are expensive and time consuming and the development of new products requires shorter analysis times. In this sense, the goal of this research is to analyze the thermal behavior of a wall made up of lightweight concrete blocks covered with layers of insulating materials in steady- and transient-state conditions. For this, numerical and experimental studies were done, taking outdoor temperature and relative humidity as a function of time into account. Furthermore, multi-criteria optimization based on the design of the experimental methodology is used to minimize errors in thermal material properties and to understand the main parameters that influence the numerical simulation of thermal inertia. Numerical Finite Element Models (FEM) will take conduction, convection and radiation phenomena in the recesses of lightweight concrete blocks into account, as well as the film conditions established in the UNE-EN ISO 6946 standard. Finally, the numerical ISO-13786 standard and the experimental results are compared in terms of wall thermal transmittance, thermal flux, and temperature evolution, as well as the dynamic thermal inertia parameters, showing a good agreement in some cases, allowing builders, architects, and engineers to develop new construction elements in a short time with the new proposed methodology.

Experimental studies support the conventional belief that people behave more aggressively whilst under the influence of alcohol. To examine how these experimental findings manifest in real life situations, this study uses a method for estimating evidence for causality with observational data—‘situational decomposition’ to examine the association between alcohol consumption and crime in young adults from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Self-report questionnaires were completed at age 24 years to assess typical alcohol consumption and frequency, participation in fighting, shoplifting and vandalism in the previous year, and whether these crimes were committed under the influence of alcohol. Situational decomposition compares the strength of two associations, (1) the total association between alcohol consumption and crime (sober or intoxicated) versus (2) the association between alcohol consumption and crime committed while sober. There was an association between typical alcohol consumption and total crime for fighting [OR (95% CI): 1.47 (1.29, 1.67)], shoplifting [OR (95% CI): 1.25 (1.12, 1.40)], and vandalism [OR (95% CI): 1.33 (1.12, 1.57)]. The associations for both fighting and shoplifting had a small causal component (with the association for sober crime slightly smaller than the association for total crime). However, the association for vandalism had a larger causal component.

AbstractAn understanding of left ventricle (LV) mechanics is fundamental for designing better preventive, diagnostic, and treatment strategies for improved heart function. Because of the costs of clinical and experimental studies to treat and understand heart function, respectively, in-silico models play an important role. Finite element (FE) models, which have been used to create in-silico LV models for different cardiac health and disease conditions, as well as cardiac device design, are time-consuming and require powerful computational resources, which limits their use when real-time results are needed. As an alternative, we sought to use deep learning (DL) for LV in-silico modeling. We used 80 four-chamber heart FE models for feed forward, as well as recurrent neural network (RNN) with long short-term memory (LSTM) models for LV pressure and volume. We used 120 LV-only FE models for training LV stress predictions. The active material properties of the myocardium and time were features for the LV pressure and volume training, and passive material properties and element centroid coordinates were features of the LV stress prediction models. For six test FE models, the DL error for LV volume was 1.599 ± 1.227 ml, and the error for pressure was 1.257 ± 0.488 mmHg; for 20 LV FE test examples, the mean absolute errors were, respectively, 0.179 ± 0.050 for myofiber, 0.049 ± 0.017 for cross-fiber, and 0.039 ± 0.011 kPa for shear stress. After training, the DL runtime was in the order of seconds whereas equivalent FE runtime was in the order of several hours (pressure and volume) or 20 min (stress). We conclude that using DL, LV in-silico simulations can be provided for applications requiring real-time results.

Gear and bearing faults are the main causes of gearbox failure. Till now, incipient fault diagnosis of these two components has been a problem and needs further research. In this context, it is found that Lucy–Richardson deconvolution (LRD) proved to be an excellent tool to enhance fault diagnosis in rolling element bearings and gears. LRD’s good identification capabilities of fault frequencies are presented which outperform envelope analysis. This is very critical for early fault diagnosis. The case studies were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results of simulated and experimental studies show that LRD is efficient in alleviating the negative effect of noise and transmission path. The results of simulation and experimental tests demonstrated outperformance of LRD compared to classical envelope analysis for fault diagnosis in rolling element bearings and gears, especially when it is applied to the processing of signals with strong background noise.

Abstract The blade tip clearance loss was studied experimentally and numerically for a micro radial fan with a tip diameter of 19.2mm. Its relative blade tip clearance, i.e., the clearance divided by the blade height of 1.82 mm, was adjusted with different shims. The fan characteristics were experimentally determined for an operation at the nominal rotational speed of 168 krpm with hot air (200 °C). The total-to-total pressure rise and efficiency increased from 49 mbar to 68 mbar and from 53% to 64%, respectively, by reducing the relative tip clearance from 7.7% to the design value of 2.2%. Single and full passage computational fluid dynamics simulations correlate well with these experimental findings. The widely-used Pfleiderer loss correlation with an empirical coefficient of 2.8 fits the numerical simulation and the experiments within +2 efficiency points. The high sensitivity to the tip clearance loss is a result of the design specific speed of 0.80, the highly-backward curved blades (17°), and possibly the low Reynolds number (1 × 105). The authors suggest three main measures to mitigate the blade tip clearance losses for small-scale fans: (1) utilization of high-precision surfaced-grooved gas-bearings to lower the blade tip clearance, (2) a mid-loaded blade design, and (3) an unloaded fan leading edge to reduce the blade tip clearance vortex in the fan passage.
